Speakerphone (loudness, clarity) - Sony Xperia XZ2 Real Life Review

Proper etiquette aside (hint: don't use speakerphone while doing your "business" in a public bathroom), rate this thread to express how you think the Sony Xperia XZ2's speakerphone performs. A higher rating indicates that you love it: it's loud and it's clear.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

Bought it today and bottom speaker is ubearable to listen at times, distorted sounds, as if it was blown or teared or something. I even tested menu: *#*#7378423#*#* (this is observation from 6 hours of the purchase).
I go way back with xperia long way back, and this is first time i experience this issue.
After couple of reboots and fuul charge through night and lots of speaker max. testing i get clear sound today, i can't explain it, i cant replicate distorted sound, maybe it was fault between updates. I am keeping it for now, will post if error reocurs.
Overall phone is a beast

Distortion came back for hour or two today, now again it is completly gone, bafled!!!
Aaaaa!!!
I am investigating if it is something to it, if not i bring it to exchange tomorrow (looks like they may be other phones suffering from speaker distortions, acording to claims due to equalizer??)
This are just guesses but until tomorrow i set my equalizer to default... Check this link:
https://www.google.si/amp/s/forum.x...-xl/help/speaker-distortion-fix-t3744177/amp/
Please annyone with this issues set equ. To default and report, thank you
And I have got a replacement with proper and unbroken seal now, all seems fine fingers crossed

I just received mine today, updated and imported all my accounts then noticed the terrible distortion from the bottom speaker! ? I factory reset it to prepare for an exchange and decided to try it again. Since the factory reset, it SEEMS fine in the tests. I don't know if I should go through the trouble of restoring my accounts and media and hope for the best or just exchange it.

My model before was 8266 dual sim Europe-Slovenia, now i got same model and works great ?

Just following up. The replacement I got also had the speaker issue. I ended up just returning it and ordering from another place. I received this third one a few days ago and it is PERFECT. The sound is louder and much clearer than the previous two; I'm loving it! ^_^ One thing I did notice, the first two said "Rev 1" on the box and this new one is "Rev 2".

Mine says Rev 3 and yes, it sounds really loud but I can't compare it to other XZ2 models because I only have one.

I have a distorted sound on 2 speakers. And I also figured out how to fix it with the sim card tray

How?

Question about the speaker at the bottom. Is it suppose to be a bit lower in volume than the top speaker? Mine is a bit lower, but I can't find any information on it.

For me, the speakers is 3.5/5.
Pros: Front facing true stereo (left and right channels)
Cons: Sounds thin and lacking bass. Max volume is really average, can't compete with the likes of Samsung S9 and HTC U12. Even the OnePlus 5T single firing speaker was louder. Not sure about you guys, the S-force surround toggle doesn't make any difference to me at all.

[Q] 1 or 2 speakers?

I'm confused. I thought I heard stereo sound when I first got it, now it sounds like it's more from the right side. I'm on the phone with Asus now. The guy thinks I only have one speaker. I'm looking on both ends and see little holes on both sides. Can someone confirm if this has stereo speakers or a mono speaker?
this is a known issue.
many having the same issue where sound louder on one side.
edit: and there are two speakers
I plugged it into my car and the right speakers were louder then my left .. weird

same here... but I emailed EVERY name I could find on the net of people at the US HQ and a tech actually called me(not one from the call center) and was VERY helpful. I too have the right side speaker louder than the left. Many thought it was a software issue but the tech said none of the ones in the office were doing that and were even(he checked after he saw my email) and were running the same FW. He believes it's a HW issue, like maybe there was a batch that was affected, or maybe it was the first batch (he confirmed my dock was from the first batch) So he is going to use my unit to figure out what the problem is and hopefully then they will be able to resolve everyone's that's having an issue. My replacement will be here tomorrow and I ship out the one with the lower left volume to him so hopefully we find out officially what is causing this.
Trust me the call center is useless!! They said the same thing to me about it running windows 7. After my email the tech at HQ said they have been discussing it a lot and are going to work to get the call center up to speed and know the product off the top of their heads(the call center is in Jamaica btw)

You mean the right speakers of your car were louder? That would indicate that it is a sw problem instead of a hw problem as graffixnyc suggested.
I knew it wasn't one speaker. I've had the unit for 2 weeks and all of a sudden I only hear from one side. Not that the left side is a little weaker, but none from the left side at all. I'm going to go ahead and do the RMA. Either it's cheap hardware with the speakers (the Transformers is a cheap $$$ you know compared to the other tablets) or I blew out the speaker. It was working fine for two weeks where the audio was centralized without any issues. The last thing I remembered doing before this happened was clearing out the Market cache. I doubt that would've caused this.

