Procuring original Stock ROM from Motorola - X Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello XDA-mates !
I own a Moto X Play 32 GB, Dual Sim - XT1562. I had unlocked the bootloader, Flashed TWRP and rooted using SuperSu, all is well.
I no longer wish to have an unlocked bootloader and root and wanna fallback to Stock ROM with Locked bootloader.
Which as per my knowledge can be done by flashing a stock Rom.
The problem now is I am not able to find it in Motorola's portal / repository, and customer care was of no help.
Coming to the questions now..
- Is it necessary to flash Entire ROM package or would just flashing the recovery and bootloader by extracting it from the compressed package work as I am already on Stock ?
- Has Motorola provided Rom's For XT-1562 at-all ? (not XT-1563, its there for XT-1563)
- How can I trust Stock ROM's available on XDA forums or Github, there is no authentication / checksum ( MD5 / SHA #) nor information about the source / origin of those files.
- How did the up-loader's get those files ?
- How can I get those ROM files ? while OTA updates download ? How ?
Thank you for going through the post

First u need to know that, once u relock the bootloader, u can't able to unlock it and even if u relock the bootloader, u can't rid of bootloader unlocked warning (it can be hide by flashing custom bootlogo)
My suggestion is that don't worry leave it unlocked and flash custom bootlogo that can hide bootloader unlocked warning.
After do that, If u want flash stock rom, just skip logo.bin file.
There is so many nougat roms for MXP, u should try one of them.
Flash this file from AnoopKumar's thread, this can hide the bootloader unlocked warning.
Fastboot command: (fastboot flash logo logo.bin)
Mfastboot command: (mfastboot flash logo logo.bin)

I have never tried relocking but "fastboot oem lock" seems to lock in most cases.
And also, " fastboot oem unlock <UNIQUE_KEY_FOR_YOUR_DEVICE>" unlocks it and once the key is obtained it should be reusable!
Though I would request the veterans to comment on it.

I won't comment on your security concerns but I used this repository https://github.com/motoxplay/stock and it seems to work out for my Moto X play XT1562 Dual Sim 16 GB model. I am an active user of the XT1562 ROM on 7.1.1 and Build no. NPD26.48-24-1 for Asia and Dual sim. No apparent security issues faced!

Would be awaiting for more answers..
Thank you Smyaknti,
Currently I have installed Lineage, loving it.
But have downloaded the Roms from Github for any urgent future necessity.
It's strange was checking Asus site they provide all software stuff easily, even kernel source..
Wondering have I not searched enough ? they must have provided it some where... only then custom kernels were made right.. so Roms, Kernel's would be available somewhere, maybe in some specific region or some moto dev portal..

[INFO/TIP] Web sites for official and LEAKED roms..

This post/thread is to summarize where to find full SBF files, leaks, etc for the Moto X (2013 or First Generation).
REMEMBER... Always flash the same ROM/SBF or Newer to your phone. NEVER attempt to downgrade your rom!!! for more info, see DOWNGRADING
Motorola posts their complete STOCK "Recovery Images" (aka SBF files) for the GSM and Verizon Developer Edition X at -> https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/recovery-images
If you have the Retail and/or Moto Maker XT1053 (aka Unlocked ships with T-Mobile SIM, or Unlocked Ships with Net10 SIM), you can also use the GSM Developer Edition (XT1053) roms from Moto's site.
If you have the Retail and/or Moto Maker Verizon X (XT1060), you can also use the Verizon Developer Edition (XT1060) roms from Moto's site.
There might be a delay in Moto making an SBF available.
For other models of X, I know of 3 sites for "leaks" which contain the SBF files for nearly every model of X (2013). You may need to check EACH site to find the particular rom you are looking for. NOTE: None of the following sites are owned, operated, or sponsored by Motorola. They may be down or offline at any time, without warning.
http://sbf.droid-developers.org/ <- DEAD when checking on 8/22/15
http://www.filefactory.com/folder/dd05c058d3ff8dbe/?sort=created&order=DESC&show=100&page=1 <- seems to have the most 4.4.4 roms
http://motofirmware.com/files/category/9-ghost/ <- DEAD when checking on 8/22/15 once there, look under the GHOST folder. (as of 11/9/2014, its format and access has changed)
http://motofirmware.center/files/ <- Select Moto X 1St Generation from the list along the right side of the page
Are there any others?
@dagoban has linked a few other in Post #17 of this thread..

