S9 plus vr compatibility - Samsung Galaxy S9+ Accessories

Hello,
Is anyone aware which VR headset I can purchase that will work on my s9 plus.
Samsung are not releasing one in 2018. So far.
The latest one is for the note 8 plus. Which was released in November 2017. This one works with the s9 plus according to CNET.

Has anyone used a VR headset with their s9 plus?
Has anyone purchased the new day dream 2 by Google and used that with their s9 plus?
I'm looking forward to reading your comments.. ??

Gear VR SM-R323 is working with S9+ (it fits and it is recognized as Gear VR).

Good to know. I might look in to the Google day dream 2. I've used a gear vr with my s6 plus a few years ago.
I want to branch out to Google, knowing their quality!
Need to confirm if anyone has used it first.
Cibor. Is the gear vr on s9 plus improved from previous versions?
Does it work for longer? On my s6 I could get 15 mins out of it before it over heats and stops working.
I hope with the s9 plus you can watch a VR video for more that 20 mins before the handset asks to cool down ??

I have the original Daydream headset (latest version is pretty much the same thing, just more accommodating of larger phones) and, personally, I find it to be a waste of money. The Gear VR experience is significantly better. Daydream is just a glorified version of Google Cardboard with a controller. If you want to know what the experience will be like with the Daydream 2, just give Cardboard a try and see if it's up your alley.

Is it pieces of cake or pieces of Bing? Haha Thanks for you comment!
That is good to know! I have used a Google cardboard before.
Gear VR sounds like a good idea then... well better than whats out there
I amm going to keep an ear open on the Samsung rumor moon to see if a new Gear VR is in the works.. I damn hope so
Thanks

Just enable Samsung Gear VR Dev mode and you enable the VR feature without an official plug in head set. I'm currently using a $5 cheaply made Walmart VR headset and I get the full experience.

No, I regret to inform you that you're not getting the full experience.
The Gear VR has its own sensors which operate at a far higher resolution than the one in the phone (some of the same internal hardware as the Oculus Rift, actually). Also the touchpad and buttons are on the side which are all connected via usb when inserting the phone into the device. The newer units include the motion controller which further enhances the experience.
The software also operates at a low level enabling low persistence and less latency.
You will not get the full experience without the Gear VR headset, and none of the Gear VR's hardware advantages can be found in the Daydream or any 3rd party headsets of which I'm aware.

The 2017 gear vr with controller works perfectly with the s9 plus

Could you confirm the model number please? I want to make sure I'm purchasing the correct one ?

Everything headset from SM-R323 -> SM-R325 work fine. Using the R325 myself (could have gotten a 50% discount by using samsung pay that I missed).

I have the most recent version of both Gear VR and Daydream VR, and there is really no comparison. The Gear VR platform blows Daydream VR out of the water. I feel like the Daydream is a lost and forgotten platform by Google. It feels like like the software was created in the early 2000s, and there is hardly any content, which surprises me, given how great Google's AR platform is.

That's not my experience. I own a SM-R323 (bought for my S7 Edge) and a S9+.
The S9+ is about 1mm too long to fit into my headset. It docks fine into the USB-C cradle, and "plings" / starts Oculus, but I can't actually click the phone into the headset holder itself. The phone is too long to fit into the top-end bracket that holds the phone in place.
Maybe I could force the phone in... it's only ever-so-slightly too large. But that looks like it could damage either the USB-C port or the top of my phone.
Since we're talking just ~1mm of clearance needed, it could maybe vary from headset to headset, so YMMV. But my S9+ doesn't fit into my VR SM-R323.

My S9+ fits in my VR SM-323. It just barely fits but that's on a naked phone with no case, vinyl wrap, or screen protector.

R325NZVAXAR is the model that I bought, and it fits great. No problems, and is oh so smooth. The S9+ has a little more screen door than the s7edge, but at least it doesn't discharge when plugged in and doesn't overheat.

Get the R325 definitely for s9+ just make sure you lock the is adapter in place (there's a slider after fitting it in). First time I used mine the phone fell out, luckily no damage but heart stopping. The resolution is massively improved over the s7 edge. And the controller makes life so much easier. And seems like there's no overheating problems. Only thing I don't like is how many permissions everything wants. Occulus wanted my google account which I granted before questioning. Get it 2nd hand from cex, I did and it was actually still all in its original wrapping. Happy days!

