I don't know the answer to your question but I can confirm that the Galaxy S5 that I received from TMobile was in fact LOCKED.
I called the support # and was told that I had to have service and use it for 40 days before it could be unlocked.
I PAID THE FULL PRICE ($720 with tax)!!!
I asked to speak with a supervisor -- after 10 minutes on hold -- no change.
I told the store that I was going to bring it back because I didn't pay $700 for a locked phone. Everyone has been nice but it's locked for policy issues and not for technical reasons. I flew to Canada when I bought my iPhone4.
And, AT&T is worse -- one guy told me 3 months and tech support said it had to be active for 6 months.

It is GSM/LTE unlocked (as are all Verizon LTE devices), but I'm pretty sure it doesn't have T-Mobile's LTE bands (or at the very least it doesn't have all of their bands).
From what I have been reading, on a Verizon phone, calls and data using GSM and WCDMA bands would work. But LTE bands are Verizon specific hence would not work.
Tl; Dr Voice /data using GSM/WCDMA. No LTE.

Does this mean, once unlocked, T-Mobile and AT&T versions would work on each other's networks including LTE?
I also noticed that with S5, there aren't GSM carrier specific versions. Meaning they are going IPhone route with making all GSM phones enabled that for that country's LTE bands. Is that right reading?

Which means you can't use lte and gsm at the same time (no lte data and voice calls). I usually keep it on gsm, and when I need speedy data I switch it to lte.

How? If you put a TMobile SIM in the phone, or any other foreign SIM, it boots but receives no service. This is in line with almost all other Verizon branded phones (excluding Apple) -- where the phone works (unlocked) outside the US, but won't roam to ATT/TMo in the US.
Pictures please. For the record, my S5 doesn't register on a network with a TMobile or Australian SIM. The Australian SIM in a Nexus 5 roams to TMobile.

This was probably true about a year ago but the recent releases from Verizon, e.g. iPhone 5/5s and galaxy s4 has been fully unlocked world phones. I'm sure there are a few other phones... I think lg g2? I'm not exactly sure. But I have personally stuck my sim(T-Mobile) into my friend's Verizon phones (s4 and iPhone 5s) and they work right away after a reboot. Only problem might be an edit in APN for data and mms. Just sharing my experience, you should check out your phones again.

Not trying to be a jerk, but unless you tried this process in the actual phone in question, then you don't really know if it works. The phone DOES NOT just magically work on TMobile if you put a SIM in, you receive NO service. Now, I didn't go mess around with APNs -- typically those are only for MMS/Data. This is also true for several other phones:
Razr HD / Maxx HD
Galaxy S3
In the past, when the phones were SIM locked, a foreign SIM would prompt for an unlock code before the phone even booted into "normal" Android. That's not the case here -- because the phone is not SIM locked -- but I do believe it is network locked to VZW only when in the US.
For the record, I did try this in my S5. I will be going to Australia next week and will try a Telstra (or perhaps Optus) SIM over there to see what happens.

I believe the 4s was still carrier locked.
I was a wireless agent not to long ago, so I know how these things work, not that it magically just works... I'm just sharing you how some recent releases from Verizon has been world unlocked and a few others have mentioned that they just plugged it in and it worked. So good luck and have fun in Australia.

It is odd that the apple phones -- and some of the Android phones -- are totally unlocked so that you can use them on ATT/TMobile in the US -- but some (like the S5, apparently) are not. I still am interested to know how some of the other users in this thread got their S5s working on TMobile...
Why would anyone want to buy a Verizon GS5 and use it on T-Mobile? The bootloader is locked and there is currently no unlock method available.

I can confirm the Verizon GS5 is compatible with T-Mobiles LTE network I'm using one now with LTE all you have to do is go to settings mobile network and switch to Global mode some times you'll have to toggle LTE then back to global to get LTE to kick in.
I am able to successfully use my VZ Galaxy Note 3 and my wife uses her VZ Galaxy S5, both devices on T-mobile Edge, HSPA, HSPA+ (21mbps), and LTE (band 4) frequencies. These devices unfortunately will not do DC-HSPA+ (42mbps), but that's not a big deal for us because LTE coverage is good where we live. We have no issues with making voice calls, or sending SMS/MMS, and don't have to switch APN's or toggle between Global Mode or GSM/UMTS mode. We leave them on Global Mode with the correct APN settings.