As 5.1 SBF files become available, they are being collected and curated in this thread -> [OFFICIAL] Collection Full Firmwares (FXZ/SBF) Lollipop 5.1
FAQ:
1. How do I know which file to download?
- If you are NOT running a 3rd Party or Custom ROM... take a look on your phone, under App Drawer -> Settings... Make note of what is listed under System Version, Android Version, and build number. Then visit one (or all) of the sites until you find the SBF that matches. The file name will usually contain parts or all of that info listed under settings, and possibly the carrier name, or acronym for the carrier name (Verizon might be VZW, Rogers Canada might be RCI, etc).
Normally I would suggest BEFORE you flash away from Stock, on the phone you first go App Drawer -> Settings -> About Phone... Make note of what is listed under System Version, Android Version, and build number. Then visit one (or all) of the sites until that host the leaked SBF files until you find the SBF that matches and down load the file to your PC for use later.. The file name will usually contain parts or all of that info listed under settings, and possibly the carrier name, or acronym for the carrier name (Verizon might be VZW, Rogers Canada might be RCI, etc).
So for example: If your phone model is XT1058 and under about phone it reports...
android version is 4.4.4
system version is 212.44.26. ghost_row.RCI.en.ca
build nunber is KXA21.12-L1.26
That tells me you have a Rogers Canada (RCI) XT1058 with 4.4.4 ROM on it. When you look at the file factory site for your SBF, you want to look for a file that contains some/all of that info, like... XT1058_RCI-CA_4.4.4_KXA21.12-L1.26_59_cid14_CFC_1FF.xml.zip
(notice the parts of the "about phone" info and file name which are highlighted in Bold to help illustrate the example)
IF you are already running a CUSTOM or 3Rd party rom, like CM, system version and build number will not match STOCK Moto SBF files
2. Where do all these SBF files come from?
As mentioned earlier, Moto does make the Dev Edition "recovery images" (in SBF format) available on their web site. For all others, the only way for us to get firmware files, is for a copy to be LEAKED to us.. The "Leaked" firmwares are files that are basically "stolen" by a Motorola or wireless carrier employee, who then posts the file on the internet for us... So we can't always count on this ever happening, nor can we have any expectations that a particular firmware will actually get leaked, or when it will be leaked.
There is some talk about using Motorla Device Manager (MDM) app to upgrade your phone, and how during the update process, the app downloads the full FXZ (another term for SBF) to your PC, so it could be copied/saved to another folder for use later. I have not done this with MDM.
EDIT: As of 12/12/14, Only the filefactory.com link is working. The others appear to be down. I don't know the owners of the sites, so I can't say if they will return or not.
EDIT2: As of 1/2/15, motofirmware.com seems to be back up, but sbf.droid-developers.org appears to be gone.
Great info! ??
SBF is my first choice, but when I needed the 4.4.4 retail firmware not found it in SBF, I had to turn to Google and found it.
FTP of Moto Firmware is empty, but the File Factory folder has many versions! Very cool.
if my firmware is currently 4.2.2, can I download the 4.4.2 or 4.4.4 firmware and it would fix a soft brick with 4.2.2? or must i find the 4.2.2 firmware in order to fix the issues?