Samsung Galaxy Gear is awesome, being able to root, use the Play Store, set your own launcher and all is great. After all, it's based on Jelly Bean (4.1.2 - I believe), but it's limited in many ways compared to the alternatives, and limited to certain devices... The Galaxy Gear is priced at $299.
The Sony SmartWatch 2 is limited in functionality, as far as we know, however I won't knock it as not too many people stateside have gotten their hands on one. That's at a $199 price point.
The Omate TrueSmart, (a KickStarter Funded Project that's available for Pre-Order w/ Dec. Shipping) on is a lot like the Galaxy Gear but has ruggedized properties, runs Android 4.2.2, has capability of running the Play Store (see below, as Lokifish Mars explains), water resistant, has a microphone, camera, speaker, is rootable, Bluetooth, microSD card support, and can even be used as a standalone phone, has complete stock Android interface, with add-ons for $299 w/ the higher RAM option.
To me its a no-brainer, Omate TrueSmart, right???
I own a prehistoric Sony Smartwatch, like the idea of smart watches, but what's with all the hype over the Gear? Why not go with the TrueSmart??? The Pebble seems stupid to me, only because for the price, it doesn't do THAT much for $199 and I'd rather spend $100 more on something more functional, even though I'll loose out on the super e-Ink low energy battery life technology. If money grows on trees in your family, buy them all if that's what makes you happy, but I'm just trying to be practical...
Yes, Google will probably release a smartwatch pretty soon, with Google Now/Search, but I doubt it'll be fully Android featured like the TrueSmart...
And I'm sure Apple will release an iWatch that has a clockface, pause/play button, and a few other features, (Siri with luck) for $129, and call it the First (using a stupid word like...) Innovative or Intellectual smartphone companion watch, and Samsung will eat them alive in court while Sony, Pebble, and Omate watch and eat popcorn while Samsung fights.
Excuse the large images, xda needs an image resizer, and I really don't feel like resizing them myself and reuploading... too much work, bleh...

Yes, it is a no-brainer.
And where did you find that the gear could be rooted? Is a root available already?
That URL shows the top smartwatches, sweet! Omate TrueSmart beats them all for the most part. Also, the Gear can be rooted, xda thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2480429

Thank you, updated the website to show that. But yes, the TrueSmart ousts pretty much all of them, in nearly every category. It's ridiculous.
They still haven't figured out how to get the internet working on the gear as far as I know. Since it doesn't have wifi they have to figure out how to get it through bluetooth.
Either way, here's my opinion.
Get the Omate if you want something that can do more than be an accessory to your phone. Or if you want an accessory that has the most rooting and messing around with potential. It blows the others out of the water in terms of specs.
Get the Gear if you just strictly want an accessory, and maybe want to run specific apps on it. If you really want to get into rooting and stuff you'll probably want it to have the sensors and radios it doesn't have. I find that with my Motoactv...I want it to have a cellular antenna so it has internet all the time, no wifi or bluetooth messing around. Yeah, it's still totally rad, but it could be BETTER. Enter the Omate.
Get the Sony if you want strictly an accessory. Stay away even if you have the slightest inclination to mess around with it cause you can't. It's running on a proprietary OS. If however it does everything you want, I'd get it over the gear to save some money and get a slimmer device.
It feels like Omate vs. Sony Smartwatch/Gear is like Android vs. iOS respectively, why limit yourself, especially when you're paying around the same price... If the device is so limited, why price it with the big boys?

Sadly this is not correct. Here's what we do know.
TrueSmart will initially ship with it's own app store.
No version of Android 4.3.1 and lower will ever officially support Google Services (Play Store, Gmail app and so on) on smartwatches like the TrueSmart. This now leaves only versions of Android that haven't even been announced yet and tells folks that if they are running 4.3.1 or lower then they will not have official Google Services.
A PC based app, root or custom recovery is being looked at to allow non-developer editions running 4.3.1 or lower the ability to push unofficial Google Services to the TrueSmart.
Here's what we don't know
Will Android 4.4 or higher support smartwatches like the TrueSmart.
Will the TrueSmart receive certification for Android 4.4 or higher to include official Google Services.
Why does my cat like eating plastic.
*All that aside I still think the TrueSmart is a more capable device out of the box. The specs also allow for a more long term lifespan with regards to Android versions and apps updates.
@Lokifish Marz That is true, I saw a Play demo, and what I read about the Play store was unofficial, and Loki - it's been a while, since the Photon days haha. (OP updated).

It has been a while. Five different devices later and I ended up back on the Photon.
With repos dropping off for Ubuntop I figured it was time to move on and will be on two different smartwatches for the foreseeable future. The TS will be my main device though.

