Relocking the bootloader on the Xiaomi Mi A1 - Xiaomi Mi A1 Questions & Answers

Hey guys.
So I bought the mi a1 and was wondering if any of you could answer some questions that I have.
I was thinking of rooting my phone with magisk and TWRP as custom recovery. My questions are
1) If I relock my bootloader, will I lose root access and TWRP and will it also un-void my warranty ?
2) Will I still get official OTA updates after relocking it?
Thanks

1) With locked bootloader of course you'll lose all your root access and TWRP. It is stated that you MUST unlock bootloader to have root access and TWRP.
2) Lock or not doesn't affect the OTA. I unlocked the bootloader since the very first days and now I'm on the latest Oreo (and living with bugs).

So installing OTA with root won't cause any problems ?

After each update, if I get bootloop I'll just boot into TWRP&flash magisk, done.
But some people have problems, I don't know what they have done so I couldn't say for sure.

And also what about warranty issue. If I relock it, will it un-void my warranty ?

I'm not 100% sure as I don't work for the warranty center but I do think so.
When you mess around with bootloader or root or whatever which isn't official there are risks.

Would you mind to share how you have done that?
This is the tutorial I have used:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/how-to/guide-install-twrp-unlock-bl-flash-t3517379
Just follow carefully every step and make SURE you have all your backups ready just in case....

Thank you. One last question: Can I still receive offical updates when i unlocked the BL and can I just flash SuperSU after installing TWRP?
As far as I'm aware you can still receive updates after you installed TWRP, but not after you unlocked bootloader and/or rooted. You can however flash just about every official OTA via TWRP quite soon after the OTA is released, @DrakenFX and others usually make a TWRP flashable OTA zip within hours of official release.
You cannot install SuperSU without unlocking bootloader via my guide. First install TWRP, then unlock BL, then root. Otherwise you will soft brick your phone.
There are methods around the forum to root without unlocking the BL, but I haven't tried them. Some A2017G users had hardbricked devices when they tried to do this on their devices. G versions seem more prone to get stuck in DFU mode forever.
B03 (or B06) was last version who could be rooted without unlocking. B08 (or B06) added fastboot mode where you can unlock bootloader.
Thank you two

Freshly bought Mi A1 - to OTA or not to OTA?

Hey guys,
want to mod my freshly bought Mi A1 to the max, but I'm not sure if i should OTA first or better start modding right away?
I already unlocked the bootloader and it didnt wipe it - it also has 7.1 installed still. Generally I'm usually reluctant to do official updates because they usually make modding harder - but I tried booting the treble TWRP installer .img through fastboot (without installing it) and it failed because some partition was missing it said.. so I just want to hear if OTA is necessary to use the latest custom roms or if i can keep the old bootloader etc?
Would be cool if someone who knows could say smth about that.
Or is updating through OTA actually recommended even when not planning to ever use stock roms?

If security matters for you yes
The only thing you'll share with a custom ROM is the bootloader
Since may update locking or relocking the bootloader will wipe your data
It's your choice
but it will still work as easy as before to unlock/lock with just a fastboot command, right?
and will a custom rom work with a locked bootloader? Like first unlock, install custom rom + kernel, then relock?

You have to enable it in Developer settings.

It will always be that easy to unlock and relock the bootloader
No don't relock on anything that is out of stock (custom kernel , magisk, custom ROM etc) this will lead to a softbrick and you'll have to be on edl more to reflash a stock rom
What's the interest of having a locked bootloader with a custom ROM? You won't pass the safety net anyway
Just keep it unlock
You can do ota with an unlocked bootloader

alright. thanks very much for explaining in details - exactly what i was looking for.
What's the use of your android one device if you will not update it, that's what you pay for.

hahahaaa exactly the point
well once you have everything "perfectly set up" updates can ruin it. but yea relocking the bootloader really was a stupid idea - it was the idea to make it tamper proof but since custom kernels wont boot with locked bootloader that wouldnt work.

Can I unroot only to update OTA?

I have done the things to unlock bootloader, flash TWRP and roll the phone with magisk.
There is an new OTA just released. Previously with other phone I can use SuperSU to unroot the phone then run the OTA and then reroot it without data loss.
Is it possible with this Zenfone Max pro?

Nope
You need stock recovery as well
And I think a locked bootloader too ... But someone else to confirm on this

Guide to update after TWRP and Root.
If you have altered system in any way(removed stock apps .. changed files) then OTA might cause issues so better to follow above guide.

That is quite a lot of work to do and it will reset the phone. That means I will have to backup and restore as well. I hope someone will come up with a better way to update. I will wait a bit and see.
Thanks!
I have unlocked the bootloader on my asus zenfone max pro m1, but I have not altered with anything else. So will I be able to get system updates on my phone?
Same problem

I also have unlocked bootloader only and I haven't installed any other ROMs... Is it necessary to relock bootloader for OTA update? Because relocking will wipe my data again. I have Asus Zenfone Max pro M1
You will get updates if you unroot and flash stock recovery.(No need for locked bl)..... But it is easier to flash twrp modified update ...
Either way....you will not loose your data

magisk without root

Hello, is possible to have magisk without root or unlock the phone?
And if i root/unlock the phone , i loose the guaranty or not?
Thanks .
You have to unlock the bootloader in order to flash Magisk, there's no way around it. You also cannot relock after flashing it unless you want to hard brick your device.
You shouldn't lose warranty doing so, and anyways you can always relock the bootloader (only after reflashing the stock fastboot ROM!!) to restore your device to its original state.

Excuse me for insisting, but xiaomi does not void the warranty once the root phone or unlock?
why do you want magisk without root? it's pointless.
you have to unlock bootloader to root and take advantage of magisk
you loose warranty when you modify, but it depends - sk.etimes service don't care about mods

Well, there's conflicting statements about it and it may also vary depending on which country...
Anyways there's no permanent "Samsung KNOX"-style trigger in this phone at least. Flashing the stock ROM and relocking will bring it back to its original untampered state (well at least if you didn't wipe efs or persist) so they may never know it was ever unlocked/rooted.
