is it... the battery?!?!

I'm at a loss.
A week ago, phone started random resets and looping resets - usually when using a significant resource (i.e. camera, web).
I removed everything, reflashed rom, reflashed the Cingular rom etc. to no avail - same problem.
Today, I'm running the bare bones cingular rom without add ons. Seems like I'm doing fine - battery down to about 88% at 5pm which seems okay (I push mail from the exchange server). I take a picture with the camera and go to send it via email and the phone starts looping resets. I soft reset and I get a low battery message - 12%. I went from 88% to 12% in about two minutes.
Any expert opinions? Is it just the battery or is my phone turning into a brick?

First off how old is the phone? It could be time to get a NEW battery.. these batteries have shelf lifes.. lol.. there days are numbered.

Phone is about 1.5 years old.

Powered the phone off to pull the battery and check it out as I am looking for a new battery on ebay.
When I power the phone up, it now says battery is at 67%
- this makes me concerned that there is a hardware problem with the power management system in the phone...

I'd start by buying a new battery. 1.5 years is a long time for a rechargable battery.

I am having the EXACT same problem.
I even bought an OEM Sanyo on eBay. No change. Then, I complained to Cingular and they replaced the phone (it took a LOT of complaining).
I put the new battery in the new phone, totally vanilla install. It worked great for a couple of hours, then the problems started happening again.
WTF? New phone, new battery and it's still happening.

Yeah - probably no way any level of complaining is going to score me a new phone from Cingular because of the age. I have a new battery on the way, but I am worried that it might be something with the charging circuit or something. Wish somebody with some expertise would speak up on this...

If you are lucky: they sell extended batteries on eBay. I bought me one for my TMO USA VARIO. The stand-by times are really amazing!
In case you consider to buy an extended one make sure that it comes with the battery door as pictured at the link below!
In general the prices on eBay are very low, so, if you are planning to keep your phone a bit longer you might want to buy 2 or 3 batteries at once? (Saves shipping and I really expect that the batteries will soon not be available any longer since the WIZ is discontinued.)

I had this problem. Looping reboots, might work for 5 minutes but then a constant cycle of reboots. Mine is a years and 2 months old.
I though it was the phone and was ready to ditch it. The battery showed a good charge.
I bought a OEM battery off of eBay for 10 bucks and the phone has not had one issue since.
No question it was the battery in my case.

Excellent. Thanks for the response. New battery was purchased last week and should be here soon, so I'll let you know how that turns out.
Might also take a look at the extended battery - seems like a neat feature, although it looks like it would keep the phone from fitting in my car stand (I use tomtom with it).
I'll post a reply when I find out if it is indeed the battery.

Its a battery issue.
I had this problem before.
I would charge my phone using some 3rd party cradle and some how it screws my battery up.
for exmaple. The phone would say the battery is fully charged. but when i use it. the phone only lasts 5 mins.
after awhile. not matter how i charge the battery the battery never went to it's full charge. and like you, it keeps looping.
this was an OEM battery that i had for less then a year.
i got a random cheap battery off ebay to test it. and now it works fine.
i threw out the old battery.

UPDATE: It was..... the battery. Easy OEM replacement off ebay for less than 5 bucks. Running like a champ again. Thanks for the insight. Hopefully this helps someone else in the future.

[Q] shut down normally: now no power light or boot

I apologize in advance if there is a similar thread; I could not find one.
My EVO has been fine, no issues. I use it heavily every day. I'm running Cyanogen 7 nightly 147 (I think) and have been for 4 or 5 days. Using the Tiamat kernel running SMARTASS.
Last night I shut down around midnight with around 50% power. I plugged in the charger but don't remember if the charging light came on then. This morning there is no charging light and the phone won't boot. Tried long holding the power button, battery pulls, pulled the SD card (for lack of anything else to try). Nothing has had any effect.
Does anyone have other ideas? I'm at a loss. If it's dead, it sure chose a strange way to go. Any advice would be very appreciated. I need this thing for work and home. Many thanks.

