[ROOT] H872 (up to and including 20g) - T-Mobile LG G6 Guides, News, & Discussion

WARNING
DO NOT LET YOUR PHONE REBOOT, OR POWER OFF UNTIL I TELL YOU THAT IS WHAT YOU NEED TO DO.
If you do, I am not sure what shape your phone will be in.
This should go without saying, but you MUST have your bootloader unlocked (check OEM UNLOCK in developer options AND fastboot oem unlock). If you don't, you will probably brick your phone.
If you use this on any model G6 besides the H872, you will be stuck in a bootloop, and you will not be able to fix it since you will have wiped out download mode!
This is safe if no mistakes are made (typos, missing a step, etc). However, if you do mess up, the risk is high that you lose download mode at best, or brick your phone at worst.
If you deviate from this procedure, and think: "I can just skip a step, or I can do this on my own Linux install". Don't complain if you brick your phone.
PREREQUISITES:
You must have a version of laf that has the COPY opcode.
Since none of the firmware available for the H872 has the COPY opcode, we have to use the H918 laf partition.
Grab the H918 10p KDZ: link to 10p KDZ
You need to be on 11g or above. Be aware, once you are on 11g+ you cannot downgrade to any versions prior to 11g due to anti-rollback.
You will need a copy of the KDZ that your phone is on. If you are not currently on 11g, upgrade before continuing.
For 11g : Link to 11g KDZ
For 11h : Link to 11h KDZ
For 20a : Link to 20a KDZ
We are going to flash this using the patched LG UP. There may be one that was patched specifically for the G6 -- don't use it,
it has NOT been tested. Grab the one for the V20: link
It MUST be installed in: Crogram Files (x86)LG ElectronicsLGUP
You can't just unzip it anywhere and run it, it will not find the model file.
You need the H872 Unofficial 3.2.3 TWRP by @Eliminator74. 3.2.3 is included in the repo so that you know that you have the exact version.
If you decide to use any other version, you will brick your phone because the commands below are for this exact version!
You need to grab FWUL (version 2.7 or later) and burn it to a USB stick: link
Even if you have Linux, and you think you can install the dependencies, don't. I know this works from FWUL.
If you are rooting on 20a, you will need a Micro-SD card. Copy the TWRP 3.2.3 image and the latest Magisk zip to the SD card.
WARNING: Only applies if rooting while on 20a
Minor Encryption-related issues have occurred while testing 20a. If your data partition is encrypted, TWRP will NOT be able to decrypt it. Because of this, you will have to perform a wipe and format of your Data partition. Be sure to backup all data on your device prior to continuing by copying important files to an external SD card or using LG Mobile Switch to back it up.
PROCEDURE PART 1: Getting a working LAF onto your phone
By far this is the most dangerous part of this procedure.
Boot to download mode
In LG UP, choose partition DL.
Pick the H918 10p KDZ
Click start / ok
When you will be given a list of partitions to flash, only check laf
Click start / ok
You will get a warning about additional modified partitions -- ignore it, and click OK.
As a safety feature, LG UP will start flashing those modified partitions after laf completes flashing.
After the flash is initiated, pay close attention to the "step" and as soon as it changes from laf to another partition, PULL THE USB CABLE!
If you let it completely flash the H918 KDZ, your phone WILL reboot, and you WILL have a brick that can't be fixed.
You need to pay attention, but you also don't need to be sitting on pins and needles. You have quite a bit of time to pull the cable since system is one of the partitions that is flashed
Click OK and it will start flashing.
Once laf is flashed, and you have pulled the USB cable, you can click exit, and then re-open LG UP.
Choose partition DL again, and this time pick the H872 KDZ for the version your phone was on prior to flashing 10p (11g, 11h, or 20a)
Select all partitions except laf. If you forget to uncheck laf, you will have to do this all over again.
When it completes, it will reboot your phone.
Go back into download mode. This time you will be running the H918 laf, and we can continue with PART 2
PROCEDURE PART 2: Installing TWRP
Boot from your FWUL USB stick.
Put your phone into download mode. With the phone powered off, hold vol up and plug in the USB cable. You do not need to touch the power button -- the phone will power on and enter download mode.
This will NOT look like normal download mode on the phone. All you will get is small box that says: "Download mode" -- this is normal. You will also not have ANY indication on the PHONE that it is being flashed.
Once booted, login. The password is: linux
Double click the LG folder that is on the desktop
Double click on LG LAF (runningnak3d) icon and you will be at a terminal prompt.
The following are the commands that you enter into that terminal. You can copy / paste them if you like.
Code:
git pull
git checkout h872-miscwrte
./step1.sh
When you are told to, pull the USB cable, and the phone will power off. You now have TWRP on your laf partition. At this point you can flash a ROM, or Magisk or whatever you like, but I would suggest
at least flashing TWRP to the recovery partition. There is no button combination to get into laf (download mode), so if you only have TWRP on laf, then you will need a USB cable to get into recovery.
OPTIONAL:
If you don't know what to do with TWRP, and you just want to run rooted stock 11g, 11h or 20a, this is for you....
First boot into TWRP - with the phone off, hold vol up and plug in the USB cable.
PROCEDURE PART 3: Rooting and cleanup
Now that you are in TWRP:
Nougat (11g, 11h Users)
./step2.sh
If you ran step2.sh you have TWRP on laf, and recovery, and you are rooted. If you only ran step1.sh, then you have TWRP on laf. Either way, enjoy!
Oreo (20a) Users
Once in TWRP, click the “Wipe” button.
Choose Advanced Wipe and select the Dalvik, Data and Cache options and Wipe. Do not reboot the phone.
Go back to the main menu or main wipe screen
Select “Format Data” and complete the format.
Go back to the main menu and choose Install, and then Install Image.
Flash the TWRP 3.2.3 image from external_sd to the RECOVERY partition. DO NOT Reboot to System.
Go back to the main screen and attempt to reboot to Recovery.
If you are able to reboot to recovery without any issues, you should now Install the Magisk zip from external_sd.
After flashing Magisk, you may now reboot to system and Oreo should boot to the initial Android Setup screen.
After booting to Oreo, make sure you enable installations from Unknown Sources in your Android Settings and install the latest Magisk Manager.
If Oreo boots to an "Encryption Unsuccessful" screen, you will need to format the Data partition again. Tap the reset button and it should boot to Recovery. Perform another wipe of cache/data/dalvik and go back to the Wipe screen and Format Data. Reboot system and you should boot to Oreo Normally.
To Restore Download Mode
20a - Flash @Eliminator74's Bootstock with LAF image using TWRP
11g - Flash @weakNPCdotCom's StockLAF image using TWRP