This is all new info to me. I have an AT&T galaxy S5 that I want to use on Verizon. Is it possible or do I need to trade for a Verizon-specific model?
I was curious if anyone had tried dual CDMA carriers on their dual sim G4s. My understanding is that for 3G cdma voice the device itself is registered as opposed to a 3G GSM which registers the sim, so only one CDMA service could be active at a time. Changing to another CDMA carrier would mean going through Verizon's or Sprints's activation process each time you wanted to change to a different sim (this was my experience with a 3 sim adapter). I'd love to hear someone more knowledgeable chime in on this subject and provide some feedback on whether or not this is how it would work with a dual sim moto G4.
I'd love to have dual CDMA sims because I have free service with ringplus (Sprint MVNO) but it's spotty in rural areas, whereas Verizon has the most solid signal in the remotest regions.....however I think it's a pipedream. I am aware that you can do a CDMA LTE sim switch and get data without a problem (I'v done this with a triple sim adapter), it's voice and text that I'm interested in being able to switch to, without having to go through the activation process. And because I need this voice and data in remote areas without LTE, VOLTE isn't an option.
I hope that isn't too convoluted or arcane a question, I realize it's not a common scenario. But with the Moto 4G being carrier friendly to all the north american providers (GSM and CDMA) and having a dual sim slot, it's the first plausible solution to what I'd like to achieve.
Unfortunately, the only G4 models that have CDMA are the US models (XT1644 G4+, XT1625 G4, XT1607 G4 Play, XT1609 G4 Play for Verizon Prepaid), and the US models are only available in single-SIM format.
From what I've been gathering, there are no dual-SIM CDMA phones that fully work with US carriers available yet. The OnePlus 3 comes sorta close, it's dual-SIM and has CDMA Band 0, which Verizon uses in most markets, but at the moment it either works in 1x/EVDO mode for calls/text, or LTE mode for data. However, it's lacking CDMA Band 1 (Verizon & Sprint) and CDMA Band 10 (Sprint), so it's not ideal. It's also lacking Verizon's main LTE Band 13, and all of Sprint's LTE bands.
Slightly good news, though. The upcoming ZTE Axon 7 is dual-SIM and FCC testing indicates that it fully supports all US carriers, including all Verizon and Sprint CDMA bands.

Would the concept work the way I described in the first post though? I'm really curious if the phone would require sprint or verizon activation when switching cdma sims. I don't have a great deal of experience, simply my results with a multisim adapter. I was unable to test the adapter with a verizon and sprint capable phone (like a nexus 6) but tested it with an Verizon samsung s5 using gsm sims and a verizon LTE sim. The gsm sims (various at&t and t-mobile MVNO) were of course no problem, but switching to (or back to) a verizon LTE sim required teh verizon activation process (but not for data, as the LTE was active without activation).
Is it possible to have a dual sim (or even single sim) phone that supports both carriers (Verizon and Sprint) that could switch back and forth, or is the activation process simply inherreient with the way the devices imei's are registered on CDMA networks, and will always be required. For me going through the activation process for Verizon or Sprint when switching sims would simply preclude any practical usefulness with a dual sim cdma capable phone (although it would still have value as a dual sim with a cdma and a gsm sim).

I can't speak for Sprint, as I have Verizon, but I do know that they're more restrictive than Verizon.
On Verizon, the only current restriction is a whitelist when you try to activate a SIM for the first time. You have to use a device that's in Verizon's "activation database", typically Verizon-branded devices, iPhones 6 and up, the Moto X Pure, and (at some point, if not now) the Moto G4 lineup. Once you have an activated SIM, you can stick it into any compatible device (be it from Verizon, another provider's phone, or even an unlocked phone that doesn't officially work on Verizon) and you should be good to go.
For example, I've been using my same Verizon SIM that I got with the HTC Thunderbolt (when it launched in March 2011) in numerous other phones (Verizon phones, US Cellular phones, unlocked phones, even some GSM/LTE-only phones) with no need to contact Verizon or use the website or anything. I've been able to just pop in the SIM, adjust the connection method on the phone if needed, and go.
As for your experience with using a dual-SIM adapter on the Verizon GS5, it might be due to the phone going into "GSM/LTE" mode when you insert a ATT/TMO SIM, but not switching to "CDMA/LTE" mode when you switch to your Verizon SIM (thereby only connecting in LTE mode). Might want to try setting it to Global mode (GSM/CDMA/LTE). The Verizon version probably wasn't tested for dual-SIM use, so it might just be the OS not knowing to switch to the other mode, or it might be an issue with the adapter itself.
Regarding an actual dual-SIM device with both SIMs being CDMA, I'm unsure if it causes any issues, as there's been no phone with that ability released yet (technically, someone can try dual Verizon SIMs in the OP3, but the CDMA implementation on that phone looks to be pretty half-assed, so I wouldn't use it as a baseline). Guess it depends on how the SIM slots are setup (if they share the same IMEI, or if they have different IMEIs for the two slots). If they're the same IMEI, I can see there potentially being issues, but if they're different (which should be the case for any modern name-brand flagship), there shouldn't be.
We'll know more once the Axon 7 releases. Unfortunately, ZTE has said that CDMA support will be coming in a software update later, but at least the phone is physically banded for CDMA, so we won't know for sure until then.

