Did Developers avoided this Device or work on custom roms on? - Xiaomi Mi A1 Questions & Answers

As we all know Mi a1 makes it difficult for custom rom building coz of A/B partitions ..
But i wanted to whether all the developers are in to make a lot of stable custom roms or they have moved away from the device.
I am not asking for customs roms now itself just wanted to know there is support and working on in the background or not.

I don't think they're avoiding it, it's just taking time to bring up the device tree.. I might dig into it a bit this weekend and try to bring up the device tree to 8.1, the problem is that even in 7.1.2 we don't have everything working. also, Xiaomi did a terrible job with the kernel, took them 4 months to release it and when they did they released an old 7.1.2 based kernel with the commits squashed into one commit over an older CAF tree

Developers are hampered by the lack of availability of source code that is yet to be released by xiaomi, (they have released the code, but not Oreo) otherwise we would have good ROMs by now

LineageOS is out. And I'll say yes.
Once LineageOS is perfectly stable you'll see many more ROMs.
No, developers are not purposely avoiding the device. On the contrary the day after the sources dropped we had 3 ROMs (broken nonetheless, only RIL worked) by three different devs.
As of right now, everyone has joined hands and are fixing LOS14.1
Even Francisco Franco said he's getting his kernel to this device, just be a bit patient.

If your waiting for development then you have not done your research. Development devs dont buy from this oem. They even avoid it. The best you can hope for is some of the users porting the roms over but they will most likely be buggy as they always are with this oem.

Then what are your thoughts about Pixel Experience on Redmi Note 4? It has a very few bugs, and in fact gives better battery life than MIUI 9. That ROM isn't considered to be a port, right?

Any rom will give better batter battery life then miui. That is due to all the background syncing that it does in the back ground.
As for that rom. Any rom that brings over a pixel like rom is a port.
I wouldn't really know as this device isn't sold in my country nor does anyone I know even look twice at the oem.

Stop this A/B partitioning scheme BS. Of course, it does not make life easier for the developers but it certainly isn't the biggest obstacle.

Really. Ask the devs that got the pixel and after that won't touch a device with the partition setup. It makes things almost impossible to get working right. Me, I would just repatriation the device and remove the partition all together.

I'm not neglecting that but, in my opinion, it isn't that big of a deal anymore. I'm sure that even we if we didn't had it, things wouldn't be much better.

Well considering the oem you are right. But for normal devices those that don't have the partition are the more dev friendly. Just talk to some of the devs. Most have sworn off anything that uses the dual partition.

Absolutely true, it took months to see a stable release of TWRP for the Pixel. And there's still no official LOS as well.
However there are a few ROMs and more device with A/B are out like PH-1 and Moto Z2

For reals though, devs working on ROMs for this device, feel free to create/list your PayPal accounts for donations.
We ask so much of the devs it's only fair we buy them a drink/meal for all their hard work and persistence!

Oxygen OS review by some dude

Hello everyone.
The much awaited OS that no one really waited for is finally here. If you don't know what I'm talking about then let me clue you in. OxygenOS is known for being developed by Oneplus... Isn't that it?... Ohh yeah its also known for being closed source, featureless, 'not wait worthy', over hyped, bugged and not being great.
It will seem sooo good when you compare it with the ROMs by other OEMs (or maybe when you ask some noobs) but when you are used to the wonderful development by the Oneplus community its just like any other non-advertised ROM that no one uses .
Beware : Some people may tell you to appreciate the effort and to accept it for what it is but how can you do that when your daily driver is a build by the Blisspop Team or Teamsek or Mahdi (just to name a few). They may also tell you to install other mods and Xposed for customizing the ROM but isn't that settling?
Oneplus' logo is Never Settle but OxygenOS didn't even get me startled. The only glamorous things about the OS were the hyped PA developers team and making people wait so that they want it more and also how can you forget the full Gapps package that people call bloat.
The OS is pretty normal and should had been released a long time ago and of course they apologized for that and happily gave away 5 phones thus again winning sympathy points. (Yay for Oneplus).
I don't intend to criticize Oneplus. I love their product and hence gave my money to them . I also have confidence in their future products. What I and lot of other folks hate is over hyping things that aren't that great and then making people believe that it is.
And yes obviously i will keep OxygenOS as one of those ROMs in MultiROM which i will nevver use.
Thanks for reading and do voice your opinion.
Something magical happened on 4/4/15. One of the best ROMs i.e. OxygenOS was released on that day. The following features make it the bomb :-
1) Clean and simple UI and also lightweight at 715 MB
2) Gives the pleasure of owning a stock Nexus device and making people forget why they bought the Oneplus One
3) Gives some people the ability to develop it even though its not open source
4) Full Gapps package pre-included so that nobody has to go through the trouble of flashing the Mini Gapps package.
5) Was stress tested and OTAed for 4-5 months and thus is very stable and gives great performance and also OTA
6)And the best thing is that these 6 features are enough to make it the best.
Do you love OxygenOS? Then share your good experiences below.
It pretty sums it up what a lot of peoples(and i) think!Great writing overall!

