Its because the big 3 have a monopoly on the mobile phone business in Canada! We pay damn near the highest for cell phones in the world. We're at their mercy and nothing will ever change that and they know it.

We pay big bucks to the big 3 that is why they can get away with this. If somehow we stopped paying them you will see how they will beg for customers.

Looks like a new update was just released ARA1 about to install it.
Its the january update.

Yeah I'm on the Bell network and just got the January security patch yesterday

I am on october security patch. I think we may get oreo in March - April. I even wonder why people still buying Samsung devices.

If 2.1 is suppose to hit Aug 15, one would think SE would make the announcement already. One point six isn't that great of a selling point when most of the other phones have 2.1 or higher.

Why the 15th?
If there's a major SE event that date there might be something to it, August is in the third quarter.
The only major event is that they are releasing the X10 in the U.S. But they already stated it will be coming with 1.6
They are not just going to slip 2.1 in without telling us. We'll know when it's coming in due time.

Since most of SE's sales come from outside North America (I have no official figures, just stating logically) where their phones are bought for the actual cost and not subsidized by the carriers, I don't think that it really is such a big event for them. The world doesn't revolve around us ya know...

Yep, I have been a week in London and I was surprised to find so few cell phones shops (generic shops I mean, not operator shops). That was a bit weird as in Italy cell phone are sold almost anywhere (not by the butcher, though) and only a small percentage is tighten to a carrier contract.
vodafone in Australia looks pretty nice you pay 0 for the phone and $79 a month. I dont know if thats normal there but 0 for the phone looks like a good deal.

Rogers released it for 149. in the beginning.
I think this aug 15 thing is a false statement. They would have said something about it if it was true.
August 15th is the official release date for the Xperia X10a in the U.S.
Android 2.1 update will not be released until Q1 2011...
LoL @ anyone thinking that Sony Ericsson would actually release anything ahead of schedule.
If anything they will delay the release of the firmware for 2 weeks for for 1 month.
Don't expect the firmware to be released any sooner than November.

it was pushed backed again at least for ATT in America. Im not too sure about the rest of the world. Hopefully that is not the case.
Looks like everybody is trying hard for 2.1 update by coming out with new thread lol.
As per 2.1 update, it's going to come in September. I spoke to SE guy yesterday in Mumbai, India and looked like he was pretty sure about it. Just wait for few weeks and we'll get it.
I work for Sony and that's what we were told... like i said this is probably only relating to AT&T U.S. not everywhere else...
The devs need to get that bootloader cracked ASAP! lol

$0 upfront is pretty standard here. the handset repayments are included in the monthly bill, until you start getting the the expensive plans where they make the money back through the plan. having said that, I'm pretty fond of mine. i'm on a $0 upfront $59 cap + $10 handset repayments. gets me $300 of calls, unlimited national text and mms free youtube, FB and myspace +2GB.
back OT, i'm waiting on september (or later, carrier dependent)

Question about the Xoom US version

Hi,
I read that Xoom will be released in US on February 24, 2011 by "Best Buy".
Is this the "Verizon" version?
If I import that to Europe (The Netherlands), can I use it here?
Have the same question.
Really want the XOOM. Only problem is that i live in Sweden and will probably have to wait forever for the XOOM to be launch.
If i decide to buy XOOM from USA will it work here in Sweden/Europe?
Is it locked to Verizon?
Sent from my GT-P1000
In all likelihood, yes. So far I don't think there has been any info released as to whether the device will be required to be purchased on a contract, so if not, you can always import one.
Otherwise, I'd wait for the wifi-only version, which I am sure will be coming.
the only thing im worried bout is if its going to be CDMA only when it comes to import
if its going to get a wifi only version i dont see why not.
unless it gets a wierd charger that only works on 150v
There is a wifi only version.. should be in best buy later this month.
what's your source?^^^
I have heard about their being a wifi version but I doubt it will be out at the same time as the verizon version. I would imagine Verizon would ask Moto to hold off so that they can gain as many subscribers as possible
Yupe, and I hate when I read in the news today ... The wifi will be locked first until you purchase 1 month data subscription!
http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/06/verizon-locking-wifi-on-motorola-xoom-until-you-buy-one-month-of/
I doubt the wifi only will be very near soon ... I predict around june or july release here in Europe. While then, probably HTC tablet or LG have already hit the street.

