Downgrade ASUS MEMO PAD7 (ME70C) - MeMO Pad 7 General

Hello, I want to share with you what I managed to do (Asus support wrote to me that it is impossible). The whole DOWNGRADE manual is slightly complicated but in my case it worked. Asus wrote that it is not possible to return to the older version of the android in the K01A (me70c) due to the updated bootloader ...
ook let's get to the point.
Files that you will need:
1.Recovery (disposable)
link: http://androidhost.org/KYRT5
2.ADB Flashtools
link: http://androidhost.org/P2XKs
3. tablet updated to Android 5.0
4. official software from the asus site. Android 4.4.2
link: http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/EeePAD/ME70C/UL-K01A-WW-11.2.3.33-user.zip
Okey, now we're starting to play!
1. we download and unpack Fastboot.zip
2. We download the official Android 4.4.2 software (link above). Downloading and unpacking, copy files: fastboot.img, splashscreen.img and boot.img to the folder where we have unpacked ADB FASTBOOT.
4. Now copy the official Android 4.4.2 software to the memory card (K01A-WW_V11.2.3.33.zip copy to the memory card)
5. Okey, now we turn off the tablet and run it in fastboot mode (please press vol + and power and hold it for about 10 seconds.)
6. Connect it to USB and run cmd (go out to the folder where our FASTBOOT folder was previously unpacked). SHIFT + RIGHT MOUSE BUTTON and choose 'open the command window here'
7. And here you should be careful what we write:
a)fastboot flash fastboot fastboot.img
b) fastboot flash boot boot.img
c) fastboot flash splashscreen splashscreen.img
d) fastboot reboot
8. Now the device will restart, but we turn it off sharply - please hold POWER until the device turns off. Now we restart it to FASTBOOT mode (vol + and power)
9. We connect it under USB
10. Go to our folder with (one-time RECOVERY) and run 'LAUNCHER.BAR'. We write in the 'ACCEPT' window and then write 'T2' now our device should start in CWM recovey after a while.
11. Okey, now we choose 'install zip' -> 'choose zip from extrenal sdcard' -> and choose our Official software which we have previously copied to the SD card and approved. Now all we have to do is wait for the installation to finish.
12. now please reset the system by going back to CWM in the first page and approving 'reboot system now' -> 'no' -> 'no'
13. End )
I think I helped. This method worked for me and everything goes without complaint
Regards!
and I apologize for my weak English
I DO NOT ANSWER FOR THE DESTROYMENT OF THE DEVICE. EVERYTHING YOU WILL HAVE OWN RESPONSIBILITY !!! (after all, nothing bad should happen :fingers-crossed:

Dear rysiun39p!
I downloaded the firmware from the link you gave us, but there is no such a file in the zip, you mention in the seventh step.
fastboot flash flash.img (there is no "flash.img" in the provided .zip file)
Maybe you mean fastboot.img ? or that line is just an example?
Please help me if you can

Yes yes, you are right, I made a mistake at the seventh point. Instead of 'flash.img' the file should be 'fastboot.img *'. I apologize for the mistake, I will correct it soon

Aloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooot of thanks
it's working

Hello guys,
I need your help with my Asus Memopad 7 tablet.
I have been searching and trying for 2weeks how to unlock the bootloader.
According to the K01a model, I found countless tutorials (here, youtube, other forums that led again to xda...) and everywhere the bootloader for the K01a model ME170...,173,.... was described. But nothing worked, even though a few methods had some cooperation with the tablet, but without results.
I'm glad I locked the tablet.
I only found out from ASUS support that my K01a model is the ME70C version based on the serial number.
I'm looking for how to unlock the bootloader for the ME70C, but the instructions are nowhere to be found.
And if I find this one, it is listed here in the procedure for "downgrade" with android 5 installed.
On the contrary, I need an upgrade from Android 4.3. to 5 or 6 ( :-D ) so that I can use apps whose support ended for android 4.
How did you manage to unlock the bootloader to install android 5 on your tablet?
I was trying update to UL-K01A-WW-12.8.1.41-user but the upgrade will not complete ( i'm guessing because i still have build 10.32.1.....)
Asus Memopad7 for Europe distribution: Model K01A (ME70C), Android 4.3, Kernel version: 3.4.43 [email protected] #1 Tue Jul 22 14:38:47 CST 2014
Build number: JSS15Q.WW_MeMo_Pad-10.32.1.31.3-20140722
My bootloader has only menu:
Reboot droidboot
Reboot
Factory recovery
SD Download
Power Off
SD Update
Thanks for the help.

[GUIDE][13/11]Update/Recovery/Root/Downgrade Android 4.2.1 on Unlocked/Locked Devices