I was just really surprised to see all the good reviews that OxygenOS got.
A lot of noobies out there my friend! [emoji14]
some people like a stock Google experience without all the tweaks CM did. You're basically saying all Nexus and Google Experience devices suck because they have the same OxygenOS feel too. To each their own.
I will say that I do miss some features that CM11S had but I do like the ability to change my phone with tweaks how I want it too.
btw, not a noob.
Actually. I've used pretty much all the other ones including Bliss and Temasek. I settled on Temasek as it was the most stable, best battery life and great performance. I have been using it for about three months now. I will say that Oxygen so far has exceeded my expectation and has been great. I will stick to it for now and see how it functions as a daily driver. However, so far I'm impressed.
Oxygen could be a great base for developers like clean Nexus. Would be awesome.

The install on this ROM is very quick. It's a light ROM, and I like that. It is quick with page to page changes and app loading. It is not a power-house ROM. If I want to have niceties on a ROM, I will install what I wish. This ROM feels more fluid than the stock KK ROMs. I plan on testing it out, as all of the functions are working for me just fine. It is not a feature laden ROM, never the less, it may fit for some.
OP, given the clear dislike you have for the company's lack of timely follow through with releases and the hype... I get that portion of your post and I agree. What I don't understand is why "keep OxygenOS as one of those ROMs in MultiROM which i will nevver use"? It sounds more like poetic expression than sensical. Free yourself, Never Settle.

OxygenOS is not open sourced.
I'm only going to say this once. Either keep to the topic at hand, or don't say anything at all. We can do without the flaming & name calling. The next instance I catch of either in this thread will call for an infraction to the offending party/parties, and I will close this thread.

Except that the Nexus stock roms are practically open source (or at least a large part of them are) plus a few closed source add-ons, just like CM11S.

Bugs don't make a ROM unstable. It's unstable when there are problems like random reboots and FCs caused by the ROM itself, not user setup or installed apps. OxygenOS is in fact stable.

Is that what you were talking about in the OP? If so, then it's not clear. What is clear is that OxygenOS runs fast, smooth and stable for most people, but it has minor bugs that don't cause instability, and it's feature list is short.

CM port

Hi everyone,
I have juste created a thread asking for the official port of CM on this device (I can't post the link because I'm new....), section device requests.
Be free to comment the post (even a +1) , I am sure you can find the link we google, and we have to prey that they will take a look at it

Won't happen until Alcatel releases the source code and given that the phone was just released to canada as recently as June 30th you can expect to wait a couple of months for that.
Just want I want a bug filled rom that gets rid of one problem and another pops up. I just love when we all use cm and the Bluetooth crashes all the time, disconnects, and overall bearly works. I love when the wifi disconnects and you have to restart the phone just to get it to work.
Sorry I'll stick to the stock rom where everything works perfectly fine.
Wont be any cm roms until we get twrp first. Im shocked more devs dont own this device.

It hasn't even been out 2 months yet. It's an off name most are not familiar with and alcatel's first true shot at an enterprise/flagship level device. It has threads on slickdeals.net advertising it's low price...it will eventually get support by either the source being released or a new exploit being found that can be used to provide temp or perm root...once someone has root they can pull the recovery and boot partitions and development can begin.
It's unrealistic to expect developer's to be jumping all over this phone so soon. I'd never even heard of it till I was looking to buy a zen phone 2 and found so many articles comparing it to the idol 3.

yeah id miss it too but meh lol but theres the dolby atmos app that has been ported from a lenovo ROM that should work with our speakers and also there can be a way to port the colorOS camera app from oppo phones those can take up to 50mp shots because they use sony sensors even on the one plus one has been achieved an yet it has the same sony sensor also hopefully xposed framework could work on us because of the adaway for youtube ^^
Well if someone's working on a CM port I'd be interested in helping to test it.
Thatd be nice id help too for testing purposes im a very heavy user and this phone has been keeping up with me lately
I'll throw my vote in for a cm port. as well as another tester if needed. Dont have tons of experience, but I'll be happy to help where I can.
well im pretty sure theres going to be a bounty thread for it or any other rom ^^
hi guys,
i just ordered this phone and soon within this month hopefuly will land in my hands in india.
my question is cant we use sources of other SD 615 phones like MI4I, YUreka and TCL M3G to develop rom for our device/ or cant we use their roms with our stock kernel ???
as TCL M3G is already having cm 12.1 and MIUI V6 and several other roms on movilesdualsim forum

Can you use the computer chip from a v8 chevy in a v8 ford? The software has to match to the hardware. How is the software going to control the screen when they have different digitizers? Different sound cards. Just as with your pc the drivers have to match the hardware.