I am thinking to buy one, but I was previously burnt on Nextbit Robin being not able to get data service in Canada. Robin could see voice and SMS, and latched on local Canadian carriers fine (Bell, and another one I forgot its name), just no data. Rumor says the manufacturer did not certify this device with any carriers outside of USA.
I want to make sure that this Pro3 can get data in Canada. I am on T-Mobile.
FYI, regular OEM devices such as V20, S3, S4, S7, Moto G4 Play all worked fine in Canada.

T-mobile is a US carrier not Canadaian, but nonetheless Le pro 3 will work as it has AWS.
I know for a fact cause I'm on Freedommobile that also uses AWS for 3g data and it works fine, LTE is another matter.
I think all Pro 3 HK variants only have 1700/2100 LTE, not 3G. Should work with all carriers in Canada AFAIK, though I'm not sure about Freedom.

I don't use Verizon, but here's my guess:
For calls and SMS to work on a carrier on LTE only, you'll need VoLTE support. And at least for the major U.S. carriers, they each decide through some sort of certification which phones are allowed to get VoLTE. This will be more important in a few years when all the carriers go LTE-only after dropping all 2G/3G/CDMA networks. Currently on Verizon, if a phone can't get VoLTE, it would rely on CDMA for calls and text messages. Since the H918 isn't whitelisted for VoLTE and doesn't have CDMA bands, it won't work properly on Verizon's network. It can only get VoLTE on the T-Mobile network in the U.S.
tried to run the imei number on the sprint and verizon site, says cannot be activated. Went to sprint and called verizon, says att branded phone cannot be activated. This is unlocked, works on tmo. tried searching for a solution in the forum but no dice.

Doesn't matter if it's "unlocked", other carriers have their rules for what they allow on their networks. Most AT&T phones don't have CDMA, and Sprint, Verizon (for now) still uses CDMA.
On non-branded phones you won't get VoLTE from most carriers (T-Mobile is the exception) and without VoLTE you would need to temporarily drop down to CDMA for voice calls on Sprint and Verizon.
Even on phones that have CDMA, like the LG V30 US998, Verizon still wants you to buy their branded phones -- because end of this year when CDMA goes away, those phone still won't have VoLTE. So in a few months those phones won't be able to make phone calls. I have two relatives with LG V30/V30+ US998 on Verizon. Don't ask how, there are ways. But even of 2020 they will need new phones when Verizon kills CDMA and they can't get VoLTE on non-Verizon phones.

As an owner of an AT&T v35 I can tell you it will work nicely on the Verizon network including VoLTE and VoWIFI. You do have to jump through a few hurdles. You will need a SIM activated on the Verizon network. That may mean buying a new phone from Verizon. You also need to SIM unlock the v35 by buying a code from a site like codes2unlock.com. You may also need to cross flash to the NA rom. These things should be done in that order, and there is no going back to an AT&T rom afterwards.

Chazz, can you clarify this? I have a US998 v30s running on Verizon with VoLTE. It was my understanding that it will not be affected by shutdown of cdma by Verizon. I like the phone and want to continue using it.

My brother-in-law found Verizon store rep willing to break the rules for he and my sister's USS98 V30+ (converted from Sprint LS998). They switched from AT&T to Verizon.
This guy said "Verizon wants you to buy their phones, of course. They'll tell you this phone (US998) won't work, but it will." He activated two SIM cards and put them in their US998.
He said "If you have any issues, ONLY see me here at this store. Don't talk to any other reps about this." Wink, wink, nudge, nudge. (Monty Python reference.)
My brother-in-law and sister don't have V35 on Verizon, but you probably have VoLTE because you enabled VoLTE on another phone (Droid Turbo)? I don't know if they have Verizon VoLTE on US998 V30+, but I assumed they didn't...

If you have Verizon VoLTE now, then nothing will change.
I assumed my brother-in-law and sister don't have VoLTE and are temporarily dropping to CDMA for phone calls. But I have no way of easily checking. Neither would know what "VoLTE" is nor "CDMA".
I merely told them their US998 phones were carrier unlocked and would work on Verizon -- if they got already-activated SIM cards. My brother-in-law used his considerable sales skills and found a helpful rep.
thanks a ton @chazz for the clarification. i have already move to AMZ 9.0 which looked to be pure android. was not able to get NAO due to error(sha256 auth error). AMZ was the only one that worked from multiple different firmwares(lgfirmware /sammobile) from us region and it works awesome.

You should consider features you want to have on your account when buying the phone from Verizon. Some can be toggled through the the settings menu on the v35 like Advanced Calling for VoLTE, but others can't like visual voice mail. Ask to have them activated when you buy the phone. Keep that Verizon phone, you may have to get help in the future from Verizon and it will come in handy! They won't be impressed with the v35.
I don't have proof of it and am not in a position to test, but I suspect you cannot activate a Sprint sim on a Sprint phone and then move to the v35. My understanding from reading about the open market ULM and AT&T branded v35 is that Sprint maintains an IMEI whitelist. Sprint only allows Sprint branded phones on their network. This is why the ULM model is preferred for Google FI.