I'm not sure what problem you encountered is.. If it is truely "soft bricked" first start by booting the phone to APFastboot/Booloader screen and use fastboot or mFastboot on the PC to erase the phone's cache then try to reboot.
If that doesn't work, generally to recover from any issues, if you can boot into APFasboot/Booloader, check the version on the second line, then download and flash the appropriate ROM version, you can recovery from most soft brick scenarios.
30.70 = original 4.2.2
30.71 = 4.2.2 OTA with camera update
30.B2 = 4.4
30.B4 = 4.4.2
30.B7 = 4.4.4
Once on 4.4.2, 4.4.3 or 4.4.4, NEVER flash an older version ROM!!!
On occasion, you need to use mfastboot, and do a few extra commands (See Option 5 at -> http://mark.cdmaforums.com/MotoX-ReturnToStock.html )
If you have any questions, please search and see if any threads with your phone's symptoms already exist then post in that thread. If a thread doesn't already exist, start a new one, and post any details of what phone you have (model, carrier), what the symptom is, and what was done leading up to the symptom appearing. The more details you can supply the better.

well issue was I was rooted with twrp and silly me I tried to do the ota update. so now it won't get past the warning about unlocked bootloader. I read after the fact that you needed to revert back to stock before taking ota. mine is 30.71, but the other issue is I cannot find that firmware anywhere. my only option in regards to firmware is to use 4.4.2 that I found. I've posted the question here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2542219&page=123

BUT if you tried to take the OTA while TWRP was on your phone, just boot into fastboot mode on the phone, and do a mfastboot erase cache will get you out of the bootloop. Then you can flash stock recovery on there, take the ota.
Or you can just flash the 4.4.2 or 4.4.4 for your phone, when completed, flash TWRP on there, reboot hte phone to bootloader, enter Recovery/TWRP and root.
Yes, You can flash a higher/newer version without problems. You just can't flash older once 4.4.2 or higher has been flashed to your phone. (the only time its safe to flash older was when you had 4.4 on your phone, and you were Following the SlapMyMoto process to downgrade to 4.2.2. W/Camera Update as part of the process).
Thank you for this!

Getting a Moto X VZW dev ed in a few days, and while it may never apply to me, I had his same question.
I understand what you said, but it doesn't really address the issue of if it is OK to use these images to flash to a later version...
I am aware of the risks of flashing to older firmwares, but are their risks to flashing NEWER updates? I have seen people go as far as to recommend flashing the current version first to recover, then updating... But is this necessary?

U can always flash newer images without a problem. It's flashing older images (downgrading) that's a problem.

The OTA updates are incremental, so you need to be on a certain level to take them. (to take 4.4.4 you need to be on 4.4.2, to take 4.4.2 you need to be on 4.4, etc)
Full SBF/FXZ files are complete roms. They are not incremental like the OTA Updates are. When flashing a FULL SBF/FXZ you can just flash it, so long as its the same version OR newer than what is on your phone, with no need to "step up." In other words, if you have 4.4 on your phone, you can flash directly to 4.4.4 using the full 4.4.4 SBF, without having to flash 4.4.2 on there first.
The risks to keep in mind would be, just like any update...
If you have a locked bootloader, the vulnerabilities exploited to root and disable write protection might be patched in the newer roms, that means you might not be able to root, or the processes may change for the newer rom. However, with an unlocked bootloader, there is no issue rooting and disabling write protection (lollipop is yet to be confirmed).
In either case, since you can't safely downgrade, if you find bugs, other issues (battery life, reception, etc), or there is something you don't like about the rom, you're stuck, since you can't safely downgrade.

9 is the latest firmware for the US model. im not sure what the very bottom one "harpia" is for?
I have bought mine unlocked and it is "retus". It has the MPJ 24.139-48 fw. Radio is M8952_70009.08.03.45R ATHENE_RETUSA_CUST.
If I check the update it says it's up-to-date.

Thanks everybody for helping out. Please continue to write more info about the US XT1644 as there is not alot in on this model.

yup but .9 is the latest. it has fixes for battery and the phone. i flashed it via fastboot on my XT6144 and it works great.
Well, the -49 (not 9) it's not to be found on Moto US website or OTA, it just appeared here like magic and the change log (supposedly) here. So I am not sure about it's provenience and that the fixes are not a placebo.
Anyway, I understand the "itch" to install it. Because I am so tempted myself
LE: Well, I did it. Flashed the MJP24.139-49 on my XT1644, I am restoring the apps now from backup.
Are these TWRP flashable or fastboot?
Yes, fastboot is avail after you unlock the bootloader on Motorola site (loosing the warranty).
I have booted into TWRP to root (SU systemless method), but didn't actually flash it (because I don't plan to switch to CM at this point).

