[Guide] Imitating the Google Pixel 2 (Mar20) - HTC U11 Guides, News, & Discussion

UPDATED Mar 20
Hello everyone,
I've been experimenting with ways to recreate the Pixel experience and I've come up with a solid solution. This will require access to adb shell and does NOT require root. You will also receive OTA updates.
Your phone will have the Pixel Launcher, the Pixel Lock Screen and most of the stock google apps.
Step 1 - Installing Pixel Launcher
Download Pixel 2 Launcher and install it.
Enable App Shortcuts
Go to Settings > Apps > ... drop down > Configure Apps > Home App > select "Pixel Launcher"
Enable Notification Dots and Calendar Widget
Go to Settings > Apps > Pixel Launcher > Permissions > Enable All
Step 2 - Set Phone to Dev Mode
Enable developer options on your phone.
Settings > About > Software Information > More > Tap "Build Number" until you get a prompt for dev options.
Settings > Developer Options > Toggle "USB Debugging"
Plug your phone into your computer.
Step 3 - Install ADB and Remove Bloat
Install ADB
Enter adb shell and use the following commands to uninstall stock apps. This does not actually remove them from the phone but uninstalls them from the current user, thus making them disappear from your app list.
Access Shell
adb shell
HTC Sense Home
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.htc.launcher
HTC Lockscreen
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.htc.lockscreen
Note: You will lose HTC lock screen gestures.
HTC Phone
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.android.incallui
HTC Contacts
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.htc.contacts
HTC MMS |
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.htc.sense.mms
HTC Mail
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.htc.android.mail
HTC Help
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.htc.guide
HTC Clock
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.htc.android.worldclock
HTC Alexa
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.htc.htcalexa
HTC Sense Companion
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.htc.aiclient
Republic News
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.mobilesrepublic.appy
DUAL SIM USERS ONLY
Set SIM to allow Google Phone and Android Messages
settings put global multi_sim_sms 1
Thanks to @Electronic Punk & @[Fenix]
Optional:
DUO
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.google.android.apps.tachyon
GOOGLE VR
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.google.vr.vrcore
HTC Weather
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.htc.Weather
HTC Quick Launcher
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.htc.quicklauncher
HTC ZOE - If you don't use hyperlapse.
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.htc.zero
Step 4 - Install and Configure Software
Phone OS
Set Display Size to Pixel 2 Equivalent
Go to Settings > Developer Options > Smallest width > Change to "411"
This is the default on the Pixel 2.
Google Apps
Install Google Phone
Go to Settings > Apps > ... drop down > Configure Apps > Phone App > select "Phone"
Install Google Contacts
Install Android Messages
Go to Settings > Apps > ... drop down > Configure Apps > SMS App > select "Messages"
Install Google Clock
Install Google Wallpaper
Choose whatever apps you want on top of these (Hangouts, Gmail, etc.)
If there are additional applications you would like removed, download App Inspector and you can get the path for any app on your phone.

Assuming you meant "Everything work well?" The answer is yes. I've been doing this for about 4 months and never had any issues with it. The biggest risk is the lock screen and phone, both work great.
In fact, I can't think of a single thing that doesn't work or has errored, but that is only based on my work flow. Perhaps others could find an issue, so no guarantees!

I've never used it, I moved it to optional.
Edit: Just tried it. You can capture a hyperlapse and view the first frame in camera but not see the whole thing.

Nice! Will give it a shot over the weekend. Thank you ?.

Just FYI for everyone who plans on disabling the Lockscreen via ADB. I did it and the gestures stop work (double tap to wake for example). Any solution for that?

I've added a note to the OP. You're right, forgot to mention it because i always disable those gestures to save battery. With the fingerprint reader as a home button, I never found them useful. Thanks for pointing it out.

Thanks for this.
For those using dual SIM HTC U11, don't uninstall HTC MMS/SMS as we can't use Android Messages yet (due to this issue)

Ok, then that is my point. Because this thread is about imitating Google Pixel 2, so the idea is to use Android Messages to do that. Of course that is not to say you can't use other application but that is not the point of this topic here.