Unfortunately, the comparison is based on a tech spec which is useless. You need a hands'on comparison from someone who has been using these watches for awhile.
the Omate TrueSmart isn't a no-brainer for everyone, it all depends on what you want from your (smart)watch
i have the smartwatch 2 now, but i wouldn't even call it a smartwatch, it's just a second display, the real magic happens on your phone and it can't do much without it
but that's fine with me, all i wanted from a smartwatch, when i first found out they existed, is:
1) it can act as a watch (duh )
2) not be huge, preferably less then 10mm thick
3) display notifications coming from my phone (facebook/twitter/whatsapp/etc)
4) have a battery life of at least 3-4 days
5) be waterproof
that really hasn't changed, i don't need a watch to replace my smartphone
i'm not going to read email/news/etc or surf the wen on my watch, my Butterfly S is perfect for that, 5 inch 1080p screen, not even the Neptune Pine comes close
the sw2 does most of those things right, but it doesn't seem like Sony is too interested in making it a success, releasing it without options shown in presentations and even on the box it comes in
the latest update has solved some issues and some watch faces were added, but overall i'm not impressed
and a really big one: the fact it fell apart within 2 months
and it's happening quite a lot, plenty of posts on xda and sony mobile forum, some even reported it falling apart after 3 days!
that's why i think for me the HOT Watch is a 'no-brainer', it does all those 5 things, with as added bonus, the private call function. i'm really looking forward trying that out
maybe in couple of years, smartwatches will replaces smartphones, but that will need flexible displays and much better batteries
I can only speak from an experience of reading about Gear and SW2, and having TS for a few days
Gear and SW2 will have all the notification working as expected tethered to your phone, and rooting Gear will give you a true android experience, although battery life is not that good. Plus, try to go outside with Gear shoveling snow (we just got our first storm in NJ), and getting it wet - forget 'bout it. Proprietary charger is not ideal either. Sony SW2 sounds like having a lot of build quality issues; it's alarming when I read posts on xda about screen coming off, etc. It should work fine with notifications (I talked to Augmented SW Pro developer - it's fully supported), you get some level of waterproof protection, regular micro-usb charging, and you can run some apps on it, but obviously it's not a true Android experience. I also like an idea of time always being displayed on SW2.
True Smart, hard to form an impression yet since I just installed Loki's ROM and can only use it as a mini android wifi device on my wrist. I don't have GSM sim card, on Verizon with CDMA, and personally think it makes no sense to drain your battery with 3G or even wi-fi use. It is a stand alone mini android watch so you can run different apps, browse the web, check emails, type on it, etc. But since I have a developers edition sent to me for review purpose, the software is not currently available. I mean, there is no way for me to have bt connection to my Note 2 to push notifications - the #1 purpose of any smart watch as a remote display of your out-of-sight phone. At the current moment, I can't properly review it until the final release of firmware and companion phone app is available. In general, the camera is really useful as POV action video cam, but awkward to take pictures. Bracelet is made out of a very cheap rubber material. The watch is a bit bulky, but it feels VERY solid inside of metal casing. Display is responsive, and the issues I'm seeing (like sometime back swipe from within apps doesn't respond as Back android key) probably due to firmware issues. Once a final firmware/software is released - this smartwatch going to SHINE!!! But until then, I will wait before writing my review. It's funny how a lot of people pre-ordered Dev edition in hope to receive it asap, but getting it earlier doesn't mean they can start enjoying it to full potential right away.
GG has 4.2.2 lol
Interesting to read these posts--in the light of current Non-News from Omate--I realise that @vectron and @lokifish have both got their hands on versions of the TrueSmart but, most of the rest of us are still waiting to form any sort of opinion.
Some folks talk about 'asking for refunds' based on some negative feedback, delivery date shenanigans, etc.. but I am still waiting, fairly patiently, to really find out what the Omate is all about.
P.S. I found @ClearD's website with comparisons of most current Smartwatches very interesting--thanks.
For me, its the Truesmart. I don't want a big phone and the 5" phones are so powerful now that the screen isn't capable of keeping up. For example, Injustice: Gods Among Us and other HD games can't be fully appreciated on a phone. Surfing the web is a pain.
So I've switched to using a tablet for games, surfing, watching movies etc. I will use the watch for simple things like picking up MMS, emails, phone calls etc while I'm out the house. If I'm at the gym or out for a run, I don't need to bring a phone, I'll just wear the watch.
If I'm travelling, I'll take my tablet and use the watch to create a WiFi hotspot.
This means I don't need amazing specs from the watch but the stand alone phone function and ability to create a WiFi hotspot are critical. I will upgrade my tablet instead of my phone, which is a much cheaper option - new tablets cost £200-£300, whereas new phones are £600ish.

I had a Sony smartwatch 2, it was a boring device and I don't know why. Today I have a Galaxy gear and I love it, now that we can enable notifications for every app, I really love it. I am considering buying a Qualcom Toq, does anyone have one and want to share your opinions?