Let us know how this goes - I've got the same issue.
I'm hoping it's software, as they can just send out a patch. I'd rather not RMA the unit, but if they determine it's a hardware issue, I'll contact them and get mine swapped out.
Ok. I loaded up some stereo tests from youtube and the left speaker is dead. Try this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8ODm-F9-IM I think this is a hardware issue and not a firmware issue.
My left speaker isn't dead, just less loud. All I need is a balance control. Hmmm, somewhere I have a sound dB meter, have to dig that out and measure the relative outputs.
I had the same issue with left speaker dead. first it was crackling/popping/distorted then dead. Asus gave me a DOA code to give to the retailer for a new one. New one has no speaker issues but does have light bleed which I can live with.
The joys of being cutting edge in tech.
I'm not sure what to do now. Should I get a refund from Amazon and purchase another one or send this one in to Asus?
I just tested mine; received around may 2nd from amazon (ordered on the 26). Speakers seem fine; definitely has right/left and volume is not hugely different. I'm still on the .6 firmware since the .9 is not available ota.
I got my Transformer yesterday, I've just tested the sound and the right speaker is louder than the left. I'm on the latest firmware.
Edit: Do people using different rom's also have the speaker issues?

Actually a pretty good test. Left seems to be working but definitely less volume and body then right...
Awesome. Definately working, seems quieter, but not by as much as I'd have thought...
Just a note guys, I thought my left speaker was dead and tried the speaker test on youtube. At first it sounded like it was only coming out of the right and it was definitely missing a beat, so I was like "efff ..rma time." Then I played it again and it sounded like it was coming from the left only, so I tried it with headphones on and it was still messed up, and my music sounded wack.
So I just ended up doing a full system reboot and it worked fine afterwards, albeit a small difference in volume if anything. This must be a software issue, I'm sure we'll get a fix soon, ASUS is good about that.
I'm going through the exact same thing. Just opened mine up today. I'm letting the IPS flaw of backlight leakage in certain parts go but every song I play is louder in the right speaker and the left is really low. I'm not trying to overlook your hard work but any help you can provide would be great as to where to start contacting Asus. I don't want to call Jamaica...
My Right Speaker is now dead but it worked last week. The HDMI and headphone jack outputs both speakers.
What did everyone else end up doing on this thread to resolve this? Did it end up as an RMA?

Nexus 7 speaker defective!!!!!

I am currently in the process of sending back my nexus 7 because of a pretty defective speaker. The speaker crackles and pops when played above 40% . It basically renders sound on this thing without headphones as a boon starter.
I have two questions to the forum:
1) is anyone else experiencing this problem?
2) is it true that the problem stems from too much power behind sent to the speaker chip. A guy on another forum reckoned it could be fixed with software but I severely doubt that. I think the speaker is just damaged or loose
Kind Regards

If it helps, I had a similar problem with distortion of certain audio over 50% volume. Fixed it by installing Equalizer and reducing the for the faders two lowest frequency bands.
I can now run full volume without issue.
I think one of theverge people had this as well. I think Topolsky, in their latest podcast said "I liked the speaker" while his disgruntled colleague said speaker was bad. Looks like defect number three has reared its head (screen separation, digitiser fault).
Mine is broken too
I just got off the phone with Google. As soon as I mentioned distorted sound above 50% volume they said It was defective. They are sending me a new one within a week with a box and shipping for the bad one. I'm pretty sure they've been dealing with this a lot. They aren't the manufacturer so they aren't going to dispute or question a bad product. They know they initial bad reviews about sound could destroy sales.
I'm pretty sure that ASUS installed speakers that can't handle the output frequencies. Doubt they have a fix but maybe Google could update the code to meet the speaker frequency range while allowing the headphone jack to retain full audio range. A generic across the board equalizer adjustment might fix the internal speaker issues but would ruin the headphone usage. I just a thought.

It works but makes external speakers and headphones sound terrible. Great idea though. It will have to do until I get a new one. Since so some people aren't having sound issues I'm going to exercise my warranty rights until I'm satisfied.
I've just run into this exact same problem. Looks like I'll also be lodging a RMA for "speaker crackles above 50% volume" with Google.
I have distortion at volumes above 60 % however it varies with material. Cinema Paradiso theme music seams to have the perfect tones to rattle the speaker on mine.
I am not sure if this is normal as mine sounds better than the MP3 of this I was listening to above. I really don't want to be parted from my Nexus. Still I am disappointed that the speaker is impractical for film watching when on trips.

