Help! Phone bricked itself using Oreo B2 - Essential Phone Questions & Answers

Hello.
Anyone got the phone bricked while using the Oreo Beta 2? I got my phone last week (bought it from a friend in Dominican Republic)in new condition/box sealed. The thing is that as soon as I opened the box I loaded the Oreo Beta 2 on the phone and I used it fine for a few days. Went on a four day long trip just to have my phone bricking itself using it on the first day of the trip at 75% battery, it does not bootup, no sounds, no image, nothing, came back today having access to a PC, read the forums, tried all the combinations of buttons (long pressing power, power+volup, power+voldown for 45 seconds+) and I get no response from the phone.
Then I connected the phone to my PC (USB-C to USB-A cable) and I get a response, the pc is detecting it as Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008, so there's some hope. I know LG phones can be recovered from this mode using a software called BoardDiag.

Does anyone now any software/guide/method to do this with the Essential? I would like to try this because returning the phone to Essential from here is expensive and difficult.
Any help is appreciated, thank you.

the same to you.

I am currently having the same issue and have had to switch back to my Nexus 6P :'( I have contacted Essential and am hoping they can either somehow fix the issue or RMA the device.

I contacted them too yesterday, got a response stating that I can do an out of warranty replacement for $199... I can't do that, that's like buying the phone again, I would need to pay $200 returning them the bricked one and getting the replacement (I hate customs on this country).

bump

have you tried turning off phone, hold volume dowm, pluging a usb cable then powering on see if that send it to the bootloader?

Yes, no luck on that, phone goes straight to 9008 mode again.

How are you out of warranty? Can't you send it back to your relative and then file RMA in his name to keep it in warranty? I would just do that. You shouldn't have to pay customs on a used device that you state you've owned. I've traveled all over and that's a typical work around to buying things from the states.
Besides you can also show then a receipt that you've already paid them once for it, and that you had to send it back for repairs...

...that's a really good deal tho.

Same boat here. Hard bricked while flashing Oreo beta 3. Phone being recognized as Qualcomm 9008. Completely dead can’t do anything with it. Essential offered to send me a new phone for 199$ which is too much for me.
Anyone found a solution for this hard beautiful brick?
Thanks.

Why aren't they replacing it? Flashing their software shouldn't void your warranty.

Essential have admitted it is down to included usb cable being usb 2 not 3 ,so they should be replacing it FOC

That's ridiculous! They've admitted that their own cables are causing problems and they won't honor your warranty. I smell a class action suit.

I have seen two different issues in this thread.
1. Brick after days of usage.
2. Brick while flashing.
Absolutely #1 should be replaced under warranty.
#2 should be since they have now said that the cable in the box is not good as a data cable. SMFH!

Did they replace your phone? I am in the same boat as yours. I was flashing the Stable build from Essential Website and it failed to flash some files. When I tried to reboot it turned into a very expensive paper weight.
They are asking for a $199 replacement fee, even though I followed the instructions on their page and for some odd reason it failed.

Nope, they didn't. I'm here with this expensive paperweight. I'm not paying those $199.

Any idea yet on how to solve this issue?

Aaaahh!!!! I bricked my phone!!

Hey. Don't laugh at me.... OKay, go ahead laugh!
It wasn't my fault! I bricked my phone while flashing a radio update. I followed the instructions and i seemed to work! And now it wont turn on. I take it there's no way to undo this????
BTW, this is the one i used! DO NOT USE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!
And this is the guide i used .... http://geekfor.me/faq/flash-radio/
EDIT: I talked to Sprint Customer Service over the phone. I told them that this is my second replacement phone (honestly) and it wont turn on anymore. I troubleshooted with them for a while, and then... they sent me out a replacement phone! FREE! Thank you sooo much Sprint. But i still hate you because of 2.1 delays and NO NEXUS ONE?!!!!

So.... There's no possible way to fix it, right?
I have flashed that same radio and had absolutely no issues. You most likely did something wrong. Remember modding your phone in such a way is done at your own risk. I'm sorry to hear you ran into problems because of this.
As a side note, if you haven't already, remove your battery from your phone for 2 minutes and then put it back in and try to boot.

this is why i will not flash any radio's or RUU's to my hero.
i hope you have an extra $100 laying around for an insurance claim? well it may be full price if you cannot restore you phone back to stock before you send it in to sprint.

