Has ANYONE got network shares to work??? - Shield Android TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have tried just about EVERYTHING that I can think of to get the Nvidia Shield 16GB console to connect to a Linux server on my network, to no avail!! (This is an OpenMediaVault server that has all of my media files on it) I wanted to link the media shares on my home server to the Shield so that Plex could reference them; but no matter what I try it always tells me the user id/password is not correct! Even when I set up guest access and select the connect as guest option in Shield it still wouldn't connect... yet if I put ES Explorer on the Shield box and try to connect it to my server as guest there it works fine and I can see the folders in ES Explorer!
To double check, I shared some folders on my plain Windows 10 box and Shield couldn't connect to those either! Is there some 'secret' option or setting I am missing? I really would like to use Plex Server on the Shield but have all my media on my OpenMediaVault server... At least until Nvidia or Plex allows the movement of all it's internal libraries to adaptable storage.
I am beginning to think that connecting to any network shared folder is 'broken' in the Shield... Anyone else having these issues? Or knows what one has to do to 'set up' shared folders so that they can be connected to the SHield?
Frustrated....
Thanks in advance.

SMB does not work for me on Synology NAS
I have my Synology NAS in a domain. I've tried everything I can think of to get smb to work with no luck. It works fine from a Windows and MAC computer. Should I switch to using NFS? I had everything working properly before I put the Synology NAS in a domain and upgraded the NVIDIA Shield. I've tried local accounts, domain accounts...nothing works. Any suggestions? I have this wide open so it can use SMB1,2 or 3. I have encryption as optional. I'm going to try and see if I can debug this with the Synology logs. I'm close to just moving PLEX to a Windows computer and giving up.

User error...sorry everyone...i had vpn, pia turned on...

Hi, the recent firmware versions seem to have some serious bugs. I posted here about a problem formatting a flash card for adoptable storage(16GB model). The Nvidia forums were gracious enough to reply to me. If you scroll around there, it seems a lot of problems including this one that you post about started with more recent firmware. As they said to me over there, it's time to start flooding the help desk with these issues so that they feel more compelled to release a fix. I use an NAS myself and have been getting by with ES File Explorer Pro, which I already have owned for a few years. But you are not alone. I will say that I still love my Shield TV though. I was one who got sick of the PC upgrade race for gaming and has relegated herself to consoles and GeForce now is like magic to me. Most beautiful graphics I have ever seen on a little console, not to mention any noticeable latency at all. I mean the graphics are rendered off-premises, but the way they take advantage of the real-time decoding of the Tegra chip is just phenomenal, to the point that a bystander that you hand a controller to would never know you were streaming.

Hi,
I have a synology nas (DS414), and I fought with it for quite a while to make it work.
trick is the shield seems to accept only one sublevel directory, so:
\\NAS\Video will work
\\NAS\Video\Movies will fail...
Hope it helps!

That is crappy but explains what I had happen. When I logged in, I could see my user folder and other readable folders. When I logged in anonymously, I was able to see just the public folder that is read-only for people who connect to my network. However, I could not browse any of them. Mine goes \\NAS\User\UserRootDirectory\yadayada

Hmm... interesting... I wonder if I set up some Symlinks on my Linux box and limited them to only one sublevel, if that would work? I'll give it a go and let you know! Thanks!!

suggestion for those of you using linux box as media server to tv

so, just networked my office pc and my living room media pc, just using ssh tunneling. all media stored on office pc, accessed via living room pc to go to tv.
both systems on ubuntu. office on 9.10, living room on 10.04
i highly recommend using remote droid (an app) for anyone else doing the same. lets me control the mouse on either computer from my couch, and the onscreen keyboard works just fine. from my couch, i drag and drop whatever files i want from one computer to the other, load any media i want, etc.
it's brilliant. i couldn't be happier
all you need if you have the setup is the remote droid jar file running. you can get it on the remote droid website. all totally free.
i heart open source

it isn't like phonemypc. phonemypc is an emulator like a remote desktop kind of deal, like logmein. this is just a remote mousepad/keyboard. you still have to look at the screen to see what you're doing. very handy though if you're on the couch. and, you don't have to do it in what i refer to as 'squintovision'.

you can do that with phonemypc too, and gmote. I just like phonemypc because you don't have to set up ports or anything, it just works.

ah. you don't need to set ports for droid remote either. just tell it the local i.p. address of the computer you want to control. very handy for me, since i use it on more than one computer. and gmote is nice, if all you want to do is goof with your libraries. i can do whatever with remote droid. move files, start up hulu, navigate the web, etc. anything you could do sitting at the computer, you can do with remote droid (as long as you can still see the screen, lol)
I can't figure out how to set this up in Ubuntu.