Not IP67 as stated by Umeox Mobile. The watch is completely dead.
I've had the 320x320 resolution watch for a few weeks, here are my issues:
1. As a potential sports watch I was taken aback by the bulky size and steel body weight of 121g. I'm not sure if it’s practical for sports, the sheer weight might damage or loosen the strap with time if you run a lot with it.
2. The top button did not have a same clicking feel as the bottom button.
3. I can see the glue around the side camera. see photo.
4. The charging socket is heavy, it does not stick well magnetically while charging, if you move the watch its easily comes apart. You have to hold the charger against the watch if you want to use the watch while charging.
5. Difficult to open the back cover to insert an SD card and its not recommended by Unova.
6. The OS need rooting to get to the deeper settings; most of the settings are hidden/locked.
7. Google Maps keeps crashing with location is turned on ...keeps doing it.
8. The sensors are only useful if there are apps for it.
9. With Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on battery it went from 97% to 70% in one hour, but it was on the first charge.
10. Speaker is below average, not too loud; I would depend on it as an alarm.

no -160 - but the form factor is the same.
Anyone here who has this watch in use on a daily basis? I am thinking about buying this watch. So any opinions on this product here? I am wondering if you can flash a custom rum such as cyanogenmod on it?
I got this with the idea to use it as a running watch, It arrived on Wednesdays but I had to go away for a few days so only had a few hours to play with it.
I got back this afternoon and have had another few hours with it.
So here are my initial impressions.
First of all it is very big and quite heavy at 120 grams.
The screen is very good and the icons of your applications are quite clear, however with certain apps like endomondo, runkeeper and micoach when you open the app the screen either doesn't show all of the information or squashes it.
Other apps such as Facebook and YouTube etc. all work well.
I am disappointed that there is no SD Card slot because I thought that it was going to have one. After I e-mailed Unova I have been informed that there is an SD card slot but you have to take the back of the watch to reach it. In their words "we don't allow end users to open and install themselves."
I won't be using the watch as a phone and do not have a Micro sim card to test it.
The WiFi and GPS seem to function well with Endomondo and Runkeeper both getting a GPS signal in my apartment quite quickly. I haven't tested it outside yet.
The biggest problem I have is that the watch does not recognize my BT heart rate monitor. I have to use a separate app to find it which is okay but Adidas micoach won't connect and neither will Endomondo the two apps that I would have used.
Runkeeper and Wahoo fitness both do find the heart rate monitor though I haven't yet tried it running.
I haven't done a battery test yet.
Overall I am not entirely unhappy with the watch but neither am I blown away by it.
I paid $250 with shipping to France which compared to any of the Android wear watches makes it quite good value with added functionality and certainly when you compare it to some of the more specific GPS sport watches which can run up to $400+.
I have also been told that it is not very water proof so if you do decide to take the plunge be careful getting it wet.
Too Big!
Thanks Gah73 for your detailed answer. The biggest problem i see, and you said it also, in those china smartwatches (or you should better say smartphones) is the fact, that the thickness of this devices is just too high! I saw a screenshot which compared other smartwatches with the Unova Ironman and the Unova is just huge and doesn't look sexy at all (however, the hardware in it is quite sexy though ). I think i will wait for other devices which could replace a smartphone functionality wise but are not bigger then 12 mm.
@Gah73
It would be really great if you could post some photos of the watch (from the sides, from top, from the active display)!
Having spent a few more days with the watch I have to say it is growing on me.
The thickness doesn't bother me so much but the weight is very noticeable.
I have a Sony Smartwatch 3 coming this week and I will choose between them.
I will take some photos of them together but it won't be until the weekend.
I have a feeling that I will be keeping the ironman due to the limitations of the Sony.