If the phone is bricked and shows no sign of other damage, Sprint *usually* does an exchange if he has an insurance plan on the phone. As long as he goes in and says "It just wouldn't turn on this morning when I took it off the charger" he should be fine.
It's dishonest and shady, causes a lot of problems and price hikes, but it works :/
some where around here is a guide on how to unbrick your phone using testpoints if worse comes to worse the phones have been going for like 200 on craigslist

simple they can hook it up to their software and get all info off of it. bricked or not, it just depends on what tech you get. if i were the OP id make sure this thing is really bricked and none recoverable before shipping it back.

Dell Streak JTAG Points

Does someone have a pinout of the Streak's JTAG Points?

Hello there !
I wonder if you have achieved anything on the subject ?
I have a bricked dell streak on my hands.....and unfortunately there is no ORT-Jtag available in my town. The only option is to buy ORT-Jtag(in order to unbrick the streak) - but not sure if pinout is easy to get access to.....
Please let me know
Thanks a lot
P.S i have some experience in soldering, electronics, but not sure if ORT-Jtag can be handles by myself

JTAG Problems
I got my Dead Streak brought to life by JTAG (someone else did it) but then I was unable to load firmware. QDL Tool also failed. Then got hold of the older version of QDL Tool called StreakFlash, then QDL , then New Recovery using Multirecovery flasher and then Stock ROM.
Now the problem is that it says "No Sim Card". I have tried all stock roms custom roms but it's still the same. It's wifi is working fine no cell phone.
Please let me know if your's working fine after JTAG.

The kind of development I'm doing currently has no need for a sim card so currently don't have one to test.
Stupidly I tore part of the touch interpreter cable which is integrated into the screen so looks like I'm in the market for a new one (PM me if anyone as one available). It boots but can't test anything else

Nvidia recalls Shield Tablet due to possible overheating

NVIDIA has announced a recall of its SHIELD tablets, sold between July 2014 and July 2015:
Information on how to obtain a replacement device: http://www.nvidia.com/support/tabletrecall
Official nVidia notice: http://nvidianews.nvidia.com/news/notice-for-nvidia-tablet-customers
This should be stickied - this is big news.
Actual Nvidia statement here:
http://www.marketwired.com/press-release/notice-for-nvidia-tablet-customers-nasdaq-nvda-2043927.htm
Coincidentally I'm just awaiting a replacement. My defective unit (not for overheating) reached them yesterday. Hoping they send me out an unaffected replacement by close of play today, though may be subject to delay now I guess.
Yeah new tablet for all \o/
also, double check this: http://tabletrecall.expertproductinquiry.com/registration/registration
how to check battery type on non-stock ROMs?
does anyone know how to check battery type on non-stock roms? I have CM12.1 currently installed and I would rather not need to go back to stock just to find out I have the non-recallable battery type.

The battery type check was added in the latest OTA along with a recall app that is opened if you have the right battery type. You will probably have to flash the new stock build to check.

Have a look at the faq: http://tabletrecall.expertproductinquiry.com/faq/6x1gnn
Q. How do I know if my tablet is affected?
A. The recall includes NVIDIA SHIELD tablets (both WIFI and LTE) sold between July 2014 and July 2015.
Model numbers P1761, P1761W and P1761WX and serial numbers 0410215901781 through 0425214604018 are included in this recall. The model and serial numbers are etched on the left side edge of the tablets and printed on the packaging.
Please go to www.nvidia.com/support/tabletrecall and follow the instructions. You will need to update your tablet with the latest software to determine if your tablet is affected.

I'd like to figure it out too, so while we're here: do we have to re-virgin our tablets to ask for replacement? And if so, how can we unroot and wipe the heck out of it?

Having literally gone through the RMA process myself for an unrelated issue, I'm assuming you complete that online form and they will send a replacement. You have to agree to a statement that your old affected device will be remotely wiped on receipt of your new one. I'm assuming they'll include a prepaid label for you to return it (goes to an address in the Netherlands).
Usual RMA process is you send the defective unit back and upon receipt they will send out the replacement. Has it been made clear what the process is for this recall? It looks to me, given that statement you consent to, they will forward a replacement right away. If so, that is pretty trusting.
I knew unrooting was not a problem, prolly a factory reset suffice but I'm not sure. The problem is the unlocked bootloader. That can't be undone afaik. In any case there is no word about the roms/root/bootloader type we flashed in the meanwhile on the nvidia official faq pages. This an hadrware defect and looks quite serious to them if they ask for a worldwide return, so I'm not even sure we need to worry about whatever software we flashed in

