Stock Visual Voicemail - Moto G5 Plus Questions & Answers

Anyone having a issue with the visual voicemail built into the phone app after the NPN25.137-93 update? I'm using retus 100% stock on MetroPCS, and not getting any voicemails. If I go into the phone settings>calls>voicemail, there is a switch to turn on voicemail, and it goes on when switched. But when you back out of it and go back into it, the switch is back off... i I hate using the MetroPCS VVM app. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

There is Visual Voice Mail built into the phone now? News to me...

There has always been. In the phone app, the 3 dots at the top left, settings, calls, voicemail

Maybe related to that "Carrier Services" app that keeps getting updated...

And I don't have it on AT&T. Bought the phone unlocked.. there is no reason it should have any carrier apps on it. AT&T doesn't sell it.
I use Google voice for voicemail anyway.. Switched years ago cuz I didn't want to pay for the at&t app back in the day.

The app in question is likely Carrier Services from Google, not from AT&T, it is part of Android... If the carrier wants 3rd party access to their VVM (or other things like VoLTE) they submit it to Google to have the services added to this file so they don't need their own custom app but use embedded Android features for their services. AT&T probably wants customers to use their app, and not use the feature build into Android, so they don't allow it in their service profile.

Not sure why I don't have it then.
Like I said.. I'm on AT&T.
I'm guessing a different third party app is the culprit.
Maybe try installing the AT&T visual voicemail app. I strongly doubt this comes from carrier services.
Edit: sorry! I misunderstood. Yes.. this is what sprint does. Sprint definitely uses the carrier app to enable VV. I thought someone was saying it worked on AT&T.. my mistake

Anyone have a fix on this? I have to go through the carrier visual voicemail app instead of Google Dialer. And if i disable that app, then voicemail goes through the old fashioned answering system.

Verizon Moto G on Page Plus

As many of you are probably aware, Page Plus has better prices than Verizon prepaid and has the same coverage. Verizon forbids the activation of prepaid devices on Page Plus until they've been used on a prepaid account for six months. I just wanted to make a post to let everyone know that it IS possible to get a prepaid phone on Page Plus. You just have to use a dealer site that doesn't check the ESN. Two examples are www.exclusivecellular.com and www.remotesquad.com. I have used both to activate iPhones and prepaid phones, both of which are not possible to activate on the Page Plus website. The remotesquad one allows free ESN swaps as well as activations. If you have bought the Verizon Moto G, please try to activate it on Page Plus. I really want to know whether or not it'll work. I'm 99% sure it will, but who knows... Verizon might have a new trick up their sleeve. It won't cost anything to activate... In fact, all Page Plus accounts come with $2 free balance.
Nope

Oh no... I've been misleading people on reddit. I was so sure this would work. Have you tried calling Page Plus and asking them to activate it? Who knows... They might do it if you don't tell them what kind of phone it is. Also please try activating a page plus account using a different phone and then using remotesquad to swap your ESN to the Moto G. If you don't have another phone, just type a random 11 or 18 digit number. Should work.
I tried this on a motox and it didn't work . Unfortunately I don't think we will get to put PagePlus on them, Verizon is in the business for making money.

Verizon wasn't even activating the phone prior to today. Today was the actual release date. Has anyone tried today at all? If not i'll post my findings after I return from my purchase.
You can if you buy it at $199.

What "unlocked version"? Is there a CDMA one? Where can you get it?
Has anyone made any progress with the G made for other carriers like Boost or U.S. Cellular? There should be fewer obstacles in getting one activated on Page Plus since they are not blocked by ESN the way the Verizon ones are
Is that really the case? I thought verizon won't activate any esn that isn't already listed in its system. Effectively the only option is doing what others are currently doing with the blocked 4g phones on page plus. That requires quite a bit of work in my opinion, and theoretically can be done just as well with the verizon moto g's that are currently blacklisted.