You ARE the man!
Good job, I'm certainly tempted to try, but have never done such kind of procedure to get root and I started flashing and rooting some time ago but everything was easier back then, I'll probably wait a bit, what's a week or two when I got the phone May last year.
Enjoy your time off. You really deserve it.

it my fall, when i start to do laf partion i didn't see when come out laf partition, so i let the program do his job after i see that it come to system write and i understand that it was there that i will pull the cable out, btw i will wait some good person will found solution for the qualcomm 9008 problem..they made a lot of good job..and of course is my mistake...if someone know how to come out from this problem i will be grated for all life..for the moment i will wait..or i found someone can unlock for a good price i will pay him and do the job...

The only fix for 9008 mode on UFS devices (which the G6 is) is a firehose programmer and QFIL. It is no longer possible to boot from an SD card. AFAIK, there is no signed (yes it MUST be signed) firehose for the H872.
Your only options are T-Mobile or LG warranty, or pay to have it repaired if it isn't under warranty. You could also swap the board with an H872 that has a cracked screen, but getting the thing apart looks like a real PITA.

Guys i found this on the web... maybe for the profesional user this can be a way to unbrick lg g6 with hard brick like mine https://www.androidbrick.com/download/download-latest-2018-qualcomm-flasher-qfil-qpst-2-7-472/
i try to use it and i didn't understand nothing..but my mobile it see as download mode

Thanks for putting this together, runningnak3d!
So, reading through the tutorial, you say this towards the end, after doing the cleanup steps:
Now you have TWRP on laf, and recovery, and you are rooted.

So... does that mean attempting to boot into LAF will always put you into TWRP? If yes... is there any way to get the original LAF partition back, while keeping TWRP in recovery?

Yes, you can extract it from the 11g KDZ and flash it, but why? There will never be a situation where you would want laf over TWRP.

My main reason is to maintain multiple methods of recovery. With a working LAF, you can flash a KDZ to get back to a working phone (even though it would need to be re-rooted). With TWRP in the LAF partition, if for some reason both instances of TWRP failed, that is no longer possible.

If something stopped TWRP from booting on laf, then laf wouldn't boot on laf either. They are both just kernel / initrd boot images.
Do what you want, but trust me, you are a lot safer with two copies of TWRP.

Generally, I'd agree. Having redundant TWRP recoveries is probably better.
But it is nice that we can restore LAF on the off chance we want to restore the phone to default via KDZ. Perhaps to sell it or such.
---
Anyway, thanks for all the great work! I'll probably give it a whirl in a few days. Hopefully, this will spur some ROM development for the H872.

I made it all the way through to mounting system with read/write, twrp console just complains that it failed to mount /system with "device or resource busy". I haven't attempted to boot into recovery again since booting into system but twrp is definitely on laf still. I did try booting from laf twrp to recovery twrp before booting to system and it didn't have permissions either.
Installing Magisk doesn't give me root as it spits an error can't write to /system.
I truly never thought I'd ever see TWRP on this device, this is incredible.

U can mount /system. If u still have twrp on the laf partition all u have to do is reboot twice back into twrp then go to mounts and check system, clear cache then flash the magisk zip. But one thing o truly hate about magisk is my frequencies don't stick on kernel apps so I flashed regular su and right now everything is running amazing.
---------- Post added at 02:04 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:42 PM ----------
Also if anyone has got a bootloop after flashing something I found out that the phone reboots when you are restoring backup. To fix this flash recovery system and boot from the backup but u have to keep tapping on the screen so it dont timeout and restore wrong.

Think I will wait till next week I'm just happy you got this far

Root lg k8 k350xx and k10 k430xx (MTK)