Asus released the new Android 4.2 to our beloved devices and you may be wondering how can you update if you are unlocked and how can you root it.
Note: this guide was updated with the 2.5.0.0 TWRP. For this to work properly, you will need to use the last 10.6.1.27.1 version of the tablet, or a newer one. If you are already on a previous 4.2.1 version, please update to the new one using this same guide. If you flash this recovery with the older versions of the 4.2.1 bootloaders, you will end up with a double screen! New TWRP versions won't be able to mount boot and recovery, and won't work with all SD cards, not to talk about backup issues!
Things you should know before you start:
- I marked each title of this guide with [LOCKED BL], [UNLOCKED BL] and [BOTH BL] to specify witch ones will work with locked/unlocked or both bootloaders, respectively.
- Please verify if you have the correct drivers for the tablet installed on your computer. Windows 7/8 should install these automatically.
- The new 4.2 updates the bootloader, removing the USB icon that used to appear there and allowed you to enter fastboot. It's OK, you will be able to use it right from the bootloader menu, without selecting any option at all.
- Do this at your own risk! I'm not responsible if you break your tablet!
- Don't forget to make BACKUPS!
- If you are already on 4.2, then you can skip to the Recovery and Root parts of this guide
-- Installing / Updating to 4.2.1 --
There are three methods you can use to update your tablet to the latest Android stock version. All of them will require you to download the
firmware file located at Asus website. You can download them from here. Select Android as the OS, firmware and choose the right firmware for you SKU. You can find your SKU by following the instructions on the website itself. Don't forget to unpack the zip file you downloaded: there's another inside!
[BOTH BL] Method 1: Updating directly from stock ROM
Notes:
You must have a stock ROM installed
You need to put the update file on an SD card
You will keep all your data
I do not recommend this method: sometimes it ends up on a brick
If your tablet is stock, or have some custom ROM based on stock installed, you can directly update the tablet by simply inserting a SD Card with the firmware file inside. Android will prompt you with a notification asking if you want to update. Touch it and wait until the update is done
[UNLOCKED BL] Method 2: Update using fastboot
Notes:
You will keep all your data
This is the best method to update your tablet if you want to keep all your data, and the safest one
Ensure you have the correct drivers for the tablet installed on your computer, or you will have a "waiting for device" error
To update using fastboot, follow this steps:
If you don't have fastboot yet, download it from here an unpack it somewhere on your computer
Extract the Asus firmware file and put the blob file inside fastboot folder
Open a command line on fastboot folder (write "cmd" on Windows search bar at the Start menu, and then
Code:
cd "FOLDER WHERE YOU EXTRACTED FASTBOOT"
, or you can just use SHIFT + RIGHT CLICK on the folder and select "Open command line window here" or something like that)
Reboot the tablet holding the volume down key until you see some icons. Use the volume down key to select the USB icon and then volume up to select it
Connect the tablet to the computer if you didn't do so
Write
Code:
fastboot -i 0x0B05 flash staging blob
, hit enter and wait until it completes
Hold the power button for 10 seconds to reboot the tablet
You are now updated to Android 4.2
[UNLOCKED BL] Method 3: Update using TWRP recovery
Notes:
You must have TWRP installed
You need to put the update file on an SD card
This was the method I used since I wanted to prevent any bugs due to old data and to ensure the new partitions from 4.2 would be OK
You will keep your data as long as you don't wipe Data and Factory reset (including internal memory)
Follow the steps bellow if you want to update to 4.2.1 DELETING ALL YOUR DATA , STARTING FROM SCRATCH!
Insert the SD card with the update file on the tablet
Reboot to recovery
Wipe Cache, Dalvik and System. Wipe Data if you want a fresh start on your tablet, but remember, THIS WILL WIPE ALL YOUR DATA AND INTERNAL MEMORY!!. You can also do a Factory Reset instead of data wipe if you want to remove all your android configurations/apps keeping your internal storage.
Install the Asus Firmware
Reboot (ignore the "no OS installed message) and let it finish
You have now the latest Android 4.2.1
[UNLOCKED BL]-- Installing TWRP (Recovery) --
Since this new update brings a new bootloader, older recovery versions from 4.1 won't work at all. Don't try to flash one!
This guide will give you a recovery that works just fine on the new bootloader. And yes, it can read/write to an external SD just fine. Follow this steps to install the new recovery on your device:
Connect the tablet to the computer
Reboot the tablet using the proper button on the power menu, holding Volume down until you see three icons (RCK, Android and Wipe Data)
Download this file and unpack it (it contains fastboot and the TWRP 2.5.0.0 which works with the new bootloader)
Open a command line on the extracted folder (you can use the instructions I wrote in Method 2 if you don't know how to do this) and type
Code:
fastboot -i 0x0b05 flash recovery twrp.blob
Wait for the script to complete. Once it is done, reboot the tablet by holding volume down and power button for 10 seconds. Don't enter recovery directly!
You have now the new recovery for Android 4.2 .
[BOTH BL] -- Rooting --
Note: If you are willing to install a custom ROM like CROMI you don't need this. Custom ROMs have root by default.
Rooting the tablet once you have a recovery is pretty easy. Here's how you can do it:
- Unlocked devices
Download SuperSu zip file from here (choose the flashable version) ]and place it on a SD card or inside the root of your tablet's internal memory
Reboot the tablet holding vol down, and when the three icons appear, hit volume up to enter recovery
When the recovery prompts you a password, hit cancel (this is a bug from the current version of TWRP, and it should be fixed soon. It is ok to ignore it!)
Flash the zip you just downloaded
Wipe Dalvik/Cache (just in case)
Reboot
You are now rooted!
- Locked devices
If you have your bootloader locked you can root Android 4.1/4.2 by using the method discovered by Morlok8k, here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2228613 (note that this isn't tested yet for the latest 10.6.1.27.5 firmware!)
[UNLOCKED BL] -- Downgrading to 4.1 or other firmware --
I was going to write a downgrade method but it seems that there is a good one here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2195883
Again, do it at your own risk.
[LOCKED BL] -- Recovering your tablet from scratch --
If you are on a stock locked device and somehow got a bootloop and you can't do anything with your tablet you follow this steps to completely restore your tablet. Note that all data will be lost.

========= Recover /Downgrade from Jelly Bean to ICS/Clean Factory Restore with stock recovery =========
1) Download the latest firmware from Asus website
2) Extract the .zip file somewere on your desktop (the result will be another .zip file, use it for step 3)
3) Rename the extracted archive to "EP201_768_SDUPDATE.ZIP" (without the " ") and upload it to a MicroSD card
4) Insert the MicroSD card in your tablet and use this button combination to Power ON and go to recovery --> Start the tablet by pressing Volume Down and POWER togheter for 5 seconds ,a message will inform you that you have 5 seconds to enter the recovery, press Volume UP before the 5 seconds expire.
At this point the device will go in recovery and should start updating your firmware .
Note: Keep in mind that Windows doesn't show the known file extensions so most users don't have to put the .ZIP extension in the filename.

This is great. Just one question for clarification: Users have reported not being able to see their External microSD's in TWRP. Is this still the case, or did the patch to TWRP alleviate this issue?
would i need to unlock the bootloader to do this?

So I've read, upgrading does not relock you, so you shouldn't need to. For those that are locked and upgrade to 4.2.1 there is a new unlock tool to do it.