Tip: Turn off annoying "Power Management Tips" notifications

Step 1: Enable Stamina mode and Low battery mode.,
Step 2: Set both of them to only activate when battery level is below 1%
Step 3: Don't let your battery level drop below 1%
That should take care of those 2 notifications. If anyone has figured out how to get rid of all the other annoying Sony notifications, please post.
There is another way to stop it
If these stamina notification fade in you can use two fingers on this notification and pull it down...
there is a checkbox you can deselect to hide these upcoming notifications

Like every notification on Android, you go in the Application menu, you search for the app concerned and uncheck "show notifications"

I thought every app having the permission to post a notification was in the app listing with the possibility to disable the notifications. Eco mode Control have his checkbox greyed out.
Apparently, the "real" apps involved are “SemcPowerSaveModule.apk , Settings.apk and SuperStamina.apk” and I don't see them in the app list so forget my quote :silly:

OK: Interesting bit of knowledge, which in this case doesn't help much, but might still be nice to know:
If you don't see an app in the listing or if it's checkbox is greyed out, use this:
Code:
adb shell
pm hide com.package.name
to reverse it, replace "hide" with "unhide".
This hides the app from the system, including in the drawer. It is similar to "disabling" system apps. Not recomended for things you actually use, e.g. com.android.settings or com.sonymobile.superstamina. They will not work afterwards. It works very well with the annoying "low storage" notification though. Package name is com.sonymobile.storagechecker. Just try it out, you can always unhide, and the changes are instantaneous.
ADB is great.
You can for example find packages by
Code:
adb shell
pm list packages searchterm
so for example
Code:
pm list packages settings
produces a list of all packages with "settings" in the name.
Code:
pm list packages -s settings
shows only system apps with "settings" in the name.
If you want to play around in ADB by yourself, use a questionmark after a command to see all the avaliable options for this command. The two basic commands are am (activity manager) and pm (package manager)
Code:
adb shell pm ?

I tried installing the latest play services and I can see google assistant already in the settings from the google app. But it still doesn't work. When i say ok google, it's just the same old google voice search. I'm also using nova launcher btw.

Don't set a home button shortcut in Nova - leave it default. Clear all the data from Google app and the cache from play services, and then reboot. When it boots back up long press the home button and you should have either the assistant or on tap.

Try the Get Assistant app in the play store, or I think there's a Magisk module to enable assistant. I'm out of ideas though lol

Oh wow, this is hell man. not even a patch or any workaround? I happen to really enjoy the increased usability that comes with the custom dpi. I tried googling for answers but no luck.
Do you access the assistant through a long press on home button. On Chinese axon 7 this is not possible as the language needs to be set as Chinese
This is what I get

There's a adb command to set dpi.. haven't tried this personally on this phone but this should work on any android.
adb shell wm density DPI && adb reboot

If you have twrp, just go to terminal and type "wm density DPI" then reboot.
Now we just change the DPI in the command to our default value. 640 I think, not sure though.
You can change the DPI in settings>display if you're on nougat..
How do you enable the home button to open up Google assistant? Just says it needs Chinese language
I have assistant in Google app. Changed voice button to search but it's still the old Google home voice!!! Why no option to set up the assistant
Do you manage to say "Ok Google" at any time working? Here in my phone this option is greyed and I cannot use it. Google Assistent does appears in Google, Search options in settings, and it seems to be turned on, also Google is selected in Assist & voice input and My Voice is disabled. I cannot whatelse to configure... It seems that My Voice blocks long press home functions for me.

[NO ROOT][Guide] Disable lockscreen on Amazon Prime BLU R1 HD

Someone asked this in a thread recently but I can't find it now so I'm putting this here. If you install https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lockscreenapp.keypadlockscreen and just keep it installed (without having it enabled) it will automatically block the system lockscreen. I did this on a phone with the ads removed already, so my lockscreen just was blank (with a pin), but I'd assume it would work the same if you weren't rooted with the ads taken out. If someone would try and report back here that'd be great.
Enjoy
You may need to enable it once to make this work (you can keep it disabled after that).