This thread is out of date since there is my new thread with an easier method: https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-k10/how-to/friendly-root-method-lg-k8-k10-t3531223
However i keep this one for troubleshooting and deeper understanding...
This description was originally made for the k8, however it seems to work on k10 k430 devices
LG K8:
OS Android v6.0 (Marshmallow)
Chipset Mediatek MT6735
CPU Quad-core 1.3 GHz Cortex-A53
GPU Mali-T720
1.5GB of RAM
8GB ROM
LG K10 K430...:
quite similar to k8
Rooting the k8 (and the k10) is rather difficult since it's using "lz4" compression for the partition images not the usual "gzip" method.
Systemless supersu is still unable to patch lz4 boot images so we need to have a little trick. Not to mention porting a working TWRP is also a pian in the ass...
Before posting any questions/errors please read the troubleshooting guide and also read back in the thread!
Steps:
0.
Remove the back panel of the phone because you'll have to be able to reach your sd card, watch out for your battery - must not fall out!
If your TWRP supports mtp connection under "mount" you can skip this part and you don't have to put your sd card in and out - maybe you have to fix the driver in windows!
1.
Unlock your bootloader (all your data will be lost!!!) via ADB then boot up normally
http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-k10/how-to/unlock-bootloader-lg-k10-mtk-devices-t3486302
if there is no warnning message during boot up after unlocking your bootloader read this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-k10/how-to/rid-shutting-device-corrupt-message-t3517879
2.
Boot to TWRP (you have to stay in TWRP during the whole process!!!) via ADB and fastboot
3.
Mount sd card
Backup your boot image (find boot.emmc.win in TWRP folder on your sdcard - rename it on PC to bootlz4_0.img)
or use your boot image taken from your kdz as it is written in the end of this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-k10/how-to/rid-shutting-device-corrupt-message-t3517879
4. Tweak bootlz4_0.img with Carliv Image Kitchen (Carliv download: http://viid.me/qe7BDp)
-Unpack it, open "boot.img-ramdisk-compress" file with a text editor (notepad++) and change the first (and only) line from "lz4" to "gz"
-Repack image - rename the repacked image to bootgz_0
5. Flash bootgz_0.img in TWRP
6. Install SuperSU (and xposed if you wish or you can istall xposed later) - do not quit TWRP from now until last step - that would brick your device
7. Backup boot image again - you need to remove sd card (unmount first) and put it in PC - it means you have to remove the usb cable from the phone and remove back panel - maybe before getting into TWRP!
- or enable mtp in TWRP and copy/paste the boot image from sd card.
8. Tweak boot image in Carliv
-Unpack it, open "boot.img-ramdisk-compress" file and change the first line from "gz" to "lz4"
-Repack image
9. Flash boot image in TWRP
10. Restart (this will take a bit longer and also expect bootloop a few times)
you can find a rather detailed description here:
http://viid.me/qe7Zoh - don't forget that you can use mtp connection instead of taking in and out the sd card if your TWRP supports it.
If you prefer using adb/fastboot commands instead removing your sdcard all the time you can use salaigeethan666's guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=69415205&postcount=34
but some reported problems with flashing the boot image and getting back to TWRP this way.
If you have problems booting up after installing supersu maybe you can force boot described by cpatrick3000:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-k10/how-to/root-lg-k10-mtk-chipset-95-method-t3498166
or the problem might be:

If you ever lose root and try again consider Darkos333's guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=69713043&postcount=99

or TWRP 3.0.2 by Singular777: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=69381986&postcount=126
In case of k10 430dsy try 123xdagsm's recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=69706581&postcount=154
Please, before you proceed read and practice the methods of each steps! A few hours of preparation (google + xda + tests) might save your device getting hard bricket and it's also better for you to know what you're doing! Look for fastboot commands, systemless supersu, TWRP usage, Carliv image kitchen, ... (google + xda)! You better not leave TWRP during the whole process! Keep in mind that after the supersu is installed you must be able to recompress your boot image to "lz4" otherwise you get soft bricked and you need to use lg up to refirbish...!!!
Read each steps twice and follow them stricktly!
Also keep in mind that if you want to uninstall supersu/remove root you have to reflash stock firmware with lg bridge + hard reset or lg up.
Troubleshooting
"your device is corrupt. It can't be trusted and may not work properly"
- this message is normal when you have an opened bootloader
- phone shuts down right after this message: http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-k10/how-to/rid-shutting-device-corrupt-message-t3517879
no ADB connection (command: "adb devices" - your device is not in the output list):
- turn-on USB Debugging (settings - developer opions)
- install drivers
no fastboot connection (command: "fastboot devices" - your device is not in the output list):
- install drivers
- check device manager
- you may try to install android SDK if the connection is not working
unable to unlock bootloader (command "fastboot oem unlock"):
- allow oem unlock (settings - developer opions)
device is not booting into TWRP:
- unlock bootloader
- the TWRP is not compatible with your device (there is a list of TWRPs for different devices, if you cant find yours you can try the next guide: http://www.chinaphonearena.com/foru...752-MT6753-MT6795-MT6797-TWRP-MT67xx-tutorial)
unable to unpack boot image in carliv
- your TWRP is not compatible with your device (at least it didn't backup your boot image properly)
unable to repack boot image in carliv
- check the unpacked boot image "ramdisk" folder, if there are all the necessary files and folders, find a list attached at posts #107 and #124: (doesn't have to be the exact same since k8 and k10 migth differ - there is no "boot" folder in case of the k8 and also before installing supersu the su folders are not to be there - normally 5+ folders and 20+ files)
- see if "boot.img-ramdisk-compress" file exists
- maybe you messed up something in carliv
supersu failed to patch the ramdisk (even if it sais installed succesfully)
- you can try just unpack and repack your stock boot image install/flash it and see if it boots up - so you can be sure you are a "master" of carliv and TWRP
- your boot image is not gzip compressed - open "boot.img-ramdisk-compress" as text. It should only have one line: "gz"
supersu failed to install
- you can try just unpack and repack your stock boot image install/flash it and see if it boots up - so you can be sure you are a "master" of carliv and TWRP
- your TWRP is not compatible with your device (or you need a newer version)
device is not booting up after the final step (boot loops for more then 2 minutes)
- use Berkantkz guide to flash back the original firmware: http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-k10/how-to/guide-unbricking-flashing-firmware-due-t3380529
- after getting back to stock you can try just unpack and repack your stock boot image install/flash it and see if it boots up - so you can be sure you are a "master" of carliv and TWRP
- duble check your final boot image (uncompress and compare files and folders to the one attached in posts #107 and #124 - has to be reasonably/more or less the same)
- consider step 6 in Darkos333 guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=69713043&postcount=99
- also consider cpatrick3000's force boot guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-k10/how-to/root-lg-k10-mtk-chipset-95-method-t3498166
if none of these helps make a recovery log (in TWRP under advanced menu) before final restart and post it or send it to me
This method works for the LG K10 k430Y as well. Thanks very much brah, so far I have changed a couple of thing in the build.prop like activating the multi window setting and so far it is functioning properly besides the annoying 'device is corrupt' message everything seems to be fine thanks a lot bro :good: :good:

Can i ask whitch TWRP you used? Did you maybe tried it with the one i ported for the k8 or is this the one by berkantkz?
I used the twrp made by berkantkz, do you think it would be safe if I flashed it on my k10.

Actually the recovery partitions size is approx. 16Mb. Berkantkz's TWRP is almost 17Mb so there is little chance you can flash it. There is no problem if you try it would give you an error message if the size is too big and nothing's gonna change. I recompressed berkantkz's TWRP to gzip (https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BwyMOazoSp8TdnhBbWpobEk0V0E) so it is smaller, you can try to flash that but you have to try it before. I mean just boot into it (fastboot boot ...) don't flash it first.
Keep me updated please!
About the multiwindow, did you use "ro.build.type" -> userdebug or "persist.splitwindow.support_all" -> true ?
I flashed back to stock with lg bridge and also did factory format with hard buttons. There is no way to root again and boot up succesfully. Somehow lg bridge and also factory format leaves some partions untouched that still have something from supersu. So i erased all partitions in fastboot...
I shouldn't have cause now my phone can't connect at all. Not even in download mode.
I suggest if anyone tried any method to root unsuccesfully that should not try this method. It will not boot up...:S
Thats all for now. I'll try to exchange my phone and then start again...
I can't make lg up to work with the k8. There is no lgup...dll.msi to install. Any ideas?
Maybe the boot image is not turned back to stock not by factory format nor by lg bridge... this migth cause the mess with Supersu install after turnig back to stock... With lg up we could reflash the full stock system and try rooting again...
If anyone plans to root save your stock boot image first, might come handy later...

439? Are you sure? I guess it must be 430... however i belive the only method is the above described one. If you ever attempted rooting the device i suggest not to do that unless you can flash it back to fully stock.
Theese might help for unsuccesful root attempts... i wish i found this before erasing all my partitions...:S

I'm afraid until SuperSU is not "lz4" compatible there is no easier method. I't not so difficult anyways as long as you can make a fastboot connection. There is always download mode and lg bridge if anything goes wrong...
PS. if you ever attempted to root this device before then most likely it's not gonna work... unless you can make LgUP see your k430 and reflash the whole firmware.

There are many video guides on youtube but not for this particular case. I guess you can search each step separately and put the whole picture together.

The principle of obtaining root.
Install SuperSU via TWPR.
We have the boot ramdisk
compression in lz4,it is not
supported so first comes the
installation boot with
compression gz,then install SuperSU,
and boot back lz4

I can't get into fastboot anymore cos there is no hardware shortcut to enter into that and Without ADB i can't go into fastboot. is there any way to fix this? pls help

Videotron LG G2 Nightmare

I would like to thank this wonderful community for all the help I have gotten over the years, I think this should be my first post.
For technical details of all I have done and learned on recovering the damn phone, skip to below the line, the rest is more of an introduction + some history.
In the past I have had a Canadian (BELL) Samsung Galaxy S2.5 as I like to call it. Specs similar to the S3 but not quite.
That was fairly easy to root thanks to odin.
Anyways, I have an LG G2 that I inherited from my brother, so I have some emotional attachment given he passed away 2 years ago (Age 36)... Reason why it is critical that I fix it.
I feel it's a great phone with excellent specs, with some flaws.
Hardware wise, this phone's digitizer seems to fail after a few years and stops registering touches.
Failed on my brother after 8 months, he got it replaced by videotron.
8 months after my ownership, same issue. I replaced the screen, which is a pain.
I dropped it a year later and broke the screen, replaced again.
Replaced the battery twice (First replacement battery was DOA) and... The internals of this phone are a pain to work with... to my limited experience at least.
The get to the point line as stated above.
___________________________________________________________________________________________
I wanted to flash my 4 year old never reinstalled phone, give it new life.
Researched a bit everywhere, verified in the phone what version it is, even most google results tell me this and the replacement screen is all the same.
it's a D801
After some work and research being clueless about working with this model, I finally installed
Started with getting Dev powers by spamming a specific key, setting usb debugging...
Using some application manager.
Installed
D801_AutoRec.apk
Towelroot.apk
From autorec, I installed the twrp and... fastboot... had no idea what that was.
Here I learned how to recover my phone.
This guy... super helpful.
Youtube link removed to post
So in short Download all the necessary drivers to get the android device detected.
Download those
codefi re link removed
I erased and flashed so often now that I scripted it in a batch file
Notepad, save as (not as text) flash****.bat or whatever you want to call it.
fastboot erase boot
fastboot erase aboot
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot erase laf
fastboot erase dbi
fastboot erase modem
fastboot erase persist
fastboot erase PrimaryGPT
fastboot erase rpm
fastboot erase stl1
fastboot erase tz
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash aboot aboot.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

