I would trade my Pixel XL in heartbeat for a phone that came out years ago. - Google Pixel XL Guides, News, & Discussion

My one regret, well two actually, as an Android fanatic, was selling my Nexus 5. Not only did it unlock and root in what seemed like 10 seconds, but the size being small enough for your pocket and a screen that somehow looked massive. I had the logic an even better device would soon be on the horizon. Those being the 5x and 6p, both being a letdown, but the worst Nexus device is still better than anything Samsung releases.
Even though I'm one of the unfortunate Verizon pixel users, this is the second best phone I have owned, and that is from a long list of phones. I'm fine with not having root, but I do miss ROM customization.
Pre emptive apologize just in case I posted this in the wrong place or annoyed anyone with my nostalgic rambling, but I needed this off my chest.
Any former Nexus 5 users care to weigh in?

I really liked the Nexus 5 but it wasn't perfect. I had GPS trouble and frame cracking issues. One even broke somehow and wouldn't see a SIM anymore. As I get older I really like bigger screens for use without glasses now.
Size and feel in hand was perfect, I love that soft touch plastic like it had, like a lot of blackberrys had. Only other that came close in that department for me was the 3GS.
Was and still is amazing community developer support, which is impressive. Doesn't seem like the pixels are enjoying that.

Nexus 5 was an incredible device

**you mean the nexus 6?
Just kidding, but to me, that was the epitome of a premium smartphone. I would trade my phone in a second for a flawless N6

But what about the phone of which we don't speak of?
....Samsung Galaxy Nexus. I loved it when it dropped, but it did not age well at all.

I'm one of the few that was let down by the N5 (and I've posted this before). Yes, it could be unlocked and rooted in minutes (although I'm not sure the Pixel really takes a significantly greater enough time to make an issue out of it), but the phone felt flimsy and poorly made. The design was unspectacular, the IPS screen uninspiring, and the performance underwhelming (let's just not mention the camera.)
At the same time as the N5's release was the best Nexus phone released by Google that wasn't a Nexus... The original Moto X. What's most interesting about that phone is the extent to which its feature set went on to influence and set the agenda for future Nexus and Pixel hardware (dedicated language processing chips) and software in general, and Google Assistant in particular; in contrast, the N5 did nothing of the sort. Had El goog folded the Moto X directly into the Nexus/Pixel programme (the N6 being an entirely wasted opportunity) I'm quite sure the N5 would have only one talking point left for it: the last standard Nexus demonstrating all that was wrong with the programme.

GPS wasn't the best for sure. I did Lyft at the time and got lost constantly. The community for it was insanely good, you are dead right.

I'd trade a flawless N6 for your Pixel XL. That was my previous phone. Got it late in the game and always kept in unicorn beattle case. The phone is def in basically new shape and no damage even in the slightest. PM me if you're serious.

If you think the 6 was fragile you should see the 6P. I always made fun of my brothers phone as he had the 6P and it was an extremely brittle phone.
My 6 is a tank and still is.

Actually it was the 6p. I was walking when I typed that

nexus 5? lol
nexus 5 had so bad camera and battery life . I replaced it second day for galaxy s5
Google improved camera from 5X/6P but battery was still **** which got fix when they released Pixel XL

I just found a guy selling 6 for 100 off letgo. Yay!!!!

That's crazy man, mine was flawless

I can't complain about the PXL since Google replaced my 6P for free, but I would love to have some Oreo ROM love in it, I'm still hopeful they'll surface soon and have my finger on Paypal for that.

