Android Oreo 8.1 On Redmi Note 3 Review! [NOS 8.1] - Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Guides, News, & Discussion

Nitrogen OS was the best ROM I started to like on this Redmi Note 3. Now with the new 8.1 Oreo update, the performance and stability on this device is much better than MIUI. So, Intantly I took my camera and this is my take on the NOS 8.1 for Redmi Note 3. First of all, I customized this phone with Pixel Launcher and reduced the pixel density as prefer to read more on a screen at once.
I used this ROM for like 2 weeks and what I felt was, this is was the best ROM upgrade from the previous NOS nought version. The previous version had problems like SIM detection problem, and lags. As said, the ROM is based on Oreo 8.1. So you get the oreo features like Picture in Picture mode for YouTube, new emojis, smart text selection and redesigned settings menu.
You get to to play with lot of gestures like double tap to switch to previous app and brightness control by sliding over the status bar. These can all be customized in the settings.

But then one problem I noticed on this was display color and sound volume. The screen was not that vivid and sound was too low, so I had to install Agni kernel to fix that. After that, I felt like battery backup and also the charging time had inproved. However, This time the Picture in Picture mode stopped working.I got battery backup of about 5-6 hours and sometimes 7 hours. Charging time was again 2 hours. It could run almost 4 apps in the background without refreshing in my 2gb variant. It was much better than the MIUI ram management, so I liked it.
I won't say that this ROM is entirely lag free. However, it's better than MIUI according to me. You could easily switch between the app's and multitask using split screen. That was indeed a useful feature.
The pre-installed stock camera is not good at all. You can actually get the best camera performance of this Redmi Note 3 using Google HDR+ camera, which I would be reviewing in detail in a few days.
It that worth the review. You don't have the problem of auto exposure and the quality of image that comes out is really good, Although you don't cannot take slow motion video in this app.
Caffeine was one of my favorite toggle which helped me in keeping the screen ON for a prescribed time.
Since this ROM is under development, you can experience small bugs like overlapping notifications on clock during Ambient display. Instagram would crash atleast once in a day specially if you are using its camera. Also, PicsArt was little laggy on this.
Other that that, the call quality and daily web browsing did not all face any issue. VoLTE works, and Goodix also works on this ROM. What doesn't work is VoLTE Video Calling which hopefully would be fixed in the upcoming updates.:fingers-crossed:

Gaming performance and memory optimization
Hei, can you show us the gaming performance of the current ROM version, ive tried this oreo version rom and the nougat stable version is better at gaming (my current rom), my thoughts is the oreo version rom can't optimize the memory while playing games, lagging so bad, but when you play games after rebooting it, it playing smoothly (but still going to lag overtime). Yea the point is can you give your thoughts about gaming performance and memory management of this rom?
Thanks

Android / Samsunsg regress

Hi there,
So I have been using N7000 quite a while now - 2 years or so. And I discovered one, very annoying thing about new versions of android - each one seems to be worse in terms of usability and desktop space usage then the previous one...
Lets start with GB roms - there was 5x5 launcher in home screen and 6x5 in app menu + very useful bottom app dock that visible from desktop (home screen) and app screen. Also - each screen had a number that was shown in the bottom, so you knew where you were.
See picture: gb.jpg taken from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424401 here
Next version - ICS has cut some rows of icons in the app menu and completely deleted bottom app dock. And where the hell is screen number gone? Why??
The good thing about ICS was decent performance and quite good battery life. - Actually, the best one so far on n7000
See picture ics.jpg taken from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1923817
JellyBean - same story less apps rows, everything seems to have more room for itself but it causes more screens and more swyping gestures. 4x4 in home screen is a joke. Having so big screen and using so little of it is pointless. I do not know what were they thinking designing the layout! And how did they manage to release so bugged software causing all kernel wakelocks destroying our batteries?
And finally - KitKat which follows the same direction - less icons in the screen, more touches to get you where you want.
Now regarding AOKP that everybody seems to love here - there is no support of very 'basic' apps that Samsung offers in stock TW roms:
- fm radio
- video calls via 3g
- s note
I can understand that s-note is the samsung specific app, but video calls and fm radio not being supported in 2014 AOKP KitKat roms is regress...
I recon that the next version of Android will have 1 icon and 1 icon for 1 screen - containing 12 screens.
We are putting ourselves in the custody of trying simplify things which are simple enough. Many other examples would be some of the google apps - Talk regressed to Hangouts, Maps regressed to new maps, and simple search app regressed to google now that everybody hates. And did I mention it takes 1 home screen when you swipe left on several devices?
I do not want be involved in the discussion of every single mistake google / samsung / communicy have made. I just wanted to point that the way, we are being directed is clearly a wrong way ahead!