Verified that this works for me. If you read ahead and placed the SuperSu zip on your SD card BEFOREhand, you can even skip one of the reboots.
WARNING
Your instructions are wrong... You cannot flash the update using custom recovery, it will result in a brick..
Already happened with me!!! I've followed your tutorial blindly and had to sweat a bit to recover my tablet.
Change it ASAP.
Best solution to unbrick/flash is to go into fastboot and use
fastboot -i 0x0B05 flash system blob
fastboot -i 0x0B05 flash system "name of the update"

YOU CAN FLASH UPDATE FILE FROM ASUS WEBSITE WITH TWRP AND THERE IS NOT BRICK IN HERE
******
here is what i just did to update my tab to 4.2.1
-was running cleanrom 3.4.4 with twrp 2.2.2.0
-downloaded twrp 2.4.4.0 and flashed it with fastboot
-download 4.2.1 update file from asus website=> unzip this file to get the real file ( apparently, asus just put the rom.zip file into a folder, then zip this folder again, kind a stupid here ^^)=> put it in my external micro sdcard
- boot into recovery=> flash the updated rom.

Re: [Tutorial] Rooting and installing a recovery on Android 4.2.1 (10.6.1.8+)
What i have done
I download the firmware from asus and renamed to xx_epad-user-10.6.1.8.zip
XX is the ww or US you must rename this in the directory what you extract
Example WW_epad-user-10.6.1.8.zip
US_epad-user-10.6.1.8.zip
Then put it in the root of your sd card or on your root on the tablet
Then you can update
And you can root follow this forum.
I am on 4.2.1 and rooted
Thank for all who have this made it
Thanks

I did flash my asus with the zip from asus web page with no issues, I used TWRP 2.4.3
I un-zipped the file (just one time and without change the name) and I placed the next zip file to my SD card root folder, then I made a full wipe and intall the zip file from SD card.
Right now my asus belong to my wife, my youngest son and I because I can create users.
I made a backup of my apps with the asus aplication and I could reinstall all them after the update.

Good to go for me. TWRP recovery and rooted. Nice write up man.
You might add in there something about the new bootloader booting directly to fastboot now, no need to select the usb icon. Also maybe mention to make sure that the drivers get installed properly once you are in fastboot. When I booted to fastboot it had to install some drivers, so I waited for those to finish before I ran the fastboot command.
Installed TB and about to uninstall some bloat. Can't wait for roms to get updated.
Thanks again man.

ZTE Blace V220 / Avea Intouch 4 [root success]

[edit]: Succesful root thanks to @mseskir advice [edit]
Hello everyone.
I just replaced my old Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini (i8190) by a new ZTE Blade V220 (nifty hardware at nifty price, EURO 140, WOOT).
I chose it because I didn't want to make a great spent, only to find out that there is no development on this model and that it doesn't even appear on ZTE webpage, so I can't "root" it or change the recovery.
As per Mseskir, this phone is the same than "Avea Intouch 4", a phone sold by a turkish brand.
Below are the hardware details:
- Qualcomm MSM8916 quad core 1'2 Ghz
- 800/900/1800/2100/2600 Mhz CAT 4
- 5" IPS screen (1280 x 720), looks nicer than the super AMOLED S3 mini screen
- 1 Gb RAM + 8 Gb storage (2 gb already spent for OS, even though it brings no bloatware at all)
- Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, WIFI, SD card slot
- 13 Mpx back camera with autofocus, and 5 mpx front camera (not top-notch quality, but good enough for me)
- 2100 mAh battery
- 139 x 71,5 x 9,5 mm (the back is too curvy for most hard covers ).
- Android KITKAT 4.4.4
ROOT steps:
A) I had to use the ZTE ADB drivers bundled with the phone (just mount USB in "driver mode" option
and run the bundled exe in your mobile storage).
The drivers will be installed in "C:\Program Files\ZTE_Handset_USB_Driver". Remember this directory.
B) Download "Root-SuperSU-v2.37.zip" from file from mseskir's yandex drive, within the "root"
folder. You can find the link in his post below. Upload without unzipping to your mobile internal memory.
You will need it later.
C) Download the "IT4_Recovery_Yukleme_Programı.exe" file from mseskir's yandex drive, within the "root"
folder. You can find the link in his post below.
D) Unzip "IT4_Recovery_Yukleme_Programı.exe" and get "recovery.img" (recover with TWRP) or
"recovery_stock.img" (if you prefer stock recovery) from the "tools" folder.
I will use "recovery.img" because I have been using TWRP since my old Xperia Neo V.
Copy the your "recovery.img" of choice to the folder where the USB ADB drivers was installed.
Copy the "fastboot.exe" file there too.
E) Enable "USB ADB debug" in android "Developer Options". Ensure that Windows detects and installs
the drivers properly.
F) Open command prompt and go to "C:\Program Files\ZTE_Handset_USB_Driver"
G) Type "adb devices", if everything goes well you will see your phone serial number listed
there. If you receive some error while starting the daemon, ensure that no other ADB app
is running in the background or try another ADB drivers.
You can check your phone serial number in the mobile itself: Phone Information --> Status
H) Type "adb reboot bootloader" in command prompt. The phone will reboot and will get stuck in boot image
with the notification led in red (scary, but don't worry, it's all fine).
I) Type "fastboot devices" in command prompt. You will see again the phone serial number in the window.
The phone screen will remain unchanged, like if it where frozen, but don't worry, everything is still fine.
J) Ensure that you have copied "recovery.img" in the same folder than adb.exe and fastboot.exe
( "C:\Program Files\ZTE_Handset_USB_Driver", as I mentioned earlier).
Then, type "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img". If you copied the "recovery.img" and the "fastboot.exe"
to the driver folder you will see the flash progress. It will take one or two seconds and give you an "ok" message.
K) Type "fastboot reboot" and the mobile will reboot. Let it boot till the end. Disconect USB cable and
shutdown the mobile completely.
L) Push and maintain "volume up". While you maintain "volume up", push "power" button a few seconds
to start the mobile. Keep maintaining "volume up" until TWRP boot screen appears.
M) Flash "Root-SuperSU-v2.37.zip" with TWRP. You should have already copied it to mobile storage if you followed my advice in point "B". Reboot to system and it's done.
I leave this here so if anyone searches for this phone like me, he will know how to succesfully root it.
Thanks to everyone in advance.
Root
Hi, your phone is same like my phone "avea intouch 4" this is my files link
https://yadi.sk/d/8GHocBtnfTp7A
Go to root folder, download the IT4_recovery_yukleme_programi.exe
Run it, turn usb debugging on in your phones devoloper options then connect your phone select twrp recovery yukleme in the programs menu, a message will pop up on your phone, select "ok" then it will reboot to bootloader and flash twrp recovery to device. After reboot open the twrp recovery and firstly backup your device to sdcard1 and copy it to your pc then install supersu package from my root folder. Thats all.
But first you must install drivers.
If anything goes wrong i will help you as i can.

