Ambient Display - Asus ZenFone 3 Zoom Questions & Answers

With our nice AMOLED displays it seems a shame that there's no Ambient Display in our ASUS ROMs. My previous phone had Lineage on it which added it and I've gotten way too used to it.
Does anyone use and recommend any third-party apps to do the same?
I have used Glance Plus which is by default meant for always-on like later Samsung models but I changed the settings so it just comes on with proximity wake (and taking out of pocket) and incoming notifications. Seems good except sometimes the display won't turn off which is not good so I've uninstalled.
I know there's a lot of similar apps available but figured I'd check here first if someone has already tried a few.
In the meantime I'm using Gravity Screen (for the proximity/pocket wake) and Glimpse Notifications for waking on notifications (this app should also do prox wake too but I find Gravity more effective) but it's not the same.

It's not the same thing, but the Zoom does support double tap to wake to see notifications without unlocking.

Miss feature from G3's Lollipop

Hey guys.
For who already updated to v20a,
Have you guys found that the famous new ambient display is missing from our LG ROM.
and the lockscreen that lg made out of 5.0 is too busy to be used.
the unlock area takes almost half of the screen, and can not be hidden, all my notification has been squeezed to the upper half which makes my lock screen very messy. and the lock screen can not simply just using the same live wall paper as my home screen is using.
So my solution for now is still using my ACdisplay as my lockscreen to get all my app notification, but this app hasnt been optimize for 5.0 and it became the most battery consuming app, it takes almost 25% of the battery which is so annoying.
and i dont get heads-up notification for most of my apps, is this just me or you all dont have this?....................
any suggestion? or better alternatives to be using?

Heads up works fine for apps that actually use this feature - most apps have not been updated to work with heads up yet, its not something that every app automatically does.
Your comments on the lock screen are correct, but sadly this was always going to be the case, we had the same problem when jellybean first introduced lock screen widgets, it took a very long time for everyone to change their own UI's to properly accommodate that feature.
I am not sure I know what you mean by ambient display feature?
Edit: Ah the wake up feature - yeah, that is kernel dependant so it is something we could probably put back in with mods etc but it might impact battery life if not done properly - this might be why LG decided to not include it (that and it might be seen to be copying a Samsung feature).

hey man thanks a lot for all the answers,
and your patient to read my crappy English haha
umm i guess i will go back to acdisplay for now, hopefully they will optimize the app for 5.0 soon.
now my battery usage seems weird.
Acdisplay 32%
hangout 22%
google services 13%
others
and now screen only takes 3%.........
guess this is all due to optimization of the apps?
Remember that percentage is a zero sum game. As other things use less power, other things will use a greater percentage of the total, even if not more actual power.
Hey guys new problem.
My g watch is not showing any notification card. All apps
Any suggestions?
Ambient Display, like on the Moto X?
It's not very smart on the G3, as it uses a IPS display. Moto X uses AMOLED, which only lights up non-black pixels, so the Active Display consumes very little battery, while ours consumes almost the same whether it's full black or bright white.
Yeah, why does LG choose to remove features that we could use in their Android L editions? Also the features like L's new battery saving seems to be missing. Idk why they don't just leave all the features in there.
I totally miss having exposed framework.
I have the DS Bat saver, greenify, boot manager and toast notification.

Ambient display for Galaxy S6?

Hi guys, I noticed that Galaxy S6 doesn't have DOZE (lollipop's ambient display) feature.
I searched on google but the only ambient display feature is for AOSP ROMs with Xposed only (module not working on TouchWiz).
So I was wondering if someone will be able to make this feature for TouchWiz too (Xposed or not).
Thanks in advance
I have noticed once or twice if i get a notification from someone on my edge contacts it acts like a ambient display when i picked it up. Dont know if the screen was still on from it coming in or it turned on when i picked it up. But it definately reminded me of my nexus 6 ambient display with the clock lit at a low light state and the notification on the screen
So thats a good sign of it being possible

Lollipop's Ambient Display is not present in Touchwiz. You can download an app from the Play Store called Active Notifications (and one other app by a similar name with similar function) that basically does that exact same thing - and it should work without root.
(Also, side note "Doze" (not DOZE, an acronym) is not part of Lollipop, nor is it related to the Ambient Display feature. Doze is a new feature in Marshmallow that puts the phone into a high power saving mode when it's not being used.)

Lightflow makes screen on 6P randomly show notifs when just sitting there???