Don't be mistaken, the N6P was a beast of a phone. Dual front facing speakers, an almost perfect camera, and enough storage/memory to keep every finger swipe accurate. What was there not to love?
Oh yeah, the unlimited free WiFi hotspot I miss from my .... Samsung Galaxy Nexus (R.I.P). Hmm, now that I think of it, did I lose that because I left Verizon's unlimited data plan and switched to Metropcs's or because I upgraded past Nougat?
Now with the Pixel XL, I've actually only run into one. single. problem. It never ran Marshmallow. And if you care to know why, it's simply because the best mods for the Android version of GTA San Andreas are ONLY stable on Marshmallow.
Truth be told, the Pixel XL is ALOT better than I'd thought it would be and because of that... It's boring to me because I am a flashaholic with nothing to flash.

I loved my Nexus 5 but it had it issues. I wouldn't ever go back to that small of a phone lol I got 2 Nexus 5s that had Motherboard issues and would stop displaying anything on the screen, even after replacing parts including the screen. I love my Nexus 6 and would go back to that if my pixel XL died. The pixel XL is the first time I am content with having a locked down device.

Are you returning or keeping the Moto X Pure Edition? And why?

It is probably too early for this kind of thread but I'm just gonna put this out there. So...
Are you keeping the phone or are you returning it? Why?
Also, note that the return/redesign period for the Moto Maker Moto X Pure Edition is extended for 30 days from shipped date. (Originally, it was only 14 days , and 30 days were only for CA residents.)
See here: https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/prod_answer_detail/a_id/97867
Update 9/19: Moto changed it again. Extended return no longer applies. Be aware of your 14 days for everywhere except California.
I plane to exchange to for a dark wood back. I like it so far faster and battery life is about the same as my Note 2.
At this point I plan on keeping it. Pretty sure it's going to be like a Nexus phone with a memory card slot. I just came from the Verizon G4, and while I really liked it, there is absolutely NO development.
Definitely a keeper. Has everything I need: close to vanilla Android, free from carrier bloat, native wifi-tether, etc. Don't think there's any competition at this price point.
Only weakness is the battery life, but it's still slightly better than the HTC m7 I'm coming from. Just wish Google would get their head out of their asses and fix the damn Google Play battery drain..
So far I love it, I wouldn't mind a wood back but I'd be concerned it would make it more slippery
Keeping it. Loving the phone so far.
Keeping. The only 'negative', if you can call it that, is that the battery is 'only' 4 hours SoT. But the turbo charger is insane (over 2% per minute), I'm not even worried about battery life.
I'm returning mine. It was between the XPE and a Note 5 for me. The Note 5 wins by a mile. (for my needs). However I will buy another XPE in the future to have as my side b*tch. I'll wait for a black Friday sale and get a wood back next time. I had gone with the plastic back with the intention of using skins. Not with that texture.
Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk
Little torn right now. I like the size and build more than my Nexus 6, but doesn't seem like much of an upgrade, more of a side grade. The deal breaker for the xpe may be lack of wifi calling on t-mobile, something I use in the basement of my house.
Out of curiosity how is screen brightness. I need a super bright screen because I'm outside a lot. I love the brightness of the note 5 and the nexus 6 once rooted has a super bright mode.
So far, I really really dig this thing. I can't come up with a single complaint other than the lack of fingerprint reader.
My index finger just graviates to that Moto dimple, and to be completely honest, it's making me reconsider if I want to switch it out for a N5 2015. With Android Pay around the corner, and it's integration into Marshmallow with the API, I see fingerprint reader's really becoming a core aspect of the phone. Maybe I'm wrong, who knows. But that dimple just makes me wish it were a fingerprint reader.
In all reality, I'll probably keep it due to SD slot, larger screen, etc. But god dammit.

I have heard that the AMOLED screens on the N6 and Note 5 will be brighter, but I've also heard no complaints on just how bright the XPE is. I'm sure it would suit you needs. I'm also outside a lot for work, so I'm interested in this question as well.

Just curious, what does the Note 5 have that the Moto doesn't? Which part(s) is dissuading you the most from keeping the X? I'm guess the stylus and split-screen?

You can do the same thing with a PIN, though, right? With Android Pay, I don't think you need a fingerprint scanner. You actually have a backup PIN in case the fingerprint reader fails for some reason.