Thank you for posting your experience. I am thinking about getting this for my wife to use when she runs. She doesn't like having to carry her phone with her.
- Is the speaker loud enough to listen to music when you run? (I suspect not)
- Have you tried pairing it with bluetooth running earphones?
- Is there any chance you could install "C25K Couch to 5K by RunDouble" and see if it is usable? (I realize that is a big request, but that is the app my wife uses and there is no point in me getting the watch if it doesn't work). I really wish there was a way to test apps on a small screen to see if they would work without having to get the device first.
It seems like if xposed works on this watch the DPI could probably be changed so that most apps could be made to work.
Thanks again for posting - it really helps those of us who are looking!
RunDouble
The speaker is surprisingingly loud but probably not loud enough to listen to music whilst running.
I have had no problem connecting BT headphones, I use Jabra sport and also have some Plantronics headphones and a Plantronics headset.
I installed the app and it worked well, I connected headphones and a BT heart rate monitor, they both worked.
An advert took up some of the screen but it was very usable I think.
I had previously changed the font size from large to small because when it was large some apps did not fit the screen very well. With it set to small the apps fit better but writing is harder to read.
Thank you very much for your answer,
i am really looking forward to some detailed photos :good:
Maybe you have some answers for my questions:
Can you switch between some different launchers?
Is it possible to root this device and install custom roms on it?
Can you install normal Google Play Store apps?
I haven't tried any different launchers.
The software is pretty good on the phone already.
There is a specific watch launcher on the play store.
You can install all apps on the phone but they might not size very well.
I couldn't log into Google music as I couldn't select my account.
I don't know of any custom ROMs for it, I read that the adidas running watch is based on Android so that would be good if it could be flashed.
Unova have an app that you can install on your phone and then you receive notifications on your watch. That works quite well.
Okay, thanks for your answers. You are really helping me on choosing the right smartwatch
Can you shoot some photos of the watch from different angles (side, top, bottom etc.)? The images on aliexpress are actually meaningless.

Thanks - this is great information. I went ahead and ordered one - hopefully she'll like it.
Is this the same device with different branding: http://forum.xda-developers.com/omate-truesmart/general/poll-umeox-x202-kk4-4-320x320-ip68-t2882896
I think Unova is a brand name for Umeox.

Review
README: Being my first Smart Watch review, you might not expect a great review but...you only can say it
Introduction
This is the second SmartWatch released by OUKITEL, the A58. It is an huge upgrade compared to the previous A28, with a sharp IPS screen, excellent speaker quality and innovative UI.
It is powered by the common MT2502C CPU by Mediatek, this is the 2nd gen. of SmartWatch CPU that provides better performance and so on
Unboxing
The package contains basic accessories: 1x Charging Dock, 1x Micro-USB Cable, 1x Manual and the SmartWatch (of course)
Its charging dock feels pretty solid, but it isn't so friendly with the Metal Chassis, infact you will notice that i scratched the device near the power button. I recommend to add something soft that doesn't allow the chassis to be in direct contact with the plastic.
Design & Features
Unlike some other smartwatches, this comes with a Metal Chassis supported by a Plastic Back Cover. Also, it comes with a real-leather wrist, that in my case is Black, with Golden Chassis. I know, the color might not be appreciated by some users, but there is also a Silver version that looks pretty good, especially if you replace the leather wrist with a metal wrist.
On the right side there is the Power/Action Button, while on the back side there are the Charging Dock Pins and the Heartrate Sensor.
Its 1.61" IPS screen is just great, do not trust my photos because they look weird, but in real-life i can guarantee you that it is excellent. High-Brightness, Sharp and with Vivid Colors, probably the best small screen i have ever seen. Also, OUKITEL declares to use Sapphire Glass (you'll find a pre-installed plastic protector that i have removed), and it might be true (i can't be sure though) because i'm not able to see any scratch on the screen even after many days of usage. Well Done OUKITEL!
This doesn't mean that it is perfect, its high-brightness isn't battery-friendly. I can't reach more than 1 day and a half with a full charge. I don't know if this is normal or not, but others might prefer a larger battery. I plug my smartwatch every time i have access to the charging dock, basically every time i get back home, so this isn't a problem for me.
As regards the UI, there are many useful features such as Stopwatch, Pedometer, Calendar and many others. Just see my photos below to see all available features.
Even if there is a Pedometer & Sleep Monitor, they have to be activated in order to be used, it means that those features do not work as on Smart Bands where everything is automatically managed. I think this has been made to save battery, so yeah this is a nice idea, but for those for think to replace their Smart Bands it might be an issue.
There are some Clock UIs available that you can choose. Here you can see two of them, Analog & Digital. I'm using the Digital Clock because it is easier to read, and modern.
Notifications are handled through the Android's (or iOS depending on your device) app, and they work almost perfect, except Whatsapp Notification when you have multiple messages, because they get merged without having a list to access. Skype, Telegram and others work perfect though.
The Messaging app doesn't have any issue, you can read all the Device's messages and reply using quick-replies just like "I'll reply you later" or a simple smile "". You can't reply with your own messages, but it is still better than nothing.
As regards the Phone management, it works unexpectedly great. The Dialer is easy-to-use, and the Contacts app is smooth and manages to get also different numbers from the single contact (e.g. a contact with two numbers, mobile and work).
Also the Audio Quality while in-call is good, the Loudspeaker is so loud that the whole SmartBand almost vibrates just like a Subwoofer when there are low frequencies. Voice gets a bit distorted on maximum volume, but with medium volume it is just fine.
When it comes to Audio Quality using BT Music, then you can find the best quality even at maximum volume. Sincerely i'm impressed, it sounds even better than some Smartphone's Speaker. It can be used as a Mini Bluetooth Speaker, but only if you don't mind about battery life hehe.
The Heartbeat Sensor seems to work fine, i don't have another one that i can use to make a comparision, but it seems to be accurate enough and also pretty fast. It just needs 5-10 seconds to get calibrated.
Android App
This is where all Mediatek Smartwatches lose their quality. The Official App linked by OUKITEL in the A58's Manual is the "Fundo Wear" app but....on Android 6 it doesn't work. So i had to use the "Fundo SmartDevice" app that basically is the same app, provided by the same app publisher, but with less features. (no pedometer sync, no sleep monitor sync)
It has almost everything that you need to manage the SmartWatch though. Notifications can be choosen just by triggering the requested apps.
There is the Alert feature that allows you to set the maximum distance between the Device and the SmartWatch so that you won't lose it easily. Basically, it records the Bluetooth Signal Level, and based on this data it alerts you as soon it gets lower. That's a nice feature, but highly dependent on your Device's BT Antenna.
It is also required to Sync Contacts to the SmartWatch and everything else. The only features that you won't be able to manage are: Pedometer, Sleep Monitor and Heartrate. If you have an Android 5.1 device, then you can install the other app and manage also these features.
Conclusion
This device has an huge potential inside, and it is probably one of the best available SmartWatch without Android Wear, but OUKITEL should develop an ad-hoc Android App that would make it even better than how is it now without compatibility issues between different Android versions.
I can't find anything else negative, considering its low-price and high-quality materials, i can say that this is the best-buy unless you don't like its design. Recommended!
Pros:
High-Fidelity & Bright Screen
Great Sound Quality
Full of Sensors (Gesture, Heartrate...)