Thanks Cris_c81. Ive to come home and use the reclamation process from the shield tablet.
And Im glad that Nvidia makes it smooth for us consumer to get a safe product now when the current one is proclaimed unsafe to use.
Also, is it ok to make a RMA and then unroot the tablet while I wait for a replacement?
Just did the whole process.
Yes you could call and check your serial number without restoring back to stock, however the RMA process has you using the app( built into the latest OTA) to retrieve RMA code to complete the online process. You do agree to the remote wipe once your replacement is turned on. It also says it will render the tablet in usable. (They likely has a kill switch in the latest OTA also). Just got the confirmation email and it looks to be here in 2-4 weeks. No where during the online process does it say of they want the old device back, however in the email it seems to imply they do. Only way to know for sure is if there is a return postage in the RMA box.

I did the whole process as well for Romania and for some reason i have not received any emails yet -_-
Also i see that they want to return the tablet and i have no problem with that as long as they send any UPS/DHL/DPD courier to my door to pick it up and they pay for the transport since it's their stupid fault.

See this is what I don't know. Because the standard RMA process they ask the customer to foot the cost of paying for FedEx or similar. Unless of course you complain to support and then they send you a prepaid FedEx label, which is what I did

Consider the ginormous screw-up that they did with the battery and reading the process on the page it would seem that they will send you a new tablet and when you open it, the other one will be rendered unusable which basically makes it a giant ball of turd or a brick
Not sure if they want it shipped back or not but by what i'm reading they won't. Even so i don't mind keeping the blank one for spare pieces.

Rooted and screwed....

Bought an edge S7, rooted like I have many of my Samsung devices. (12 of them since 2012).and yes I know the risks. Dropped my phone on table corner and cracked the screen, unusable. So I flashed back to stock and drove to Samsung service centre for a lcd replacement. $336 and a day later I pickup the phone. First thing I notice is a high pitch warning..... Says device is overheating, can't charge, bla, bla bla. So I reboot into recovery and it says device is 90c. Unrealistic temperature, actually impossible. I have flashed many Roms and made lots of androids and it never goes past 42c. I write Samsung repair shop complaining that the device is overheating falsely and I want to bring it back. His response:
Your phone is rooted, it is not performance as a standard function. Only we can replace the mainboard that to solve the issue
Best regards,
So how is this my fault? My edge was working perfectly before I brought it in and now it's my fault it's falsely overheating? Any ideas or advice? Obviously I refuse to pay for something the screwed up. I love Samsung but this is infuriating.
If you live in europe go to consumer protection. If you are currently non rooted and the phone behaves like that, it's obviously got nothing to do with software intervention.
omg it was ok to charge you for the screen... and not telling you is rooted or something back when u ask to bringis back again now its rooted ffs

I've seen a few teardowns with the S7 edge and they probably screwed somthing up when repairing the screen.... Sounds like their fault
... How many days did you have it before it cracked?

UPDATE:
They want to charge me another $350 because the mainboard needs replacement. Says I caused the issue because I rooted the phone. Now the phone reads 90C on TWRP in recovery and tells me I am overheating when I power on the phone.

I left the phone with a cracked screen and I come back with this.
How is this my fault???
Rooting does not cause this.
I know this doesn't help but having read so many Samsung after sales service posts of bad experience post S7 launch, it just bolsters my own personal choice of not rooting until warranty is up. I just don't do it myself. I understand why people want to do it, and the risks are accepted but it's exactly for this type of reason, where you get a company who will use root status as an excuse, why I don't.

Did rooting cause this? Not likely. Is it fair? No. Is it widely recognized that Samsung can, and will, use the fact that a phone is rooted to deny warranty coverage. Yes.

What bugs me the most is that this happened after they gave me the phone. Not before. It started during the botched repair job. Ridiculous. Everyone roots, its part of XDA.
When I had a note 2 I sent it to Samsung to repair, I paid and had it repaired but it was returned to me with other issues, Samsung refused to take ownership and it was my word against theirs. Nothing I could do about it.

Oh I'm not absolving Samsung and as I said, I get why people root right away. Just personally, I don't until warranty is up. Just a choice I make. XDA is much more then just about rooting though.