fastboot flash modem modem.img
fastboot flash persist persist.img
fastboot flash PrimaryGPT PrimaryGPT.img
fastboot flash rpm rpm.img
fastboot flash stl1 stl1.img
fastboot flash tz tz.img
Originally, I only did boot aboot recovery and iaf
After that, my phone rebooted to the LG logo and stuck, but the Download mode is working again.
At that point I did flash a twrp recovery and was able to run it using the command abd reboot recovery
I pushed different roms, but no matter what I do, always back to fastboot.
Found this video later on, originally found a thread here but for the life of me I can't find it anymore (too much history) (How to recover with LG Tools the original kdz
youtube link removed
Now... I could not find the correct firmware
I used this
T-Mobile KitKat D80120A_00
IT worked, my phone restarted as it was before my adventures, but under a tmobile d801
Here I am happy, I get the proper D803_AutoRec.apk
Install the recovery again...
Now I really broke my phone.
Retried the steps above of flashing aboot and so on...
Refuses to work.
So I figured, hey, I recovered it under D801 tmobile... I probably broke it with the D803 recovery.
Back to the download site, made another folder and downloaded all the D801 img's
Ran my script (well that's when I created it from being sick of typing it)
Now I boot Tmobile but it's stuck to All Auto Test - FTM Mode
SUrprisingly on wifi,, shows missed calls and picking up exchange emails...
When I try to Flash as I have before under download, it fails.
SO hey, it found a 300MB tmobile update... why the hell not at this point.
Can anyone link me the proper software I can try to recover the LG Tools ?
csmgdl link removed
and
csmgdl link removed
Don't seem to work
Did I mess it up beyond repair ?
Any recommendations ?
I am hoping for one of the following
If I get tmobile OS working
Retry the D801_AutoRec.apk given it matches the tmobile recovery that somewhat works and then attempt the original goal of setting up CloudyFlex_2.8, CloudyStock_2.7 or cm-12-20150325-UNOFFICIAL-d803
Pretty sure up there, most of those wont work, I just want a working twrp
All I want is this phone wiped with a clean efficient rom to use as a reliable daily.
All I do is phone, text, exchange, camera, some apps... nothing too fancy.
I am off to sleep
Whatever I do, I can't get out of All Auto Test = FTM Mode
Reboot, hold volume up
Down
Up and down
Power up
Power down
Power vol up and down...
Always to all auto test.
Swipe down, get to options, general, do a full factory rest...
Same thing. Grr
Okay dude, take it slow. There's only one way to correctly root/install recovery on this device - that seems to work for everyone.
Tell me if this works. Plug a usb cable from the phone into your PC. Shutdown the phone holding power, release power, hold up. Keep shutting it down and doing this again until you get into "Download Mode". Tell me if you manage this.

I have gone to download mode before to recover an oem image.
Now, I can't get to download mode after trying a number of times.
Ill give it another go tonight. Yesterday I got tired from the research, trial and error.
Thanks for your reply
With a calm mind, I fixed my issue.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2613404
Press and hold power + Vol up and tap normal boot.
Didn't understand that at first.
Now let's see if I will break it again.
Still unsure if I should root it using D801_AutoRec.apk or D803_AutoRec.apk
Reason why I hate this phone.
Videotron LG G2 writes that it's a D801 but I read in other sources that it's a D803.
Now however, it's been restored to a Tmobile Firmware...
Okay, take it really slow. I've just completely rooted, put a custom recovery on and am now on Android N. There's many things which can go wrong - requiring you to restart the process.
Treat it as a D801, as the T-Mobile firmware booted. AutoRec does not root the device. Are you on KitKat or Jellybean? If you're on KitKat, do the following.
You must use IORoot to root the device - it does it in such a way it'll accept custom recoveries.
(You already have the phone's USB drivers obviously)
1) Download IORoot V25 from here.
2) Extract the file.
3) We need to unlock USB debugging, so make sure the phone is not connected to the pc. Settings -> About -> Software -> Tap on "Build" like 8 times fast. Go back into settings and you'll see "Developer Options", tick USB debugging. Now if your device freezes up like mine did when tapping build, then download an app which lets you go directly to developer options.
4) Hook the phone up to the PC, make sure it's not in lock screen.
5) Double click "root.bat" normally (not as admin). Keep going through this process until it brings you to the stock recovery area where you can flash over ADB.
6) It'll walk you through the process where it boots back into Android.
7) Open SuperSU, which it installed.
8) In the settings somewhere, make the grant always accept rather than prompt. My device was bugged not allowing root unless it was forcefully granted like this.
AutoRec - Recovery Install
1) Copy the contents "bumpboot-v1.0-blastagator-signed.zip" and "busybox.apk" and "flashify.apk" onto your device. Download here.
2) Download TWRP for T-Mobile 2.8.6.0 from here, extract recovery.img and copy that onto your device.
3) Copy AutoRec KitKat for T-Mobile here.
4) So you should now have "D801_AutoRec.apk", "recovery.img", "busybox.apk", "flashify.apk", "bumpboot-v1.0-blastagator-signed.zip" on your phone.
5) Proceed to install "AutoRec.apk", ticking unknown sources. Let it boot into recovery. Now reboot.
6) As my recovery didn't stick, install and open "busybox.apk", click install in the program itself. Install and open "flashify.apk", flash recovery, browse using flashify to the location of "recovery.img", let it reboot into recovery. This is where I had to flash "bumpboot-v1.0-blastagator-signed.zip", otherwise I couldn't boot into the OS. So flash that file.
7) Reboot back into the OS. Until we flash lollipop, there wasn't any other way for me to reliably get into TWRP recovery without repeating step 6.
8) Copy over the Bootstack and Stock Rom from here. Don't worry about SuperSU or anything else.
9) Repeat step 6 to boot back into recovery.
10) Wipe everything except internal memory in TWRP.
11) Flash the lollipop bootloader.
12) Flash the lollipop stock rom.
13) Reboot.
14) Now you're able to get back into recovery any time by holding the power + volume down combo, releasing when the screen goes on - and holding it down again.
15) Feel free to flash LineageOS 14.1 or anything afterwards. Make sure to backup your EFS partition at some stage before this - just incase you can't connect to cell towers in the near future.
As you can see, I had to improvise a bit. No guide was good enough to just work in 2017 for my D800. These should work fine for your D801.
Thank you so much for such an amazing and detailed response !!!
After quite a bit more research and work, I got it rooted and got TWRP working.
Once done I uploaded cloudyflex 2.8
Installed it and of course, me being me, chose the wrong install when prompted. It asked Tmobile, other and Canadian 803.
I chose Canadian and after that got back to fast boot.
After that I simply erased boot, aboot and laf, getting ready to restart from scratch but it rebooted on a clean cloudyflex 2.8.
At this point, the phone is running better then stock and I am very happy with it
Your walkthrough is great and I will certainly redo my phone soon again.
For one, practice makes perfect and I certainly like that with your instructions, I will be able to call on the recovery when I want it instead of asking my way into it by adb command.
Thank you again for your time
This community rocks !

