How to remove gapps from stock ROM? (Qualcomm) - Moto E4 Questions & Answers

Hi, I'm curious if I could get the following: the stock ROM on the xt1768 US unlocked version of the phone, but I only want basically the Google stuff that's included in the Pico or Nano opengapps packages. This would entail removing all the included Google stuff from the stock ROM, installing compatible versions of the plain ol' vanilla Android versions of the apps that Google replaces (Messaging, Calendar, Browser, Launcher, etc), and then flashing one of the minimal opengapps packages on top of that.
Anyone have any insights on this or where to start? Thanks!

You should be able to remove/replace all the google apps other than chrome, the chrome homepage provider, velvet and anything other than the ones like GoogleExtShared,GoogleExtServices. Play music and google calendar and all those can go with no issues. Chrome and the others I listed can be removed, but if you do a data wipe, you'll have force closes form what I've found. I'm not sure how flashing gapps will work out. That doesn't normally work so good on stock ROMs.

Yes, they are in oem/privapp, but you can only modify oem in twrp. You also have to change some xml files. You can't just delete them.
If you're trying to get rid of all that (Google and moto apps, which will strip functionality away) why not just use a custom rom and micro g?

Why bother responding with ridicule if you weren't at least going to fully answer the question? Some people like stock without google and moto crap. Especially when there are no custom ROMs fully suitable for a daily driver for everyone.

I'm uploading flashable zips to enable the stock dialer and remove the google dialer. I'll post links shortly.

Ah yes, good point - though see the other thread wherein you and I had at it regarding WiFi calling and the fact that it isn't working on any custom ROMs yet. I'd far prefer to use Lineage.

I forgot that was you, lol. Hopefully you noticed I wasn't being rude here. I was just posing a query. And letting you know not to try to modify the oem partition unless you're in twrp, the phone will freeze if you do it while booted into Android.
P.S, you can change your nav bar buttons with a substratum theme called navigate. I have a bat symbol as my home key now. You can also use Xposed to change the location of the buttons (gravitybox). I use the systemless Xposed in magisk.

Just flashed first and third zips. Is there a way to verify that it worked? It looks exactly the same.
Also.. any way to get stock versions of keyboard, calendar, calculator, gallery, etc?

Google dialer and aosp dialer look very similar. Look in it's settings, or check the package name to confirm.

Look in oem/priv-app and see if you have a folder named GoogleDialerOEM, or something similar. It may be named different on your device, but it should be the same. If you don't see any GoogleDialer at all there, it was uninstalled. Do you see a green dialer icon in your app drawer? It's really not hard to figure out how to change those other apps you mentioned. You just need to delete the ones you don't want from /system/app or /system/priv-app and replace them with what you want. Some apps like some keyboards and galleries require additional files in /system/lib and sometimes symlinks to certain libraries to work properly. If you swap an app and get force closes that is probably why. A little tip, use this file manager: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1523691 You can just grant it root permissions and use it to copy the apps you want to system, and it will automatically set all permissions for the app, libs and all folders correctly without having to set the permissions manually. If I do much more for you, I might as well just make you a custom stock ROM.
Edit: make sure any updates for google dialer from the play store were removed. I thought I added lines to remove them no matter what they were named but I may have missed a possibility. I use a different google dialer and don't update it on the play store so I don't know exactly what it is named when it's installed to /data/app.
Edit-2: I just updated my google dialer from the play store, and the correct lines to remove it should be in the updater script of that zip. It should have removed it unless yours is named different in your oem partition.

Chill - it wasn't ridicule by any reasonable reading. And since when is "fully answer the question" a prerequisite to responding with relevant thoughts in a public thread? An opinion was volunteered; take it or leave it.

Custom ROMs for Yoga Tablet 2?

I'll be looking to root my tablet soon, but are there any custom ROMs for the Yoga tablet 2?
Hi,
I'm searching also for custom ROMs for my Lenovo Yoga 2 (1050F), because it would be a good start to build a custom ROM for Marshmallow (6.0). I would like to get the new "Doze" standby feature, because it's perfect to save battery for tablets.
There are some instructions to root the tablet, but I haven't luck to find a custom ROM. Has somebody found a custom ROM?
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Nova

Add me to the list. I'd love a custom ROM for the Yoga 2 Tablet pro. Get rid of the bloat and speed it up.