Yeah I guess you're right. Besides, I'd lose out on all the Moto features, and that's even before considering how hard it is to snag a Nexus in the first month of launch.

im coming from a LG G Flex, have had it for a year and was feeling the itch to get a new phone. Got my Pure(White/Bamboo) on Thursday and i can notice the screen quality is a lot better, build quality feels premium, no lag. The battery life isnt a step up, the Flex has a 3500mah battery. The Turbo charging is amazing though, it charges up so fast. The back does get warm when browsing through apps for a while and the whites on the screen seem to be warmer compared to S6. I miss the double tap to wake and the even bigger screen on my Flex but no way im going back. Definitely a keeper, i feel like its the best phone for the money out right now and i will definately recommend it.
Definitely keeping everything is great. Speakers, screen, size, feel, look and the list goes on... Night and day over my nexus. Let's just hope the development community takes off

gonna be exchanging it. the royal blue in the motomaker doesn't look anything like i've seen in reviews if it had i would have gotten it to start with
Coming from a Nexus 6. Exchanging mine due to a couple of what seems like defective issue: gets warm, banding and flickering on screen, chrome web browsing stutters (not sure if relation to heat issues). It is somewhat upsetting to receive a broken phone but hopefully the replacement works 100%.

Got my pixel XL early and all I can say is........

Wow. Coming from a LG V10, which I loved, I feel like this is def a decent step forward. I have yet to see how batter power is but for now I'm impressed with the software and how fast and smooth the phone is. I haven't started gaming on it yet. Mainly setting up apps for work. I got mine this morning at 10.
I'm coming from Nexus 6P and i'm equally impressed!! Enjoying it so far!!!
I haven't gotten mine yet, but I'm coming from the Note 7. I hope I am equally impressed
Coming from N7 and I am sooooo happy right now. Super super fast and smooth absolutely no lag like N7 had. All I can say is WOW (copied OP, but so true)

Haven't really put much thought to it but it does have a crack in top left of screen. Still works fine just hairline crack. Huawei wanted 163 to repair. Decided to get pixel xl and couldn't he happier. Best Android phone I have owned and I have had all the top tier devices.

I share everyone's sentiments here. I received my XL today.
A few things...
1) Coming from a 6P that I love, I am in love with the size of the XL. It doesn't feel like a big phone. It's not unwieldy and it feels more pocketable. I know the size difference isn't huge on paper, but it's more tightly engineered. It doesn't feel top heavy. It's just more comfortable to hold. It doesn't feel a lot bigger than an iPhone 7.
2) I'm not in love with the black, though. It's more of a grey. It's not ugly, I just wish it was darker.
3) I know it's early, but damn it's smooth. No hiccups or stutters on my end.
4) I was using the Pixel launcher on the 6P. I love it.
5) Like the 6P, I enjoy the fingerprint reader on the back. It just makes sense. It even feels better here.
6) The hardware is flawless. Samsung and Apple flawless.
7) This started with Nougat, but I enjoy how the contact pictures show up on my 2016 Impala infotainment center. Other manufacturers have had this, so it's a nice addition.
8) It smelled good when I opened the box.
9) The lack of waterproofing is a bummer, but whatever. I've never dropped a phone in water. (I do have my iPhone 7 in my shower. I use it only as an iPod)
10) I really like it. Google did a hell of a job.
11) I know it won't be mentioned much, but Google nailed the launch. 2 weeks between preorder and delivery! Last year we waited nearly a month. I think the same thing happened with the Nexus 6. Everyone lauds how Apple does it, Google just did it too.

I intitially balked about the screen shrinking, then I remembered how I was initially against getting the 6P due to it's large screen size lol.
Just so I don't sound like a 'fanboy'...
One thing I find a little annoying on the pixel is that the auto brightness adjuster makes the screen too bright for my tastes.
I have the brightness slider almost all of the to the left.
Not a big deal, but I'm not sure why the default brightness is so high.