US996 US Cellular: Already rooted, need TWRP

Hey guys, so, I bought a used V20 US Cellular US996 and it was already rooted (superSU 2.76 installed and working fine). When I try to boot into recovery (using Simple Recovery app), it reboots then I get a screen of static. Now, which guide do I follow to install TWRP or does my phone already have TWRP but I need to do something else to get into recovery? Thx
It may or may not have TWRP. You are getting static because an engineering bootloader had to be used to root your phone.
Easy way to tell is to boot into recovery, and then plug your phone into you PC and run adb devices. If you have TWRP, then it will show your device id and the fact that it is in recovery, like so:
Code:
adb devices
LGUS996cee1f168 recovery
Either way, TWRP isn't much good if you can't see the screen, so you need to flash a version that has a kernel for your phone: link
Download that, and flash it from fastboot:
* adb reboot bootloader (or with the phone off, hold vol DOWN and plug in the USB cable)
* fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.0.2-1-us996.img
* fastboot reboot
You should then have a TWRP that you can use.

Hey Brian, thanks for the great instructions.
When I boot to recovery and get the static screen, I can't communicate with adb. adb devices will simply run and terminate. When it's in the OS, it'll say:
Code:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Minimal ADB and Fastboot>adb devices
List of devices attached
* daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
* daemon started successfully *
LGUS9961bcda6c4 device
The link to the TWRP says US996, but just wanted to confirm it's also good for the US CELLULAR carrier version, not the unlocked?
I'm super scared it'll brick something flashing the wrong recovery.
It is good for both. As for you bricking your phone, no, there is no risk at all. There is also no risk of you losing root. The worst that would happen is that you still don't have recovery -- and I lean on the cautious side when I advise someone as to what is safe and not safe

Nice, got into TWRP
Making a backup of everything now so I can try to remove supersu and move to magisk... any known issues with Magisk on the US996?
Or try another ROM debloated stock rom (want to keep the camera/2nd screen for a while).
Thanks again!
No issues with Magisk and the US996.
As for ROMs, you can use any ROM that says it is for the US996 -- doesn't matter if it is USC or unlocked. Firmware on the other hand, you should stick to USC firmware. I don't own a US996, so don't quote me on this, but I believe there is some signal issue if you cross flash firmware between the USC and unlocked versions.
Just to be safe, you should download the patched LG UP and use the DUMP option (select all and then uncheck userdata or you will be wasting 60+ gigs of space) to backup everything from your phone (that backs up literally everything on your phone that TWRP or other backup apps can't -- or don't backup), that way if you do make a mistake, you have the ability to completely restore your phone.

Doing the dump now, but the weird thing is after it reboots, it goes into the static screen again. I'll test after to see if TWRP is still there or not, but not sure why it's in this mode.
Recovery (stock or TWRP), Download mode (LAF), and boot are all just Linux kernels with an initrd. You are getting static in download mode, because the kernel that download mode uses is relying on aboot for screen init information. That was the case for you with the stock recovery as well. The laf partition is just an Android boot image. If it really bothered you, you could replace the kernel in the laf image and reflash it, but there really isn't anything to see on the firmware update screen, and it works fine.

At the request from @dimm0k
I've made kernels for the 996 unlocked and locked variants here.

Wow, the tool makes a full byte for byte dump of all the partitions. I deleted the userdata partition since it's like 50GB. Deleted cache too.
Using this patched LGUP, I can restore partitions so they're in the exact state of the dump? If I don't restore userdata, will it still work?

Nope, can't restore with LGUP yet. @runningnak3d has been trying to crack it but no luck so far.
So you would need root/twrp to restore those.