Go to root folder, download the IT4_recovery_yukleme_programi.exe

Thanks @mseskir, I have tried it without luck.
When using option 2, I receive "sonraki asamaya gecmiyorsa suruculeri tekrar yukleyiniz" which means
something like "Your driver does not pass to the next stage reload".
So I uninstalled the ADB drivers that came bundled within the phone storage, and installed the ones on your link,
but still the same even after reboot and complete clean.
Any suggestion?.

Ok. Can you try this;
open my exe file with 7zip and extract
open tools folder
click right mouse button with shift (from keyboard) pressed
select open command prompt here
in command prompt;
type adb device
on your phone screen a warning will pop up, select ok
then you will see your phones serial number in cmd window
then type;
adb reboot bootloader
your phone will reboot to bootloader,
type;
fastboot devices
if you cant see serial number; go to my yandex folder, in tools folder; AdbDriverInstaller.exe download it and run it. it will install the fastboot drivers
then type "fastboot devices" again, if you can see your serial number type;
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
then type "fastboot reboot"
if you dont want twrp recovery you can use cwm recovery, it is inside my root folder IT4_Root_Anlatımı.zip (extract it, there is cwm recovery)
if something goes wrong tell me..

I got TWRP (i'm used to it) working and root by working following your instructions, thank you very much.
But I have had to use my own adb files taken from zte drivers installer (bundled with the mobile)
as replacement from the ones bundled in your zip file, which always errored out for me when trying
to start the service.
The only scary moment was when I issued "adb reboot bootloader" and the mobile got stuck on ZTE boot image. I was waiting for a while for bootloader to appear, but it didn't happen, so I proceed with next step.
When I have some time tomorrow or weekend, I will update the first post for the proper steps to attain root.
helpful thanks
lollipop update
avea intouch4 original 5.0 update files
http://www.avea.com.tr/web/android5update/update.zip
How to update zte blade v220 Download update zip that link. And move sdcard then settings-Phone information-System updates and press OK
It shows recovery wait here.
Later Phone will start and 'll boot 5.0.2
I would advice to avoid updating the phone to V5.0.2 with the update file because of the following:
A) You will lose your existing root. You will have to root again Use http://www.kingroot.net/ for easy and clean root.
B) You will have trouble connecting to previously working WLAN networks (I'm suffering it right now, lots of people complaining about this, just click here "https://www.google.es/webhp?sourcei...8#q=android 5.0.2 wifi authentication problem" to see what I mean). Using "Wifi Fixer" app it sometimes works well, sometimes it disconnects itself, I need to check further.
C) Only English, German, French and Turkish languages are available in the update. Although I miss the Spanish language, I could live with english. Partly fixed with "Set Locale and Language" app from Google Play
D) I'm still trying to figure out how to flash TWRP to restore my 4.4.4 backup.
E) Fastboot support with 5.0.2 is crimpled so I can't use it to reflash TWRP. I can't seem to find a valid TWRP version to flash with "TWRP manager" either.
F) Don't know if it's a bug or not, but screen switches on and off when idle and locked without any reason that I can find. It bothers me a lot!.
G) Just discovered that this update also locks bootloader. That's the reason I can't flash recovery.img back.
Be warned.
I give up with this!
Well, after a few days trying different solutions to install a TWRP recovery to recover my stock backup, I have messed it up to the point that I'm now stuck in the following status:
The phone gets stuck in bootloop with Avea logo. It heats up a lot but doesn't boot no matter how long you wait.
Before messing it up, I managed to install Phil6 recovery version 6.57.9 (I still can access it with VOL+ and power button).
This Phil6 version I got seems to be compiled for "sprout" hardware, so it will always error up when trying to flash roms for msm8916 hardware.
Any other roms I try to flash that don't error up with sprout message will always fail with "error: 0". I have tested a few roms with two different SD cards, so it's not a badly downloaded rom.
Restoring my TWRP backup with Phil6 doesn't error out, but the phone still doesn't pass the avea logo.
I first went for a 6" Sony Xperia C5 Ultra, but the main camera quality was terrible and it heated up a lot, enough to unglue the screen protector.
So I returned it to the shop and picked a Huawei Ascend P8.
Much better hardware than V220, much better still camera, slightly worse video recording quality (IMHO), and twice as expensive as the V220, but it really flies compared to the V220, gentlemen.
Thanks everyone.
Thanks to @ozgurharan's rom, I have been able to bring back to life my ZTE Blade V220.
This is his rom's link, I got his permission to post it here: https://yadi.sk/d/uv3bhb0knX8nn
Too bad that I still can't restore my TWRP backup or the original KitKat rom with spanish language, but something is better than nothing.
Be warned that this rom has only English, French, Turkish and Deutsch languages.
Thanks a lot @ozgurharan
Hello. I have already upgraded my Avea In Touch 4 to 5.0.2 before reading this post. Now I cannot root my phone. I have followed every step on this post but in bootloader mod when I try fastboot flash recovery the recovery.img I get an error like "writing recovery... failed (remote: unknown command). I tried to install the last rom you have shared but still not working. I just want to root my phone and have the last version of stock rom for my phone if avaliable. Can you please help me?:crying::crying::crying:

Use kingroot. It worked for me.
@mseskir, do you happen to still have the previous TWRP version for Avea Intouch 4 (I think it was 2.7.0.3 or around it)?.
I have flashed your current TWRP 2.8.6.1 to root the phone but this version can't mount SD card, so I can't flash zip files from SD card.
The File Explorer shows SD card as 0 Mb, but if I boot the phone SD card is recogniced and will work well.
Or if you have a newer version than 2.8.6.1 that doesn't fail to mount SD card will be fine too.
NOTE: Long story short with my previous struggles with Blade V220 and horrible Android 5.0.2 update. Doing some tests I did a very bad flash and f##ked the phone completely,
so I had to send it to ZTE tech support. The phone was still on warranty so they replaced the phone PCB with a new one that has Android 4.4.4.
Thanks in advance.

