Android P - Sony Xperia X Compact Questions & Answers

Do you guys think that the xperia x compact will get the update to Android P?

No. Z5 compact didn't get oreo, so X compact will not get P. Maybe we will get 8.1.

Probaly yes. Sony’s official Android upgrade policy, it that premium devices are supported for two years after the device has launched. X compact will complete two years in the end of this year, so probaly yes!

And how can you explain that Z5C, released in late Sept. 2015, didn't get oreo, released in Aug. 2017? Support means security updates and not new Android versions.

I don't understand. X compact already has oreo 8.0. Maybe it will get 8.1., but not P (9.x).

Well, first of all, Sony did not have a clear policy of commitment to update the software for a certain period, and decided to adopt two years, endorsing the line of updates made by Google.
In addition, Sandar Pichai, CEO's Google, during Pixel 2's presentation on October 4 last year, has ensured that it will take the necessary steps for manufacturers to make updates for the same period, encouraging frequent updates to the Android system, which is largely not the case yet.
About Z5 and the Z5 compact, I can not say specifically. For example, the Z3 compact did not receive the Android Nougat because of a technical issue related to some unforeseen limitations of the platform that did not allow updating. These include the need for updated devices to have graphics that support Vulkan and OpenGL ES 3.1. Thus, devices running Adreno 3XX graphics - present on Snapdragon 800 and Snapdragon 801 - can not be upgraded, since processors only support OpenGL ES 3.0. As I said earlier, Google has committed to ensure that these contingencies will be reduced within two years period. Thus, it is likely, however, not certain that Sony will be authorized to upgrade its devices to Android P, and following the internal policy of the company to carry out the updates.
So, let's hope

OK, you are obviously better informed than me. So let's see...

also it's worth mentioning that Sony was not very kind to z5 series in terms of upgrading and X series were much better, however let's not forget that X compact has the same processor as the X so it's either they update both these phones to P or they update neither of them because X was released 6 months before Xc (if Im not mistaken) so the support would be over soon if not already...

They did update the Xperia Z to lollipop 5.1, almost 2 and a half years after it was launched, so maybe the X will get Android P as well; then again, 5.1 wasn't a huge update from 5.0, so, the probability is quite low that either the X Compact or the X will get the update.
Let's hope there won't be a performance dip if we do get the update tho.

I don't think so.
I can't be sure, it's more a sensation.
Maybe we'll get 8.1.
Or worse, left to "patched" 8.0.

I kinda doubt this. android 4.4 should be announced by google later this months, then it is highly unlikely that sony would be able to release it for the Z1 on the 7th of November. But I really wish they can, I even wish they skip 4.3 and focus on 4.4, if we can get it before the end of this year then hell yeah

I know that this is the case, but this has been the case so long ago (not with android 4.4), yet manufacturers take months before releasing the updates. 4.3 rolled out months ago but you could barely find phones already have 4.3 (apart from note 3 and HTC one) even the SGS4 which used to get updates before anyone else didn't get it yet UNLESS manufacturers already decided to skip 4.3 and focused to get 4.4 faster.
Again I really wish that Sony release 4.4 in November or even earlier (I am not against that, I have the Z1 myself) but as I said before it is highly unlikely.

what you say is true but I guess the chasing pack (HTC, LG, Sony) are maybe just realizing the importance of timely updates (that probably was a factor in Samsung's ascendance. HTC lost the android crown because it just lost lots of loyal customers who never saw any updates). Since Hardware is more or less commoditized already, the turf wars are gonna be fought on Software front. Faster updates could be USP and Sony might want to claim bragging rights (porting might be easier/faster for Sony as they are almost stock anyway!

I totally agree with you. Sony said they will release faster updates. Sony has advantage here because of the light skin but this is not the only thing, actually it is the least time consuming thing because it doesn't need much optimization and testing, at the end it is mostly an app that you can install to change how the phone look. The problem is to get it to work along with all the features with THIS SPECIFIC DEVICE, they need to test how the software would perform in THIS hardware (mainly chipset and screen and other things). And here is the bigger advantage of the Z1 as it uses the same chip and screen resolution as the nexus 5 (according to rumors), this will definitely help sony to release the new android versions much faster to the Z1 as it will already be optimized and tested. but again I doubt they will release it two weeks after the release of the 4.4 to the nexus devices but I still hope they will.

They don't list any sources either, as far as I am concerned neither "presumption" is correct, OEM's get new android versions months before there even announced so Sony may very well be cooking up Kitkat ready for November.
I don't believe it, if anything I'd expect a 4.3 release in November and a 4.4 in early 2014 hopefully.