The replacement device I received yesterday, which has screen lift issues (3rd device with the same problem) now has speaker/ headphone jack issues. I left it turned on and charging yesterday evening for about 2 hours and when I came back to unplug it the device was stuck at the Google boot up screen and the back/bottom of the device was 127 degrees (I have an infrared temperature gun). Now the speakers and headphones can barely be heard with the volume all the way up. Hopefully the third replacement will not have any problems.
Bleh was starting to think I had a good one but was in denial about the speaker problem. Glad I found this thread so I try to get a better one. All these mfg defects it's like you won the lottery when u get a good one. Lol
Got a nexus with the same issue, it honestly does not bother me as I use my headphones a majority of the time. I rather dig in there then to send it in and have a risk of getting a unit with other issues

This worked for me after all. I'll be honest one day my nexus got really hot when charging. Played some music after and it had blown out. It seems that the bass is the reason for the popping sound.
I have the same problem ... my right speaker sounds like a trash can -.-
edit:
called google... system problems ... could not reach anyone ... niice
edit2:
called google... getting a new device -.-
Same problem here, got RMA a few hours after I sent in the request. New one should be here in a couple of days.
Mine work fine for 2 months and 1 morning I got this cracking and distorted sound at 40%
I did nothing wrong with my tablet and rarely use the speakers....
Well, I was showing a friend how to do voice input. Using SwiftKey. He held the microphone /comma key down continuously - and the nexus screamed. Not his fault. Wouldn't boot up for 5 minutes. Thought it was a gonner. It did boot up eventually, but the speaker is well and truly zapped. Distorted even at the lowest volumes. Unintelligible above 20%.
I was thinking of spending 20 quid to buy a replacement speaker and replace it myself - but it looks like it's a design fault to me (after much Googling). It'll only blow again, will it not?
So maybe a bluetooth speaker...? Anyone tried one? And if you like it, which one?

It's good to know that I'm not the only one to have this problem. Well... I don't know if it's a good thing, but whatever...
I've been using my N7 for exactly 1 month, and one day to the next, the sound is crispy. Under 40% everything sounds great, but above, it's very crispy, very ugly as if the speaker was saturated.
I've just contacted Google and they will replace it by a new one. I just hope that the one I will receive will not have any issue.

HTC already releasing sub par microphones

With the recent news about Nokia winning the injuction over the HDR microphones weeks ago I would like to tell you guys that HTC is now distributing it's latest HTC One with a sub par microphone.
A friend of mine got an htc one with a serial number HT354*** and just last week we video recorded a music festival. After the festival we checked our recorded videos as we plan to burn it on a CD and we we're shocked to how distorted his HTC One has recorded the video while mine was perfectly clear! We didn't actually found out the issue when we bought it since when we tested it, it recorded perfectly fine on low noise environment. So the issue about the HDR mic instantly came to my mind.
So any new users here already tested the functionality of their microphones? His HTC One was more perfect than mine though like his LCD screen was way brighter than mine, the white plastic on the sides were not that yellowish anymore and has better image results on the camera(Can't really tell as I'm using a custom kernel while he's using stock).
Although in contrast to that distorted noise he got his unit with the different microphone seems alot more sensitive than mine. He showed me a video recording in a park and I can hear birds chirping in the video unlike mine where I couldn't even barely hear my television set on normal volume when recording videos.
Or your friend might have defective mics
unlikely
Well if it is defective it wouldn't have been clear on low noise environments. Also called him just an hour ago and it's still pretty clear.
Well on a second thought... the back microphone could be defective so I'll probably wait for him to replace his unit. But still posted a thread here so I could at least get some additional info if others are encountering this also.

Mine's a HT352 and I think I still have the good mics. Haven't been in a particularly noisy place as of yet to try, but there aren't any concerts happening anytime soon ):
I actually have noticed different plastic material for 35 units, whiter but less fancy feel also some of the recent units have different volume button coating (less glossy)
as for the mics, it's hard for you to tell without more tests, keep in mind both the bottom and back microphone holes should be fully uncovered during recording in order to get the full HDR quality (i did tests covering either one of them and the quality significantly reduced)
I doubt the camera is different, as for the screen as long as both are C2_2 yours that's within normal variance
I don't think you are right. Not yet.
i have serial FA35A.... , why yours is HT, can anyone explain the origin of the serial and how to identify if its from a new or old batch? video recording sound seems find, but i havent recorded it in loud condition yet, i have a concert in a few days, will test it soon

Thanks! Then he's better returning the handset for warranty then as we are aware and sure that when we were recording it we aren't covering any mic holes.
I follow a lot of smartphone news websites and I am sure that once HTC transitions to another microphone design there will be a report somewhere.
The HDR microphone is a huge selling point for me so I am doing a lot of research about it and the stock.
I currently have the Nexus 4 which btw has a terrible microphone in video recording. It's a software issue waiting to be fixed.
I want to see what will android 4.3 bring to the table next month and then sell my phone and buy the htc one.