Wow what an analysis. Yes ur right about everything u have said. Each new version of android shows so low mininum hardware requirement, which is not true because once the rom is released its much bigger in size than the previous one. I would like android to get updates like linux. Each edition getting a parallel update. Newer devices gets the newer edition and older devices should get the update of the edition they are already on.
The best performance my note showed was
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app
To an already brilliant post the only thing missing was this statement based on a razor-sharp mind and an unmatched intellectual spirit.
brilliant post. brilliant analysis. plus there are now more non responsive google. same goes for force closing of apps

Graphic tearing in games after Oreo :(

Since upgrading a lot of games (seems to be any that have 3d graphics) experience what looks like tearing of the polygons flashing like crazy that take up most of the screen. It looks like its overlaid as can still make out the graphics underneath.
I have tried a factory reset and not restored any data. Installed 1 game and no difference.
I will downgrade if cant sort this as its unusable for games as it is and 2 hours each way on a train has never been so boring.
Anyone have any ideas?
For normal phone use Oreo seems great, faster and battery life has been no different. (had a new battery and screen fitted under warranty a month ago)

I have the same problem. Im not have idea to solve.
Sorry by my poor english.
I have same issue in swgoh and marvel strike force so far. Have emailed samsung see if i get a reply.
It seems that the cause of the problems are the MALI drivers. Samsung does not care about this problem because games work find on the S8/S9

At the moment if you don't want to suffer this annoying issue => do not update your Galaxy S7/S7 Edge to Oreo (Android 8.0) using the UK rom (G930F/G935F only). US variants are not affected by the problem.
Here are two uploaded videos showing the issue (links below).
Video 1: https://youtu.be/-RG1zfc9cf4
Video 2: https://youtu.be/5FINR6BZ41M
Also I've noticed that AR Core crashes constantly (tested with games that support AR Core like Tower AR). It seems that this OREO build although "final" still has some issues which Samsung will not fix.
The following has been tested:
Changing the display resolution through settings.
Changing the game resolution (using Game Tuner)
Disabling GameLauncher/Game Tools/Game Tuner (all the possible combinations).
Rebooting the phone
Reinstalling the game
Changed the GPU renderer in Developer Settings.
Changing performance modes.
Today, the new Oreo update seems to fix this issue.
Firmware version G930FXXU2ERE8 and G935FXXU2ERE8 for the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge respectively addresses the graphic tearing in games.

SIM Toolkit app showing up unwanted on MIUI 9 (v9.5.2.0)

After unlocking the bootloader and installing MIUI 9 STABLE on my Mi Note 2 from xiaomi.eu , after a few weeks an icon to access the SIM Toolkit has shown in my app drawer, I have no need for it so I'm wondering if there is any way of getting rid of the icon / shortcut to it, I know it can't be completely removed as it's necessary for the phone to function properly, any help is appreciated, thanks!

Same here. I'm very pleased with my new Mi Note 2 global ROM (6G RAM, 128G storage) and the MIUI 9.5 in general. Just a couple tiny little minor things annoy a little bit like this one, the SIM Toolkit icon jumps to its 'regular' place on the home screen(s) with every reboot. Also, Still didn't find a complete satisfying MIUI dark theme, the official one isn't complete IMO as well.

Sorry for the late reply, this part of the forum was giving me error 404 for a while, glad to know it's not just me with this issue, weirdly enough I have 3 more of these phones, belonging to family members and the exact same ROM yet the SIM Toolkit didn't show up for them after rebooting, as for the theme I use Paper World, it's a Dynamic / Animated theme I guess? There's a few things that text is black in grey boxes but it isn't much of a deal, unfortunately the official Black theme from Xiaomi is somewhat broken, sometimes if very lucky after restarting it gets applied correctly, aside these I've yet to find any other good ones, if you can't download themes, etc, it may be due to having the MI App installed and doing updates to the apps, cleaning the Themes app cache returns it to factory and the Themes, wallpapers become available again, Xiaomi updated most apps so they don't work out of China due to privacy policy issues, as for the SIM Toolkit showing up in the apps we may have to wait for the MIUI 10 which is Beta stage, I will give it a shot when it's Stable!

Strange theme bug in Samsung Message

Hello
Since I bought the Note 9 I have a theme bug in the message app, the themes that try to change the messages bubbles don't do it anymore.
And the result is quite dirty: I get messages written white on white !
Do someone have the same issue or am I alone ?
This is what it should look like:

You can't use night mode with themes on. They cancel out each other now.
What android version are you on? If you're on Pie but you're installing a theme and the homescreen screenshot in the store shows the clock widget at the Top of the screen, then that theme isn't updated for Pie as yet and will cause issues with theming.
I am still on Oreo 8.1 and frankly I don't think I will upgrade to Pie, I saw it and OneUi on my wife's S9, it is very elegant and round but all is black or white, no more colors
In fact I had the Note 8 before and it worked properly, when the Note 9 went out, I thought it would be better, with more battery, enhanced audio and so on, but basics like the themes do not work, and I am starting to regret the change.
Besides all the apps have been upgraded to their current version under Oreo

It depends on theme you use. I have themes on Pie with colours everywhere.
I tried Pie and went back to Oreo. Many dark themes, even those updated for Pie had elements that didn't work properly (white text on white backgrounds, misaligned bubble menus). Perhaps they'll improve over time.
For now, Oreo works great and many of the Pie enhancements are available through Good Lock.
And ironically, this upgrade has shown up on my phone yesterday.
Trouble is I really want to stay on Oreo
But now there is a notification about the upgrade that is bugging me and I can't get rid of it. I seached google for a solution but apparently without rooting the phone no one found a way to stop it.
It can be stopped by using an ADB command to uninstall the Software Update app.