Highly unlikely.. But if it happened to be the case, Sony deserves a lot of credit. In my opinion they receive too little credit for their contributions to AOSP. But that's another matter

This is getting old, but anyway here it is again...
Just look at Sony´s smartphone and firmware history m8´s, and you will see that this is never going to happen...
- we are lucky to recive 4.3 in late Q1 or perhaps Q2 of 2014, and after that the Z1 will be abandoned...
IF the rumor really WAS true, Sony would have turned 180 degrees in their business strategy... (and that is not likely, is it now ??)
Becource sony has actually acted that way for years now, at least since Xperia X10...
Sony is in this marked for the money, nothing else...
That is also why the Z1 was shipped with 4.2.2, and NOT 4.3 from the beginning...
- this way Sony can meet Googles demands on major updates, without actually giving YOU anything new...
Just think for 2 sec, about this:
WHY would Sony release a new flagship like the Z1 with only 4.2.2, when it would be just as mutch work for them to release it with the current 4.3 ??
This is also not new for Sony, the X10 was shipped with 1.6...
Sony is NOT stupid, the history repeats it self over and over, and we buy the products anyway...
BTW other Sony "feature" is these:
DON`T be suppriced to find that the Z and other phones is going to get the 4.3 before the Z1, that is actually also normal sony behavior.
DON´T be suppriced if you at last, one day finally will get 4.4 anyway (Q4 2014), that there will be features missing in the new version, that also is normal sony behavior.
The rumours come from a pretty unreliable source, so I'm not basing any of my analysis on that. Rather based on how close Sonys UI is to AOSP, porting it to 4.3 or 4.4 seems more trivial than it would for HTC or Samsung, considering their much larger deviations from AOSP. But ultimately only time will tell.

Because they've been working on the Z1 for longer than 4.3 has been available and wanted to beat the other manufacturers to market with an S800 phone (note that the LG G2 also shipped with 4.2.2 and is the only other phone with an S800 CPU), there literally is no other plausible explanation, stop being such a downer man. Ultimately 4.2.2/4.3/4.4 doesn't make any difference at all to the average consumer, and in fact, Sony might actually provide a better user experience by sticking to 4.2.2 until the bugs have been ironed out of the new major versions.
They will likely have had a team working on porting their UI to 4.3/4.4 while developing the Xperia Z1, they are just not ready yet.
Maybe you guys dont use to Sony?
Just relax and don't put high hope on update.....(xperia S and TX owner here waiting Z1)

THIS IS FUNNY !
This is actually allmost exactly what S/E responded back in the X10 days, when people was on 1.6, waiting allmost a year for 2.1...
- are you shure you dont Work for them ??
4.3 would give new features, and equally importent, it would let Sony be in the android lead for once, but then they have to give you, at least, also 4.4, and Sony don´t want to do that...
- it is better for Sony´s economy, if we all buy a new phone in a year instead...
But DON`T belive me, PLEACE DONT !
Just read the Sony and S/E history instead, and form your oppinion from that...

LOL such a doubter... and it is surprised not suppriced ...
ok let us take a look at Sony's Firmware history:
1. Xperia S(March 2012) launched with GB installed, they released ICS (4.0.4) update around may-june 2012 as promised, then release jellyean 1 year later (may-june 2013)... They actually have released a leaked version earlier at around April 2013 (build .200) so developers can start developing with the jellybean firmware... that is very timely... as expected, they will stop here as Qualcom has stopped supporting the chipset installed in Xperia S... no surprise there.
2. Xperia Z(February 2013) was released with Jelly bean 4.1.2... and then released 4.2.2 mid this year... they also promised 4.3 upgrade around Dec or January...
now lets take a look at Google's release cycle:
ICS 4.0.4 is release on 29 March 2012
JB 4.1.2 is released Oct 2012
JB 4.2.2 is only released Feb 2013
As you can see, Sony has an orderly version release cycle... and they always deliver on their promises... and as you can see after Sony releases a new product, they upgrade it to the latest version 3-4 months later... they are also known to skip versions... (they skipped ICS 4.0.3 and went to 4.0.4)
how much you wanna bet they will release 4.4 on or before Q1 2014?

Android 5.0 L for Z3

Greeting, if anyone knows when it will be available to Android 5.0 for Xperia Z3?
Something was discussed, it should come this year or next (Q1/2015)... It would be good if Sony starts thinking forward about the new android L...
Or we'll get a new update on Z3, while out new Z4..

So it means sony have just one and half month to bring it to Z3 if they want to realease it for Z3 series, and you say its slow?