Cheap
Cons:
Mediocre Battery Life
Low-Quality Android App

Great review, for me being able to reply to notification through voice dictation is a must have.... I'm surprised that any watch realised in 2016 can't do it.

On Android 6 you can only use the "Fundo SmartDevice" app.

Sure, i still have it. 2/3 hours is just impossible, are you sure that yours isn't faulty?
Any USB charger can charge it, even a 5V/3A is just fine, the Smartwatch will just use the correct current from the charger (that should be pretty low, less than 0.5A)
how long does your battety lasts if you keep the step counter ative/enabled all the time?

Galaxy S8 and S6 Bluetooth Audio Distortion

Hi guys,
I previously did some investigation with this issue in this thread , where I had distorted audio on my JBL speaker. However the problem is different now and happens on multiple Samsung devices.
When using Bluetooth audio with my brand new car, the audio from my Galaxy S8 is distorted so that treble sounds like static, like as if the sound is a really low bitrate or playing from some old broken radio.
Today i got my S8 replaced under warranty - so im using a BRAND NEW factory fresh phone and still getting this horrible distortion.
We also have an S6 Edge in our family and it sounds the same. However, other phones sound fine in the car.
Car: 2016 Honda Civic
Phones attempted:
Galaxy S8 SM-G950F, One purchased in April, One brand new today 20 July, both sound really distorted
Galaxy S6 Edge sounds really distorted
Sony Xperia Z3 Compact sounds normal, high quality
iPhone 6 sounds normal, high quality
Apps tried:
Spotify Premium with Extreme Quality downloaded songs
Google Play Music
Native Samsung music player
Youtube for Android
Native Sony Xperia player on the Z3 (sounded great)
Native Music player on iPhone 6 (sounded great)
Car is of course under warranty but cant really blame it as it only happens on Samsung phones, not other phones. Any idea why this is happening?
My guess is something wrong with Samsung's bluetooth drivers. Is there some incompatibility between Bluetooth versions? Would really appreciate your thoughts thanks.

Thanks mate! im going to try and raise this with Samsung soon at the Melbourne Central store where I live. No idea if we'll get anywhere.
For my car at least, my workaround is play using Android Auto. Pros: sound is clear, Cons: Car EQ settings are not accessible without exiting Android Auto (but thats a Honda problem anyway).
Having same issue in 2017 Opel Astra K with intellilink 900 audio
The solution is throwing your phone to the garbage! I had to switch to an iphone again because of that issue! No one in Samsung was able to solve the problem. That’s a big shame!