it always wonders me... why a custom rom? or more exactly what is a custom rom?
if only the bloat is the problem (and i guess you cannot uninstall on normal interface) then open a shell (as root) and try playing with the package manager tool pm
on my 1380f i have disabled these packages:
com.lenovo.weather.theme.dreamlandPad
com.lenovo.deskclock
com.lenovo.lenovodaydream
com.lenovo.paperdisplay
com.google.android.play.games
com.google.android.apps.messaging
com.lenovo.fingerpaint
com.lenovo.videoplayer
com.lenovo.anyshare.gps
com.google.android.youtube
com.lenovo.lps.cloud.sync.row
com.google.android.music
com.google.android.talk
com.google.android.apps.magazines
com.google.android.apps.genie.geniewidget
com.lenovo.email
com.google.android.apps.docs
com.google.android.apps.books
sure thing you can disable more or not so many as i did
to view a list of all your packages:
pm list packages
the command to disable is
pm disable package_name
if you want them back enable
pm enable package_name
to completely uninstall
pm uninstall package_name
but you should play with enable and disable only imo, and after i disable a package i leave it there (i don;t unintall, it's only a dead apk file now, and not that much space)
take care the command can and will break your tab if improperly used (it basically doen;t limit you at anything)
you can play with these two to see what your tablet will behave, also watch the logcat *:E for errors, you get the ideea, don't just disable and expect good things to happen (with what i have disabled my tab is basically "lenovo free")
my tablet is clean as my wallet is after a long night

Thanks for the tip, man! I just found out they'd updated the UI and the new one is sooo much more pleasing. What I didn't like before was how uncustomizable the standard interface was. Also, I could not play Hearthstone on it. But now it's so much cleaner and I've disabled all the unnecessary bloat as per your recommendation. :highfive:
i have a LENOVO YOGA Tablet 2 Pro 1380F.
So there will never be a Release from CyanogenMod for the device?
and add me to the list
All,
I've posted about my forthcoming Yoga Tab 2 830F ROM. Called SleepyBear. Please check in Thinkpad General and come show your support.
I'll have a test ROM on deck this weekend. I need some testers.
The challenge is that we don't have native recovery. I've been using tethered CWM which works fine on identical models.
More to come. If you can test, PLEASE let me know

You can also enable/disable system apps via Titanium Backup. This would be a much safer means of trial and error. Uninstalled apps that cause instability can be restored tout suite

@ionioni - In my experience, most custom ROMs are usually built to create a faster, more power efficient and lean system. In the case of my ROM (SleepyBear), it contains a modified init.d with a host of performance enhancements: fstrim (recover space and increase file access), sqlite (group file history and tasks in a faster queue), cache reclaim (often frees up 400-600MB of RAM without disturbing the active system) and weekly cleanup tasks (e.g. Dalvik cache).

Is there an EASY way to customize the color of the icons in the status bar?

I like the customization that can be done in the MOAR ROM to the status bar icons but I like running the deodexed version of the stock ROM on my phone. Is there an easy method to gain access to change colors and maybe change the symbols in the icons on the status bar?

There are several Xposed modules that can modify the statusbar and some of the icons, but I'm not sure if any can actually use custom icons.
GravityBox, Wanam, and I think XBlast. Choose one, because they have a lot of overlap. My favorite is GravityBox because it allowed me to get my beloved left corner "menu" button back instead of the ridiculous "recents", which I kept activating because I've pressed that button for the menu thousands of times over the years.

You always need to install Xposed framework to run Xposed modules.
You need to use a deodexed ROM. It can be a stock-based ROM, but it must be deodexed.
Linked here is the version of xposed you need to flash: http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...od-og5-ok3-t3290370/post65280322#post65280322

Oy! So I finally found the xposed installer in arter97's thread. I have the installer "installed". How do I install the snapdragon framework zip?
Oy! The learning curve! Ok so the installer automatically adds the framework. When I go to the gravitybox LP module, it says NOT for TW. Do I just ignore this?
NVMD. I loaded wanam instead.
I gave you a post with a direct link to the version of Xposed you needed to use....
Yes, I ignored the warning and GravityBox worked just fine for me (but I'm still using Android 4.4.4)

The link was just for the framework version. I needed the Installer part too.
GB probably would work, but the wanam already had lollipop users talking about it, so I went that way.

Ah.
Wanam and GravityBox are both good. I chose the latter because I really wanted my menu button back, and Wanam didn't do anything I needed that GravityBox didn't also do. It's a matter of personal preference. I am curious if GravityBox works well on Lollipop, though...