The method only applies to P8 and the author says it might not be applicable to Max as the recovery is P8.
However, just for the record
1. Unlock the bootloader

2. Fastbboot custom recovery *Need to create a TWRP recovery for the P8 Max

Managed to root my phone.. even when I have updated the EMUI to B018, but there was an issue.. I tell you below
Step I follow from Chinese Forum below...
Preparation step :
1. download the tools from
https://www.mediafire.com/?9drsdo2f6hn4j34
2. Extract the content to your local. Note there are two folders :
- Folder 1 is for the tool that contains the TWRP recovery.img and the adb/fastboot tool,
- Folder 2 is for the original recovery
3. Copy the SuperSU zip to your phone (either in internal or external memory of your phone)
Installation step :
Step 0, unlock your bootloader (search around on how to do it)
1. Since I am using mac, somehow I don't need to install any driver, but if you using windows, install all the driver yourself
2. Enable the developer mode in your phone, and after that enable the usb debugging
3. Turn off your phone, and boot to fastboot (in off mode, connect the phone with your PC then press Volume Up and Power Button together)
4. Since now your phone has been connected to the PC, go to that Tool folder in respective of your OS, then overwrite the recovery with TWRP with fastboot command (install custom recovery) *note : for mac just add "./" in every command
- check the whether its connected : fastboot devices
- install TWRP : fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
5. Restart your phone and boot to recovery
- restart : fastboot reboot
- after reboot, turn off your phone
- reboot to recovery : turn on your phone by holding Volume Down with Power button
- Now you are at TWRP
6. Install SuperSU (root)
- Install SuperSU zip that has already been copied to your phone using TWRP (use the Install mode)
7. Reboot the phone
- Use reboot function in twrp
8. Profit
Theoritically the above things works but I have some issues following the above :
- After step 4, after recovery being flashed with TWRP seems like my phone Boot Partition is being overwritten too
- So when I rebooted the phone, it boot to TWRP instead
- So I tried to re-flashed the recovery with the original EMUI rom recovery (go to the folder "2.P8Max_Official_Recovery(For_restoration)" to find the original recovery.img). Also note that in the this folder, the adb and fastboot is only for mac. The one for windows use it in the tools
- This is done by going to fastboot again, then do command : fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
- This time using the original recovery
- Now when I rebooted the phone, it goes to EMUI recovery, then I just clicked restart to system or something
- After this, everything fixed, and I have SuperSU install and phone rooted
You can follow the above, but do it at your own risk, I am not responsible if your phone brick hehehe..

Instead of flashing the recovery to the phone you can just boot it one time. Just use fastboot boot recovery.img instead. This will load twrp and not flash it.

Speaker is damn good... but when playing games or watching movie, it is covered by the hand... so it would be better if the speaker is front facing..
otherwise it's good... but I do hate EMUI though... its making the experience sluggish...

The stock recovery when it's launched, it's in English, dun worry I have re-flashed it as I mentioned in the prev post..
Anyway the stock recovery is extracted from the current available ROM for P8 Max, which is in chinese. There is no international ROM available yet for this phone.

