Regarding MyXperia and unlocked bootloader - Sony Xperia X Guides, News, & Discussion

Hi everyone.
I'm preparing to have my phone rooted. While the process doesn't seem intimidating (I've had an Xperia rooted some years ago), what disturbs me is a kill switch hidden by Sony software devs - MyXperia Theft Protection.
Basically, if you accidentally enable MyXperia on a device with unlocked BL, it will hard brick your device without warning. This has been stated in Sony's UBL site, and i've seen some case of devices getting bricked due to this - Mostly M4 Aqua's. So here I have 2 questions:
- Is this also a case for our device, and has there been anyone bricked/recovered from this issue?
- Is there any way to hide that option from the Settings menu? Since with that thing around it's too easy for someone with malicious intent to brick another guy's rooted phone.
I'm looking forward to your answers. Thanks for reading.
EDIT: Just found out that Sony has discontinued MyXperia and replaced it with Google's Find my Device, but they seem to forgot to remove the kill switch in their devices. Great job, Sony.

with all due respect
you research should have been more on pampering DRM KEYS rather than damage control/theft protection app (my xperia / find my device)
the Real devil in the details is saving TA.IMG. which is only possible in few lucky handsets and X is one of them!
this is what happens once you boot unlock! (drm keys lost)

I know about the DRM keys and how to back it up.
The thing that worries me though, is that after unlocking there's a "self-destruct" button in my Settings menu. I couldn't care less about security/device protection, but someone with malicious intent or a drunk me at 3am can easily destroy my phone within a few taps is a big concern.

Step 12: BE CAREFUL and, from now on, DON’T ENABLE the MyXperia. It could hard brick your phone.

Even on unlocked bootloader?
That is a strange thing to hear. Most of the bricked cases i've heard are from M4 Aqua's. Maybe the guy in that XZ thread was being cautious.

I just found out that freezing the MXP app using Titanium removes the option from Settings menu.

Cracked Screen - Need to relock bootloader for RMA!

Help!
My Nexus 7 screen randomly cracked (no touch input) and I have to send it back to Asus for RMA, I have managed to use Wug's Toolkit to flash stock and unroot, but when I try to re-lock the bootloader with the tool a message pops up on the Nexus 7 screen asking me to allow the connection, but I can't because if I take out the USB cable to put in my OTG mouse, the message goes away!
I've tried Airdroid but that doesn't work, please help otherwise Asus will say my warranty is voided :crying: :crying:
Thank you

Mine cracked for no reason too!!
did you have screen lifting problems maybe?
What does RMA stand for? Can you get a new one for this?
And looks like we have the same problem...maybe try with a usb extender? Or bluetooth mouse
RMA is just the returns procedure, but the guy on the phone said I have a chance of getting it repaired through warranty if it's a screen defect (which it is, i have never damaged it!).
I don't have a bluetooth mouse
What exactly is the difficulty with putting the tablet into bootloader mode and using a single fastboot command to relock the bootloader? You don't need a mouse or even a working screen to do that.
If you installed a toolkit on your PC, then you also have fastboot installed too - the toolkit is mostly just a wrapper around the fastboot (and adb) program(s).
Probably you can simply just repeat what you tried with the toolkit but starting with the tablet in bootloader mode. (But don't quote me on that, I don't use toolkits).
BTW, it is not the *current* condition of the bootloader lock state that determines the validity of your warranty - if you unlocked the boot loader at any time in the past, your warranty is voided.

Im not too sure about that...
I talked to my local htc service and they say that they dont care what was done before it, they just want it in the condition in which they sold it to me.

