Upgrade to 8.1 forced me to turn off Enhanced 4G LTE Mode - Essential Phone Questions & Answers

After upgrading to 8.1 via OTA i wasnt able to make or receive phone calls. Anyone calling me went straight to voicemail and my calls stated "Server Error" then dropped. I was told to turn this option off and it worked.. Working fine on the Verizon network before the upgrade.
Anyone had/have this problem?

Not seeing the issue.
Preferred network type is set to LTE/CDMA
Enhanced 4G LTE mode is on
No issues

For me it was the reverse it actually allows me to do voice over lte now. My essential is the Sprint variant, i have it unlocked on simple mobile, and it would not allow voice over lte on naugat or ob3. So yes ob8.1 is awesome for tmobile users on the Sprint variant.

*228 fixed it. Back in business! Thanks

No internet on my 6P while on a call

Just got my 6P today, activated it on Verizon, and noticed I have no internet access while on a call. upgraded from a Galaxy S4 which was able to do both at the same time. Any ideas?

1) Check to make sure your APN protocol is set to IPv6.
2) Make sure you've selected "Enchanced 4G LTE Mode" under Cellular network settings.
3) Open the dialer and press *#*#4636*#*# to access the hidden phone settings menu. Make sure that it reads "TURN OFF VOLTE PROVISIONED FLAG" (as this will mean that it's currently active.)
4) Beyond that I'd call Verizon and ask to speak to a technical support expert.
You have to call Verizon to turn on the HD calling. It's a feature that let's you do what you asked. Been there, done it.

As far as I'm aware, verizon doesn't allow mvno carriers to use their advanced calling through ST or Tracfone

Yes it does. It also says searching for signal whenever I reset my phone. It has internet but I can't receive text or calls until I make an outgoing call then it switches from searching for service to Verizon service. I wonder if it had anything to do with ims registration? (Says it's off )

But using straight talk i was already on Verizon service (that's who they use in this area) of I flashed Verizon firmware I'm showing official device shouldn't I be able to activate the features? I swear I saw a post a month or two ago a guy flashed to Verizon from unlocked device and was able to do ota updates (which I can't i have to plug into laptop) and had activated Wi-Fi and video calling. I'm not sure if he rooted or not but I've been trying find post for about two weeks can't find it anymore. But any help or recommendations are appreciated. I haven't rooted but been thinking about it. If you could recommend a link would be greatly appreciated.

Straight Talk /Tracfone does not block the service provided by Verizon. My new Galaxy S8 G950U Settings/ Advanced Calling /Activate, is a Verizon app that controls access. Without vzw service you can't activate.
Has anyone found a fix to enable activation? Hoping root comes through on this.
Note: ST after 4 calls to customer service said there is nothing they can do.

HELP! [LS977] Lost all cellular and data connections

I received a new LS977 for use on the Sprint network. Upon receiving it I contacted sprint to activate and they instructed me to use my sim from my Nexus 5x. Well I got voice but no data because of the wrong sim. So they sent me a new sim. In the intern I unlocked and flashed twrp, flashed the stock rom. Then wiped then flashed LineageOS and attempted to activate when I received the sim. Upon install I was not getting anything, just roaming indicator. I played with the cellular settings but update profile crashes. So I flashed a stock rom.
Upon booting into a stock rom. Hands free activation fail with network error even on WiFi. Still shows roaming in the indicator. I then attempted to follow these instructions:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/v20/how-to/manual-program-sprint-ls997-v20-t3557676
Still nothing suck in roaming, but calls work but have no APN's in the cell networks settings. Update profile fails with network error.
Anyone with experience with these phones on Sprint please help me out. Thanks

also with my experience with most aosp roms, it may show no service when not in calls, if you toggle from cdma/lte auto prl to global then back to cdma/lte it resolves the phantom bars until reboot.

Lost LTE on Verizon

Ok... I screwed up! There is a new Verizon tower near my house and I wanted to update my roaming, so I did the *228. Alas, by accident I chose option 1 (Program phone) instead of option 2 (Update roaming). Immediately after that I lost LTE. 3G is the best I now get.
I am running 7.1 latest update. Not rooted.
Suggestions on how to get LTE back up?
Thanks!

Try this:
*#*#4636#*#*
Phone Information
Change Preferred network type to LTE/WCDMA
If after cycling your connectivity it doesn't pop onto the Verizon 4G network, reboot your phone, you should be good then.
I dont know what it is about that setting that is different, because Verizon doesnt support WCDMA, however this seems to select the correct type of LTE connectivity and you'll be in that. Be aware though, this will likely prevent 3G from working if you enter an area without good 4G coverage.
I have tried all recommendations. LTE works for a while then it is back to 3G. On a further note, when this happens I cannot send a text message but a reboot will solve the text message issue.
I am at a loss. It seems there is no way to make the settings accessed by *#*#4636#*#* STICK.