[GUIDE] Fix bricked ZE550ML/ZE551ML (USB logo) and install Marshmallow

EDIT3 15/08/2018 - Some links broke. I found a better way to get the files: go to this thread (RAW firmware collection) by RealYoti here : https://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone2/general/z008-z00a-z00d-z00x-raw-fw-collection-t3448966
All the files are here and they will never expire
In case of problem I still have the files on my computer, maybe one day I will upload them myself on my web server
EDIT2 07/06/2017 - I updated links. + INFO: My ZE550ML phone bricked again, but this time with no USB logo and no vibration at boot. The only tutorial that worked for me is the one from Tech YouTubers channel (click to go to their YouTube channel). Please check their tutorials, in case they made a new one. Try multiple tutorials, for me only an older one worked: this one! (during the video tutorial, I was somehow blocked after flashing img files: black screen. But, I managed to run my own guide again, and this time it worked! The video says to flash ZE551ML xFSTK file on ZE550ML device, and flash ZE550ML xFSTK file on ZE551ML device. It allowed me to boot my device on fastboot but it prevented me to boot Android after flashing the correct ZE550ML img, so I had to flash, normally without reversing files, xFSTK ZE550ML config on my ZE550ML to make it work, then use my guide. good luck You can also try directly my "standard" tutorial below, or trying it after trying the Tech YouTuber's one, hoping finally you'll unbrick your device
EDIT 03/09/2016: Updated RAW links, taken from amtech.vn. and new ZIP files from ASUS.com
Hello, just after solving my problem I wrote a guide of everything I did to unbrick my ZenFone 2 ZE550ML (bricked after installing OTA update for Marshmallow Beta).
This is a "duplicate" of my last post on this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3405331
because I want to help people who are trying to unbrick their ZenFone 2 ZE550ML or ZE551ML
Here is a detailed guide of everything I did to unbrick a Marshmallow ZE550ML stuck on USB logo with lost bootloader without losing any data or setting, everything like before bricking in my case (except settings of some non-system apps, can't figure out why) :
(Note: I recommend you to charge your ZenFone for a few hours as soon as you'll get fastboot menu at step 1, so it will not shutdown... Even if it's not turning on the orange LED, it's charging )
(WARNING : these are the steps I had to do in order to unbrick MY phone without losing data and installing Marshmallow. For your phone some steps might be unnecessary, if you're lucky... I know this is a very long guide but I had to do this in MY case)
(The whole guide is a "modified" version of this guide by Summit007s)
Step 1. Flash basic bootloader with xFSTK Downloader to boot fastboot
I had, first, to switch to advanced startup with support for unsigned drivers (video tutorial here),
install Asus USB drivers (link to Asus USB drivers here - note: video tutorial to install drivers from inf (the inf file for the driver is Android\android_winusb.inf) (repeat for every device available : ADB Interface, Bootloader Interface, etc...) )
and IntelSocUSB driver (link to IntelSocUSB driver 1.2.0 - Note: Before finishing IntelSocUSB setup it will ask you to configure a device : you'll have to connect your ZenFone 2 using an USB cable to your computer, while it's displaying USB logo, and WAIT FOR DETECTION IN Device Manager as "Moorefield device" under "Intel Soc" section),
to flash a fastboot bootloader (link to xFSTK_ZE550ML-sal358-amtech.vn for ZE550ML / link to xFSTK_ZE551ML-sal358-amtech.vn for ZE551ML) using xFSTK Downloader (link to xFSTK Downloader 1.7.0)
(guides for everything in this step 1: english version - same in vietnamese with screenshots and valid links - detailed PDF for xFSTK with screenshots). => phone boots on fastboot
Step 2. Flash a lollipop ROM (or Marshmallow raw image from the raw fw collection but I did not test it) with Asus Flash Tool to repair fastboot info (like serial number) and access recovery if you want to install Marshmallow from a zip
In order to get a working recovery menu (because I found a zip for Marshmallow but no raw, I'll have to install a recovery),
I had to install Asus Flash Tool (NEW link to Asus Flash Tool 1.0.0.45),
UPDATE Some links broke so I suggest you to download the raw firmware from this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone2/general/z008-z00a-z00d-z00x-raw-fw-collection-t3448966, there are Marshmallow raw firmware so you can skip step 3. I havent tried myself for now.
flash a raw file (go download it from the raw collection) on ZenFone 2 ZE550ML using Asus Flash Tool (Model: ZE550ML - wipe data : no)
OR FOR A ZE551ML flash a raw file (NEW link to WW_ZE551ML_2.20.40.184_20160504.raw) on ZenFone 2 ZE551ML using Asus Flash Tool (Model: ZE551ML - wipe data : no)
(guides for everything in this step 2: english version - same in vietnamese with screenshots and valid links)
BUT because Asus Flash Tool will wipe everything except user data and change your serial number from 0123456789ABCDEF to your legit serial number, flashing will NOT work and process will be ENDLESS because serial number has changed so phone is not found and you're not warned of that by Asus Flash Tool.
After 20 minutes of "OKAY" status displayed in green text on your phone, after 20 minutes of "a500cgfastboot.exe" running in task manager,
I think you can safely unplug USB cable, abort Asus Flash Tool by closing this software, killing "a500cgfastboot.exe",
don't restart the phone, just plug it back to your computer and reopen ASUS FLASH TOOL (notice serial number change in ASUS FLASH TOOL) and flash again with same settings but the new serial number (different from 0123456789ABCDEF).
This flash should work, after an hour or less you'll see in Asus Flash Tool that it's finished.
If it did not work, then you can reboot the phone and try again
Step 3. Flash Marshmallow zip with adb sideload, if you didn't installed it with a raw at step 2
Finally, you'll have to shut down your phone,
boot in recovery mode (guide is here),
connect it to computer, select "apply update from adb",
install adb (link to ADB Installer 1.4.3 - Note: install it system-wide but don't install Android USB drivers) on your computer,
download zip OTA for Marshmallow (NEWEST official link to UL-Z008-WW-4.21.40.191-user.zip for ZE550ML / NEWEST official link to UL-Z00A-WW-4.21.40.223-user.zip for ZE551ML),
open a command prompt in the folder where you downloaded files (using "File > Open command prompt > Open command prompt" in the Windows Explorer's ribbon), then type :
Code:
adb devices
to verify that your phone is detected (you should see your serial number in cmd),
then type the following command to flash Marshmallow stock (zip is NOT pre-rooted if you want to root you'll have to do it after) :
ZE550ML
Code:
adb sideload UL-Z008-WW-4.21.40.191-user.zip
ZE551ML
Code:
adb sideload UL-Z00A-WW-4.21.40.223-user.zip
It may take a while decompressing then sending to phone. Then select "wipe cache partition" in your recovery menu,
wait until you see again the menu (so, wait until end of wiping cache), and select "reboot").
If you want more details for each step, just ask in the comments! Don't forget to read the other guides linked in the steps (for example, the one for xFSTK)
Now pray, and your device SHOULD magically boot the latest beautiful stock Marshmallow ROM from Asus, with all your data (except, maybe, settings of some non-system apps), exactly like before you bricked it.
It worked for me, but with the right new files it should work perfectly for you...
I hope you'll appreciate this "googling" work
Thank you
Thank you for sharing this information dude.. This is a helpful one.. It will surely be of greater use soon..
Thanks man u saved my zenfone 2 ze550ml. I tried various tutorial and videos but things didnt work as old files for z008 didnt work. You got the right files and steps. Cheers and keep up the good work
Hopefully this puts an end to all new unbricking threads *thumbs up*

Hello,
I just tried it again and I can confirm that www.asus-zenfone.com is the right password for the archive, as seen on the original website :
http://www.asus-zenfone.com/2015/12/download-asus-flashtool-10014-for-windows.html
Download the RAR on your computer and open it : your archive opener software will ask you for the password only if you want to extract file. You can still see the list of file without password
Currently stuck at the end of step 1. :crying: any recommendations? Uploaded a picture of where xFSTK says as an error.

That means the PDF could be wrong using five 0's. Might want to add that as an edit to step 1 for anyone else that may experience the samething.

Theres vid tutorial in my signature thats shows this and also how to restore serial :good:
THANK YOU !
You can find the solution HERE :

http:// forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone2/general/unbrick-vid-tutorial-restore-serial-t3411064

BUT because Asus Flash Tool will wipe everything except user data and change your serial number from 0123456789ABCDEF to your legit serial number, flashing will NOT work and process will be ENDLESS because serial number has changed so phone is not found and you're not warned of that by Asus Flash Tool.
After 20 minutes of "OKAY" status displayed in green text on your phone, after 20 minutes of "a500cgfastboot.exe" running in task manager,
I think you can safely unplug USB cable, abort Asus Flash Tool by closing this software, killing "a500cgfastboot.exe",
rebooting phone (notice serial number change in fastboot info on phone's screen) and flash again with same settings but the new serial number (different of 0123456789ABCDEF).
This flash should work, after an hour or less you'll see in Asus Flash Tool that it's finished.