I get that. It makes no business sense for Asus to go all CSI on every tablet that comes in the door for repair, although I'm pretty sure they could tell quite easily whether a tablet has been previously unlocked if they actually wanted to. (No matter what state it is in when they receive it).
My point was about the T&C's (legal terms) that owners agree to in the click-through dialogs when they unlock their tablet. What folks "get away with" is a separate issue.
I'm pretty sure that XDA's policy is to encourage people to act in a stand-up fashion. Agreeing to terms and then later doubling back on them reflects poor character.
Unlocking or re-locking the bootloader doesn't involve the touch screen at all... everything is done with the buttons on the right hand side of the Nexus 7.
(Re-locking doesn't even require the buttons- just fastboot oem lock).
It's also debatable whether unlocking the bootloader actually violates warranty... see the screenshot attached (from my last N7 OEM unlock).
- note the use of the phrase...
may void warranty
'May' is a highly subjective word, that covers a whole multitude of sins.
Rgrds,
Ged.
Well, I suppose to avoid any shed tears I should have just pointed out that the information the OP sought - and now answered - can be posed in a way that completely avoids making XDA look like a place that encourages questionable behavior, or that people that offer technical assistance are complicit in those behaviors.
For instance:
"Hi! My Nexus 7 has a cracked screen so I am unable to use the touchscreen. I would like to lock the bootloader. (insert part about toolkit) How do I go about doing this?"
Note the complete lack of mention of warranty or RMA - it is completely irrelevant to the technical part of the discussion anyway & keeps XDA's nose clean.
cheers
Sorry buddy, I didn't mean any offence or to tarnish XDA's reputation - I love this place!
Ged - With regards to the command. I have always used toolkits (newb!) so didn't know how to execute a command whilst it was in fastboot mode, but I've just figured that our and it worked! Thank you very much mate

You are most welcome...
Fastboot (and adb) is the easiest way of doing these sorts of things, rather than using a toolkit - although fastboot isn't currently an option for me, as I've relocked my bootloader and am running my device rooted (by exploit) and a custom ROM flashed via TWRP, which I flashed via the 'dd' command in Terminal Emulator. Thanks to bftb0 for info on how to do that... I was astonished when it worked. You can tell I'm still learning stuff here.
--------
Apologies from me as well, bftb0, regarding 'questionable behavior' and those 'complicit in those behaviors'... it's a fair point well made. XDA is too good and valuable a place to have it's reputation sullied by posts which encroach into areas of dubious legality, so I will confine my future posts to technical matters only... insofar as my current level of knowledge allows.
Rgrds,
Ged.
Did you get it repaired?
My service sent mine to the Czech republic, where they sent me a bill of 218€
Luckily it was just a sample, so the didn't do nothing.
I called the service, and they said that they will not repair the device with warranty and that I have to pay..
By the way im from Slovenia, and had some bad experiences with the htc service, so it's just probably here.
They sent the device back home... so now Im stuck -.-
So u no gonna tell i you got it repaired?

Kind of disappointed...

Well I unlocked my bootloader without reading more into it and I guess I lost my DRM keys. I really should have read more. I thought I knew what I was doing but I didn't. Anyways, so now I can't play my PS4 on the remote play. I also can't sign into PS4 app. I'm sure it's not working because the DRM keys are missing. Sony really has this phone locked tight. Anyways I'm sad, yeah it's my screw up but really sony? Do we need DRM keys on a phone?
Ill probably never buy another sony phone again. I really only bought this phone for remote play and now I can't use it lol. Stupid

Someone from not XDA perhaps
Or perhaps someone looking for a device and NOT a device w/ warrenty
Don't lose hope
I had unlocked my bootloader as well. I did it to root the device before it was discovered you could root without unlocking it.
However, I recently used FlashTools to relock the bootloader and flashed new firmware.
All the features that were locked are now back, the playstation apps work, the hi-res facebook pics and a few others are all functioning again.
So try flashtools to relock it, if that doesn't bring back the features, reflashing to stock should help.
You relocked bootloader with no TA backup and it worked?

Yeah it worked. I used the Flashtool and I set phone in flash mode. Hit the relock button and it worked successfully. Then I ran the Sony Pc component and flashed 4.4.4. When I was unlocked it kept failing. Why?

Each device has its own individual DRM keys. I doubt you could use another devices keys.