Was very exited to get my Pixel phone earlier than stated. Speaker phone sounds loud and clear and audio sound in general was great.

Love 99.9% of the Pixel :)

Man this phone is sweet. Display, sound build quality camera software all awesome. But the one thing I do not like at all is the chins on the is phone. Man they are huge. If I compare it to the Nexus 5 or 5X or the 6P these chins are like twice as big. I wonder what the heck Google was thinking when they did that. No screen protector on mine or case, the phone is a tad slippery as well. But I got that $4.99 a month insurance from Google so that should cover me...

Loving it here too, a bit wary of the battery life so far but it is far too early to draw any conclusions as Android does take a while to settle.
Really impressed with how responsive the phone is - passed it around my colleagues at work and they all commented on it.
It is also really nice to be able to sit down with a phone in my pocket without it jabbing me and being uncomfortable like the 6P was.
Agreed. Initially when the pics started leaking and everyone was freaking out about the chins I was thinking "they're not that bad"... Once in hand I was like "yeah, they're bad".
Phone is much taller than it should have been imho.
Loving everything else about it so far though.
Can't wait to get root.

Comparing to my N5X the fingerprint sensor is higher up, almost to the equivalent increase in chin size. Really feels off when using the fingerprint sensor for me.

How did you get that? When I purchased the phone, the insurance was a flat rate of $99. I went back and checked and I still don't see a $4.99/month plan. Am I looking in the wrong area?
EDIT: nevermind...I see. You're a Project Fi customer. Y'all get the month-month payments...lucky
I've had the Pixel since Friday but only really spent time with it this afternoon/evening. I also purchased the Axon7 so I ha e been testing that one out up till today. I have to say I do like the Pixel very much. I have no case of screen protector so I was hesitant to use but since I'm 90% sure I'm sending it back I took it to work. Form factor is very nice although I must admit that going from N5x to A7 to Pix I do notice the smaller screen. It's very clean though. Way better than my N5x and not to sure about A7 because I still have factory screen protector on. I can say though it feels very delicate in the hands, like I need to be careful(slippery to). I will straight up admit that if the Pixel was $500 I wouldn't even think twice, it would stay. Just don't think I can justify$730 for a phone. Not with how nice midrange phones are and the price they fetch. Plus I have 7.1.1 on my N5x along with Google Assistant. Who knows though, I still have 8 days left to decide.

$5*24 months = $120, you paid less for insurance though...
Really, the chin is no where near as bad as I thought it would be or how people say it would be.
The design is very consistent, symmetrical and balanced. The front looks like a better version of the iPhone, with the omission of the ugly home button. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for the back, even though it has grown in me. If anything, the back is my gripe much more than the chin. Never noticed the bezels.
Sent from my Pixel using XDA-Developers mobile app
Just got mine yesterday, so not much time on it.
I actually think it has really good grip naked compared to other phones, but i always use a slim case.
My only gripes are bezels and some os/launcher options or lack of options. Otherwise it's a near perfect phone for my needs. Google will fix/add some of my concerns in upcoming updates
Yes price is high but it was built to compete with apple/Samsung, so its priced right. Although appl/Samsung are overpriced...hahaha
I put mine on the t-mobile promo, so i will get some credit back. Won't get the full $325 cause i change phones 1-2 times a yr. This one will probably make a full yr.
Hmm I think the chins are about the same as 5X. The 5X did have that front facing speaker on the front. If Pixel had that I think it would save it from being complained about.
yeah... to me the weirdest thing about the bottom chin is that it's just blank. Nothing there except chin -- no button, no speaker, just unused space. Every time I pick up a pixel I just wish they could have made it about 5mm shorter
I'm ok with the chin. Actually the Caseology parallax case changed the way I hold my phone so much I barely even notice (always had a pinky rest on the gigantic chin). The back of this case is amazing for grip.
The only sad thing for me and for lots of others it seems? The downward firing speaker. It sounds clear. It's soo easy to cover. Coming from a 6p and a 5x even, it's just a massive bummer. Even the 5x was aok.