USA - May 24 Announcement, potentially all carriers!!!!!

May 24, New York City
androidcentral.com
almost exactly 11 months after this
intomobile.com
I am sensing SUNDAY June 12th AT&T release of Samsung Galaxy Attain (almost 11 months after the Captivate)!!!
How long was it from when they made the announcement last year did the Galaxy S actually go on sale on AT&T?
Here you go, last years dates I posted earlier
kreoXDA said:
Do you guys remember how the first Galaxy was introduced on the 4 carriers last year?
Let me remind you
June 4th - first release in Asia
June 29th - launch party in New York City where it was first announced that 4 models were coming to 4 carriers, with no dates. (+25 days)
Later on, gradually, release dates were being announced about 1-3 weeks prior to a particular release. The phone was released as follows:
T-Mob - July 15th (+41 days)
AT&T - July 18th (+44 days)
Sprint, keyboarded CDMA version - August 30th (+87 days)
Verizon, CDMA version - September 9th (+97 days)
We learned that SGS1 was even coming to the United States 3.5 weeks after the phone was released in Asia.
The quickest provider T-Mob got it almost 6 weeks after the first country.
The slowest provider VZW - 3 months after.
So give this some time, sit back, relax, wait for bug reports from the UK beta testers , and enjoy your fixed (or maimed) version in a few short weeks.
peace

Note the US Launch party last year was 25 days after first international release, and this event is around 25 days after Korea/UK release
lol after dealing with the ATT Craptivate for a year I'll gladly "beta test" the vanilla samsung GS2
good luck with your carrier updates. I'm done purchasing US phones "variants" that force you to use reorient kernels for the Roms.
Thanks for the release date info. Looks like they're following a similar schedule... just bumped ahead 1 month from last year =)
Still, as much as I'd like to wait for a US variant... I don't really want to have to sign a contract to get one, nor do I want to put up with the bloatware and filth they put on the phone. Rooting and flashing ROMs on my T-mobile spec Galaxy S was annoying, having to ODIN back to certain firmwares before being able to flash a new ROM.
And the one question that I'm still wondering... will the US be getting a tegra version? That would suck =(

i've been off contract since Dec. i had originally settled on getting the Infuse when it was first announced but instantly fell in love with the SGS2 and decided to wait. but... i need a new phone NOW. actually i needed a new one 2 months ago but decided to hold strong for the SGS2... but it's come to a point where my current phone is damn near unusable, so i think i'm going to get the infuse when it launches and roll the dice on the sgs2 coming out before the remorse period ends. or failing that just give it back and wait some more for the sgs2 to release.
I think the best option for some of us is to buy the carrier branded version on contract, sell it, and use that money to get the vanilla SGS 2. After dealing with all the Captivate issues as well I'm never buying a carrier branded Android ever again.

not to mention the Craptivate looks ugly as hell and nothing like a SGS
If i was on att there would be no doubt id go with international like you said no waiting for carrier update, no carrier branding and missing hardware features.
I really wish carriers kept the design the same as the international it would be so much easier to update and to port roms

That's one point where you're crazy. The Captivate is the nicest Galaxy S and has a lot less plastic than any other one. Everyone has told me they liked the Captivate over the other Galaxy S variants. I've been very happy with the Captivate, but not as happy about the AT&T branding and waiting for their crap.
I would much rather spend the money and buy the phone unlocked than buy it from ATT.

