In-App Picture Quality on Huawei Mediapad M3 downgraded - Huawei Mediapad M3 Questions & Answers

Hello XDA Community,
I am a fresh new member and I had a little question. My Girlfriend wanted to buy a new Tablet to use it primarily to browse the Internet and have a device to show her design work (through Tumblr, Pinterest, Chrome, etc.). After some search, we had two possibilities the older iPad Mini 2 or the Huawei Mediapad M3. I advised her to take the MediaPad M3 (8.4 inches) as it was newer and had better performances and a better screen. However, since the beginning, we found out that the pictures rendered in apps such as Google Chrome, Tumblr, Pinterest, etc. are scaled down and look pixelized. However, the screen resolution (1600 x 2560) is great and when clicking on the actual showed images the tablet shows them in the original quality.
Is there any way to modify the settings of the apps to show the full quality pictures right away?
Any help would be much appreciated as this became a real frustration in using the tablet.
The tablet runs EMUI 5, has the Android version 7.0.
Thank you!

DJI GO app problem

Hi guys,
For those who do not use this app - it is used with DJI company drones. I have Phantom 3 standard version.
When drone broadcast live video view to my phone I see it all messy with purple and green lines (see picture attached).
In photo mode it happen only when I set 16:9 aspect ratio. It works well on 4:3.
Video recording mode is only in 16:9 so I always see this messy view. As far as I understand, my cell phone does not support 16:9 aspect ratio.
Tried to question DJI support, but they told me this is problem with my galaxy SIII I9300.
Do you have any ideas how to solve this problem? Would custom rom or kernel help with it? Or maybe there is a fix ?
I use stock 4.3 android.
Sorry for my bad English,
and thanks in advance.

Hello, As DJI updates there GO app more devices start to become less compatible, This issue is also known to happen when aircraft and app firmware are mismatched. They have a list of devices i just copied this from DJI's website
Android Version v2.8.0.
Requires Android 4.1.2 or later.Compatible with Samsung tabs 705c, Samsung S6, Samsung S5, Samsung NOTE4, Samsung NOTE3, Google Nexus 9, Google Nexus 7 II, Ascend Mate7, Huawei P8 Max, Huawei Mate 8, Nubia Z7 mini, Sony Xperia Z3, MI 3, MI PAD, Smartisan T1.
from my experience you can cnange ROMS on some devices and have this work, My experience was it made the the app run way better but this is not always the case, for instance I just loaded a fresh new CM 13 Rom on my Droid razr XT912, the Rom is super clean of bloatware and is supper fast, I enabled USB debugging but when I connect the RC (DJI remote controller) to the Phone. I don't get the USB debugging authorization box so in my case the ROM upgrade did not help I tried two versions of the ROM something is not right with the That version of the ROM on that specific device, I was able to load (CM 12 on an HP 21 Slate tablet) and have had really good luck with it. I say try it and if it don't work go back back stock. I'm asking around because I want this issue Fixed :silly:

Netflix HD and more on Mediapad M3

Hello. I am very interested in this tablet and I want to know if there is anybody using it with Netflix and if Netflix is streaming in HD or fullHD. I have the middle plan that allows for HD and fullHD when possible. I did not find an answer anywhere in the forums. It could help other people interested in it. I am also interested if anyone ran this app and checked for Widevine level there https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo. This is showing beyond any doubt what is supports. It should have Widevine level 1 there to have Netflix and other streaming apps run in HD or more.
Edit: I asked on Softpedia forum and I found the answer. It has Widevine L3, it is not certified for HD or bigger quality streaming. The screenshot does not belong to me.
I have a plan that allows for HD and UHD and I have no problems with Netflix in this tablet. It works great.
You probably do not see that it is not HD. I already ordered one. It is not that easy to see it is not HD on a tablet, but it is ok. I am not bothered by this.

Check this review:

"HD videos, either streamed through Netflix or running off a microSD card, also play without issues."
Hello @30adi, we meet again  I will read you review, I do not pay much attention to those websites, the reviews are not always that detailed, but I trust you
It is not my review, i just found it on the internet. I do not use Netflix to check if it's working properly.
I am pretty sure Netflix won't work in HD or more. That review is just like the others (regarding the video part), we all know that today a tablet should play HD/fullHD or even 4K videos without issues. I will run the video tests from Antutu as soon as I get the tablet. Streaming from Netflix/Amazon Prime/HBO Go is different than streaming an unprotected video file.
https://www.netflix.com/title/70297469
If you want to find out the Netflix bitrate and resolution supported on your device, play this video for a few minutes. The bitrate and resolution should be displayed in upper right. Note that for HD playback, Netflix also requires device certification. They have a list of Android devices that they support:
https://help.netflix.com/en/node/23939
It's pretty arrogant for a company to make it so difficult to access HD content from Android. I wouldn't give them my money.
HD video restricted at Level 3
Hi, just upgraded my tablet to Huawei M3 (from Nexus 7 2013). The hardware and resolution is quite high-end but I can't stream Netflix in HD! This link explains why:
https://www.xda-developers.com/android-netflix-hd-amazon-prime-video-hd-drm/amp/
I've been streaming Netflix HD for years with the Nexus 7 and when I run the app 'DRM Info' on my old Nexus it confirms it supports Level 1 Widevine DRM and thus provides genuine HD playback.
However, Netflix on the new Huawei M3 is restricted at 480p and the picture quality is very poor compared to the Nexus 7. DRM Info app confirms it is restricted to L3 Widevine and there appears to be no workaround until Huawei provide a firmware update. Unless anyone knows any workaround? DRM Info screenshots are at foot of post.
Other video content like BBC iPlayer HD is also restricted and someone also mentioned Amazon HD is also restricted.
I'm not keen on Apple or Samsung and try to support other manufacturers but it's really disappointing that 5 years after I bought my Nexus 7 my new M3 tablet is held back by Huawei.
There is also feedback on forums that the brand new Huawei M5 is also restricted in the same way, so that route is closed as well.
I'm still within the return period so I'm going to return it and really have to do my homework before I buy another tablet. Any ideas would be gratefully received ? Approx £300 budget.
@DougMacp: I do not know why you say resolution is restricted at 480p. I get a sub 720p resolution (960x540) and it looks good enough. Unfortunately there is no 7 or 8 inches tablet with DRM level 1 under 300 GBP, unless you are ok with an old device like Galaxy Tab S2.
Sub HD streaming
Thanks for reply. You seem to be right - tough getting hold of a non-samsung,non-apple 8 inch tab with L1 widevine. I don't see why I should be paying Netflix for HD and getting a low resolution that was common 15 years ago so I'll return the M3 and stay with the Nexus 7 for now.
The Mediapad M5 recently got L1 via OTA update, there's still hope

@npg500: really? Have someone with a Mediapad M5 (the 8 inches version) save a printscreen of DRM Info app.

It seems to be the M5 10.8 inch...
German thread: https://www.android-hilfe.de/forum/...kein-hd-streaming-moeglich.870606-page-3.html
@npg500: I read in the M5 thread that there are just promises for now. I highly doubt that ME would get Widevine L1 through an OTA update. Only M5 would, in my opinion.
Edit: M5 10 inches version did get the DRM update via OTA. It was confirmed on XDA too https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=76357800&postcount=165. Nice one. I did not find this thread before.

Firmware B307 (June 18) still not better than L3
Gesendet von meinem BTV-W09 mit Tapatalk
Yes, it looks like Widevine level did not change (WiFi only version).
It looks like Mediapad M5 8.4 (WiFi only) is in the list of HD streaming devices (https://help.netflix.com/en/node/23939). I do not understand why the WiFi only version is there and not the LTE. Also, the LTE version for the 10 inches M5 is in the list too (not the WiFi only version). Really poor decisions by Huawei.
after sending several mails to the Huawei support I got feedback today from the development team that an OTA Update is currently work-in-progress to bring the L1 certification to the Mediapad M3 Lite soon
@dada124: that would be next to awesome, but Mediapad M3 also needs it. Such a big and good screen is not used at its full potential. I may even give up on watching Netflix on the TV (TV Netflix app was not updated at all, it is missing subtitles) or even on the hacked TV box.

Badly calibrated display of Huawei M3

With each passing day, I just can't fully enjoy using my Huawei M3, the screen badly calibrated in comparison to my iPhones and Galaxy s7 (In basic mode). I purchased the tablet solely for watching movies and reading comics as it's one of the few tablets that has 16:10 aspect ratio but I can't use it as the colors are very inaccurate . Even the lenovo tablet that I've purchased for less that $80 has far better color that it is. It seems that a lot of colors are off but most importantly is that the gamma is obviously too high.
So my question would be:
1.) Does EMUI 5.0 improves the colors or it stays the same as it was originally?
2.) Is there any way to calibrate the display? I've tried Cf.lumen and it hits the performance quite badly.
Really???
I do not agree, for me the screen is very good

Software (ease of use, features, etc)

When you hand your phone to granny to take a photo of you, can she get the job done? Rate this thread to express how you deem the Huawei P30 Pro's camera software. A higher rating indicates that the software is easy to use, fast, uncluttered, and inclusive of advanced features for when you need them.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
In fact, Huawei has done a great job in bringing up few additional features and optimizing the camera on P30 pro. Wide angle dual window, 50X zoom are just couple of additions.