Just after posting I went back to playing with different chargers and power button pushes. The white HTC logo flashed for a second and the phone vibrated but it went right back off. It's the first sign of life I've seen, but I can't get it to repeat or go further.

This happened to my sisters Evo when she first got it last summer. Luckily it was the battery and HTC shipped a new one for free. The warranty on the evo is 15 months so you can try and request a new battery!

I have found one similar thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=913258. So maybe it is a dead battery. Been getting amazing life recently, so it seems crazy that it would suddenly be dead. Is this common?

Any suggestions for going to the Sprint store with a rooted phone? Since it's a bad battery, they may not need to look at the phone once it boots. I haven't had to do this before, so I'm not sure what to expect.

if you do go to a sprint store, i would not let them keep the phone or even take it out of your sight. if that happens you may well find yourself unrooted. but thats just a guess. you can get on ebay or any other similar site and buy a cheap battery for less than $5. then if thats not the problem go from there. this same problem happened to me but luckily one of my friends also has an EVO so i just used his battery and my phone worked great. so i just bought a new battery

Thanks for the input. Headed to the Sprint store in a minute to see if a battery will solve it.

It was the battery. They tested in at the Sprint store and pronounced it DOA. They said they don't normally have spare batteries but they happened to have one, luckily. I was pretty grabby with the phone and didn't let it go for long. Once it started to boot I took it back and they never saw the Cyanogen screens.
Overall they handled it very well. I was impressed with how responsive they were. I was out of there in 10 minutes.

I'd like to get a better view on how much 6p's are affected by this issue. I really have no clue what % we're talking about. So.. Is your 6p affected by the early shutdown issue? If not, could you tell us when you've bought your phone and, if you have accubattery installed, the capacity (health) of your battery?

Sure am, and it's died at as high as 45% and as low as 15%. Accubattery pegs the health at about 60% and I've only had the phone about 15 months. Wanted this to be the first one I kept for two years.... Not looking likely with my 2 hours of SOT.

Yeah this is really bad. Fortunately, I've got a new battery in it thanks to warranty. But now I'm really afraid to use the phone. I'm waiting on a response from Google on all this before using my phone again. I've used it after repair for a couple of days to see if the problem was fixed: it was.
Can't wait for the oneplus 5 to be released.

It infuriates me because I love the phone and don't want to buy a new one.... But I can't have something that is going to die on me. I'm pretty pissed off with the state of Google hardware in general right now. Both the 5x and 6P are bootlooping and dying for no discernible reason, the Pixel and 6P have battery issues, although the Pixel, so far at least, doesn't seem to have them nearly as widespread. I feel like my phone is a ticking time bomb and that's really, really not cool.
Plus the supply issues with the Pixel all but rule that out as a replacement anyway.
I've owned three of the last four generations of Nexus phones, and while I was elated with the 6P when I got it, that glow has faded significantly. .

Yeah that ticking timebomb feeling is really annoying. I don't even dare to use the phone now it actually works, because I'm afraid that I'll f*ck up my new battery. I'm trying to wait for an official response from Google, but it's hard. I really want to know if some software f*ckup is causing these batteries to degrade faster.

I had the issue also. I bought mine in October 2015. Accubattery was showing the battery at 60% and was shutting down at random once it got below 40%. Google sent me a refurbished phone even though it was out of warranty. So far this one hasn't shut down early and accubattery shows 95%.

I got my phone mid February (Best Buy) last year and do not have the problem. Accubattery shows my battery health at 93% (3220mah). But I also protect my battery as much as possible with when to charge and never let my phone stay plugged in when topped off either.

Never had early shutdown. Had my 6p for a few months. Accubattery shows 99%.

Does the battery life itself seem to be better as well? Part of my problem is that with the screen on I'm looking at an obscene drain. According to accubattery my average drain with screen on is 1100ma/h. Hell it dropped two percent in the time it took me to type this.

Yeah the battery life is a lot better. I was doing good to get 2 hours SOT on my old phone. Same setup on this one is getting 4 to 4.5 hours SOT. I don't recall what my average drain was before but now it's about 450 ma/h. Here is a screenshot.