I did this with my girlfriend R1 HD and can confirm that the method removes all the ads.
But, as you said, it seems that there's a default lockscreen wallpaper image somewhere in the system and it gets applied after reboot.
If you are like my girlfriend and don't reboot the phone so often here's what you can do to completely remove the ads again:
Reinstall "Amazon Offers" from the Play Store (link)
Lock your screen
Receive a notification (send yourself an email/whatsapp/whatever)
When the notification is displayed on your lock screen you should have your own wallpaper as a background and an Amazon advertising as a notification
Enable USB debugging and plug your phone into your PC, open a terminal and run:
Code:
adb shell pm uninstall --user 0 com.amazon.phoenix
Enjoy your completely ad-free phone until you reboot (at that time you could simply repeat this process)

This process I worked at 80% in my Blu R1 HD V8.4, I do not leave the ads, only one of the book and ready nothing annoying or repetitive as before, this while leaving the root for this version.:good:
you guys should honestly just root because that amazon offers process still is running in the background wasting battery and if you force stop it it eventually turns itself back on not to mention the bloatware makes the blu r1 hd seem soooo slow
Can I do this with v9.2?

Oneplus gestures

https://www.xda-developers.com/how-...es-navigation-oneplus-5-5t-android-10-update/
This is present on the 8 Pro too, but back also trigger home in my case ?
Does anyone know why and how to fix?
Same for me love the old one plus gesture of swiping up from the corners to go back, and this edit using the app in the article brings that back, but correct when you swipe up from corner instead of taking you back to the previous page in an app etc ,it just takes you straight to home screen .
It seems both OP gestures and a10 gestures are on simultaneously. There should be a way to disable a10 ones
I got it fully working on my 8 Pro I just need the assistant disabled it keeps popping up when I go back. I asked on the other thread (themes and apps) of the 2 button gestures control got no reply it's been a fews days. Disable assistant on settings
---------- Post added at 12:19 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:13 PM ----------
Settings>apps& notification>default apps>assist & voice input>assist app> none
I wasn't able to disable Assistant as I have no option other than Google in the Assist & Voice input.
I found a way to disable the Assistant with the following adb command:
Code:
adb shell settings put secure assistant 0
This will remove the assistant gesture completely.
The only problem, that the setting resets after restart.
Another possible solution is to install Tasker from the Play Store and start it up.
Go to Settings > Apps & notifications > Default apps > Assist & voice input > Assist app. Select Tasker and click OK.
Perform the assistant gesture and click "Stop Reminding".
Open Tasker again and in the menu on the top right just select Disable Tasker.

You can disable it through settings. Unsure of exactly where the setting is, but in settings, search for default assist.
Is it just me that despite all this tricks still ends up home when swiping for back on the right hand side?
I manage to only go back, but for that to work I need to swipe aaaal the way to the right (like on the curved part), and still there it triggers the to lines coming in from the sides and meeting up in the middle. I think this is something like a animation for the assistant.
I didn't know I was able to disable it (Google Assistant). thank you very much. Done and back to stock OnePlus gestures control. ? Much appreciated

And this option (none) as it is shown on the picture isn't shown to me. There are only Google Assistant, Firefox and a third app to choose but the option"none"is not offered. So it seems I am unable to disable the Assistant to get back the OnePlus gestures. Someone has any advice how to get it disabled?
If you follow my post to change it via the command of just change it to use Tasker, it'll work.
I don't have to option to select nothing either, but with the ADB command, you can force it, until a restart and this method will disable the gesture completely. If you decide to use tasker, the gesture will stay there, so you'll see the lines going from the corners towards the middle, but no action to8 be performed.

Yeah I have the same problem in apps and notifications / default apps./ Assist. On previous devices this is where I disabled the assistant, but the option none isn't here. The one found if searching for "default assist" is somewhere else, I think somewhere in Google settings as the background color changes to a lighter one.

Hello, is this still possible with the new Android 11 update? I just tried the op_gesture_button_side_enabled and it only sort of works, I can disable google assistant with adb however swipe up from the bottom side triggers both back and home action now.. Anyone solved this problem?