Are you guys using the regular display mode or the srgb one?
In my opinion the colors in the regular mode are too punchy and the srgb is quite nice, just the whites turn quite yellowish unfortunately.
I am completely loving this phone right now. I was a bit weary of it being an HTC phone since my only experience with HTC was the HTC One and it was a TERRIBLE phone all around. The One was probably the worst phone I've ever had, so it left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth.
Other than that, the (IMO) minimalist feel and the fact that the phone just works is making me very happy. So far that's without root or anything. If there were a way to get unlocked hotspot without root that would be icing on the cake. I probably wouldn't even root or mod anything else if I had hotspot working

Would you buy the Nexus 6P again?

So the other day I dropped my 6P right on the power button (while it was in my Speck case) and it caused it to get jammed in and unusable. Thankfully, Huawei said repair is covered by warranty, which I have a few months left of. This got me thinking, though, that if something were to happen again, would I buy this phone again?
The answer for me is absolutely. I bought my Graphite 64GB for $799 CAD, and in my Googling, I found the 128GB variant for $775 CAD on B&H. To me this is an absolute steal, and with the Pixel phones introducing iPhone-level prices, I wouldn't think again about owning another one of these. What do you guys think, would you hang on to the Nexus line as long as you can, or get something new?
I wouldn't. Using a Spigen case and keeping it in my front pocket, it has bent. Not enough to crack the screen (yet) but enough that I can see it. Especially by the power button and volume rocker. And the games I've been playing lately are PinOut and Auralux 2. Neither seem to be all that graphically intensive, but both are apparently intense enough to tax the SD810 processor and cause it to throttle from over heating. Much happier with my Pixel.
So what's the price of the Pixel XL if you wanted one of those?

I would buy a 6P with a better SoC and same design and price. I find Pixel's design ugly and boring as hell. It is also too expensive and with that price I would rather buy an iPhone. I like 6P's design and love the stereo speakers.
I just love the way the phone looks. Nice big display, front facing speakers and great low light pics. An updated processor and ois for video is all that is really needed. Wish Huawei would do a 3T with this one. With a black rhinoshield bumper, my black 6p looks sleek and stealth like...corny as that might sound.
May be future Pixel XL 2017 model.
I've only had mine for 4 days and finally had time to root tonite. I don't hate it yet.
I thought about the Pixel XL but couldn't get around the looks or the price point.
This has been my first phone ive owned for over a year and havent even thought of upgrading yet. The pixel looks like dog sh1t and the price tag is out of control. The battery dieing at random % bug is pissing me off lately, but besides that i truly love this device.
Coming from the LG G4 and Nexus 5 . I really liked and wanted a Pixel but the Price point kept me away. Found a 128gb 6p on B&H and decided to try. So Far so good. I would love to have some of the Pixel rom's features but really do not need assistant. Overall its a nice device and I would purchase again.
Yes I would and technically I did haha. I bought one in April of this year and had it up to August when the Note 7 came out. Sold it and got the N7 and had that for a month and we all know what happened there heh. Returned the Note and ended up buying another 6P. I was originally just getting it to hold me down until the Pixel XL, but once I saw what it had and it's price point, I was like "Nah".
The 6P imo is one of the best phones ever made. It was a good price, AOSP, plenty of mod support, great performance and my god the speakers?? I don't think I could get another device without front facing speakers.
Currently running it stock, unrooted on 7.1.1 and it's running problem free. Love it.

Install the Cortex ROM for the 6P. It brings the entire pixel phone experience and is probably the most stable and smoothest rom out there.
Maybe next year's 2017 Nexus comeback after Google retires the Pixel!
I'd buy an updated 6P is a heartbeat. A better CPU and OIS and it'd be perfection.

