For me, launching the camera is nearly instant. I've been able to take at least ten photos in about 25 seconds with little blur. I'll admit that's in daylight or other well lit instances.
Even in low light, I can snap at least a couple of photos quickly and gain some usable photos. I can thank the image stabilizer, and f1.8 aperture for that.

The Moto Gestures for the camera is a godsend. (Twist twice to open the camera app.) I can take candids with this phone with ease and the read-write capability of the phone is extremely quick.

the app is fast to launch, but there is often shutter lag. I was walking around taking pictures and noticed I had a few shots of the ground as I lowered the phone too soon!

The camera app launches fast enough. But I'm seeing lag when I take photos.
It's definitely not as fast taking photos compared to the GS7 (my previous phone), which is disappointing.
It's still very annoying that the camera quick launch only goes to "Superior" auto mode.
Taking pictures using the dedicated shutter button even slower. I use the on screen button instead.

it actually bothers me.. from clicking the capture to having the photo saved it takes a good 1 second.
This in turn translates in blurry , shaken, lost moments.
Try this: click the capture then drag your phone. The photo will be from while you drag your phone. I tried a lot of apps, all are consistent to this problem.
The app opens almost instantly. the main shooter is very fast and saves pics fast. the Tele lens is making you wait like 3 seconds! and the portrait is taking forever to take one photo you have to wait like 4 - 5 seconds to take another one.
The video is also **** cause of the dropped frames and its not even 60FPS!
Hope an update will fix all above

Camera takes a long time to focus resulting in missed or blurry shots.

Makes sense. It is not equipped with Phase detection autofocus.

That's a bummer considering that cheaper phones have it these days.

The ability to quick launch the camera from a double tap of the side/power button means you can launch the camera pretty fast and it responds snappily.
You can even use the camera while the phone is closed, using the tiny front screen as a viewfinder. That's novel and fun for selfies but it will only take square 1:1 pictures this way and the little screen is pretty useless, especially as it's a different resolution so makes framing anything other than a portrait impossible.

The speed is not impressive but it's better than my V30. I save the images to my SD card, so that might be slowing it down (although I am using a high-speed card). With my wife's iPhone 8 I can take rapid photos almost as quickly as I can tap the screen. This phone is more like one photo every .75 seconds.
Double click the power button and launch the camera. Ready to snap shots nearly instantly... good enough for me.