I'm already on CM but there's the bug preventing me from receiving calls unless I turn off LTE. I'd prefer to not lose root and don't have access to a PC, so if I can wipe and flash this in TWRP, that would be perfect.
No, you can't, you need the standard recovery to get back to stock. Then you can root as I said.
As for CM13, I had used it (beta and after that nightlies) on one of my previous devices (Asus, based on Snapdragon 615, 64 bit, 3GB RAM)... but it was too unstable to use as a daily phone. Always something to be "fixed" and very often something else was breaking. Disappointed...
Security Patch Level
Can someone who has flashed the -49 build confirm what the security patch level is? Just wondering if it's the same update India and Europe received OTA.

And, does someone know how to create the rom using newest ftf available?

yes i have flashed this firmware on sov33 and it turned out good.. except of nfc every thing smooth and 100% stable.
but i would like to inform you all that
do not try to flash Oreo firmware directly on sov33 via flashtool, because it is damaging the device just like i have, i tried nougat f8131 on sov33 staying on stock nougat and device was running faboulis but then after few days i tried oreo downloaded from internet of f8131 and tried to flash,
flashing went well for about 98% and then it is showed flashing completed 100% but with error, bootloader file error was there
and then my set is dead
it is booting into fastboot mode but it cannot boot into flashmode
and cannot even boot to stock rom
only black dead screen

Can you flash this Rom?

Any tutorial on how to update your bootloader ver.?

Hello so I tried to install a recent Rom and I get an error like this " This package supports bootloader(s) 0xA050, 0xA052; this device has bootloader 0xA048 " Any help pointing me in the right direction (tutorials/post) on this matter. BTW I did a search on the section in this site could not find anything.
Thanks in advance
A little more info would be helpful. What model, baseband, and/or stock system version were you on before trying to flash? What ROM were you trying to flash? Just based off what little you have given you need to "upgrade" but knowing specifics allows for pointing you in the right direction.
One thing to note is that there is a lot of discussion on XDA regarding bootloader issues during a flash. Most are involved with ROMs developed for the stock MM baseband vs stock nougat and their incompatibilities. There are some caveats and limitations you need to read up on before you proceed. A Google search for your error with the word XDA should net you quite a bit of what you need to know.

No problems. Enjoy and Happy Holidays to everyone.
Before anyone calls me on it, I know the reply is late.
The ROM in question is likely Optimized Lineage OS, as it has a bootloader check in its install script to prevent installs on incompatible bootloaders, i.e. the Android 7.x bootloader. The OP could have found this out for himself however just by searching the development thread for the ROM he's trying to install. As to updating the bootloader itself, unless someone has extracted the bootloaders from the official ROM updates, taking an OTA is the only way to change the bootloader. Otherwise, flashing a new bootloader using fastboot using the command "fastboot flash bootloader bootloader.img", where bootloader.img is the name of the bootloader file, should work.

Nokia 6.1 plus - downgrade from android Pie to Oreo? / Flashing stock firmware?

I updated to android Pie on my Nokia 6.1 plus TA-1103. It's too buggy and I don't like it a bit! Downgrading to Oreo "over the air" method via Nokia beta labs doesn't work for my carrier.
I see that official Oreo firmware is available for download. Is there any way to flash it back now when I am currently on Android 9.0 ?

These are definitely the zips of stock ROM. But these are designed to take you forward and not backward (unless a specially designed package is pushed by the company). So, your only means to downgrade is via Nokia Care channels or paid downgrade services available online.

It is the same for all WW variants of the device. So, you can flash any WW firmware if your bootloader is unlocked. Otherwise it is not possible to flash on your own.