We know this may or will not happen. Huawei and Google have moved on. As long as Google is tied to a carrier the Pixel Phone will be priced very high.
Since the 6P was notorious for throttling with VR, when I came across a good deal on a 2 day old XL on Swappa I pounced on it.

what potential device intrigues 6p Owners ?

I had the note 2,3,5 but eventually switched to nexus 6 and 6p and have loved it, although disappointed with no OIS and the battery issues, my 4th RMA to be delivered today.
I personally am torn by the note 8 and pixel 2, once it's not so hideous, has less bezel. But the reasonable price on v20 and g6 seemed enticing for a second as does the screen on the s8.

Noting looks interesting for me right now.
I'm waiting for new devices this fall.
If it doesn't have a Snapdragon 835 or better, I'm not interested.
Maybe a Pixel 2. Nothing with a curved screen. I hate them.

Personal preference.
1. They look plain silly to me.
2. Distortion in the curved part of the screen.
3. Finger falls of on the curved portion, so it becomes an unusable area.
4. Cases now look strange.
..
..
I prefer a perfectly flat screen with minimal bezels.
I'll be hanging on to my Nexus 6P for a while if the Pixel2 has a curved screen.

4th RMA? Aren't you entitled to a new device or a refund at that point??? I would've raised hell after the 3rd.

Since i'm on google fi, i have the nexus 6p at the moment. I'll pass on the Pixel line and wait another year to see what google will come out with
I've switched to the S8. I looked at the plus but it's actually a large phone and the s8 has the same size screen as the 6P, but not as wide. Really, it's been a good phone. The bluetooth/wifi isn't as strong as the 6P, but I like that it's water resistant and easier to handle. Also, the always on screen is great, battery life has been better than the 6P and yeah. It's been a good device for the 4 days I've had it lol. now to sell my 6p on swappa
Ordered the Galaxy S8 Plus International G955F Exynos model which has unlockable Bootloader!

The first one was because of the massive battery drain but it came slightly after my manufacturer warranty and they took care of me. After a few weeks I finally had somebody who let me know they couldn't really hear me very well, so I turn my speaker phone on and realized it was something in my microphone or whatever. So I had that replaced and the one they sent me after that had the same battery drain immediately, so now I'm on my fourth total, I've been on it for about 12 hours and I just hit 13% and it has not shut down so it looks like I might be okay for a while. I agree they need to do something. I'm not sure what's going to happen with this whole class action lawsuit situation but Google has taken care of me. No complaints. Definitely consider the pixel 2 if it has thin bezels and larger screen

Have considered the same but if I'm going Sammy, I'm going back to the note line. I LOVE this phone and the shamu though. I'd still be on it if the camera was better.

I wouldn't exactly call it junk. Knox is actually very good if you value security. It definitely increases the security of the phones.
It may hurt modding a phone but security should be every OEM's main focus, especially when their devices contain all your private information.

Should be an option and it should not brick the phone.

Perhaps if there's a way to hack the phone, then it is fully possible to install spyware, loggers, etc on the stock software, then sell it to someone and just steal everything. I do recall a ROM that actually did that and was instantly removed from the forums.
I mean it's nice to install custom ROMs on a phone, but you would really have to look at the whole picture and not from just what we want.

Note 8 or 2017 nexus for me. Haven't had a note device in 4 years (tablet). But I'm not particularly thrilled with a touchwiz device or non nexus because of the lag, the inevitable lag. I got a g4 2 yrs ago and got bored with no real ROMs or low ability to mod it
Basically, any new phone with dual front facing speakers I will probably buy. I would like to have a newer processor though for connectivity reasons.

I'm really curious what the note 8 will bring to the table, I had the note 1 (laggy mess but original concept), note 2 and note 3. The 2 and 3 were some of the best phones I've had tbh.