What is worked for me :
1°) Using XFSTK > -- Do not hesitate to use another computer OR Reinstall only XFSTK (Change the Folder too) if you are "ATTEMPTING #20" / "errors encountered during download. aborting" / "firmware download completed. continuing to os" --- i had these msg then i shutdown the phone an plug it to his power for all the night then it worked at first try
Then you are on "Weird Flag" then BOOTLOADER with "123456789ABCD"
2°) Use Asus FlashTool with the RAW File (WIPE : NO)> DO NOT REBOOT THE PHONE After it says "RESULT : OKAY" on the Phone
-Close Asus FlashTools only (do not close the task - VIDEO : https:// bambuser.com/v/6355633)
-Relaunch Asus FlashTools
-UNPLUG the USB Cable then Plug it back directly
-Wait 10 sec -> You will have your serial number on Asus FlashTools
>>> Reuse your RAW File with Wipe Yes then it Works
I even use ADB Sideload to upgrade to MM
Thanks A LOT for bringing back to life my ZENFONE 2

Anyone have the RAW image for Marshmallow yet? Kind of old to keep flashing Lollipop first, only to sideload later.

Hrllo yesterday i update to android M now i have bricked ZE 550ml. Follow this guide im on fastboot screen and when flash raw file from lolipop because i didnt find marshmalow raw phone boot. Step 3. Flash Marshmallow zip with adb sideload, if you didn't installed it with a raw at step 2
Finally, you'll have to shut down your phone,
boot in recovery mode (guide is here),
connect it to computer, select "apply update from adb",
install adb (link to ADB Installer 1.4.3 - Note: install it system-wide but don't install Android USB drivers) on your computer,
download zip OTA for Marshmallow (NEW official link to UL-Z008-WW-4.21.40.112-user.zip for ZE550ML / NEW official link to UL-Z00A-WW-4.21.40.134-user.zip for ZE551ML),
open a command prompt in the folder where you downloaded files (using "File > Open command prompt > Open command prompt" in the Windows Explorer's ribbon), then type :
adb devices (null)

Man, i am so ****ing happy.. My phone wasn't available for 2 weeks and this was a very bad experience for me. I fixed it because of you. Thank you so so so much!
Stuck in the first step!
Hello, currently my ASUS Zenfone 2 is bricked because I tried flashing the released Android Marshmallow ROM on TWRP.
After 10 minutes of flashing my device abruptly shut down and now it can't even show anything on the screen when I turn it on (phone still buzzes but not even a dead android icon is shown--just dark unlit screen).
I followed your instructions and I got stuck in step 1 when trying to install the drivers using PowerShell. I was able to install the .inf from the folders "MTP" and "tethering" but the one in "android".
May I have some assistance to the next step gentlemen?
I believe because of this my computer could only detect my phone as the "Moorefield Device" for more than a second.
Thank you,
Tom

Your waiting Time IS Now Finished Here is Complete Guide to Root Doogee X5 Max Pro install twrp And More,
Hit :good:
ADB & Fastboot
Before doing most things mentioned below you will need "adb" and "fastboot" installed. Two of your options are to install the Android SDK Tools or the Minimal ADB and Fastboot tool. If you are somewhat new to this I highly recommend the second one. Go here, download the latest version (1.3.1 as of this writing), and install it. When setup is complete you should have an icon for the Minimal ADB and Fastboot tool.
Note: I highly recommend you add "C:\Program Files (x86)\Minimal ADB and Fastboot" to your PATH variable in Windows. This way you can open a Command Prompt anywhere and use adb or fastboot.
1) Unlock Bootloader
Power on the phone and skip through all of the setup options
Go to Settings -> About device
Tap Build number five times to enable Developer options
Go to Settings -> Developer options
Enable OEM unlocking
Enable USB debugging
Plug the phone in to your PC and authorize it
Open a Command Prompt
Type adb reboot-bootloader
The phone should reboot and in a very tiny font at the bottom you should see => FASTBOOT mode
Type fastboot devices to verify that your PC sees it correctly
Type fastboot oem unlock
Press Volume Up to say Yes and wait for this to finish
Type fastboot getvar all and look for (bootloader) unlocked: yes
Type fastboot reboot
You should see your phone reboot a couple times as it erases the phone
Install twrp-
Power on the phone
You can configure your phone now or just skip through all of the setup options and do that later
Go to Settings -> About device
Tap Build number five times to enable Developer options
Go to Settings -> Developer options
Enable OEM unlocking
Enable USB debugging
Plug the phone in to your PC and authorize it
Open a Command Prompt to wherever you extracted the .img file
Type adb reboot-bootloader
The phone should reboot and in a very tiny font at the bottom you should see => FASTBOOT mode
Type fastboot devices to verify that your PC sees it correctly, rename twrp to recovery.img
type fastboot flash recovery recovery.img to flash recovery
Type fastboot reboot
Rooting-
Download BETA-SuperSU.zip and save it to the phone's internal memory or an inserted microSD card
Plug the phone in to your PC
Open a Command Prompt
Type adb reboot recovery
You should now be in twrp. Go to Install zip, find SuperSU.zip, and install it
When it finishes go to Go Back -> Reboot Phone -> No
Once the phone boots up launch SuperSU and configure it as you like
Other Solutions-
i have doogee x5 max-s (i geuss limited editon in algeria ) with mtk6735 . i do evrything and all steps but when i reboot to recovery mode i have ( no command ) in the screen .... how to fix that ? sorry for my ****ty english XD
I had the same Issue but i have found a solution!
After you have flashed the twrp recovery, dont reboot the phone! the "recovery.sh" will replace the twrp on every boot!
Just pull off the battery after flashing, disconnect usb and put the battery back in to the phone.
Now get in to the recovery by pressing volume up and power button together until the select bootmode menue appears.
select recovery with the volume up button and enter with the volume down button.
and now you should be in the twrp main menue.
i hope it works for you too!

It does not work from step 12, all the drives are correctly installed and windows recognizes the cell, the recovery image is in the internal memory and also in the sd but of the error "can not load Recovery.img". I tried all the tutorials on the net to do root and nothing worked. The flash does not recognize to pass the recovery also the installed drivers because windows recognizes the cell phone.

Flash does not pass the file in the download only option, the process does not start. I reinstalled ROM by firmware mode all ok, but the process of passing recovery on command 12 and 13 of the error message. I manually copied the recovery to the sd and internal memory but also from the error. Does not find the file speaks that it is not a command found.