i always used phonemypc because on my last android phone i didn't have wifi, phone my pc uses their server as an intermediary so you just log in and you can see all your computers listed on the account, no IP's to keep track of or anything.

go to the remote droid website to get the jar file. you'll need the java runtime already installed on your computer (can get through software repository). once you have the jar file, just right click > open with > java runtime. then start up the remote droid app on your phone.
the default address was wrong for mine (127.0.1.1). you can find out your device address by going into your router (usually address 192.168.0.1, unless you've changed it) using a browser. your pc will be listed somewhere. google how to find it specifically within your router. then, plug that address into the remote droid configuration. should work like a charm
Is there a way in Ubuntu to setup a fixed IP address?

[INFO] How to Allow Multiple Remote Desktop Sessions

Hi,
I want my transformer to do everything my old netbook did and prove that is indeed possible. As you all probably know this does take some workarounds.
My mother always told me, if you're I doubt then someone else probably also is.
There for Ill post this up and my reason why.
One thing I cannot get working on Android is java sites like my online banking system. I'm sure with time it'll be possible but for now its not, so I thought of a work around which works for me with my setup.
I have a HTPC in my living room running Windows 7, it runs our TV, movies, recordings and such. I set up a user on this server which I use for when I vnc into to run stuff I can't on the Transformer, however it was annoying that the media center would have to shut down in order for me to do my vnc stuff, so I started looking around the net for a solution.
Hence this post. There is a way to get multiple users onto windows 7 simultaneously
http://www.ehow.com/how_6820442_allow-multiple-remote-desktop-sessions.html
The above article explains exactly what you need to do, easy easy...
Now I can view TV while getting banking done through a rdp connection.

Mounting Samba/CIFS shares on Shield TV

Hi guys,
I am facing a lot of difficulty in trying to mount a samba share on the shield TV (16gb model).
It's freshly rooted with busybox, supersu, se linux mode and patched cifs manager.
No matter how I try to mount it, via terminal or via the patched CIFSManager, I always get an error saying "cannot access a needed shared library".
su --mount-master -c busybox mount -o username=shaf,password=android,rw,noperm,iocharset=utf8 -t cifs //192.168.1.1/android /data/media/0/android
The network folder is perfectly accessible through ES File explorer & I've even tried formatting the network drive as ext4.
I have checked in proc/ and the cifs files are there but I'm not sure if I need to load a cifs.ko kernel module, I assumed it was loaded.
I would be very grateful if someone could help me out here and point me in the right direction.

hey guys. im not much on networking. trying to figure it all out myself, but i found this app awhile back called servers ultimate pro.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.icecoldapps.serversultimatepro
they do have a 7 day trial to test things out but through this app i was able to create a smb/cifs server with windows 10 being able to map it as a network drive. At least on windows 10, i had to google and eventually found a few registry tweaks to make windows actually see it.
Currently my issue now is speed transfer isnt all that fast. its usable for my needs, but i average about 5-10MBps during transfer with an external usb 3.0 HDD plugged into the shield tv, transferring files over the network between my windows 10 machine. That is an issue im currently working on fixing, but i was at least able to create a working server with this app. The authors have a forum on xda as well but its looking more and more that it might become abandoned (servers ultimate pro) as the author(s) havent been responding to forum questions or even emails.
either way, just thought id let you guys know.

Ive actually tried that one amongst others, was one of the best tested at the time, even had, if i recall correctly, tasker support which is a must, but my shield for all intense and purposes, will be free of the google eco system, hence why i wont/cant have apps that require license check.......i dont like the artificial dependancy on other apps/services such as google services
On the lookout, hopefully, for an open source alternative with good tasker support.

Hey thanks buddy,
I think I had a look at that before but ignored it temporarily as I wanted to fix mounting samba shares first thereafter focus on making a script so it mounts automatically on boot but I don't see a problem with skipping straight to using the script.
Unfortunately, I won't be able to check/test the firetv script until next weekend, what problem do you have when trying to use the script?
I'm tempted to install the full android version with a tv style home launcher and check if I can connect to samba shares as this is driving me nuts lol.
Check out the thread 'nVidia Shield Android TV - Post your home screen' and see andrewthecoder's post, need to ask him if he's able to mount remote samba shares.
BTW guys, I think there's some confusion, my intention is to use the shield tv as a client, not to host a samba server lol.