One of the CM maintainers, contacted me here on a PM today and requested files from the device. The work on the CM port will be started probably the next week. I will not disclose his ID for now in order to save him from possible questions on PMs. Probably CyanogenMod soon will be available for the Idol ... I just spread the news.

Thanks for the update! It's been quiet for a little bit regarding a CM port. Good to see it's still WIP.
While I look forward to having trees to build with, I find it kinda funny that they asked for files when a couple of them have the device already. Unless the files are from a different version?

Jack of all Trades, and Master of NONE??

Hello Developers, fellow users. I am Sam and I'd like to point out something that has been happening everywhere for years but it gets ignored.
I've been using Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 since when it was released in India and I was a XDA member even before that! Previously I had a Samsung Galaxy flagship phone.
Guys, all we've been doing is chasing our tails. Let me tell you why I say this. It starts with using MiUi and getting bored, then eventually Stock Android/AOSP ROMs are made (Of course because of the hard work the developers put in). We use them, they work really good, and their bugs are fewer.
However, as soon as there's a "Newer Version" of Android released, everthing else is left in the dust and forgotten!
Here's what I want to ask anyone and everyone who would answer it......
Why do we chase something that isn't even released for our device? What's the rush?
It started with Marshmallow release.
There were good lollipop ROMs and Marshmallow did not come out for our device, but nevertheless, the process started. Okay, but by the time when some good Marshmallow ROMs were being made, Nougat gets released and all hell breaks loose, "AGAIN"!!! Once more, the process started. And again on the verge of having some good Nougat ROMs, "Oreo is released"? Please see the pattern here!!
Now, we know that Nougat might never be made available, officially, for kenzo.
My point is we haven't had a bug free ROM with good signals, ever!
Not in any version of Android!!
I urge the developers to consider, even partnering up, for making a good and bug free "Marshmallow ROM", Nougat Rom before moving on to OREO
@Demon_sss @TheStrix @xyxx @GreekDragon @PhenomX1998 @psndna88 @abhishek987 @TheDarkStrix @Umang96 @jhenrique09 @AmolAmrit @wight554 @dadi11 @poad42 @O_dinochka @minz1 @Ashish94 @ValoXis @flar2 @rocknegi @srisurya95 @Sudeep Duhoon @EsromG5

Bored of MIUI is the basis for discussion? I'm in support of all devs I'm happy the way they progressed starting from Marshmallow & now we have stable Nougat where as Xiaomi is abandoning older devices.
Regarding the network strength there's not a huge difference between MIUI & Custom roms imo.
You have two choices try taking this to the next level of Xiaomi executives or never buy MI devices.

1. The basis of this discussion is, actually, the love for stock Android. Not only we get bored of MiUi but also by using TouchWiz, Flyme etc. Okay!!
2. No we don't have stable ROMs yet, not really!!
3. It's strategy to abandon older devices that Xiaomi also follows, nothing odd about it!
So, in short,
I thank thou for your UNvaluable inputs here!!
I think AOSIP by shrisurya is almost complete nougat ROM with best signals and stability.RR,nitrogen, los are pretty strong ones too,so no problem in focusing on developing Oreo ones.just a rookie's thought.

Nougat ROMs are already plenty stable. Never experienced any bugs with the ROM I'm using for about 2 months now. Signal quality is the same with MIUI on mine. Using Desolation ROM by the way.

To be fair, your thread is actually pointless/stupid. It's just ranting. You claim there are no stable Nougat, yet there are a lot here that says otherwise. Your definition of stable is suspect here. Probably, stable = perfect.
It's easy to check if signal strength really is better in MIUI. Flash MIUI, put your phone down somewhere then take note of the signal strength(dbm and asu not the signal bar) with several second intervals for several minutes(until you're satisfied) then do the same for the other ROM you want. Mine showed no difference. The only thing better with MIUI was camera quality.
I am using Nitrogen OS nougat for quite some time now, and I must say it's totally stable, never faced any problem till now. And I have even compared the dBm and asu with miui roms, and there's no difference practically, and there's no call drops or poor call quality issues also. You can definitely give it try, I don't know what else you mean by stable.