It should be the LP one.
If that's somehow wrong, the worst case from an incompatible Xposed module is a bootloop, and you fix that by getting into Safestrap, choosing file explorer, and creating a file called "disabled" in /data/data/de.robv.android.xposed.installer/conf/
Alternately, there's a flashable zip file somewhere that puts the "disabled" file where it needs to be
Then you reboot, get into Xposed and turn off the offending module. Then use a file explorer to go delete that "disabled" file and reboot.
If you run Wanam and GravityBox simultaneously, you'll probably end up with two battery icons next to each other, but there shouldn't be any catastrophic effects.

Is there a specific installer needed for S5 Lollipop? I guess I assumed that zip was the installer. Can you link the one you used?

That one might be hard to pin down...
I don't see anything in my KitKat version that seems to pertain to network or ad blocking.
If you disable GB and reboot, does the problem disappear?

Oneplus launcher on Nexus 6p

Oneplus's most recent beta update introduced an update to oxygenos's launcher which made it look and feel almost exactly the same as the pixel launcher. Which got me wondering for us 6p users with the death of Google now launcher could we get this running? Many may be asking why not just use the pixel launcher well one massive reason native icon pack support. (Not the biggest fan of nova) so this seems the best option for me personally any help would be appreciated

I will just add that this apk has been installed and crashes when i attempt to open it. It has also been installed into root directory with the same outcome any suggestions?

Did you try going it to app settings and granting it all permission? On 7.1.2 stock it hangs slightly longer before crashing, could do that then clear the cache and see if it starts up

I also tried that someone suggested the app force's a crash itself when it detects it's not running on a oneplus 3/3t but i doubt oneplus would bother building this in.

Seriously, how far did you get? Could a custom ROM build in the support for the OP launcher? I don't want to start the investigation from scratch

They spread their links everywhere in it. Haven't loaded but checked some files in it.
I eveb remove samsung links in my browser but they put theirs in it. As I remember they even add their logo as watermark in photos. (Not sure but I remember that there is codes related to that in their cameradata folder)
Best is BlackDiamond for now (for me) I manually debloat it and made some uodates and changes.
Using it with arianoxx kernel v5. Battery lasts 2 days (I have a new battery) no lags, no bugs etc.

Really? They put custom watermarks and logos?? I hate it too but last time I checked they only put a default wallpaper to system called teamexykings. What they do best is have minimal bugs compared to other roms. I guess it's about preference. I like pure stock bloatfree

OP Dialer replacement???

I am looking for an open source dialer replacement for the OOS dialer.
I thought either Emerald dialer or Simple Contacts would fit the bill only to find out they are overlay dialers AFTER I deleted my OOS dialer. OOPS! Overlays only work with a real dialer. =(
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance, JC

I have been using a patched version of the Google phone app with no problems.
I think it's posted in the Android Q patched boot img thread

If it is Google, I doubt it is open source.
I should have mentioned I am on Pie. Not going to install 10 until all the bugs that are plaguing so many get fixed.
I found the Lineage OS dialer apk and the file it needs to work, however, neither will install on my phone. Not sure why. I gave my file explorer root privileges.

If you have any interest in the patched Google Dialer it works on Android 9 as well. I have been using it on my 6T over a year now.
I've used the patch version, but it was glitchy. I recently found a Google phone go apk on apkmirror.com that works quite well. Get an error message that it isn't compatible with the phone every now and then, but the app works great. Here's the link: https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/googl...phone-40-0-275948326-go-android-apk-download/

You don't have to install a special patched Google Dialer version. All you need is the Google Dialer Framework module from Magisk to make it work. Install the module, reboot, and then go to Play to grab latest Google Dialer.... or Apkmirror.com to grab an even later beta-version.

The APK I referenced works without root or any other changes necessary. Just a simple app install.

Okey? That was not my point... with the Google Dialer Framework module via Magisk, you can then do any Google Dial version installaation. I don't think it requires root (well, I'm rooted so i don't know for sure).
Leave it if your´re not happy with my answer.
Thanks guys, but, unless Google is using an AOSP open source dialer without googling it up, I am not interested in anything Google.
Many apologies, I assumed "open source" in my OP would have made that clear.

My only point is that you don't need root for it to work. Magisk by definition is root isn't it? If I'm wrong, I'm sorry, but only point I'm making.
You're reminding me why I don't comment on these posts any more.

My fault actually, I thought you just wanted to replace the OOS dialer with a good working replacement
As many had issues with the OOS dialer on Android Q.
I didn't really think anything AOSP worked correctly in OOS without a lot of work