FULL ROOT... ON MY HUAWEI XT2!! Twrp supersu and custom rom !!!
Sent from my HUAWEI H1711 using XDA Labs
The problem with this seems to be, at least for me, that a .bz2 file is not recognized by the recovery as an installable zip.
The dd trick worked for me, but the system image here, is not full stock. IT seems to have a mix of super_su and magisk in it.
Root is working, but I can't seem to mount system as r/w
So trying to figure this out. I used this image to do a restore, and my phone was rooted with magisk.
First time a program tried root, it said that super su was installed. When I went to another one, it said that magisk was installed.
Anyrate, at one time I was able to mount system r/w and make changes. Now it seems that I can't for whatever reason. I don't know exactly how I got it
to the state to be able to modify the system.
I actually pulled an entire copy of the rom at one time, with a dd command. Of course that can't be reflashed from twrp. But I'd like to be able to mount it somehow on a pc so I could do a stringsearch for all files that have an ro, in them to find the master files where the filesystems are mounted, and edit those....

HELP PLEEEASE! Bricked h1711
Badly need mmcblk0.img for H1711! Had TWRP and phone was rooted but I screwed up and flashed a wrong IMG. Now I have the dreaded QHSUSB_BULK issue. Nothing but a black screen and a blue light. I googled "How to fix QHSUSB_BULK or Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 error" and went on forum.hovatek.com where it said "This error is an indication that the phone is hard bricked due to a corrupted Bootloader. It could occur randomly or after you make a change to the phone, causing the phone to go into Qualcomm Emergency Download Mode." It also stated that I could fix it by creating a bootable SD card using the phone's original mmcblk0.img file using a program called Win32DiskImager. I don't have mmcblk0.img and I can't boot into recovery or fastboot. PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!!! Also first two links in OP's post don't work. Any files or advise you can contribute would be GREATLY appreciated! THANKS!
mmcblk0.img would contain all phone partitions including those with personal information like IMEI number and the /data partition that should not be shared.
Nobody should be sharing that without understanding it contains their IMEI number and other possibly personal information in /data and I'm sure it would be at least 8-10GB.
And what would you do with the file anyway if you can't get into fastboot or recovery?

What do you recommend I do? All I have is a black screen and a blue light? thank you btw
If it won't go into fastboot mode and won't boot, I think only Huawei can fix it.

What is the link to the info you found?
I have the image you need, but it is 15 GIGs in size, and there is no practical way to send that. I also have a system image, and a boot image with magisk in it, as per the OP.
P.M. me.
I don't see how you can recover this if you don't have recovery or fastboot, and can't boot into the phone. If the bootloader is corrupted, well I just don't know.
Can you get into twrp?
You do know that there are two recoveriess, one erecovery and another recovery.
It seems that POWER and VOL up may get you into one, and POWER and VOL down may get you into another one.
NOTE: I KNOW you can't flash the image via fastboot, cause I tried it. it is just to big.
The files are all to big to post here....
https://nofile.io/f/2sfHn8teU1s/system.img.bz2 I put this up 6 days ago for someone else. I don't know how long the link is good for.
This is the system image from the non-working link. You will need to untar it.
https://nofile.io/f/2sfHn8teU1s/system.img.bz2 <<<<<<<<<< file from Original Post
https://nofile.io/f/vTRffT3CM0s/erecovery.zip <<<<<<<<<< erecovery is same as stock recovery
https://nofile.io/f/3DRA4bYjdsq/twrp-xt2.7z <<<<<<<<<< Hweng's original twrp
https://nofile.io/f/uAET5bTqQVk/patched_boot.zip <<<<<< bootloader patched with magisk for a root that does not touch the system partition.
I'll try to put the 15 gig mmblockp0 up here if it will take it, but it is at the office.
I hope this helps.
I now also have a virgin system image, stock. The image given above appears to also have supersu installed it int.
at least it has a su in the system image. Where magisk, just patches the boot image as I understand it.
Any luck on that stock system.img? I formatted mine like an idiot and now sitting on a phone with no OS
same as above, i will even take the rooted system.img i have all other files needed.
I'm a little bit of a noob at all of this but could someone explain to me how they got twrp and root on their xt2? I can really only process step by step and I haven't found that anywhere yet. I'm getting this phone later today so it'd be really cool to get root on it

My device suffered the same fate, only a blue light black screen unable to enter boot or recovery. I slowly removed the back cover using my fingernails and removed the two screws holding the metal plate above battery on the right. Popped the left most plug to disconnect the power flow and allow phone to power off completely. Be careful not to touch any of the metal near the plug or you will short. I plugged it back in and held volume down while I inserted USB connected to computer. Tada!! Back in action fastboot ready... So OK now what?? I can't seem to be able to flash an update. Zip just keeps saying failed to load, and system image is too big. Can someone point me to the correct files I need to get her working again? Thanks in advance.

[OP6T] fastboot erase persist

Hello ALL!
I normally don't message much because usually I can find most of my problems can be fixed by searching threads online. However, this particular case for me has been exhausting because through trial and error I have been unsuccessful in getting my 6T to boot into any rom normally.
I went from a stock T-Mobile to International version to LOS. The reason I did what I did was because I could get a IMEI or SIM to register on LOS. That worked fine on OOS 9.0.11. but as soon a I flash the latest LOS, no sim, bootloader, or IMEI detection.
I was rooted and unlocked. Now I am neither.
While on LOS, someone on another forum suggested to erase the persist partition and reflash to get the sim imei back so the phone would get service, when the phone rebooted it still didn't work and then the second time it rebooted it always gets stuck on the boot screen and never boots into the OS.
I tried to repair and reflash but was unsuccessful.
Since doing all of that, Ive reflashed using msm tool and although that was successful for OOS 9.0.11 and T-Mobile stock rom. It gets stuck on the boot screens for both.
I flashed LOS on A & B so I don't have a stock recovery.
I can't ADB anymore. I can only seem to connect via FASTBOOT but cannot seem to flash anything because the BOOTLOADER is now LOCKED.
How can I get this phone back to its original state? What ever the persist partition is. Removing it had made the phone non-bootable.
What can I do to fix? I greatly appreciate any help to get the phone operational again.
Thank you all!