Sorry to say but there’s no solution to the problem.. I had 2 S8 replacements and Samsung has refunded my money back assuming that there’s no solution. If you have 2 devices paired at the same time you will lose sound quality. Maybe sometime in the future Samsung will fix the issue with an update but right now there’s no permanent fix.

had same problem - after removing Gear S3 quality improved.
I think the problem is that Gear S3 establishes permament audio connection with the phone taking portion of BT bandwith
now i own suunto and no such problem either with speakers or audio in car

Nope. It happens with any bluetooth device. Even with a simple Bluetooth tracker paired, the sound quality decreases. Not only with gear s3. Sorry, but at the moment there’s no fix. I’ve tested everything you can imagine (with samsung technicians by my side at support center) without success. When you pair ANY Bluetooth device together with your Bluetooth headphones, the quality decreases. [emoji31]
Cheers.

Sucks because I have a moto 360 paired at all times. This limitation didn't happen with my previous phone...
Hey,
I also had this problem for a while.
Maybe there will be a solution in 1-2 months for all of us.
After the oreo beta arrived in germany today I installed it right away and the bluetooth sound quality seems to be way better.
I noticed less treble distortion than before, some songs I couldn't hearwithout skipping them now sound way clearer.
Update placebo effect? Who knows.
I still have to confirm this a few more times over the next few days but today was the first time this month that I didn't want to throw my device out of the window while driving.
Maybe you could also enroll in the beta and try it for yourself?
Connected devices are:
moto360 1st gen
Fitbit charge HR with constant sync
(don't laugh) pokemon go plus
Alpine Car radio
I am using poweramp in the 3.x alpha version.
This setup worked flawlessly for almost a year with my old nexus 6P and I hope it will continue to work as good as today with my S8+...

Hello everyone, I've been having the same exact issue for a while now (Galaxy S8 + Honda Civic 2017 audio) and just updated to Android Oreo (non-beta) and, unfortunately the issue is still there. I can't tell if the sound quality improved a bit or not, but it's definitely not perfect (as it used to be with other phones). I just tried playing the exact same song using Google Play Music on my S8 and on my wife's iPhone and the difference is very clear! This is so frustrating!
I have a Note 8 and a 2018 Civic and bluetooth sounds distorted as described.
I haven't tried it yet as I haven't had the chance because I just got Oreo on T-mobile last night, but there are some options for bluetooth protocols under developer options now, and I changed mine to AptX. Let's hope that fixes things. I think I read elsewhere it could just simply be that. But now that I have it I'll give it a go tonight and report back!

Just read another thread here at XDA that says changing the Bluetooth AVRCP Version to AVRCP 1.6 (defautl is AVRCP 1.4) fixes sounds issues, so I'd start there. I'll be trying it in about 2 hours if no one else gets to it earlier!

I tried changing to AVRCP 1.6 and, unfortunately, it made no difference. I also tried changing other settings like codec or bit rate, but most of the changes were not accepted, probably due to my car audio not supporting them. The one that it did accept changing was LDAC quality (which probably makes no difference since it doesn't appear to support LDAC), but it made no difference either.
It's so frustrating having a flagship phone and getting such crappy audio quality on Bluetooth.

I've arrived at the same conclusion unfortunately. The settings don't do much. And it's kinda frustrating because I've rented a few cars this year, and I've had a problem like this will all of them (a Kia Soul, a Ford Focus, and a Hyundai Sonata) and all of them had the same problem.
Thankfully Android Auto fixes these issues. If it's a short trip I just deal with the crappy audio, but I'll keep trying.

Hmm it's good to know that it's nothing specific to our cars (Honda Civic) but to our phones. I also use Android Auto whenever possible, but end up dealing with the bad audio quality fro short trips.

Ticwatch S&E - what is your opinion & More information

Hi guys,
The Ticwatch S&E powered by Android Wear 2.0 will be releasing soon.
What do you guys think of these new watches?
Link to the Kickstarter page: http://kck.st/2h2OqGj
Personally I have good faith in the watch because it is produced by a company that has been founded by ex-Googlers and has been supported by Google.
Pro's:
- OLED Display.
- Cheap.
- With the E model you can swap the watch band.
Cons:
- No NFC.
- Plastic instead of metal..
- With the S model you can't swap the watch band

S&E model will use Android wear 2.0 instead of ticwear OS.
For Android user is better than iOS user.
Hi there, i will not buy this watch, because of having the ticwatch 2 onyx black since 1 year. It is running without problems and I use it every day. Iam happy with it. The only advantage of the new one is Andoidwear2, but not more. I hope they will port it on my ticwatch 2 Have a nice day...
Mtk is a killer for many. It is a deal breaker.
Kinda sad how no one is able to top the original Huawei Watch. It came out in September 2015!
I've first backed for the TicWatch S on Kickstarter but witthdrawn my pledge as IP67 is really not enough for me, I was really excited about the TiWact S when first heard of it, but the lack of a proper Water Proofing (not water resist) made go for the Nixon MIssion, of course it's a far more expensive watch but it also is tougher.

i think the lg u2 tops all. and its also from 2015 (ok last rev. 2016)
I just received the Ticwatch E, I backed it on Kickstarter. Honestly, I just wanted to be able to change watch faces whenever I felt like it and it was only $99.00. If you have questions I'll try to answer them.
I just got mine and I love it a ton. It's exactly what I want, which is notifications on my wrist, and Google Assistant in my wrist. I'm already missing a lot less notifications. It's also charging quite fast! Two hours for a full charge at most.
I got mine delivered yesterday (S Model). So far I like it! I have a Moto 360 Gen2 so it's not a huge upgrade but it's more responsive and yes it seems to charge really fast.