Anyone else have issues with Lightflow making the phone screen turn on randomly when sitting on a table? The colors for the notifications are correct, but becausue of the screen coming on alot randomly this is going to kill the battery life. I even enabled a setting to reduce this in light flow but nothing works. Does anyone have lightflow working correctly?
Thanks!!
At the moment the only option is to switch off the ambient display. If there's an outstanding notification or one is getting updated it'll trigger ambient display and lightflow always has an active outstanding notification.
I've put a feature request in to Google to allow some control of when it triggers.
Can you star the issue here*

I don't seem to have this problem. Ambient display only lights up on new notifications, even with the latest Light Flow with persistent notification. I do have issues with light flow losing control on a regular basis and then I just see the standard very slow white led blink regardless of notifications. Activating lock screen promptly fixes and then I see the appropriate color and blink rare from light flow.

Thanks for the explanation. Hopefully u guys find a workaround
I also have had probles with the ambient display turning on seeminly randomly all the time, I didn't know it was light flow..
On another note, I miss the feature were my screen would turn on when I get a text messge (but not dismiss the lightflow) so in case the LED wasn't attention grabbing enough the screen turning on would be. Nexus doesn't seem to do that, can lightflow do this? (turn on the screen for 2-3 seconds right after a new specific notification, say text message?)

Out of curiosity is building the app with the new api's what triggers the need for the notification? Reason I ask is the previous (lollipop api???) version was working fine without the persistent notification on Marshmallow.

Yes that's exactly it.
I'm bringing out a new play store version later today which will be targeting lollipop's API for people who don't mind loosing android 6 specific features (ie runtime permissions, camera flash control) but don't want the notification related issues of apps targeting android 6.
a fine trade off for me. Had to stop using the app because of that for the time being.
Absolutely fine with me as well. Thanks for the great work as always Andrew.:good::highfive:

3rd Party USEFUL Always On Display app?

Coming from a Droid Turbo, Moto's AOD was awesome. Always showed me the time and icons for any notifications - if I wanted more info, I tapthe notification and get a peek (still on AOD) at the info, then could open my phone directly to that app by dragging up.
In contrast, I find Samsung's AOD fairly useless - even the time is often NOT on or bright enough when I really need it. And if you choose the AOD with notifications, they only work for a couple of stock Samsung apps if you happen to use those apps.
Has Samsung opened up the AOD API to third parties to create their own AOD apps? If so, anybody know of any good ones? Or perhaps turn Samsung AOD off and a third party Android app can emulate it? Right now, as is, the Samsung one seems pretty useless to me. And the 3rd party themes they offer for AOD don't change or add to the functionality - just allow optional looks of the same basic function.
Check out these:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.greatbytes.activenotifications&hl=en
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.achep.acdisplay&hl=en
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.anandbibek.notifyfree&hl=en
The last one seems to me to be the most effective.
Edit: You'll want to turn AOD off to use these.
The stock Samsung AOD enables some more optimizations for the display controller, including reducing the number of colours and the refresh rate.
How do I know whether those apps do the same? Is it known how to access the display controller this way, is there an API for that? How could I write an app that uses this?

My previous device was a Moto X and like you I miss some Moto AOD features too.
Anyway, there are ways to tweak a bit Samsung AOD , check this thread: Mod for Always ON Display to Double tap to Unlock possible?? (Nougat)

Notifications similar to moto display?

Coming from a moto x pure. Had moto display set up to light the screen when the device was picked up. Also, any notifications would appear here and a swipe up would open right into the respective app.
With the a7 we get a notification light and fingerprint reader. I'm trying to wrap my head around how to efficiently open notifications without a number of taps. Device is rooted with xposed installed.
So far the best I could come up with was to remap the finger print reader to open the notification bar. This means one tap to unlock, and 1/2 sec or later a second tap to open the notifications. Quickly double tapping doesn't seem to work.
Is there a more elegant solution?
Not sure how well it works with the FP sensor, but AcDisplay is a great alternative.

Thanks. Looking for something more recent. That app hasn't been updated in over a year (11/2015).
How are others dealing with notifications on this phone?
Works great on lineage.
I'm not ready to switch to lineage yet. Also, lack of xposed will mean other solutions to modules like gravity box will have to be found.
It's ironic, when I first got the moto x, I was annoyed at the moto display. After some tweaking, I got it to where the screen only lights up when the device is picked up. Notifications can be somewhat manipulated from this state.
It looks like I'll have to relearn notification usage on the a7.
I use KinScreen to automatically turn on the screen when I open the flip case (uses proximity sensor).
Best thing ever.