HTC One (M8) - Android 5.0 Lollipop update in 90 days
HTC One mini - Android 5.0 Lollipop update, schedule TBA

Chance for better 3rd party camera apps?
Since several of the features in 5.0 look quite interesting for photography purposes, any guesses if these could be used for better 3rd party camera apps?
As seen on http://www.android.com/versions/lollipop-5-0/ :
A range of new professional photography features for Android Lollipop that let you
Capture full resolution frames around 30 fps
Support raw formats like YUV and Bayer RAW
Control capture settings for the sensor, lens, and flash per individual frame
Capture metadata like noise models and optical information

Sony states 5.0 will be released beginning of 2015. So assuming its end of Jan or early Feb then it is 3 months from the release of 5.0 to nexus devices. This could be the time frame for all the other OEM's except motorola which might release it in december. I would call that fast. I knew this before buying the device so i am not really bothered about it.

So will there be any changes for an update for Z3 to Lollipop? When I had a Samsung/HTC update to 4.0, there weren't any major changes. Will the Z3 be able to run ART with even better battery saving capabilities? Anyone know what features might be added? Im interested to know if there will be any major changes, or if I should just wait for a Z4/Nexus 6 that will have the latest features instead of getting a slimmed down update.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Ah, yes, but because of the frequency of new models being released, it's easy to forget that the Z and Tablet Z actually only came out about 18 months ago - so are pretty much within the '18 month' window of getting supported.
I actually don't want Android 5 / L before it has stabilized. KitKat needed 5 iterations to settle (remember all the connectivity issues up and including 4.4.3?!).
Hence, completly agree with zoomee, let Nexus users do some testing and Google do some fixes first
Meanwhile, the Z2 STILL doesn't have 4.4.4

The reasons are both technical and legal. If you followed the N Developer Preview program you know that we didn't release the final DP5. That program ran into some unforeseen limitations (1) that could not be resolved.
This is the reason that both concept and official won't be upgraded to Android N (2).

must sux for the sony devs. looks like they tried to pull it off but execs came and said no.
Please read again the link, it says and i quote,
"We’ve been working hard to bring this major update to as many of our devices as possible, as quickly as we can. We’re really excited about the new Sony features & functionality and the improvements we’ve made to the user experience – and we’ll be sharing more soon… so stay tuned to the blog and @SonyMobileNews for all the latest news on timings and features."

Seems that Google removed the support for Snapdragon 800/801 from the Kernel, that's what they call unforeseen limitations (the Nexus 5, Snapdragon 800 don't get the update either).
Such an unpopular decision for a very popular device, like z3(c).

Can someone please pin these in the main post?
Maybe its because of chipset is X86

Well.... Z3 and Z3 Compact doesn't use any X86 chipset, it uses a arm-based chipset (Snapdragon 801 namely), and the reason Sony can't bring the upgrade to the Z3 and Z3 Compact is becuase Google removed support for the Snapdragon 801.

Do you think Z5 will get Android 8?

i saw at the beta android O got cool improvement
if not 8 i hope will get at least lastest version 7.1.2
No, I don't think so..
I am absolutely sure we will get android o.

Absolutely not. The best you could hope for is 7.1.1 or 7.1.2.
no. probably android 7.1 android 8
never
No, sony is just retarded.
the best news will be Z5 WONT get Android 8.
Z5 with 3gb ram, the best build so far has been Android 6 - 32.2.A.5.11 , it was the last build on Android 6.
ever since on android 7, the device overheats and battery life is a bit shorter and ram usage is high.
YES i agree sony has ditched Z5 poorly after announcing that Z project has been discontinued and z5 was never properly distributed or marketed (atleast not in my country)
the same goes for the upcoming builds where they are focusing more on X series and when in Jan2017 X got android 7, z5 also prompted for an update to 7.
I will be downgrading my z5 to 32.2.A.5.11 and will keep it there for good!
It would be nice, let see what demands will it have
I too tried nougat, no go without xposed, sticking with rock solid marshmallow
Yes - there's a very active development community - OP never stated from $ony
Z2,Z3--> 6.0.1
Z3+,Z5-->7.1.1/7.1.2
Sony makes devices as pair...
You guys know that nougat was planned for z3, and it even had developer preview build, but google or qualcomm messed up with some drivers or requirements, so all snapdragon 801 devices didnt get nougat update.

Official Android O? Sony tried to update the Z3 to Nougat (it would have gone 4.4 -> 7.0) and were only stopped by Qualcomm/Google/driver issues. No reason for the Z5 to not get 8.0
may be 8.0 requires Vulcan which z5 lacks ??????????????????