I had a Google pixel 2xl before switching to the p30 pro. Before that I had either nexus phones or Samsung Galaxy phones. I have a strong preference for stock android Vs manufacturers muddling with android. After messing about with the p30 for s couple of hours I have a fairly close to stock experience So it is possible to get a google stock feel Vs EMUI. I moved away from pixel as allot of the promised features such as call screening have still to make it to the UK. Plus the notch on the pixel 3 XL is far to big. Could not bring my self to purchase it.. yuck. Tear drop is just about bearable especially when using dark theame which I think was switched on in the power settings.
So you can get an android stock feel from the Huawei and this is from someone who used to be a dedicated nexus / pixel boy. I wish manufacturers would concentrate on getting the hardware correct Vs messing with the software.
The camera app itself looks a little dated from the vs the pixel. I prefer Google's camera app. However as soon as you use the zoom function wow. The UI is not important. The feature is a game changer for a phone. Massive step forward and it is so easy to use.
How near to stock?

Hi just curious as to what you used to get the P30 Pro as near to stock as you could?
I am using Nova Launcher on a Oneplus 3T with Google Contacts and Dialer installed (non root) and it's great, but due an upgrade.Do you miss the double press power button to open the camera?
And is it possible to use normal OSD navigation buttons?

You can double tap the volume down button and it opens the camera (default is take a picture).
Coming from Note 8 running OneUI I can certainly say that Samsung with one UI is much more refined and easy to use as compared to EMIUI 9.1.0. One hand usage of the phone isn't so great as most of the options are still located at the top of the screen, unlike one UI. and sadly even the camera UI isnt as refined as the one UI, of course the quality of p30 pro camera is beyond a match. Also there is a weird bug no matter how many times I disable an app like gmail or drive or any other google service if there is any update the app will pop up on my home screen once again.
If the screen is off i can use fingerprint sensor properly. . If i go into the lockscreen its working only with the pin method and no fingerprint are accepted. Is there an option to disable this or its a bug?
resolution of the camera
Hello everyone
I bought a Huawei P30 pro 3 days ago and I wonder why with a 40MP camera we can not take pictures in 16: 9 when holding the phone horizontally
We only have 40MP in 4:3
the full screen format is only available with 6MP
today all screens are 16: 9, if we look at our pictures on the TV we would like to display them in full screen and not with black stripes on each side
I don't understand
cordially

I really want to like it but the P30 pro is just better where it counts

I’ll kick off by saying that I am genuinely not trolling and I really want to like the Samsung S10 plus, I have the ceramic one and it is the nicest in-hand phone and a joy to pick up, it also has a slightly wider screen that I prefer as the P30 Pro can feel slightly narrow and cramped in comparison and I appreciate the higher resolution even if I only really notice it on text if I look really hard.* OneUI is ok these days and it does have a lot of features that I like built in too and it has a headphone jack!
*
it is almost my perfect phone however, the thing is that I actually have a bit of love/hate relationship with it and I have come to think that the P30 Pro is maybe just a better all round phone even if it too has it’s annoyances, **YMMV but for me and here is why:
*
Bluetooth audio - The P30 pro fully supports higher quality Bluetooth audio, the S10 does not.* The S10 defaults to ‘Best Effort’ you can select the ‘Balanced’ 660 kbps setting but you have to do this via developer settings EVERY TIME as it resets back to best effort. The highest quality 990 kbps option whilst selectable is choppy and not useable at all though.* On the P30 Pro, the highest quality option is available, works well and the LDAC settings have actually been put into the normal settings too and stick.* Win win!
*
Camera - The P30 pro camera is significantly better than the S10 and the S10 plus camera is IMO very very disappointing, probably my biggest issue with the phone.* The smudged detail is there all the time although in good light you do have to pixel peep to see it but in medium to lower light the P30 pro just wipes the floor with it, no contest.* Also in medium to low light blurry images are common if there is even the slightest movement in the scene, looking at the exif the S10 always chooses a lower shutter speed than for the same scene, I am assuming this is to try keep the ISO as low as possible.* I think the main hardware is un-changed from the S9 and it shows, Samsung is just not as capable as Google with the computational stuff.** The camera on the P30 pro is just great and has the added cherry on the cake of the 5x zoom too.* Maybe Samsung will up it’s game with the S11/S20 but for me there is no doubt they have fallen behind by skimping on the hardware.
*
Battery – The P30 pro is just better. The S10 is ok but still has that signature Samsung standby drain, they just love draining power when sitting there doing nothing.
*
Signal (Mobile & WiFi)* -* The P30 pro has the better radio(s) by a large margin.* The S10 is terrible on both mobile and wifi and*in a tough coverage area (my current house) The P30 pro will be on circa -100db and perfectly useable, the S10 -119db or worse and struggling.
*
Ultimately the camera and audio quality are the biggies for me, but the radio issue is also a daily annoyance. *The P30 pro has it’s own issues, I wish it had a higher-res screen (although local dimming to avoid PWM is a bonus), EMUI is an acquired taste and one ui is slightly slicker but overall it is hard to argue that for my use at least it does the most important things better.
Interested in the thoughts of anybody else on here who has owned both.