Hi mate, PM me if your bootloader is unlocked and I can go though the steps to downgrade to 8.1
I've been shown how to do it and its tried and tested & working well.
If your bootloader is locked, then search for the paid service to unlock it. He will also downgrade it at the same time.
Nokia X6 with Custom Oreo ROM - How to load stock Android Pie 6.1 plus image
Hi,
I bought a Nokia X6 in September 2018 (6GB/64GB) and would like to install the Stock Nokia 6.1 Plus Android 9 image.
I see my phone is rooted and it shows the message "Your device has loaded a different operating system." everytime I start it and I have to use Magisk to hide several banking applications.
The phone works great and I knew it was going to be relased in Europe eventually, but I am scared to brick it by loading the Android 9 Image.
I already tried attempting the update through OTA but the zip file is ignored. Nothing happens.
I am new to this forum so I don't know if my question has been asked by someone else.
Can you please help me?
Thank you!
- - - Since I am reading that Pie is not that good, I would be happy to stay with Oreo as long as I can use stock and unroot. Have you got any tips for it? ---

How can I find out if it is unlocked? Also, can you please point me to the right firmware? I have the TA-1099.
I believe the rooted it to install the custom Oreo rom as the Nokia 6.1 Plus had not been released when I purchased the Nokia X6. I actually paid £ 100 less because of this

It won't need root to install a different official ROM. The flash tools for internal usage don't need root.
You can check the device's bootloader status using Fastboot commands. Make sure fastboot drivers are installed. Then put your Nokia in Download mode. After that use the following command:
fastboot oem device-info

I downloaded ADB and fastboot, along with the latest Nokia X6 USB Drivers.
I am following the guide here : https://www.getdroidtips.com/nokia-6-1-plus-stock-firmware/#The_Advantage_ofStock_Firmware and I would like to avoid having the original X6 firmware (chinese) and use the 6.1 plus instead, but not sure which one.
Also, what is in your opinion the best XDA post I can follow for the upgrade? Is the one above ok? I just need to unroot my device and install the stock 6.1 Plus Oreo (or Pie if is getting better) making sure it will work with my Vodafone and Three UK Sim Card (which are working fine for now).
Thanks again

Actually, it depends on what condition your device is in right now. If the bootloader is unlocked (fastboot oem device-info), then you will be able to install the global firmware.
On the other hand if the device has a locked bootloader, then a tutorial alone won't help. You'll need to buy a remote flashing service to flash the global ROM onto the device. The flash tool needs to gain the flash permission from FIH servers to gain a temporary elevation to flash files to a locked bootloader.

Hi,
I followed this guide to go into fastboot mode: https://www.hardreset.info/devices/nokia/nokia-x6-2018/fastboot-mode/
When I do, I can only see "Download mode" on the top left and the big logo "powered by Android", that's it.
Is that correct or?
I allowed my bootloader to be unlocked, for the developer options, but I don't seem to find a way to boot in fastboot mode. I will try volume up + powerbutton shortly.

The download mode = fastboot mode. So, you reached the right place.
The developer option setting has no use on a Nokia phone. It just does nothing. But since you're seeing that option, your bootloader is most likely still locked. If you are on July or an older Android Security patch, then you can unlock the bootloader by buyng an unlock key. After that you can unlock it and then flash the global firmware.

Hi, yes I think so at this point. I am on May security patch and it does not show any new updates when I check. I am thinking to unroot it at this point and keep it with Android 8.1 unrooted, but I am not sure I will get the updates from Nokia.
What do you think?
Thanks for your reply and I hope all this information is useful to the other members of the forum.
Update: I just bought the unlock code and waiting for it. I will let you know how it goes.
Downgrade from Android 9 to Android 8
Hello!
I downloaded this file: https :// drive.google.com/uc?id=1BUR6xrbgbVlMQDyHz6oXZpmPrlRuFYgY&export=download
from this forum: http: // forum.gsmdevelopers.com/nokia-android-phones/72857-nokia-6-1-plus-ta-1083-exclusive-tasted-firmware-ch_sameer.html
and apparently it's possible to downgrade from Android 9 to Android 8. The file contains the OST LA program and the stock ROM for TA-1083 (DRG-237B-0-00WW-B05) in .nb0 format. The program asks for user and password, but I read somewhere that it's possible to patch it or edit it with Notepad++. I'm new to this and I don't know how to use the program.
Can someone more experienced test this method and report back, please?

You cannot crack/patch OST LA. The patched version will work on bootloader unlocked devices only. For the others, there's no way to flash without having the login to server with account.