No playstation app does NOT work. Neither does remote play. Once you unlocked the bootloader before backing up DRM keys it will probably never work unless some super dev creates some wizard hackery and it bypasses the key check idk.
sell it! if its in good condition and you sell it a bit cheaper Im sure a lot of people wont care that they cant use remote play , for instance I dont lol

So I guess Sony PC Companion was one of the things that fail... It works now but the other problems remain still. I see.
Also it's important to mention that if you have a locked bootloader with DRM keys, and the Remote Play App keeps giving a error message, it's probably because you have installed "Super SU". I uninstalled the app, and Remote Play works for now.
If you are not sure about your DRM keys, just type *#*#7378423#*#* on your phone and go to Service Test > Security, if you have [Unknown Error] instead of [Key OK] they are lost, to restore them the only way is to use Backup of your TA. If you have all [Key OK] then your phone is ok.

Start Up Android Password - Encryption Option is Missing?

Hi there
I have been looking for a replacement for my Moto X Pure (because I am idiot and lost it). I liked the specs and the price of the Axon7 (having an support for an external SSD won me over vrs One Plus). Anyways I should have checked here first as there is a serious limitation for my use case. I use my phone for my work. Due to the way the work policies were setup we have to enable the password for Android start up. And as some of us have found out the hard ware that option is NOT supported with the current OS on the phone. From what I have read the phone is pre-encrypted so this option was removed.
My question (I know finally) was is there any way to get the start Android password working? I heard something about the un-locked boot loader but not sure if that is the ticket. I am not sure why the folks at ZTE removed that feature/option. Without getting this option re-enabled I have no choice but to send this phone back (take advantage of the 30 day money back guarantee) and look for something else... other than that I really like this phone! As always thank you XDA members!

Short Review of a Sony Z5 Compact Prototype

Hi guys,
I just want to share with you a short review I've made of a Z5 Compact Prototype. Since then I've installed Android Nougat and it works flawlessly (no low volume or any others bugs) other than it's still detected as a prototype so Send Usage Info is still ticked. Enjoy!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MouJ9jtQfpU
Sorry for reviving an old thread, but have to ask:
Did you wipe old and flash a new firmware and still the "Send usage info" is there? Shouldn't that disappear when flashing with a new one?
I'm curious since I've been offered to buy a demo/retail phone.
No worries, mate; yes, the "Send usage info" remains ticked even after a new flashing. As far as I know there's no way of turning it off.
Thanks for the info!
Wonder if it has any to do with IMEI nr...
Since I usually avoid sending any usage info I think I'll pass on the phone I was offered.
I don't think it has anything to do with the IMEI. Overall, it's not like it affects you in any way. Only this option is greyed out and cannot be disabled; other than that, the device is completely normal.
Allright, maybe I'll consider buying the phone anyway if I get a good price

Lol. Every' how to', including the Sony website tells you this is a one way process, can't believe you ignored all those warnings.
Having said that, there's no reason why you can't 'fix' it with Xperiafix, everything will be as before you unlocked it.
actually there IS a way to relock the Bootloader.
But the problem is that once you've unlocked it without having the DRM keys saved, relocking it back without using the DRM keys leads to multiple consequences:
1. You MAY BRICK your phone irreversibly.
2. You WILL NOT be able to use the camera
3. The built-in Video/Photo Ehnancer, as well as the Sony 4K enabler MAY NOT work anymore, and you'll, most likely, result in having a 4K panel in fHD-only mode.
4. You won't be able to use your phone for the Daydream VR anymore.
And what is all this for? For being able to install the updates? Lol forget about them.

What a load of bs, there is no method available to relock yet or it would be listed on XDA.
I presume this is still the case in regards to no method of locking the bootloader?

Can anyone help me. I have an xperia xz premium. Before, my device, had a problem which are can't detect for wifi and mobile internet. So, since it is still under warranty, i sent it to the partner office, which is not sony related company i think. The time take to fix the problem is 2 months. For the first time after the fix, i gone to pick up, and start the phone. It says that cannot check for software corruption, need to unlock the bootlader. And About 3 days after i pick up the phone, the phone begin to be crazy, some buttons such as volume and power button also fingerprint mounted to power button has no respond. Sometimes there are respond but not for long. But before the buttons has no respond, the device fell from my hand which is 0.5 meter i think. But i think, the problem is an unlocked bootloader.
What should i do?
Looking forward.

It's your fault.
Since you've dropped your devices, it is more likely that the fall killed your device.
But that bootloader issue must be the repairman's work.
Is it still the case that you can't relock the bootloader? I need to return this phone.