Hi I have also just received them and I found them to perfectly fit my needs.
I have one question however hoping to find positive answer. As you might know, there is NFC chip on the watch as well, however is disabled thanks to some Android Wear security rules. Do you think there will be a way how to enable the NFC chip?
Having working NFC on the watch would be really nice bonus.
Ticwatch S impressions
I got my Ticwatch S on Thursday last week and I am mostly disappointed with the watch. My main complaints are:
1. The wakeup gesture doesn't work reliably. Most of the time it doesn't detect my wrist gesture and stays dark. Sometimes it needs around a second to detect it and to lit up.
2. The battery life is horrible. It hardly lasts more than a day, sometimes even less.
3. The OK Google command is not working very well. You need either to talk very close to the microphone or try couple of times to make it working. In general I think this is a problem of the microphone, because it doesn't work reliably in other applications as well
4. The watch is not very legible exposed to direct sunlight and it lacks automatic brightness which makes it extra bright during the night and not very bright during the day.
5. There is a rainbow effect around the screen edges, which is a bit annoying
6. I think also that the watch is a bit bulky and a bit on the heavy side, also the strap is made of rubber so your wrist sweats a lot during exercises.
And last but not least the Ticwatch forum is complete garbage. I tried to post two threads regarding my initial impressions and a question about how to switch from Fahrenheit to Celsius in the forum and they never showed up there, which means that the admins didn't approve them! So my advice is not to buy any Mobvoi product!

I just received the Ticwatch E, I backed it on Kickstarter. Honestly, I just wanted to be able to change watch faces whenever I felt like it and it was only $99.00. If you have questions I'll try to answer them.

Have you been able to find and use the E-compass supposed to be built in the watch??
I can't find any compass app in the watch and any I've installed from Play don't work (either with location turned off or on). GPS works well, but compass seems dead or absent?

Hi I have also just received them and I found them to perfectly fit my needs.
I have one question however hoping to find positive answer. As you might know, there is NFC chip on the watch as well, however is disabled thanks to some Android Wear security rules. Do you think there will be a way how to enable the NFC chip?
Having working NFC on the watch would be really nice bonus.

Hi, don't know your source of information, but to the best of my knowledge Ticwatch S & E use a Mediatek CPU that has no NFC and there is no other NFC built into the watch.
I'll be overjoyed to be proved wrong of course!!

2. The battery life is horrible. It hardly lasts more than a day, sometimes even less.

^this!!! I also have the S model.
I am truly much more satisfied with my two year old Fossil Q Founder 1st Generation. There is also a lot of trouble with Google Fit. The values are all over the place. I sent several tickets to the support and haven't received any answers, just a note that the message has been received.
So far a bad expereince. And I thought OnePLus has terrible customer service...

What really drives me crazy about this Ticwatch is that my two threads didn't even appear in their forum. I got a message that they have to be approved by the admin beforehand and then disappeared. I guess they are even censoring their own forum. After couple of days of use with the watch I can report that the battery is lasting not more than 24 hours with very little usage. This is far from the advertised 2 full days. Usually if I track an exercise I need to re-charge it more often.
It would be interesting if someone would find a way to gain root access on this smartwatch. I can confirm that there is NFC and that it is not enabled because the processor doesn't support android pay, but in Chinese version NFC is enabled.
I was a super early bird backer of the S model on the Kickstarter campaign. So far my experiences seem atypical:
1. Got my tracking number and received my watch with no real issues.
2. Battery life for me seems pretty good. As I'm writing this, I am at 30hrs of use with 25% charge left. I have both bluetooth and wifi on, display set at 4 (is that 75%?) , OK Google detection is ON, Always on display is OFF.
3. Wake up gesture is ok, not as laggy as what I have read from others. I'd say it wakes about 90% pf the time.
4. Google Assistant detection only seems to work when screen is on, but i think that is how its supposed to be right? It recognizes the OK Google prompt, pretty well for me, however, I have been told by many many people that I am a loud talker.
Overall, I'm digging it, and am pretty happy with what I got from a $119 investment.
