Xperia XZ Premium laggy Video Playback after the latest update android 8.0. - Sony Xperia XZ Premium Guides, News, & Discussion

I've purchased my XZ Premium 2 months ago, i had no problems with it so far great performance, incredible HDR screen, with Android 7.1 nougat on board, and updated it to Android 8.0 oreo the performance got even better. but i noticed a problem after receiving a small update in January 2018, in playbacking some videos on Sony's video app, the issue is whenever i play an mkv video formats the video gets laggy as hell, first i thought the phone doesn't support this format or something like that, but when i tried to to play another regular mkv videos the same issue occur, I got frustrated then i tried to play the movies that I watched month ago it had the same issue, before it was playing fine now it's laggy, i was like "what the hell is going on", I've lots of videos with different formats and resolutions, my XZ Premium can play 4K and 4K HDR content h264 and h265 codecs just fine, but when playing some 1080p video that is mkv / wbem format h264 or h265 the video gets laggy, even playing 720p videos, the problem don't occur with mp4 files only on mkv videos, it's so annoying.*
Imagine the phone can run 4k with no problems but lags when playing 720p videos, lol what the f*** is going with this phone really?.
My old Xperia Z with Android 4.4.4 kitkat can run the video without lags but my new XZ Premium lags, lol this new update totally ruined my new phone for good, I'm a big fan of Sony Xperia phones my first Android phone was an Xperia and the last phone I've purchased is an Xperia.
Plus: my friend had the same problem on his Xperia Z5 Premium, when he updated his phone from Android 6.0 (marshmallow) to Android 7.0 (nougat), I downgraded it to 6.0 and the problem* gone, i really wanna know why is this happening with the new Xperia updates.
Here's a video sample of the issue I'm talking about.

Thanks, I'm already using it, playing videos on H/W+ feature,
But this way the X-Reality pro won't work, if i play it on the normal H/W the video gets laggy again, as I was say this problem occurred after the update, I'm just waiting for a fix or update to fix this issue, or I'm downgrading to Android 7.1.

i didn't get any lag at all, i previously owned a XZ and still do, latest Android flavour and not a single problem... hmmm

I have no problem with it too, this issue is just with playing some mkv videos, like I said, it can run 4k HDR videos without lags.

MX Player is problematic for me if I use HW+, I have to use either HW or SW. But the problems aren't lagging, but more like frames not getting decoded properly.

Yeah, exactly if it was laggy really then i would hear the audio stops for seconda and resumes, but this time the audio is playing just finel, the only thing that's lagging is the video, like you said it probably the frames aren't decoding property or something similar to that

Thanks I really appreciate your help, but before I flash out my OS, i wanna know if you have the same kind of problem or are certain this is the way to fix it, you know I've some important data (app data) and i don't want to lose it, and it's OK of I just flash it without wipe out the user data.
BTW mind if you tell me what region it is? The firmware i mean.

3D drivers & Video playback

Hi All,
I m pretty new to winmo scene but I have read that there is a huge concern on the video playback of HTC devices.
My question would be if this phone will actually have proper video drivers.
It is advertised as a phone which could play back DVD quality movies.
Does that mean that I would be able to take a normal "downloaded" episode of lets say Lost and play it back on the device without conversion?
I realize that I would need a program such as CorePlayer but would I actually be able to play the movie without having to convert it into some lower format?
The lucrative thing about the Xperia is the resolution and the video playback possibility.
I m just hoping that the device wont experience the problems of the Kaiser etc.

Who wants to watch LOST?
I'd rather watch Supernatural, or House, or Bones, or Heroes, or... the list goes on - but no Lost!
Anyways... i think i read somewhere that it has XVid support (which is what the episodes are usually encoded with/in or whatever). I'm not 100% sure if i read this for Xperia specifically, but it was definitely an WinMo device, but if that has it, so would Xperia have it or we could add it via codec pack or something.
Hehehe well your right about Lost
Rather watch Heroes or Californication ))
I m just thinking that Xvid support will not be out of the box and we will have to get it through a program called Coreplayer
My only concern is that HTC has a track record for not "enabling" proper video acceleration in their devices. This might be different for Xperia since SE is making the software.
I just hope we end up with a device that can play episodes of our favorite stuff .. without having to convert the files.

I second that!
Haven't watched californication yet... maybe will give it a try.
Ok... so i just checked, it was Omnia. Samsung Omnia has Xvid support out of the box... i hope SE does the same for X1.

Actually the Touch Diamond and Pro have 3D acceleration.
And since my old as time Nokia can play xvid files after installing some codecs, i cant imagine WM not being able to

Hmm I think your right about Omnia although I haven’t seen any reports on the Xvid playback.
I heard that Omnias video drivers were ripped onto other HTC devices to increase the FPS for playing videos.
and you should definitely find some time for Californication
Lets hope we get some reports soon on avi playback. The 384 ram sounds encouraging.