- Go to the thread linked above and download the latest OOS (.13) stable.
- Download latest Magisk.
- Have the latest TWRP .img downloaded and on-hand, you will use a few times as well as the installer .zip.
- Be sure to have adb/fastboot installed.

- Put your phone into fastboot mode (reboot to bootloader).
- Go to the folder you downloaded in the first step and run the "flash all.bat".
- Ignore errors. If it's get stuck for more than 45 seconds, just hit enter to keep it going.
- OOS will boot. Go to settings, enable developer setting, enable advanced reboot and reboot bootloader again.
- Use "fastboot boot 'twrp-file-name'.img" to boot into TWRP.
- In TWRP, go to Reboot and changed the boot partition to the one NOT CURRENTLY enabled. In other words, switch boot partitions.
- Reboot bootloader.
- Go to the folder you downloaded in the first step and run the "flash all.bat" again.
- OOS will boot. Go to settings, enable developer setting, enable advanced reboot and reboot bootloader again.
- Use "fastboot boot 'twrp-file-name'.img" to boot into TWRP again.
- Move Magisk installer and TWRP installer from steps two and three onto the internal memory of your device.
- Flash TWRP, reboot recovery to make sure it sticks.
- Flash Magisk for root.
- Wipe dalvik and reboot system.
You will have the latest stable OOS on both partitions at this point! I literally just did this yesterday. Good luck!

Thank you but how can I flash if my bootloader is locked? Everything I try fails.
I guess the real question is: How can I get the phone to turn on OEM UNLOCK so I can fastboot unlock the Bootloader if it wont boot up the OS?
Is there a way to fix it via the msmdownload tool? Custom file maybe? I've tried the files 9.0.11 & 12 OOS files and all I get is the boot screen white ball logo circling the red ball - stuck in loop and same with stock t-mobile rom.
My friend, sounds like you need to restore your EFS partitions
... I'm trying to figure out how the hell you successfully flashed MSM tool in EDL mode and not have ALL your partitions restored. That tool is supposed to literally write the phone as it came out of the box. Also I think there are different MSM tools for each device respectively, you did use the T-Mobile one right?

My thoughts exactly. So, when it was on LOS I erased the persist partition and that really messed things up. So yes, how can I restore the partition back with a locked bootloader? Every time I've used MSM tool it fixes everything. This time no such luck. I flashed 9.0.11 & 12 and then I did the T-Mobile version. All only boot to the boot screen and hang. In doing so, I wasn't thinking if that failed and it locks the bootloader, then what? I saw an old video somewhere on a oneplus 2 or 3 where the person used the msm tool 3.0 and fixed a bricked locked bootloader phone. Similar to the fastboot method of reformatting. In the msm tool folder he had all the image files for all the partitions not sure if that the same thing as msm tool 4.0 with just one ops image file?
Anyway, is there a way to unlock the bootloader without booting into the OS? Or a way to restore the partitions via msm tool?

Tried 9.0.13. Still gets stuck on OOS boot animation screen. There's got to be something to flash to fix this.
So you're booting EDL mode then flashing the MSM tool that exactly matches the way your phone came stock? At this point I would discontinue trying to convert it to international or upgrade the OS to a more recent version or any of that. I would focus on strictly flashing it to exactly the way you bought it.

Yes. I did flash the stock T-Mobile ROM via the MSM tool. Freezes at the pink T-Mobile boot screen. Pretty sure the partitions need to be fixed but I thought the MSM tool would do that? I guess not. Is there a more advanced MSM tool where I can see what's being partitioned or is the MSM tool not doing any partitioning and that's why the phone is having the boot problem?

I know this is a stupid question but have you tried a factory reset in recovery mode? I know its a stupid question but I did not see it asked or noted.

No stupid questions and I don't mind repeating answers to questions. I have tried that, but it does nothing. I get wipe cache or reboot to fastboot or reboot to recovery. When I choose system wipe, it takes 1 second to finish. It reboots and it gets stuck on the boot screen. Ever since persist partition was deleted it just freezes on startup and now that the bootloader is locked I cant seem to get anything to work. MSM tool I thought was supposed to fix this sort of thing but it has failed. Someone must know a way to get back into the OS so I can turn on OEM Unlock.

Fastboot says bootloader is locked. Shows it on the fastboot screen. Wont let me transfer any files from pc to phone. I can start the transfer process but it fails.

So you're able to enter EDL mode with a locked bootloader? How do you know your computer is seeing your device in EDL mode?
I'm going to place this here for myself for now. I'm just trying to understand your situation a little better, but this is just for later.... maybe, depending on your answer. https://forum.xda-developers.com/an...how-to-reboot-to-edl-fastboot-t3394292/page12
ALSO; If you don't mind can you link the thread that contains the original discussion where your problem began?

The point of EDL is to get around any restrictions or issues with the device, so yes, you can boot to EDL while locked. Your link will not help much because he can already get to EDL. Not to mention he will have no ADB access. Whatever he does, he has to fix it in EDL.
OP: Are you up and running yet? I am willing to try copying out my partition and sending to you.
Let me know...

Wait, I just realized that my persist.img would not work because he has no way to flash it.
Nevermind.