I may have to give that a shot then. Buying a new one really isn't in the budget right now. Did you flash back to stock or relock the bootloader before you sent it in?

Never had early shutdown, and have had my 6P since launch.... Mostly custom AOSP roms....

I'm not sure it was necessary but I flashed back to stock and relocked bootloader. I didn't want to take any chances especially since they were replacing it out of warranty. Worst case I could have used Nexus protect either way. They tried to get me to do that when I called. I refused and once I mentioned the Reddit thread they agreed to replace. Saved me the $79.00 deductible.

:good::good:We have two in our family and neither one is affected. One was purchased Late 2015 and another early 2016. Both show over 95% capacity in Accubattery (mine is 97%) and I can run the battery down to 1%. Both are stock 7.1.1 one is unlocked and rooted, and the other has never been unlocked. Although I could not vote for each phone, it will be interesting to check poll results a few months down the road.

Google's official position is that the early shutdown problem and boot loop of death are both hardware issues. People are experiencing both problems on stock Marshmallow and Nougat as well as on custom ROMs.

Just as an update, I got my RMA last week and it has behaved flawlessly since. Accubattery is actually reporting 101% battery health, and It's taking a little getting used to having a phone that the battery doesn't die in two hours.

I haven't had an issue since I got my RMAd device, so yeah. I even have all the same apps installed and everything and I'm still getting ten hours of mixed usage. Performance is getting a little pokey but the phone is coming up two years old soooooooooooo I'm not surprised.

So what's dead / dying in my 6P

This happened to me today while browsing facebook.
My phone suddenly shut down. While trying to turn on, it would get to booting screen and then shut down again. It didn't loop - I had to try each time manually.
I cleared cache and reset it to factory settings to no avail. BUT once I got back home and managed to connect it to a charger (the battery was at estimated 90% capacity), everything runs smoothly. No shutdowns, no freezes - despite the phone getting warm. I stressed it quite a lot and it seems to hold, so I don't think this is related to the "bigger" CPU.
Could it possibly be a battery issue? Could my device be misreading the actual capacity of the battery?
As a sidenote: it did crash/shutdown once I disconnected the charger, but only after 20 minutes or so when I uninstalled a running at that time app.
Any feedback will be greatly appreciated, so I have something to work with and replace stuff accordingly - and hopefully not the entire phone, as I love my 6P.

It seems like it has to be connected to the battery, as it has been now holding (presumably) at 56% charge for over 4 (!) hours. AccuBattery shows the same data as what the phone reads, and now it seems that my power drain is in negative without charging the phone.
Sadly, there are no original replacements available in my country. Only cheap 3550mAh knockoffs that sellers call OEM. They do have Huawei logo, but everyone knows that 3450mAh is the only original capacity (right?)

Update: Nearly 20 hours on the same displayed 56% capacity.

No, you are wrong. Those 3550mAh batterys are the brand new ones from huawei. Those are the newest revision of the battery. Dont get the 3450 ones. If the seller is really selling a 3450mAh one, then its probably one of the old ones with the known issues.

Thanks for the heads-up. Just out of curiosity - how do you know that? When I contacted Huawei support, they did not answer me whether the 3550mah bat is a genuine product, or a farce. They avoided that question until they force-closed my support ticket without a proper answer.

First: Because i bought one and informed myself before. Then the new battery ran better then ever before. Even better then when the nexus 6p was new. Its the new batch that is better then ever before.

The thickness of the cable does not matter that much. Something you can care about is the weight. But this is something you can check when you got the new battery and also took the old one out.
To have longer battery life dont use the original charger. Use max a 5V 2A one. For example from a older Samsung mobile phone. Those have good electrical efficiency.

For the 3 years I've bee using my 6P I never had battery life issues. In fact, even now the battery is holding well, despite the stats showing that my battery might be dying.
I came to this forum section looking for feedback on what could possibly be going on with my phone presenting the issues I am having. I am no mobile tech unlike many of guys around here. I might budge then and hope that the local Huawei repair center in my city will be of more help than the official Huawei support.