*Vulkan
I think we won't get O as our update support ends soon, the 2 years of update support is soon on EOL and I'm sure Sony is waiting for that so they don't have to update anymore.
Well I have an Z5 Premium but the whole kitakami series (Z3+ to Z5) gets nearly same updates.
I would be happy if Sony wouldn't mess up FWs like they did with Nougat but well I'm sure they did that because This series should die to replace it with the messy X series.
So don't expect too much guys. You also don't need to expect so much that we get 7.1.2
When XZ1 and so on are released we also can say goodbye to our devices finally because Sony will dead patch them like they did with Z3 (look battery life between 5.1.1 and 6.0.1)
So my hope goes to OnePlus 5 for now
Your PDesire
I just bought this device a week ago. I'm not worried about not getting Android O. But rather worried about not getting a stable version of Nougat.

No Android 8 Oreo for our Z4 tablets

In case someone has missed it, the Z4 Tablet is not on Sonys list with devices that will get the update. Since it is Sonys last tablet and still one of the best Android tablet I think it would have made sense to keep it updated.
It runs okay with stock 7.1.1 but some of the Oreo updates would be nice to have, like improved multi window support and picture-in-picture.
I guess there will be some custom ROMs to try out, but in this case I actually like Sonys UI better, with the keyboard support (shortcuts and start menu etc.).

This is the latest tablet in Sony portfolio.
No Oreo = I will never again buy Sony device.
Howgh.
Without sources It's hard to make custom oreo rom. But it definately possible as it is with xiaomi redmi note 2, for example.
Since z5 itself it not getting oreo then it was obvious the tablet as well. If sony do as always then we will have AOSP release from them for this tablet and z5
Very disappointed ?

From what I understand there will be no BSP for Oreo on the 810 processor based SOC. It's tough to blame Sony for this one, IMHO this lands on Qualcomm.
No. It's Sony responsibility to push Quallcomm.
Most sony devices use mediatek now so probably Qualcomm no longer is a good partner for Sony

There are phones with 810 SOC that has gotten Oreo already so that is false.

Nexus 6P and maybe others.
Any other examples?
I'm not sure which kernel is running on 6p on oreo, but on my nexus 5x (oreo 8.1) it's 3.10. This is a violation of google policy that for oreo kernel must be at least 4.4.
So i would suspect that 6p is an exception confirming the rule.

That's not really correct, according to Google's kernel version requirements:
- All SoCs productized in 2017 must launch with kernel 4.4 or newer.
- All other SoCs launching new Android devices running Android 8.0 must use kernel 3.18 or newer.
- Regardless of launch date, all SoCs with device launches on Android 8.0 remain subject to kernel changes required to enable Treble.
-Older Android devices released prior to Android 8.0 but that will be upgraded to Android 8.0 can continue to use their original base kernel version if desired.
Source: https://source.android.com/devices/architecture/kernel/modular-kernels#core-kernel-requirements
I think even the Pixel / Pixel XL is running Oreo on 3.18 kernels.
Its like when the snap 801 devices didnt get nougat all over again. Google are good at killing worthy devices. All 801 devices were perfectly fine and capable of running nougat but it was never offically supported. Its also like the Sony SmartWatch 3 how they killed that with no AW 2.0 update. It has nfc which can be used for Android pay but is now useless without AW 2.0. Also the SmartWatch 3 has WiFi and alot of other things some android wear 2.0 devices dont have. Google just keep killing our devices with less updates to make us buy new ones.

Why do you keep blaming Google for this? Google did update their own devices with the same chipset as Sony Tablet Z4 (Nexus 6P) or lower spec (Nexus 5X) to Oreo.
The Nexus and even Pixels runs 3.x kernels too so Google is not stopping Sony from updating the Z3+/Z4/Z5-series to Oreo!
Regarding the SmartWatch 3, again why blame Google for this? It has the Snapdragon 400 chipset which is compatible with Wear 2.0 (LG updated their G-watches with SD400 to Wear 2.0).
Instead it was Sony that stated something like "SwartWatch 3 runs better with it's current version of Wear". The same BS excuse that Sony and other OEMs often use when they abandon fully capable products.
Google can't force OEMs to update their devices, the just give them the tools to do it. Which in these cases Sony don't want to use.
According to xperiablog, SONY just sold 18300 Z4 Tablets. I am pretty sure the customer wants to use a current OS with security patches.

According to the article they will run a (modified) stock version of Android. The demo unit in the photo seems to be running Jelly Bean or KitKat!