I had a Sprint iPhone on Page Plus. The only ESN's that are blocked by Page Plus are ones that are from prepaid phones or ones that were reported stolen

Pageplus blocks all 4g phones too. If I understood correctly, the sprint iphones require you to jailbreak, and then pretend you're on sprint while roaming on verizon. This means that its not a simple thing to activate like with a verizon phone. Likewise, I don't know if this is possible with a non-sprint phone, nor if it is possible to get the moto g to do this type of trick either. see here: http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php/1735603-sprint-phone-on-pageplus?p=14567637#post14567637
I would be glad to hear otherwise nevertheless

Wasn't the Galaxy S7/S7 Edge supposed to come with Caller ID powered by Whitepages?

Near the end of February, a lot of websites were reporting that the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge were going to come with Caller ID powered by Whitepages that would automatically look up incoming phone numbers, compare them with a scam database, and allow us to block them or report them.
I have a Galaxy S7 Edge on AT&T in the US and I don't seem to have this. There was an app called "Caller Name ID" that came with the phone, but its not free and not by Whitepages.
Pretty sure all the carriers removed it so you can pay for their own service.

Possible, but on the Whitepages website, they say:
"Whitepages is bringing its leading caller ID and spam detection service to the Galaxy S7. Coming to Galaxy S7 users in 16 countries is a seamless experience, built right into the phone (no app required!) that helps identify unknown callers and protect users-like-you against the growing nuisance of phone spam and scams."

I would assume the US would have been one of those 16 countries.

I'd assume we aren't. The cell providers here are as greedy as they come, and they all offer their own caller ID service that you can pay for so they would never give it for free.

Verizon on the G5 Plus

Has anyone activated their Moto G5 Plus with Verizon? I am wanting to do that myself but need to know if the phone is compatible with the network. Has anyone had any issues with Verizon service on their device? I would like to hear anything, even the most trivial issues. But pros are welcome as well, I'm jus more concerned about the cons. Thanks!
After rooting my phone, I just popped in my sim card from my old Verizon Note 4 to my new Moto G5+. Everything runs fine. There was no activation process. My Note 4 had a micro-sim, so I had to trim it down to nano-sim size, but that was easy.
Same, mine just worked when I popped the sim in. People are reporting bad voice quality on phone calls with VOLTE (verizon's HD voice). But you can disable that until there's hopefully a fix.

Thanks for the responses. I don't think I'll ever use VoLTE, and that issue can probably be patched with an OTA relatively easily. So I can just activate by using my old SIM? sounds deceptively easy... Does the phone automatically add APNs as well?

I believe you need a sim card. It isn't like it use to be before they had LTE. Your best bet is go to a verizon store, get a sim and have them activate it or get one online and have them do it over the phone.

Just head over to a Verizon store and buy a SIM. I recommend activating the SIM with a different phone and just putting it in the G5 when done. Big Red/Big Brother hates unlocked phones and freedom, so give 'em what they want - a Verizon-branded phone - then transfer it over.

Do keep in mind that if you switch to a custom rom, you will be unable to use Verizon's Visual Voicemail service. You'll have to rely on the stock dialer for that.
Great. Sounds like how the non Verizon pixel works on Verizon. Same deal, just need a preactivated sim. Sounds like due to the volte bug, no 4g video chat.

Wifi Calling on At&t Google Pixel 2 XL

Opened the Settings app earlier and there was a suggestion at the top to turn on Wifi calling. I'm on At&t and November update.
How did you get this to work? I've been trying to days to enable this option. I pushed "adb shell settings put global wfc_ims_enabled1" but to no avail has it worked.
I am on AT&T and have tried this with both a Google Pixel XL 2 from Google and Verizon. If you could give me any details of what your setup is like so I can try to enable this I'd dearly appreciate it!

+1 how? Very curious.
a screenshot showing the actual call going over wifi is needed.
unless ATT changed their mind in the last week, WiFi calling isnt available for the Pixel 2/XL, even if the option is enabled, the account has to be provisioned, and the phone needs the proper IMS profile, ATT to this date has refused to allow it.
This is the first I've seen the option even appear. Will test some calls and report back.

Looks like it isn't up and rolling yet, but the fact that the option appears has me hopeful. At&t still doesn't say that it supports VoLTE on P2XL, but we have that working, so perhaps Wi-Fi calling is coming soon.