Certainly Huawei do have very good camera's and maybe a few features.
However there's big issues with updates.
After owning a Mate20Pro for a while, carrier updates were very very slow, it took my carrier 5 months to push out the second update. Sure there is a few ways to manually update without bootloader unlock or root, but these are tediously annoying processes, in most cases meaning a complete wipe of the phone.
And then you have the future of updates being released at all if the Huawei/Trump Ban keeps going.
So I guess its a matter of do you want updated or outdated firmware?
Do you want the availability of Google Apps in the future?
For me the I prefer the thought of having latest bug fixes and security updates maybe a few extra improvements.
With Huawei its a game of Russian Roulette.

Totally agree, it's a guessing game with the latest Huawei devices. Their EMUI is improved but it's still buggy especially with regards to background apps. Additionally, even though there's plenty of concerns with what Google's doing with your data, those concerns are minor compared to Huawei. I don't want my data in China's hands. It's common knowledge the Chinese government is deeply involved with piracy and hacking worldwide and there are legitimate issues with Huawei's ability to keep it's/your data out of their reach. Yes, Huawei has stated on numerous occasions they never share data with the Chinese Government but I'm far from convinced.
The issue is only really with new models the P30 and previous have Google apps and get updates.
Honestly I prefer the S10 plus but where it matters (camera, radio and audio quality) the P30 is better.

For Now they do, until Huawei decide they can't be bothered. And theres also the problem with delayed updates.
Like Optus took 5 months after the release to push out the first update for the Mate 20Pro, i spoke with Optus and Huawei, both blamed each other for the delay, when really it was Huawei whom did not release the firmware to Optus.
Interesting you write this, as I upgraded to a S10+ but still use my mate pro 10 for camera work as it's better quality in my opinion, and the battery life on a 2 1/2 year phone is better than my S10+.
There are things that I am enjoying about this phone but it was certainly a shorter than expected honeymoon period with it

I know this is quite old but i dont think i have idle drain on s10+ exynos but i read many had it in the past. It must have been fixed before august 2020 when i bought the phone.
Its quite funny about the camera because i am usually annoyed that s10+ actually doesnt wanna go below 1/50 and increases ISO instead. For example in metro i end up with a shot 1/50 ISO 640 where as it could have been idk 1/20 ISO 200. So they never come out blurry for me because phone prefers fast shutter speed(though a bit soft cuz high ISO). You kinda made me apperciate faster shutter more now . I guess it was updated after you got rid of your phone?
Battery is pretty good imo. Its really good unless im gaming(dead by daylight, very heavy). Then its about 3-3.5hours which is fine i suppose.
About the smudged images.. That was one of the things i was scared most when buying this phone. But after using it for months, (even in the first days) smudge didnt bother me as much as i thought it would. Photos always look amazing overall, white balance, exposure, HDR does a good job. And detail is good enough as well. But side by side im sure p30 would be slightly more detailed. (Though p30 is 10MP so maybe they would be equal?)
When i was shopping for s10+ the biggest contender was p30 for me, it was 1/3 cheaper and 3x optical zoom but what put me off was the colors that came out from the sensors.. In anandtechs review p30 series had serious white balance/color issues and i was really put off by that. And the reason they said was the red blue yellow sensor which gathers more light but has trouble with colors since yellow isnt a main color. Maybe it might have been fixed by now? But i couldnt take the risk of whether it could or would be fixed since it does look like hardware limitation.
About wifi, i do have some wifi related problems, sometimes i have to restart apps for wifi to work for them.
And s10+ uses high gamma at minimum brightness which causes black clipping. It can be fixed for youtube app but if you play a dark game like dead by daylight at min brightness, you will have a lot of trouble on s10+.
Tbh i should have bought mi10 for myself haha. s10+ is a good phone for sure but like you said every phone has its advantages and disadvantages. And i apparently didnt know what i really should have been paying attention to. I was really focused on camera but to be real all flagships have great camera, i obsessed over it for no reason. Mi10 has way better performance and it has a gamma slider and its manual brightness is much higher. (I did a hdr bug on s10+ which allows screen to go much brighter but works only on android 10 so i cant update if i want to keep using it.. also s10+ dims when gaming after it heats up but think mi10 doesnt? Which would make gaming in front of a bright window better but at least 700 nits whenever i want is really good)
Okay i did go off topic a bit sorry. Anyways have a great day xD