Project Treble for Mi6

So as most of you probably are aware of the OnePlus fans made a petition for Project Treble but they got the response that they didn't have a partition for it. We on the other hand have the /cust partition.
Therefore we have made a petition for Project Treble

I doubt this can even work, because MIUI changes Android in a lot of places. So I dont think that MIUI can be "placed upon stock Android" partition with all the changes it has.

Well, they will have to make it work with devices launching with Oreo. So Mi 7 for example.

There is no reason to do it for Mi6 though (I mean Xiaomi doesn't have one of course).

They don't have to do it as the device didn't launch with Oreo. It would however be nice to have and we already have a partition of the right size anyway.
The huge amount of work to bring treble to mi6 makes 100% sure that never will happen.
If they do it for all new devices (and they must do), there is less work to do to implement it on older devices like MI6. Expect for specific hardware/features, MIUI source code is the same for all devices.
But does Google FORCES the device manufactures to use trebble? All I read was, that Google works together with them for the Devices which comes out with Oreo.
Google Force manufacturer to use treble for devices that will be sold with Oreo or later. For device that came out with Nougat, Treble is optional.

Signed, even if I doubt we will ever get PT for Mi6, it is always good to show that there is a community of enthusiasts and devs who care about this (same as with Kernel sources).

I see, it might actually be possible for our device to support treble. I've been reading on this topic for the past few days but there is not much information on how he managed to do it except changing the mount point of a partition. Its all a bit to blurry for me to start porting but maybe some other developer can do it.
It looks like xiaobai was able to get treble working ?

Carbon Rom coming soon for Taimen?

https://github.com/CarbonROM/android_device_google_taimen/tree/cr-6.1
Looks like some work on the carbon roms github for taimen!?
Oh please let there be roms. Stock is so boring
Not soon enough from my standpoint...
This is not meant towards the amazing developers here, I am very grateful for thier hard work. But is there an issue with this particular phone ?
Im in shock after 2 plus months of this phone being out there is not one single ROM out yet. A next generation Nexus type phone should be chock-full of ROMs and kernels by now. I'm really at a loss for words.
I've owned 6 of the 8 Nexus / Pixel phones over the years, starting with the Nexus-One. And typically within one month there's several good ROM's out already.

We've only just got stable twrp ...calm down
The pixels are more complicated. Don't like it. Get a OnePlus
Be nice to see some roms. Thanks.
Isn't Project Treble supposed to help make ROM'ing faster and easier ?

ys but that doesn't change the fact that Oreo changed A LOT about the system that the devs have to go through...
It's not because of the phone that we don't have ROMs, it's because Oreoooooooooooo
Roms are going to take time because of the new Android security add-ons. Just look how different encryption is. The last I heard about twrp is that it may not work after each update

To actually answer your question, yes it is coming. Dev's are hard at work on it and I know some people who have been working to build it. Long story short, Oreo sucks nuts for developers. The system is vastly different from years past and many things have to be rewritten from scratch.
Be patient people. Rom's are on the way. These guys do this in their free time for fun.
Alright so I guess I'll update people. Yeah Carbon is working on it, one of theirs devs and I have been the only two I know of working on it besides lineage, so I think we're all still in the process of getting it stable before adding stuff.
We had to fight through a lot of hurdles to get to where we're at, I haven't really seen many rom teams trying to bring up the taimen because of odd device tree, the a/b requirement, and the oddness of the proprietary blobs. But yeah I'd say you're at least a good 3 weeks away from any team dropping any roms.
I have no idea when carbon will be out BTW.
I don't even rom, I just need a rom for the other dev stuff I'm doing lol, so hopefully some fellow devs will get involved.
Thanks for the update. So it seems true that Oreo is much more difficult to develop for ? As well as the Pixel phone's having the a/b partions.
Why didn't Google just leave the Pixel phones like the Nexus and OnePlus phones ? I guess for security reasons ?
And how bout Project Treble ? Does that help down the road ? Once a AOSP ROM is out does Treble make it easier or faster to update it or add stuff quicker?
I'm working on slim ?

Hahaha nice I just fixed a huge issue I was having with lte. I'm trying to convince beans to get pure stable, I already have a base going.
You using the payload.bin method?

Any plans to publish your work? I desperately want to do some low-level modem diags.
So the Pixel XL oreo rom started showing up, so we hope to see ours soon too

Most of my stuff is on git, subs Gerrit or pure git. So it's already out there but as far as rom wise, im part of team pure so it would be in pure nexus. I think the base is solid right now, I just started helping add mods yesterday, specifically OMS related like fonts etc.
As far as modem debugging I'm assuming you're saying that since I'm on a userdebug build, yeah I don't know if I'll post that up or not but it's pretty simple to build.
Just a note for folks out there building, lineage blobs aren't complete, and don't make otapackage, make dist because you need those images signed brillo payload style