Where's my battery going?! (Phone won't sleep?!)

HELP!!!
I picked up an H918 for my wife to use on T-mobile USA. Since it was used, I also got one of the extended life 4100Mah batteries to hopefully make it last at least the entire day without topping off the charge. She usually averages around 4 - 5 hour SOT, so this seemed like a good option from what I've read, and fits in the original door so I can use the wallet case she wants with it.
But man, her battery life is TERRIBLE! I checked with Accubattery, and it reports that the battery is charging within 99% of it's 4100mah spec, so I don't think its a bad battery. Yet, she can barely go 12 hours with just under 2 hours SOT before the phone dies!
She is unrooted, running stock Oreo.
I installed GSam Battery Monitor and used their ADB commands to give it permission to record deep statistics w/out root (pretty cool, never did that before). I ran it for a little while this morning. Within 3 hours 40 minutes off the charger, she was already down to 72% with barely any SOT. I'm attaching screenshots of the app usage and doze screen (sorry for the phone-snapped-of-phone picture, it's my wifes phone like I said, so it was easier to just snap with my camera than take a screenshot and send it to myself to post).
Maybe I'm not reading this right, but it seems like something is keeping her phone from sleeping. A big culprit seems to be call services, and in my location settings, I noticed it mention that LG IMS was doing a lot of heavy battery drain with location related inquiries.
I thought maybe it was related to WiFi calling, so I turned that off. Cell reception is average.
2 hours later, she's down to 50% so that wasn't it. I don't know what else to try other than hard reset, but we literally just got this and set it up 2 days ago, and its been like this from day one. I don't see why it would be any different the second time around.

It's likely a junk battery. It's really hard to get a good oem replacement battery.
If you shop Amazon look for a Taeozi 4200 or Shemnz 4200. They both have 2 year warranty and decent reviews here on XDA
The Perfine 4100 is also highly recommend
Any Li-polymer should be better

I did my homework first and got the Perfine from Amazon, not a no-name junk battery. When I couldn't fit it without removing the sticker, the seller was really helpful and actually offered to replace it after checking first that it fit in *THEIR* V20 at the factory. Really solid customer support. And according to Accubattery, it really is the capacity it says. Or at least within 99% of it (I think it estimated 4080 or something like that). So I don't think that's the issue.

That's actually really interesting- I did take apart the phone to do the thermal mod thing (wiped off the dried up pink gunk and put a thermal pad there), but it seemed pretty clean otherwise inside when I did. How on earth did you figure out that was the problem?
After speaking with some folks on Telegram, Reddit, and other corners of the internet, I have a different theory. A bunch of people told me to let the rom "settle", that battery life is never good after a fresh format or new rom flash. Honestly, the critical thinker in me says that sounds like nonsense. I've never heard of this before and I've been flashing roms for the better half of a decade. I'd think after it takes the time the load up your apps and settings and configure itself, it would be done. But I Googled it, and it seems to be a hotly debated subject.
Those that swear by it claim that whenever you start fresh or flash a new rom, it takes anywhere from one to a few battery cycles before the kernel calms down. Perhaps it is doing some sort of internal calibration based on your battery life and system demands or something like that. The theory seems to be that the Kernel doesn't allow the CPU to fully doze until it is done with this process, which sometimes takes days. I don't know, but the more I read about it, the more it sort of started sound plausible. When I got the phone, I tried out some things on it myself without a SIM card first, just to make sure everything on it checked out before giving it to the wife. Then, I did a hard reset, popped in her SIM card and let it do its thing. That's when we realized battery life was pretty terrible, as after 10-12 hours she already needed to charge... and this was on the 4100mah perfine!
I tried another hard reset, and when that didn't fix it, I decided it was time to root and see if I could get to the bottom of the bad battery. It seemed the kernel was where a lot of it currently went according to battery stat apps. After downgrading my H918 to Nougat so I could install TWRP, I promptly flashed Alpha Omega Oreo 20H and restored her apps. Turns out the next morning we couldn't sync her smartwatch, somehow we broke bluetooth (going into BT settings would crash the phone everytime). So weird, and while we were at it the battery life still wasn't great. So I did a hard reset that evening and found that even with nothing installed, BT was borked. (looking back at it, I think I should have flashed an Oreo rom like the stock 20H rooted first, and THEN the AO rom. I think going straight from nougat might have led to a driver mismatch or something)
Anyway, after that didn't work I flashed the stock rooted 20H rom, and lo and behold bluetooth and everything else is working again! But the battery has been bad all along and is still doing its generally suckiness thing.
BUT... as someone pointed out, if this kernel settle thing is real, I've been pretty much flashing and resetting this thing every other day. If roms need to "settle" first (still a debatable subject), than I never really gave it a chance yet and that's why I'm constantly seeing battery drain from things like Kernel even on different roms! And @pistacios, is it possible that you were having a kernel do the same thing since it was just reset and it just so happened to be that when it calibrated itself you thought you had fixed it by cleaning out the USB port?
All I know is I'm going to give this a couple of days before deciding on a plan B. Seems too simple to be the reason, but hey- I'm desperate.