It not just you. I have been frustrated for weeks. I thought it was only because I upgraded to 8.1 but your situation just answered that. I just ordered a new SIM from Verizon and wont run any programming once I install it. I contacted Essential on it as well as others. I hope the two can work this out.
Best option is a new some. *228 is usually no suggested on LTE unless you really know what you are doing. The PRL should be automatic on LTE.
get a new sim, your is borked now most likely
Will try new SIM tomorrow and let you know...
A VZW rep had me do *228 when I was having some issues with texting when I first got the phone. Fixed the texting issues but then I couldn't get LTE either. A new SIM fixed both issues I was having. *228 is apparently known to bork VZW LTE.
Had the same issues after using the *228 method I advise not using that at all been stuck on 3g since. Getting a new sim thursday hoping that helps (using straight talk Verizon Sim)
Here is a bit of information I have discovered. The phone is stable as long as I NEVER turn on WiFi! IF I have WiFi turned on (no connection to a network required) AND I enter a poor or non-existent service area, I loose service until I go back in with the *#*#4636#*#* and change settings back yet again!
anyone with a new sim got it working? Verizon shipped me one today and put it in. Avoided calling 228 but cannot get the sim to activate itself.
Got a SIM not provisioned error. I turned it off, took the SIM out and checked it, put it back, rebooted and still nothing. Not connecting to Verizon Network. Im afraid to call support because they will insist to call 228 to program it.
BTW the final version of 8.1 fixed all the Verizon weirdness I had going on. I popped it back in 'Global' in the Mobile Network settings (which is equivalent to 'LTE/CDMA/UMTS (PRL)' in the Phone Information section) and it hopped immediately on to Verizon, no kinda looking like sprint, no blank, no need to dial *228 for a new PRL it just worked. In fact on reboot it doesn't sit there with No Service scrolling across the screen for 15-20 seconds after boot, it shows up Verizon Wireless immediately.

May you should try reinserting your sim my phone self corrected once my update was done.
Here are my results:
Installed new SIM - same issue
Did a network data settings reset
Verizon did a flush and reinitialize of my account.
Still same result.
Don't know exactly how or why but about 10 mins later I noticed my phone was OFF.
I powered back up and MOST issues we're gone.
The final fix was to go into developer options and turn on "cellular data always active"
Working great on LTE+

Try putting it in "4G/LTE", wait for it to connect, then back to Global.
After I posted my above message, I did go mucking around in the settings and got it stuck in 3G (even after reboots, etc), then corrected it by doing this.
And quick clarification for the post above this one, it is "Mobile Data Always Active", mine was already on and I never modified it, so that must be the default.

VOLTE Wifi Calling with Unlocked S10+

Hey there, I've been doing a bit of research but it has been a long while since i have done any flashing of firmware etc. I received my s10+ device today. Model number is SM-G975UZKAXAA. I am a Verizon wireless customer. When I placed this device on my account I noticed I have no access to Voice over LTE, and I also do not have any access to Wifi Calling. My question is the following. I read somewhere a couple of weeks ago that if I wanted something like this I would need to flash the original VZW Firmware which would have all the lovely bloatware etc on the device. Is there any way I can do that? I have seen firmware that has been posted but I dont seem to see anything that specifically is the VZW apps etc which should (hopefully allow VOLTE and Wifi Calling and maybe even HD Calling, if thats a thing)
I would appreciate any info anyone can provide me on this, as the only solution I can see at the moment is to return the device and start over with a VZW specific device.
Cheers~
Likewise but with a T-Mobile firmware for me
Unlocked US version here with Verizon and wifi calling and volte working out of the box.
You may want to call Verizon to see if they need to provision it for your account.

Yes, it works with my unlocked S10+ on Verizon. It surprised the heck out of me as I too have the unlocked Note9, but no wifi calling.
What about on AT&T? Can anyone say if they can at least get VOLTE? WiFi calling would be the icing on the cake. Thank you

Wifi calling worked on my unlocked S10 out of the box on T-Mobile. I'll try and check on VoLTE later but I get **** reception near work.
Can you explain how you enabled WiFi calling on unlocked version, on Verizon? I can't find a way to do it. What about HD Voice? My real problem is that data does not work while on a call, using my unlocked, on Verizon. Is there a way to get that working?
I have unlocked S10+ on VZW. I get LTE+ which is VoLTE, data works while on a call.

I don't think that is right. LTE+ and VoLTE are different things. As well as data while on a call.
VoLTE means your call is being transmitted over LTE. I'm pretty sure you can use data while on a call WITHOUT VoLTE.

How do you test if VoLTE is working? Do you get an Icon for it?
I tested WiFi calling by going into airplane mode, turning Wifi on, and making a call and it worked. But didn't get a special icon for it.
For those basing your decision to buy unlocked/international vs branded, be warned. I can only speak for Att, but I spent about 2 hours arguing with their level 2 tech department and here's what I have learned. If you have a sim that is provisioned on a branded phone and then put the sim into an unlocked/international phone, you will be able to use volte, wi-fi calling, etc., but only until the carrier pings your imei for a periodical check, once that happens, those features disappear. Also, on Android Pie, the Enhanced LTE Services tab under Mobile Data has been removed as it is turned on by default, also confirmed with ATT. The only way to manually check is to toggle wifi calling on and see if it works. Anyway, just trying to help as I have gone to a branded phone for the first time in 6 years because the reception and enhanced features are more important than rooting to me.
I was able to get wifi and volte working on my unlocked s10 by putting sim into verizon phone, letting network recognize it, enabling advanced calling and such on that device and then taking the sim out and putting it back in my new unlocked s10. The option for volte appears in settings-connections-mobile networks.
VoLTE works on tmobile, not that anyone should be surprised. That has been the case for the S8 thru N9. Now... I noticed that Samsung removed the VoLTE toggle from settings.

Using what I learned in this thread, I called Verizon and talked to Level2 support. They tried to get everything working and could not - but this was when I had the new SIM installed, provided by Samsung when I got my S10+.
So because others here spoke of their 'other' SIM, I suggested we try that - so I plugged in the SIM from my S8 and asked them to reprovision everything. They did... and....Now everything that didn't work ... WORKS.
So I have an Unlocked S10+ on Verizon that has (among other things):
- Wifi Calling
- Real Time Text
- VoLTE ("HD Voice") (Which means data now works while I'm on a phone call)
- Visual Voicemail
So it seems the Samsung SIM was part of the problem, and they are reporting this to Samsung. The tech support person told me others have reported similar issues and they will get with Samsung to figure out what the issue is.
Hopefully this helps some others as well!
