TWRP 3.2.1-0 for Xiaomi Redmi Note 4/4X (mido) - Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Guides, News, & Discussion

Notes About Xiaomi Mi Devices:
Some Xiaomi Mi devices have bootloaders that require additional steps to unlock before you are able to flash custom images. This typically involves filling out an application to have your device unlocked.
You will need to follow the steps on Xiaomi's MIUI website in order to unlock your device.
Understand that unlocking your device will wipe all of your personal data, settings, and apps from its memory.
TWRP Install (Requires TWRP 2.8.4 or higher already installed):
Download the latest TWRP image file (.img) from the download link and boot TWRP. Go to install and find and select the Images... button. Browse to the image that you downloaded and select it. Choose recovery and swipe to flash.
Fastboot Install Method (No Root Required):
You will need the platform-tools from the Android SDK on your computer. Find the Android command line tools section on the page linked and install the SDK tools package. From the SDK Manager, download only the platform-tools to get adb and fastboot binaries.
Windows users will need proper drivers installed on their computer. You can try the simple FWUL adb/fastboot ISO or the Naked ADB drivers or the Universal ADB drivers if you don't already have a working driver installed
On your device, go into Settings -> About and find the Build Number and tap on it 7 times to enable developer settings. Press back and go into Developer Options and enable USB debugging. From your computer, open a command prompt and type:
adb reboot bootloader
You should now be in fastboot mode.
Download the correct image file and copy the file into the same folder as your adb and fastboot binaries. Rename the image to twrp.img and type:
fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
fastboot reboot
Note many devices will replace your custom recovery automatically during first boot. To prevent this, use Google to find the proper key combo to enter recovery. After typing fastboot reboot, hold the key combo and boot to TWRP. Once TWRP is booted, TWRP will patch the stock ROM to prevent the stock ROM from replacing TWRP. If you don't follow this step, you will have to repeat the install.
dd Install Method (Requires Root):
Download the latest image file (.img) from the download link above. Place it in the root of your /sdcard folder and rename it to twrp.img. Run the following commands via adb shell or a terminal emulator app:
su
dd if=/sdcard/twrp.img of=/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/recovery
#Download

I think this is a FAQ now. Official TWRP doesn't support Treble. There is a custom Treble version, which you can find a link to on the LOS 15.1 Treble threads.
You can also try OrangeFox TWRP, which supports Treble.

Remove/rename logd WITHOUT ROOT!

Hi, i recently found a way to delete logd file WITHOUT ROOT.
Its not simple but you stay unrooted and stock.
First you need android platform-tools and latest twrp image file from official twrp site.
You will need working computer with installed adb drivers and lg drivers for adb and fastboot to work.
Steps :
1. Download all files listed above.
2. Move twrp image file to platform tools folder.
3. By holding shift key open command prompt in folder platform-tools.
4. Make sure that you have enabled usb debugging on your LG.
5. In cmd type: adb reboot bootloader
6. Phone should restart and enter fastboot mode
7. Then enter this command: fastboot boot twrp.img
8. You will enter twrp recovery but now flash it.
9. Make sure that you have selected system as partition in twrp.
10. Go into file manager, then into system/data and you will find logd file.
11. Rename it to logd.bak
And done!
No root required and 100% successs
Tried it on two Lg g4 and worked.
Also with that metod you can delete batterystats.bin.

Hi.
You need to unlock the bootloader for this to work, and doing that will void the warranty
Could you please post the download links of the various tools and files needed for us newbies...
Also, screenshots of the various steps would be appreciated cos may accidentally brick our G4s..
Thanks..
unlocked bootloader needed so meh..
Btw, does this work on H818N with andriod 6.0 and sw version V20D??
Thanks
It works on any LG g4 with unlocked bootloader
Why would someone "not root" but have unlocked bootloader?

[Guide][Root] How to install the latest Google software update

This guide is primarily intended for rooted users, since stock users can just take the OTA.
Key points
User data and applications are kept intact
You do not have to remove your PIN, password, or fingerprint
You do not have to remove TWRP, Magisk, your custom kernel, dtbo, or anything
This is intended for monthly security updates; developer previews and beta releases may or may not work with this method. You're welcome to try, but all may not work as expected
Installing Update:
Make sure you have the latest Google SDK Platform Tools. Extract the archive to a location of your choosing (creates platform-tools folder)
Get the latest walleye Factory Image (not OTA) from Google's Developer Page and save to a location of your choosing
Extract the archive, and open the extracted folder. You should see a list of files:
bootloader-walleye-[version string].img
flash-all.bat
flash-all.sh
flash-base.sh
image-walleye-[version string].zip
radio-walleye-[version string].img
Open the flash-all script (flash-all.bat for Windows, flash-all.sh for Linux/OSX) in your favorite text editor.
Find the line that reads "fastboot -w update image-walleye-[version].zip and remove "-w" (the wipe user data switch). Save and close the flash-all script.
Move (cut and paste, etc) all of these files to the platform-tools folder.
Enable USB Debugging from the Developer Options menu on your device (press "Build Number" 7 times if not already visible)
With your device plugged into the computer, open a command prompt in the platform-tools folder
Windows: Open the folder, hold down Shift and right click inside the folder, "Open Command window here"
Linux: If you're on Linux you already know how to do this
OSX: Open a folder in a terminal
Reboot to bootloader:
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
Execute update script in terminal:
Windows:
Code:
flash-all.bat
Linux/OSX:
Code:
./flash-all.sh
The device will reboot a few times while updating
Restoring root and/or a custom recovery
Download latest:
TWRP image
Magisk zip
TWRP zip
(Optional) Custom kernel zip
Place all files in the platform-tools folder
Reboot to bootloader
Boot TWRP image.
Code:
fastboot boot [twrp image filename].img
Push zip files to /tmp
Code:
adb push [magisk filename].zip /tmp
Optional: TWRP persistent installation + custom kernel:
Code:
adb push [twrp filename].zip /tmp
adb push [custom kernel filename].zip /tmp
Install Magisk:
Code:
adb shell twrp install /tmp/[magisk filename].zip
Optional: TWRP persistent installation + custom kernel:
Code:
adb shell twrp install /tmp/[twrp filename].zip
adb shell twrp install /tmp/[custom kernel filename].zip
adb shell twrp install /tmp/[magisk filename].zip
Reboot to system