Yeah sorry, i did actually realise you were talking client side, i went slightly offtopic with server side talk
Honestly, i didnt really put much effort into it, just quickly tried to see if it worked first, second, third try before giving up, waiting on more info on the xda thread, or maybe even an app to do this more simply, or an alternative working method.........im playing the, keep my ears to the ground, waiting game
Plus, ive not found any confirmation on which android samba servers are confirmed working for this kind of mount, so i have the worry, that the script may work, but fail on a non standard samba server.........again, waiting on confirmation on what works and hopefully a guide.........looking it up every now and again

Haha no worries man, yes I'll try messing with that coming this Friday evening, did you use script manager, SManager?
Ah damn I did not even know there's different types of samba servers! ?
Lool I'm the complete opposite, too impatient to wait, that's why I'm really considering installing the full android version. It would be such a delight to have the dreamcast and gamecube roms running of the NAS drive as well as 4K files in the future.

For mine I found that the utf8 bit was throwing it off. I removed that and added sec=ntlm and that worked for me. The only downside is apps can read from it but can't seem to write to it. Give it a go and see if that helps though.

Ahhhhh, now were getting somewhere
Thanks for that luvley bit of insight, and the thread maker for starting the subject in the first place........hopefully, a write solution will show up and find its way to this "network storage mounting" thread..........
Theres another potential, i stress, potential avenue to mount local filesystems beyond jellybean...sshfs
Easysshfs
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ru.nsu.bobrofon.easysshfs&hl=en
https://bitbucket.org/bobrofon/easysshfs
Ive attempted to test this, sshelper server on the shield, easysshfs on the tablet with no success.......im thinking theres kernel modules involved( fuse.ko) , mind you im no expert. (Easysshfs logs makes mention of "fuse.sshfs is not in proc/mounts")
If modules are indeed involved then this is not an ideal solution (unless kernel moduling becomes universally compatible somehow), as i'd prefer any future purchases of stock android to have the ability natively, minimum, instead of waiting and hoping someone can release a solution
Sshelper
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.arachnoid.sshelper&hl=en
http://arachnoid.com/android/SSHelper/
Edit
Well holy moly, i got it working, i just randomly decided to put admin as username instead of leaving it blank and hey presto....mounted.........quickly tested a file manager without network support, opensource "amaze", to browse and play a video on my tab from a usb stick on my shield........excellent
So for those interested, a simple two app install plus configuring (username, pass, mount to, mount from) and you have network mounting.....on lollipop.........excellent

Yes I am sharing a "server of sorts" (Desktop in den with video and audio files stored) with multiple setups .
Shield with Kodi
Laptop with Kodi
Laptop with VLC
Samsung Tablets with Kodi or VLC
Sharing permissions need to be set to allow "Everyone" read/write access on server
I use a "MOVIE" folder, a "TV SHOW" folder, and a "MUSIC" folder then add source under files in KODI,select scraper for tv,movie,or music and it will also add covers and details to list. Kodi will detect files and add a MOVIE ,TV SHOWS, and MUSIC tab on home screen after scanning. I also set "scan on startup" " in systems settings so I only need to reboot to update libraries.
https://kodi.tv/ use wiki if you get lost
Hope this helps

It appears you are sharing your media from a server to the Shield. I am trying to use my Shield with Kodi as the server. I have an external drive attached by USB to the Shield and need to connect two other computers to it. I did this previously with OpenELEC and Xbian, but I can't get them to recognize the Shield/Kodi on the network like I'm used to. Any assistance would be great. Thanks!
I should probably mention that I am not rooted and would like to not root my Shield so I can get further updates rolled out by NVidia. That's kind of the problem.
I'm trying to run a Samba server on the NVidia Shield without root that has read/write access to external storage (external hard drive).
So far, I've been able to get FTP servers running on it, but nothing allows access to my external storage. I'd much prefer SMB to FTP though.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
AFAIK it is not possible to run a Samba server on Android without root since SMB uses port numbers < 1024.
Rather than attach my external drive directly to the NVidia Shield, I attached it to the router and have all my computers (Linux and Windows boxes) and the Shield connect to the shared drive and all folders. That works great!