Hi, i bought the phone yesterday with the same serial number FA35.... do you have any build issues? like, not major, hairline gap on top and bottom between the speaker grills and the plastic line? I observe the gaps, I hoped for a HT series phones, but got FA....... it kind of eats my brain.
FA35 is an entire month, it probably represents nearly a million phones.

I am sure that there will be a report when they will change the micrphone.
BTW, using the 1600 iso setting will solve the low fps of the low light video recording.

Loose headphone port-Clove Technology

First post here, and it's a slightly negative one so apologies. I got my Z3C last Thursday, set it up over the weekend, and thought everything was great. Then I noticed that there was significant play when I put my headphones in - basically the headphone jack could wobble around. I have owned lots of different items with 3.5mm ports in and none have ever felt like this-when inserted it felt like the bottom of the jack was able to move around. To be fair the sound does not seem effected-no distortion etc.
So I packaged it up, thinking it was clearly defective, and sent it back to Clove, who to be fair had been good up until that point. They received it today and have emailed me to say that they have looked at three other Z3Cs and they are all the same.
I contacted Sony tonight and they say that there shouldn't be significant moment, but I wanted to check here- has anyone noticed significant movement from the headphone jack when plugged in? I am annoyed that I could well end up with a phone that I am not happy to keep, but that I would feel uncomfortable selling on as in my eyes it is faulty.
Thanks for any advice/experiences you can share.

Seriously though, mine is fine.
I hadn't noticed, so I plugged in my headphones, wiggled the connector and could see a tiny bit of movement. Plugged them into my Z1, and see the exact same amount of movement.
Non-issue, at least for me!

I'm not talking about tiny movement- I have compared with a Note 3 and a Note 10.1, as well an IPad, and while there is very minor movement., the jack feels firmly held in place. This is not the case on the Z3C. I wish I had filmed the issue before sending it back, but didn't think there would be any issue with a refund as to me it was clearly not standard.

Well, I didn't notice any movement in my Z3c until after a couple of weeks my music kept pausing. Upon further inspection it seems that any movement in the headphone jack causes my Z3c to connect/disconnect the headphones. Today, over a matter of minutes, this degraded and my headphones are now unusable as the slightest movement causes my headphones to connect/disconnect. I'm really not happy with this and expect a phone to be built to last more than two weeks.
Film it, want to compare

Mine moves also back-forth, left-right while on my iPhone it is solid. But I don't see your issue, if it's a defect (and not by design) then you have a two years warranty
Why send it back now? As long as the sound is good?
I've notice a tiny play in mine too but I believe that its cuz the waterproof. There is a plastic stuff inside and that make move the eraphone jacks
I can confirm the slight movement on my Z3C's headphone jack too. And yes, there's some sort of plastic jacket inside the jack, this what makes the headphone plug wobble. It's a non-issue, pretty sure it's part of the waterproofing design.

if it's a defect (and not by design) then you have a two years warranty

But what if I've rooted it already?
I checked a z3c, z3 and a z2 at a store today, z3c has the most play of them all, z2 is the most stable. Really that is the only part of the z3/z3c that feels cheap and badly made.
This is part of the "waterproofing design", but i suspect that it is a faulty design and this gap is actually responsible for the many water damaged z3c phones. People report that they just submerged it for a minute or two in fresh water (under a tap, or it fell in a toilet... lol) and the screen died for all of them, the phone continued working but the screen was dead.

Today when I started to cycle from university towards home my music kept pausing. First i thought someone else was using my spotify and I put my phone to airplane mode but it kept happening and I noticed this same movement. When it tilts from back towards front music pauses and now it is also unusable just as above text states. Has anyone contacted their services about warranty? I would like to know what have they answered. I usually listen music from an hour to two per day so obviously this is an issue for me.
EDIT: So i went to the service and they said that headphone jack can be broken in two if it is targeted at with too much power. And if this is the case warranty will not recover it so it is fixable but customer will pay. In any other case warranty should cover it. They their service would take two weeks..