Only issue I see with this is warranty support. If Samsung US would support a UK model fine, but if it requires international shipping that would give me pause.
What if the US version has NFC? Would that change your mind?
Yes, NFC is useless right now, but wouldn't that at least lower your resell value of the UK version whenever one else in your area has NFC?

Given the fact (I hope) all 4 major carriers are getting it, and AT&T, VZW and T-Mob are in an NFC payment system alliance , the chances of US getting NFC versions are not extremely low

I don't see NFC being that important to me right away. I am guessing by the time it becomes important to me, I will already be looking at another phone.
Also, even though the UK might not be getting the NFC version, you probably will still be able to buy a NFC version unlocked from another country.
Hate to say it... but until the iPhone gets NFC it's not worth worrying about.
Devices still need to be upgraded in stores, airlines, and what not to accept NFC no? The above poster is probably correct, the phones are going to need to be widely available before companies spend the money to upgrade their equipment.

Why, because the iPhone has the market share lead and will dictate what the market will do? No, that's Android.

US Preorder Dates?

Well as the title suggests, im curious if any US carrier has opened preorders yet or if anyone has even heard when they might. Ive read that in the UK they will begin on the 28th. Im with AT&T and they have yet to announce anything in regards to availability or preorders.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
The whole secrecy thing about the launch date is baffling given how quick they were last year on the GN3 to announce the dates and get things rolling. Still I look forward to the GS5 and I suspect it will be LAG FREE. Just not sure if its AT&T or Verizon for me at this time.
It is pretty frustrating that a price hasn't been announced nor a pre-order date. I know those are just minor things, but it just makes no sense to me why they are keeping quiet about it. I just want the peace of mind that I preordered it and don't have to worry about anything.
Given the new leaked info about the new HTC One, i may end up passing on the S5. Not knowing when it will be released or even pricing, and the idea that the One may go on sale immediately following its launch is tempting if its true.
It just typical US carrier crap, they drag everything out so you buy whats available today and they can clear out the GS4 stock they have. I just want the 32GB on launch day.

it's the worst.. and S4 stock? these carriers are putting out promotions for the S3! like what idiots would buy an S3 on Contract in 2014 with the S5 launching in 3 weeks? These carriers take advantage of non techie customers.. It really pisses me off. They should have given us a pre-order date or pricing at least. I may hate Apple, but one thing they do right is the iPhone launches. They announce a phone, then put it out within 10 days at all carriers without any delay.
I saw tmobile will have it for sure in their site
Preorders open tomorrow (3-21) on AT&T for $200

Well I am told I am getting mine on the 26th (and it is the date that is listed on Three's website) and I know that Clove Technology said yesterday that their orders will be ready for the 26th too.
In-fact I think that Carphone Warehouse are the only UK company to not confirm the 26th as release date.
So strange... everywhere i read it's 27th for China... and beginning of july for the rest...
In Germany, it's 03/07 ...
Still "coming soon" for Tmobile, I give up.
Netherlands is announced July 3rd, allready ordered it and it should be delivered the 3rd.

Blame the CLOSED NATURE of the U.S. telcoms. At&t, Verizon pretty much have the market "locked up".
T-mobile tries, Sprint...well, it's Sprint...
BEFORE anything comes to the U.S. telcom market, it has to have features stripped, bloat added and have
tattoos of the carrier plastered all over it. If I were a smartphone maker, the U.S. would be the LAST place
I'd worry about marketing to.

I don't think the phone manufacturers have anything to worry about, snubbing the USA market. Look at the sales in Korea, Japan & China...they can sell MILLIONS in just an hour or so. Until they cut off the USA market, nothing will change with the USA telcoms. With a locked up market,
they don't give a rats about their customers. T-mobile is starting to crack the freeze out between at&t and Verizon, but it's a long battle.
I remember when the courts broke up "Southwestern Bell" into AT&T and the baby bells. It's taken almost 30 years to put them back together.
With just two main competitors, along with Sprint, T-mobile and a few regional MVNO's, there isn't much choice in what you can use in the
USA.