I don't think he was flaming you for rooting, just explained that Samsung will use rooting against you and that's why he won't root because of this.
I agree with him but I chose to root accepting that Samsung could refuse repair. I recently sift bricked my S7 and knew I couldn't send it to Samsung so i spent days fixing it myself, lookily I did it but if I hadn't, it could have cost me a lot of money. But I accepted that risk when I rooted and I would do it all over again if I had the chance lol
$336 for the screen is way too expensive.
Argue the case with them, be polite and ask to speak to manager.
Failing that Phone them don't give until it's resolved.
Write in explain it was fine prior to screen being replaced.
Is it possible to overheat and damage the cpu or internal components from software changes? unless someone can prove it I thing its very unlikely in your case but maybe not impossible... wish the rest of the world gets it right like Europe and deem rooting a phone not to void the warranty.
nag them till they get sick of you but do be nice, nothing good comes from anger and abuse.

Oh yes, I have over and over. I even emailed Samsung separately. Hoping for a positive result.

It is possible but not as soon as you turn on the phone and it immediately shows 90C which is not possible.

I agree, its absurd. It's like Samsung making money off their customers. Ridiculous.
I would dispute the charges with your CC company until they fix the issue. It sounds like they probably didn't seat the cooling system properly or some other internal board issue.

Unlock Bootloader TMO

Warning, this voids the warranty. Also make sure you backed up what you need to because it will wipe your device clean!
This method works on LG G6 T-Mobile US version.
Very simple to unlock the bootloader. I did. I will be testing if anyone is interested!
General > About > Build number 6 times> go back to developer options. Turn on OEM Unlock, and usb debugging.
FYI, the adb command works when the phone is "charging" you don't have to switch to "file transfer" to do any adb commands.
Connect your phone using the cable. tap okay or give access after you connect to the pc.
open cmd:
adb reboot bootloader
once you're in, type,
fastboot oem unlock
After than it should unlock to verify type:
fastboot getvar unlocked
and it will say yes or no!
then type
fastboot reboot
and you'll be all in!
To relock the bootloader:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot oem lock
To verify your status type:
fastboot getvar unlocked
Does not work for the LG G600L version. adb reboot bootloader just reboots the phone into the system again.

Can you relock the bootloader via "fastboot OEM lock" command?

Yes, I tried it.
Just to mention, the counter up there ( I have in the picture up top) doesn't reset, but the bootloader locks fine with the fastboot oem lock!

Cool.
I'm not too worried about the counter, just the ability to restore if needed & I'm not even too worried about that, however, having the option to do so is always welcome.
I like LG's U/I & feature set, I'm good with TWRP & Root,for Ad Blocking & bloat freezing.......

hopefully we will get twrp and go from there! at least back up!
Does LG actually refuse warranty service on bootloader unlocked devices for unrelated issues (which is technically illegal in the USA, probably EU too, but good luck forcing them to obey the law), such defective hardware components (mic, screen, charge port, infamous bootloop issue...) during the warranty period?
LG reliability has not been good, no way I want to get into a warranty fight with them if they actually reject warranty service based on bootloader unlocking.
Was the unlock counter there on the LG V20? I didn't think so (but don't actually have one), but if not, then that might be reason enough for me to go with the LG V20 instead of the G6, even though the G6 looks pretty nice.
Despite T-Mobile ****ty service in some areas I wouldn't leave T-Mobile aslong as I have JOD I don't need to worry about warranty or whatever and get new phones each time they come out, next in line s8

This is an awesome loophole. Just signed up for JOD. Not too worried about the counter, traded in a Knox tripped Note 5 with no issues when I was on the original Jump.

Yeah, JOD seems like a nice workaround for the warranty issue. I tend to prefer to keep my phones 3 years, sometimes more, so I like buying them, especially if I can get them on sale, but it means I need the warranty to be worthwhile. I like messing around with a new phone, but once I get it working exactly like I want it, I don't like to mess with it a lot, just let it keep chugging until enough generations have gone by that the next phone is amazing. I wasn't quite ready to give up my LG G3, but it's dying...
So given all the LG reliability issues, or even if it was just avg phone manufacturer potential defects, I might have to go V20. Just wish I had seen the President's Day $360 sale in time to snag it!

The V20 is $480 now,not quite the deal from last month, but, still a substantial savings over the original MSRP.

Well, technically the phone is not out yet. I am afraid this phone would be unpopular. Do we need to approach someone and ask for this huge favor? I would be willing to test.