[Q] desktop remote server for Android

Any recommending kind of remote GUI desktop server for Android instead not using CLI (Command Line Interface) using adb shell.
Anyone using the openvpn on Nvidia Shield and Do I need rooted to use openvpn?
I wanted to use torrent client via remote desktop access my Nvidia Shield from my PC Windows 7 while not interrupt my daughter watching the show Netflix on the Nvidia Shield etc.
I would recommend using a seedbox!
Roger that, I noticed Reddit mentioned best way to get seedbox somewhere outside of U.S. Anyways thanks, I guess i'll go get Whitebox or Feral seedbox.
Has anyone set up a VPN application on the Shield? How well does it work? Any recommendations?
TeamViewer doesn't give remote control, just file-level stuff.
I used OpenVPN on my Nvidia Shield Pro, It worked fine as long as the VPN Provider give you the key and config file and however sometime the VPN disconnected then reconnect few times in an hour alone. Not very stable. I gave up because I don't want risk leaking E.g. DNS leak and IP address leak coming from torrent. Like @n1gh7mar3 said seedbox is best and safe. I will just wait whosoever make better ROM or UbuntuOS under MultiROM support for Nvidia Shield that something will provide a very stable and easy use VPN.
Where I live and my ISP spying my traffic. so this is the reason I asked and took @n1gh7mar3 advice.

Private Internet Access (PIA) VPN on Fire TV Stick

My Fire Stick arrived today (3/27/2018), and after getting Kodi installed, the next thing on my To Do list was getting PIA working. First I tried getting it setup through my router, but the speed was incredibly slow through the OpenVPN configuration on my router.
After reading on a rather old thread that someone got PIA working, I decided to give it a shot, and with a little tweaking, I got it working.
1. You need to have Downloader installed for the first step. I've uploaded the PIA apk to my private server. Here's the link:
Code:
http://bit.ly/2Gd1DIB
2. After Downloader does its thing, install the apk. Just a note, the first time I tried to install, it failed. After the second time, it successfully installed.
3. PIA won't show up on your list of installed applications, but it's there, and there's a way to open it. You'll need to download ES File Explorer, which will let you open 3rd party apps that have been installed, but don't appear in the Fire TV GUI.
4. For configuring PIA properly, at the very least you'll need a mouse connected to your Fire Stick. For the record, USB will work, provided you have a USB OTG adapter like this one. I'm sure bluetooth works too. Based on my personal testing with the various PIA servers, the Midwest and Western servers seemed to be the quickest.
5. Using the mouse to navigate the PIA app, you'll need to enter your login information. After that, select your preferred region, and in the settings, enable the "connect on boot" option.
That's it!

I have been running pia vpn since I got my Firestick a couple years ago and have not noticed any streaming issues. I dump out on a Swiss server because streaming and downloading of copyrighted material is fine as long as it is personal use for now but the Netherlands was good but they are cracking down. Gave up on Kodi and run Terriaum tv as the addons are useless. Working on setting up a Nuc i3 with Debian os and doing a split tunnel vpn and reverse proxy for a Usenet/Torrent downloader as they are really cracking down on these streaming APKs. So far it has been a pain due to learning Linux, setting up a headless server, screwing with iptables, router and revere proxy bs.

It will be slightly slower than your ISP's normal bandwidth speed, but that's true of every VPN. Using the PIA app on my MacBook, I've had speeds up to 40 Mbps, which is more than adequate for streaming.
Having used PIA now for going on a third year, it's been very reliable, and the cost is very reasonable.
Hey yall!..im very new to this whole vpn thing and really kind of computer stupid..lol...but i read all the time about getting a vpn to protect your privacy and all..so i purchasd PIA for my firestick..my question is how do i know if its working?.any help at at all would bd greatly appreciated..ty in advance!
Easy PIA fire stick installation.
I read the instructions for the previous installation of PIA on the fire stick and feel those are a bit cumbersome. The process from my perspective also adds unnecessary
applications to the fire stick.
What I've done as an alternative is install apps2fire on my phone and then any application I want installed on the fire stick can be installed.
1) Application gets installed on my phone. (TEA tv, PIA...)
2) Open up Apps2fire and put in the IP of the fire stick.
3) In Apps2Fire select the application you want installed on the fire stick.
4) Select install and give it a few minutes
5) Go to applications in the Fire Stick menu and open up the app and configure.
Have fun
PIA for fire.
Much easier way to install PIA on a fire device. Use the Downloader App, and use bit.ly/Piafire, and your done. It doesn’t work on fire sticks.

I've been using PIA on my home PC for a while and it works great, but on the FireTV, I have major issues with streaming for some reason. Apps like popcorn time and such will pull a fast streaming speed the first min or two but then it will literally drop to 0kb/sec and continue to yoyo up and down, making any streaming unwatchable. I have no such issues using it on my PC.
This is on a 2nd gen fire stick and 2nd gen FireTV (Gaming edition)
And there's a much easier way to install it on your fire TV. Just download the Apps2Fire app to you phone or tablet and it will push any app installed on that device to your fire TV. I've installed a ton of apps this way to my FireTV's and it takes like 2 mins without wasting time with that crappy downloader app.