Your right about them having 3d acceleration but there still seems to be some issue with having proper drivers that enable the ATI chip that speeds up the video. It has something to do with HTC not wanting to pay the license for those drivers I think.

Yes, HTC did not enable the ATI chip in many of their devices with the MSM7x00 chips, such as the tilt. When this was exposed, it made many very angry. I believe the new devices (diamond, pro, hd) have true 3D acceleration enabled. HTC cant make the same mistake anymore.

YouTube HQ not working right?

So I went to watch my favourite music video on YouTube (Earl by Earl Sweatshirt, if you're interested xD). Anyways when I went to load it in landscape mode, the audio would play but the video would not move. So I turned off HQ, and it started working great! Albeit, the quality was greatly dampered. I am on Froyo using Cyanogenmod 6, the latest release and I am using the latest release of the YouTube client from the market.
Sent from my HTC Dream
nope, the HQ videos uploaded since Jan or Feb 2011 have a higher resolution compared to earlier ones (640x360 as compared to 480x360),so they just dont play.the 320x240 vids play as usual,so in a way HQ doesnt exist anymore for our phones, unless you r watching an older upload.
This just sucks,if not HQ atleast there should be resize/fit to screen options in the player so the video doesnt get tinier on the already limited space.
Thanks for the clarification.
I was wondering why some HQ vids work fine on my magic but most of the time I have the same prob with Smokexz heh.
I've noticed while running Gingeryoshi 1.1, using the Stock Browser allows you to watch HQ Videos. But there is a slight delay from the press of play, to the actual playback.
Sorry for the bump of this old thread, but is there really no recent rom that allows for the play of HQ videos? Does anyone know if installing an old apk of the youtube app allows it?

Video playback limitations

Hi guys, im having problems playing HD videos on my device. I tried using a variety of players known to support wide range of codecs but none seemed to work. I tried players like rockplayer, advanced Vplayer, mobo player and all of them that i can get my hands on ,none seem to work. The problem is that these players play the videos but there seems to be no sync between audio and video. The audio plays fine but the video lags behind. Anyone who has found a solution to this? pls help me.. im heavily disappointed on the audio and video playback front on this phone. I also would like to know if switching or updating to gingerbread with the roms available here would solve the issue??...pls help..Thanks in advance.
This is an already addressed problem in this forum . You must be talking about mkv 720p files .
There is a definite lag in stock ROM's ... rex4u has tweaked his phone so his dont lag.. but for the rest of us ... we're in the same boat...
The thing is there are'nt proper driver support for mkv 720p files for our phone even though our hardware can support it... so hoping and waiting for samsung to do something about it!
This has been discussed before here...

Thanks for the info bro... And can u also tell me how the audio is?... Its not upto the standRds if u ask me.. The headphones doesnt have that wow kinda effect...or is it that I need a better player or something? I use poweramp but cant tweak the equaliser it gets distorted wen I tweak..any suggestion?.. Thanx in advance...

Galaxy S Video Playback on ICS ROMS

Hey guys,
I'm gonna keep it short. My dad has a galaxy s and he's too fond of watching videos. Unfortunately, on every ROM I've tried, video playback isn't smooth at all. One of the reason I guess is the second core and hardware decoding issues whatever, but there should be a solution.. which I am not able to. I feel really bad for him, help me out?
He bought my a Galaxy Nexus and uses the i9000 himself and I really wanna help him out.
Videos play great for me on CM9 Noghtlies with stock kernel
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda premium
+1 stock kernel also works fine for me.

there is no lag fix this problem with codec not capable to play 1080p that why its lag
btw what the point of playing 1080p on 480*800 screen
Confused by the OP's question: do videos not play at all? Or are there certain codecs/bitrates that are posing a problem?
To be perfectly clear: the term "lagfix" is essentially a filesystem change from RFS to EXT4 and is only applicable for Samsung ROMs that use RFS. All AOSP-like ROMs like CyanogenMod are using proper file systems (ext4 and yaffs2) to begin with so there is no "lag" to "fix." Consider the lagfix term deprecated
720p videos in wmv format do not support h/w decoding, therefore they are very slow. With mp4 or mkv it's all fine though.
Do give dice player a shot...
Playback of 720p mkv's is fine for me on both Slim ICS 3.6 and the latest CM nightly with MXplayer/BSplayer.
But TV OUT is really bad though. 720p lags so much I only get about 2-3 fps. And lower res videos show a lot of screen tearing on the tv during scenes with a lot of movement.

My initial testing was just with the stock video player, I'm sure MX Player works great but haven't tried it yet since the update. It does play 1080P flawlessly. I dont use netflix so can't comment on that but, you tube also works perfect. The mk908II is in the top 3 at the moment imo, well worth the money.

XBMC has never been 100% stable on Android, so any issues it might have would attributed to XBMC and not the device.
I don't use XBMC so I can't really say more than that
Even with the newest update I can't watch 1080p movies without a slight choppyness. It doesn't seem much but it's very irritating when having to look at it.