I have the exact problem. I just sent it in for warranty repair. They said they will check if it's user damage and move on from there.

Same happened to me, but as my phone already fell twice and I have signs of it on its back, I won't get any repair under warranty... I guess it's because of the plastic around... There's no sign of damage around it, but when I move the jack music stops suddenly. That's bad
I had the exact same error of a loose jack then music pausing. Then the headphones weren't picked up at all. sent it to sony, they fixed it all fine. No problems
I have the exact same problem, and I see it as a problem since the music doesn't work properly for the second time since I got the phone.
The first time, I sent the phone to the after sale service and it was repaired within the warranty limits, it was three months ago. Now, the problem occurs again and I'm a bit disappointed. If I can't use my phone for three weeks every two or three months, what's the point of getting a flagship phone from Sony ?
I am also having the same problem.
Thought I was lucky not having a cracked glass back/screen so far...alas
I believe they also reset your phone during this process? Does the backup save and restore everything?
I have/had the same problem until it stopped working completely. Sent it to Sony today morning they told me on chat that the repair will take 5-7 days...

Well you should factory reset your phone anyway, before you are sending it for repair. That's the first thing to do when you have any problems with your phone...
The back up saves all messages, phone calls, phonebook, apps settings etc. so yeah, everything I would say...
Same here... I'll return the phone next week to the retailer. Let's see what they'll say.
So, after my headphone jack got broken and I sent it for repair, (which only took less than 1 week btw) the phone is not waterproof Anyway I can listen to music again
EDIT: I am an idiot, was testing it with opened flap lol, the phone is actually waterproof

One Speaker on my 6P was louder than the other.

I received my 6P yesterday, and by this morning I dropped it into a UPS box to send it back.
So, I got the 64GB aluminum version, it arrived a day after I placed my order. I set it up and let it install its OS update, which took forever, then I started to use it. Right away I noticed that the top speaker seemed louder than the bottom speaker when the phone was playing notification sounds. In two phone calls, people complained that it sounded like I was underwater or had them on speakerphone.
I was a little concerned by the speaker issue, so I took the time to play back audio from NPR and then tried a few videos. While playing back video, I flipped the phone this way and that, and moved the phone back and forth from ear to ear just to make sure I wasn't deaf in one ear. The top speaker was definitely much louder than the other. With the mic being housed with the bottom speaker, I'm lead to believe both issues are related.
I contacted customer support and the lady who took my call said that another user had called with the same issue, but she couldn't recall which model they had. She had spoken with the design team about this and they said it was a defect, that both speakers should be firing at the same volume level.
We did the mandatory factory reset and I fired up YouTube - then I moved my old phone back and forth over the speakers of the 6P and she could hear the difference too, so I ended up mailing it back for a refund - I plan to buy another, but an exchange would entail a $549 hold on my bank account, so a refund it is.
So, that said, I'm curious - has anyone else had this issue? I searched the web but didn't find anything, but I've tweeted to some people who were opening new devices and one of them said he felt the top speaker was louder on his unit too (I didn't say which speaker, I just asked if one was louder than the other), while another person said she'd follow up.
It seems like it's a relatively common issue.

Oh dear... I wouldn't have minded it if it was just a tad louder, but it was bad - plus I was having some speaker overdrive issues as well. I guess I'll wait for Google to process my refund and keep an eye on these threads before deciding if I want to take the risk again... Which sucks, because I was loving the phone. Hell, I picked this over a Lumia 950 XL because I wanted to use some half decent apps and have access to Tap to Pay. Sure, Android still waits forever for iOS apps, but Windows waits for never. -_-
I kept my phone regardless of the volume issue... lol.

I've blogged about this and have included all these links - thanks for the info! I really hope when I buy another one that it don't have the speaker issue. Google needs to step out and address Speakergate so users are aware of this issue.
https://tekmuze.wordpress.com/2015/11/04/forget-bending-the-nexus-6p-may-have-speaker-defect/
I see on Reddit that some people are hearing the exact opposite of what I was told by Google support - Google support is telling them that this actually "feature" and not a flaw, which brings to mind old comics about Windows 95 and 98 bugs being labeled as features... -_-
If it's a "fault" on all phones then surely it's an easy software fix. I'm surprised none of the reviews mentioned it?

I too am amazed... But keep in mind that review units are hand picked and sent out by Google, so it's likely that phones without this flaw were sent to the press.