Here's hoping. My apartment is on the bottom floor so reception is very spotty. What has been weird though is that if I start a call when I have reception and move to a spot in my apartment where there is no cell service, the call persists. So part of me thinks me enabling Wifi Calling from ADB may have done something?

Because idiots around the US have no idea what they're talking about then they say "VoLTE on AT&T only works with AT&T-branded Android phones or iPhones". As long as a manufacturer certifies their device with AT&T, and configure their devices with the proper IMS profile for AT&T's network, VoLTE will work. Google (HTC/LG) certified the Pixel 2 / 2 XL with AT&T for VoLTE and RCS, both of which work if all criteria are met (proper SIM card, IMEI updated in billing system, options turned on), and right now, 8.1 DP1/DP2 are needed to use VoLTE on AT&T's network, as the modem/IMS configuration was updated on the phone to support it.

VoLTE is enabled in Android 8.1 for AT&T. I just flashed the final factory image and it does indeed work. You do have to verify that your sim card is properly provisioned for VoLTE. As for the WiFi calling portion of this conversation, I still cannot access the "Wi-Fi calling" setting within "Mobile network settings."

Hi, I have the unlocked essential phone from Amazon. Can anyone on AT&T share their APN settings with me? I have already tried a few I found on Google, and tried changing some settings with that special number you put in the dialer to no avail. No matter where go I get HSPA. Nothing else.

I read it when I first got the device... It doesn't show in their system... So I still have LTE... But if I told them... I'd be screwed...

I switched from Verizon to Att and was at a store with this very same Essential phone and we activated it right there and I have no issues with LTE! Hmmm!

This is outrageous. So even if I was to submit a return for my device, and get a different unlocked phone, I would not be able to get 4G? I've used unlocked phones on AT&T & got LTE years ago!

Yeah I think something else is up. I have constantly used unlocked phones on AT&T for the past 6 years and no issues. Even now I have the Essential and I have perfect LTE. Sorry man I wish I new what was up with your device, but I don't. Only thing I can think of is maybe you have a defective device and might think about returning it or warranty repair?

I can't find the article I read... Nor the webpage that had the fine print I'm referring to...
Maybe they changed their policy... I know wifi calling and HD voice aren't available for essential... Because it's not an AT&T branded device...

I dont care about wifi calling and I don't know what HD is. But I'll tell ya what. I'm pissed. This is my third phone this year because the other two wouldn't work at all. I just sent essential an email.

My understanding of the situation is it's all Big Blue's fault... And has nothing to do with essential...

Wouldn't doubt it. Nonetheless, thanks shedding some light on the issue. Luckily my dad still pays my bill, or I'd be out of there so fast. I hate AT&T.

So APN is not the problem, now I'm gonna have to drive to AT&T & make a scene. If anyone has any more info I'd be glad to hear it. If someone did change their APN and got it to work I'd love to know.

My point is that Att knows that I have an Essential phone ( we installed the sims in the store) and in fact I have 2 of them on my account and they both use LTE. I have seen the H show up when traveling down I70 in Eastern Kansas but is almost always says LTE. Maybe I am misunderstanding the issue here. Here are my APN settings.
Edit: I also am set to Global under prefered network types. Where I live the Speed seems much faster than set on 4G/LTE from my speed tests 45Mb vs 20Mb not sure if that is scientific or not.

I have an idea tell me if you think it'll work. I just re read the thread that kinda explains this. I go back to at&t and have them put a new sim card in my old Zenfone 2, which is micro SD. It is unlocked and I had 4G working on it. Then cut the sim card and put it in the essential phone and Bam. What do you think? Or is it already in this "database"?

You mean 4G is now supported? The phone has always been supported.

Yes while you could use the device on AT&T as many of have it was not a recognized device by at&t. If you gave them your IMEI they wouldn't recognize the device as an official AT&T compatible device. Why some people like yourself don't get the full AT&T experience like LTE. That won't be an issue now. The essential PH-1 is an officially recognized device by AT&T.
So do I need a new sim now? I've been messing around with settings and still can't get 4G.