Then, I did a hard reset, popped in her SIM card and let it do its thing. That's when we realized battery life was pretty terrible, as after 10-12 hours she already needed to charge... and this was on the 4100mah perfine!
I tried another hard reset, and when that didn't fix it, I decided it was time to root and see if I could get to the bottom of the bad battery. It seemed the kernel was where a lot of it currently went according to battery stat apps. After downgrading my H918 to Nougat so I could install TWRP, I promptly flashed Alpha Omega Oreo 20H and restored her apps. Turns out the next morning we couldn't sync her smartwatch, somehow we broke bluetooth (going into BT settings would crash the phone everytime). So weird, and while we were at it the battery life still wasn't great. So I did a hard reset that evening and found that even with nothing installed, BT was borked. (looking back at it, I think I should have flashed an Oreo rom like the stock 20H rooted first, and THEN the AO rom. I think going straight from nougat might have led to a driver mismatch or something)
Anyway, after that didn't work I flashed the stock rooted 20H rom, and lo and behold bluetooth and everything else is working again! But the battery has been bad all along and is still doing its generally suckiness thing.
BUT... as someone pointed out, if this kernel settle thing is real, I've been pretty much flashing and resetting this thing every other day. If roms need to "settle" first (still a debatable subject), than I never really gave it a chance yet and that's why I'm constantly seeing battery drain from things like Kernel even on different roms! And @pistacios, is it possible that you were having a kernel do the same thing since it was just reset and it just so happened to be that when it calibrated itself you thought you had fixed it by cleaning out the USB port?
All I know is I'm going to give this a couple of days before deciding on a plan B. Seems too simple to be the reason, but hey- I'm desperate.

Ive experienced ROMs settling in and battery stabilizing after a few days. But this was pretty far back with the HTC M7 and M8. Most modern phone's I've flashed pretty well settled in within the first few hours. The battery life on this phone was never amazing. It was good to just Ok for most when it was new.
If you flashed the stock rooted rom and still had bad battery life, I still suspect the battery itself. I still recommend one of the battery I listed earlier. If the perfine didn't work out try a different one.

Right, with the stock 3200mah battery. With the Perfine 4100, a lot of reports are saying 6-7 hours SOT or at least a full day of regular use. That's good enough, really. Mine is dying at half of that. I'm wondering if I have faulty hardware. I could put the stock battery back in and see if it dies much sooner.
I'm actually wondering if someone can check their mA use per hour with the screen on vs off, and I can see if the numbers make sense on mine. Accubattery is pretty good at the math.

Phone was up and running for 2 weeks, so it wasn't due to fresh reset.
GSAM battery monitor showed kennel wakelock, something about USB OTG in the top of the list, so I figured the port was my first check for a problem, and it was. It wasn't obvious that there was dirt or foreign matter in there, because it looked clean. But sure enough, after the light brushing with 94% alcohol, the problem disappeared.
I'm not saying this is definitely your problem, just throwing it out there.