Thanks for that, but do not forget to mention to enable usb debugging mode, to account for people who are new to this community.
I'm having trouble Installing Magisk on Step 6. Every time I enter the code it says it can't locate the Magisk file for some reason.

My thought was that if someone is following this guide, they're already rooted, so would already know to have USB Debugging enabled. I'll add it though for completeness sake.

Relocking your bootloader is not necessary to flash this. Bootloader will remain unlocked after flashing.

TWRP 3.2.1-1 and 3.2.1-2 are able to decrypt /data and /sdcard. MTP still doesn't work, but you can place files on the sdcard via USB in system.

This is hit and miss, for example 3.2.1-2 won't decrypt /data/ for me on P DP1. Others though have no problem decrypting data.
I kept the instructions the same, but took out the decryption note. Even if your TWRP can decrypt /data/ it's not strictly necessary for this process, so there's consistency in the guide in spite of inconsistent TWRP behavior.

This honestly doesn't surprise me in the least; I would expect that Android P might use a different security scheme, so the decryption mechanism that works with Oreo may not be forward compatible.
For persistent twrp don’t you need to fastboot flash the recovery partition with the twrp image?

There is no recovery partition, the recovery is now part of the boot image. You have to boot the TWRP image, then flash the TWRP zip which will patch the boot image in both slots.
Right I meant the boot partition. But this contradicts the main guide here where it indicates the necessity to flash both the twrp image to the boot partition (not just boot to the image on your PC), AND flash the twrp zip to make it persistent.
You don’t need to worry about the twrp zip at all if all you want to do is fastboot boot the twrp image.

Sorry delete
Has there been a workaround created for those of us who can't unlock bootloader because OEM can't be unlocked? Wiping the phone and skipping wizard did not work for me. I'm just trying to root so I can delete apps I don't want.
Can someone tell me about the installing OTA.zip without unrooting or uninstalling the magisk. Is it possible to update through OTA on rooted stock ROM? Or what if we update using the OTA which comes automatically from Google?

That's not possible, which is why this process exists.

Message of dm-verity on TWRP Recovery website

I'm using android Pie(stock rom) on mi a1. I want to flash Lineageos for microG. On TWRP Recovery website, it says this device(mi a1-tissot) uses dm-verity and in order to bypass dm-verity's boot prevention, you will have to install a kernel that has dm-verity disabled in fastboot.
I'm completely new in the realm of flashing custom roms. And no website and youtube video talks about dm-verity in a clear manner:crying:. So what steps exactly should I follow to install Lineageos for microG?
Also, my phone(data) is encrypted. And I can't find a way to decrypt it. Will it affect flashing TWRP Recovery or Lineageos?
wHY did not anybody answer guys?
Here are the steps to install TWRP and maybe a custom ROM:
1.Make sure to have USB Debugging activated
2.Put the Mi A1 in Fastboot Mode(Volume Down+Power)
3.Connect your phone to your PC
4.Make sure to have downloaded platform-tools
5.Download the .img TWRP file and copy it in the platform-tools folder
6.Hold Shift and right Click in the platform-tools folder, and click onpen a PowerShell window here
7.Type fastboot devices or .\fastboot devices(for me the second worked)
8.Now write fastboot boot twrp.xx.xx.xx.img(here Goes the name of your .img TWRP file)
9.After 15 seconds, you will probably see a warning that asks You to swipe to allow modifications.Don't swipe.Press on:Keep read only.
10.From this point,You can install every custom ROM,You can install Magisk.
Hope this helped You out!

I found this thread by doing something wrong that you mentioned. I didn't swipe to allow modifications and now the TWRP can't flash anything. Tried every remedy I can find but nothing. It can wipe system though, but not restore it so now I'm stuck in bootloops. Damn, idk what to do.
Dear Zentom, for me,that method worked. But,I can help you get out of that situation
1.Make sure to have your bootloader unlocked
2.Download the stock ROM for Mi A1
3.Boot into Fastboot Mode
4.Extract the stock ROM archive
5.Copy all the extracted files into the platform-tools folder
6.Find a .bat file names "flash-all"
7.Open it
8.After 15 minutes or so,your phone will boot.
Hope I helped you!
