Outdoor visibility is not good even on Max brightness
It's pretty poor indeed. Doubting to go for another phone because of the bad brightness.
For me is excelent!
I leave mine on auto brightness and have no issues using it outside

Maybe they have different panels? For me in sunny Germany it is often very hard to read the display of the sun is out.
for me is outdoor visibility in big sunny day (in europe) is without (real) problem, but is need say:
- only if is not glass full of fingerprints
- in hand is need little move phone to angle not in direct sun
- if on lcd is app with dark theme, then is of course less visibility that with light theme...

Its been pretty sunny here in the UK as well, i can see this screen better than my Honor 8 i had before ,

Lol, we have had and still having a lovely summer this year :laugh:
Screen Brightness is just a tad bit worse than my previous phone... (Alcatel Idol 3 5.5")
Thus barely visible in full brightness outside, unless you're in the shadows. Oh well... (3 Stars)
I'd agree that screen brightness isn't brilliant in strong sunlight compared to other phones and it's probably one of the worst aspects of the phone.
One thing that I have noticed is that if you have the adaptive light setting activated in settings then the phone never seems to be able to get more than about 80% brightness.
If you use an app such as YAAB instead of the standard setting then you can control the average brightness and increase the brightness and hit 100%.

Go to Settings>About
It should be before the build number.
In the minimum brightness thread, one guy said that if your panel is not Novatek, you're display is good.
If it is novatek you will have problems with max brightnes minimum brightness and the screen looks more yellowish

That is touch panel firmware version not the actual hardware LCD screen type, mine 07 goodix something the firmware version
And I don't have any yellow issues on my screen

Not even on sunny days, but when it's cloudy during the day and the sun is not directly visible, the brightness is not very good although it's serviceable. Several times I pull my phone out outside and at first think to turn up the brightness because it's difficult to see only to realize that it's on max brightness already.
For me I have no visibility problems with sunlight outside

With maximum visibility, with sunglasses i can read display on white pages with no problems.

For sure, my brightness never goes more than 3/4. Only if i have to read really important things, but usually it is at 30-35%
IPS LCD displays are very good outdoor performers
Do you guys take money or gift from Huawei? In all this real life threads there are the same guys talking about how great is this phone. That is not so great.

The displays sunlight legibility is great. The phone does not heat up during extensive use under direct sunlight.

not so good. if you are under direct sunlight then sometime contents are not visible but that too depends on the theme you are using sometime. some gives you very bright screen even under sunlight but some doesnt. (personal observation, may vary for others).

i think its below average but i put 3. feels a little darker than the nexus 6 i had since launch, which wasnt great.
It seems only a little brighter than my Pixel 2 XL. However, it is much more visible in sunlight and the colors are more vibrant outdoors. Compared to other flagship phones? I'd say it's not quite as bright as the Note 9 or Galaxy S9, but it seems plenty good enough in all conditions for my use, indoors and outdoors.
I find myself having to keep this on max brightness all the time, whereas on my old pixel xl I could get by on 50-75%. It is definitely dimmer than the pixel xl, ugh

It will give you extra brightness if you have a custom kernel.
Does this app help with the overall experience, and how does it affect battery life? I ask because I don't have a Pixel 3XL yet, and was very disappointed when I evaluated one yesterday at the Verizon store and turned brightness to less than 100%. Color accuracy is not a particular concern, but being able to see the screen is.
First time Pixel Owner here, I find the 3XL having slightly disappointing brightness. On my old phone which was the HTC 10 I set mine to around 45-50% on a regular basis and it was pretty bright, occasionally bumped to 70% while being outdoors. On a 3XL I had to set to 70% minimum in order to be able to watch videos comfortably, normally 90-Max outdoors.
Agree with others here, brightness isn't very good, we've finally had some sun here in the UK and when I'm outside it's very hard to see! I came from a Note 8 so it's going to be hard to see in the summer!

From there it gets dark quickly, typical setting for indoors is 70%.
Only in darkness can <50% be used.
The screen gets brighter with time.
Brightness sucks. I live in Tulsa (fairly sunny). If the sun is out without clouds the screen is virtually un-viewable if you aren't standing in a shaded area.
P3 screen brightness isn't great and the Samsung and OnePlus are somewhat better, but frankly none are fun to use to use in direct sun. Rather than squint I'm just going to move into the shade whenever possible, no matter what phone I have.

But in the end. The device is really good. Best in this price bracket.
screen is difficult to read outside, brightness is always set to max and its still too low even with indirect light. unreadable in direct sunlight.
It's okay for me in sunlight when set to auto(I never found any outdoor mode option so idk if enabled ) but with sunglasses it's too dark, usable to do something or maps but no for media consumption. I compared with xiaomi mi9 in shop and Asus is brighter(indoors) for me with better colors, but in sunlight screen have more reflections so it may appear darker I think.

Is this something that can be increased with a software update as being able to see the screen in sunlight is important? Thank you.
The outdoor visibility is the best from all of my previous devices so I am happy.

I am usually very fussy when it comes to sunlight legibility and I have had many phones, but this seems more than fine for normal usage outdoors. It's no iPhone but certainly not as bad as some reviewers make it out.

It's actually not very bright in direct sunlight. Was out on the back porch with it today, noticed it right away.

Outdoor screen performance is okish
The maximum brightness is great for indoors but okish outdoors cause under intense sunlight you might not be able to see the screen clearly. In normal sunlight the screen is not great but usable.
I was pretty worried about these negative comments about the brightness, living in Spain we see a lot of sun.
But I haven't noticed any problem to be honest. I noticed though that at some angles my sunglasses seem to act as a filter and all I can see is a black screen. The first time it happened I thought I'd put my finger over the light sensor, but when I looked over my sunglasses I realized what it was.
Do you have, perhaps, powersavings activated?
Look at: settings - Power saving Mode - reduce Screen brightness.
I usually use 50-70% brightness (without power saving enabled) and that works fine...

In India the sun is burning hot and it's very difficult even with power saving turned off

Factory problem.
Also disable screen optimization from battery sub menu helped in contrast.
Never get this phone if you are living in sunny areas.