Until today I could not do root on x5 max pro. In the method below even downloading the twrp when starting with the power + volume down button start with a menu in Chinese and if you start with volume up + power goes in the default recovery mode.
Same as Pitro1 I am on 16.01 update and I cannot install twrp no matter what I try.
I tried x32 and x64. I tried rebooting directly on recovery or first load system and then adb reboot recovery. I tried to format all first (now I lost my Imei and so on lol). I downgraded and updated again. Downgrading works only with 26.12 version. All others are giving me Colorado lines on the screen and nothing else...
OEM unlock, file transfer, adb, fastboot, drivers detection, are all working good. Only I cannot install twrp...
Also I cannot write nvram nor with SN Writer 2.1504 nor with Imei & SN Writer 1.7.2, MetaAP mode fails all the time...
I'm just about to send it back...

How old is your phone and what build version was it at before you started? Because this doesn't work on mine. Which of the "Android 6" ROMs did you flash to start with as I've tried flashing mine back to an earlier one in case it's something with the later stuff that my phone has come with but they either don't make a difference or they won't even boot.
I tried the method in the first post here and the phone wouldn't even boot (switch on and you get the Doogee logo in silver for a few seconds then it reboots and does the same again). I had to flash the stock ROM from NeedROM to get it working again.
I've tried flashing TWRPx32 and x64 available NeedROM both with SPFlash tools and with ADB. Generally flashing it with ADB from the command line leaves the phone in that boot-loop. If I flash it with SPFlash when you try to boot into Bootloader afterwards you get the Doogee logo in silver for a few seconds then it seems to reboot again on it's own and boot normally - you don't even get the menu to choose Fastboot, Recovery or Normal. From then on trying to boot to the Bootloader gives you the menu but choosing Recovery gives you the standard recovery.
It's almost as if something is overwriting the recovery partition with the original after I flash TWRP onto it.
Anyone got any suggestions about where I might be going wrong or a way around whatever additional security they might have put in there?
Hi. I have tried to root my x5 max pro with flash tools to load TWRP, but it always restarts normally and the TWRP does not come out. I found you and I started to try this method to load the TWRP. Does everything good, unload bootloader and load recovery, but loading the TWRP gives me error .:
Device unauthorized.
This adb's $ ADB_VENDOR_KEYS is nor set; Try adb kil-server if that seems wrong
what I do?
rooting X5 Max pro in Ubuntu 16.04
Hi all, this is my first china phone and I basically bought it only to experiment, I'm a linux power user but this is the first time I 'play' with an android OS.
thanks to multiple guides and posts on this and other forums I'm getting somewhere and learning a lot about how to manage an android OS, I'm sharing a bit of info I unovered about doing this under ubuntu but I'm also stuck and in need of guidance, please help me.
Linux specific issues:
I'm running ubuntu 16.04 LTS, installed fastboot and adb tools from ubuntu repos, with these tools and no other modification to my system I could follow the tutorial on how to unlock the OEM bootloader with adb and fastboot.
accordingly to this post about SP flash tool in linux you might need to blacklist a modem manager module in order for SP flash tool to connect to the phone, you also need to install usb development tools (package libusb-dev) and check through dmesg that your linux OS can actually properly read mediatek usb devices.
After following the above mentioned instructions (both the linux sp flash tool tutorial and the bootloader unlocking howto) I could get SP flash tool linux (multiple version) to see the phone after you connect it while SP flash is downloading the new recovery image and flash it with an ok message.
If you get stuck with a BROM error 1013 remember to start sp flash tool with root privileges.
Phone specific issues:
I can get SP flash tool to flash my phone recovery with an ok message confirmation but the phone keeps rebooting with doogee recovery and not twrp. I'm on the newest stock ROM update (20170116) as of current post date. I've been using 32 bit TWRP images from multiple sources and linux version 5.1620 of spflash tool from their website
so my questions are as following:
1) after reading other posts I think I might have to play with different versions of SP flash tool and TWRP until I get the right combination, I think I might be using 64bit spflash tool for linux to flash a 32bit rom or something like that, can anybody confirm precise version number of the stock rom, TWRP and SP flash tool that worked out for you?
2) should I try to install the whole stock ROM posted in this chinadevices thread before trying to flash only TWRP recovery? please also check the linked thread for multiple custom ROM being ported to this phone, please also note that the full stock rom this poster uploaded (it's in the "all firmware" link) contains another flashing tools with chinese instruction called MultiDownloadTool.
www.china-devices.com/forum/index.php?threads/doogee-x5-max-pro-mt6737-custom-roms.20527/
3) I don't have access to a windows installation right now, but I do have a Win10 VM under Vmware workstation 12 pro, so I could try windows version of sp flash tool, do you guys think that USB passthrough would work?

Same here. May a work around would be finding out the oem commands in fastboot. I have seen a tutorial to get them, but you have to be root: https://www.xda-developers.com/how-to-discover-hidden-fastboot-commands/
I search a simple method
Why all so complicate? I am searching for a simple way to root.
For my old Doogee X5, I discovered just
update-ROOT-DOOGEE_X5.zip
Copy the zip to the micro-SD-card
Settings -> Phone info -> Update -> menu "update local" -> choose zip from micro-SD-card.
Start update.
That's all!
Now I search for such a simple solution for my new Doogee X5 MAX pro.
I do not want any methods with "volume down power", because my X5 MAX pro has the menus after "Volume down power" start in Chinese language.

Hi there,
I just tried the first file you posted, (twrp-x32-rom), and this one works for me after all previous attempts to boot up TWRP failed. Thanks for the link !
What I had tried before:
I have a relatively new X5 Max Pro, which I ordered a week ago. I updated the firmware to the newest version (20170116) using the OTA update function.
Then I tried to flash TWRP using the files from "needrom.com" which seem to have worked on older versions of the phone/firmware, but did not work for the newer versions.
I tried 32bit and 64bit TWRP versions and flashed them with SP flash tool, but when pressing Vol+/Power the phone would not boot into TWRP recovery. Insted, when selecting "Recovery" from the boot menu, the phone would show the Doogee logo in silver, then blink once, then boot up normally. When repeating this process, then phone boots into Stock recovery, indicating that the TWRP I flashed was replaced by stock recovery.
However, I just flashed the recovery.img from "TWRP LATEST" (the first file posted by Neaw) with SP flash tools and was finally able to boot into TWRP. I installed the superSU-zip 2.79 included in the link, and I am now rooted. Once again, thanks for posting this :good:
