EDL mode - Xiaomi Mi Max 2 Guides, News, & Discussion

EDL (Emergency Download) Mode has been removed/ disable from MIUI 8.1 onwards and Redmi 4A later Xiaomi devices. So you can flash MIUI Fastboot ROMs on your device by using Fastboot mode only, if your bootloader is unlocked. And, we can't use Qualcomm Jig Cable(s) also now.
So, we have only one way to know Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 port from PC. It's Test Point Method. This method will work with every MIUI ROMs (Upgrade/ Downgrade) , Locked Bootloader/ Unlocked Bootloader and also work to recover from a Dead boot device (Bricked).
While touching these two points with a metal tweezers plugin the usb cable to the phone and PC will make the phone enter edl mode. You can then release the tweezers.

Bro edl mode is not removed. It's just moved to fastboot. You can enter edl easily by "fastboot oem edl" command. Hope this helped

What makes you think I'm so lame as well. I have used this command and flashed my mi max 2 with fastboot rom. Tho I don't remember if bootloader was locked or unlocked. Probably it was unlocked. But still no issues as anyone can unlock thier bootloader officially.

i wasnt intended at you. it seems they forgot some ways when they first deployed the edl blocking access but with the most recent "roms" they have blocked every access way to edl when bootloader is locked : adb, fastboot & cable
the only way left is from internal pins, but we can expect they will hide them even better on new phones.
Today it's much worth to wait 72h (+30days if you just already unlocked another one today) than opening the models that have "non removable" batteries and risking to leave traces/damages
it's really a shame that xiaomi lock their phone this way, it's a very bad message at the users (fastboot is so much restricted that you cant even switch between stable&dev anymore with locked bootloader) but we still have the chance that they allow unlocking and that this unlocking is a real one allowing full control

Fastboot rom isn't needed untill we brick our device and we can't brick the device untill we have unlocked bootloader. So basically edl mode will work when it's really needed.

It doesn't work for my MM2. Got it since 4/12/17. Didn't know i need to login to mi acc to register my device, set usb debugging, developer's mode, unlock status...I had the phone for less than 2 hrs after updating to MIUI 9 from ver 8 (using the updater app) before it suddenly froze up, crashed and went into bootloop. I tried contacting xiaomi svc ctr but those clowns refused to help saying my device is china export.
I cldn't even get them to help me register my device on my mi acc using the imei & s/n info. So if anyone could offer some suggestions as to how I could ressurrect my phone, I wld be most grateful. Failing which the only avenue is to bring it to a svc ctr in China to get them fix it.
Rgds

My test points don't seem to work
I opened up my mi max2 and followed the steps to short the testpoints but my pc doesn't seem to pick up the Qualcomm device.
Anyway to trigger the thing so that the Qualcomm device can be detected?

I managed to short the test points and got the Qualcomm HSB device on the device mgr, flashed the mi max2 with the latest global stable (V9.2.1) rom. But the phone is still stuck at the Android logo with 3 dots...
I wld have thought EDL flashing wld have wiped out everything on the phone and start afresh?
I am now thinking of formatting the entire phone and reflashing it again. How wld I do that?
Thanks for any inputs.

Hi, Does EDL with test point flashing refresh the boot partitions?
I have shorted the test points and successfully reflash the phone with the latest stable global ROMs (even back to MIUI 8.5.6) but just couldn't get the phone past the MI/Android logo after restarting it
If the boot partition files have been messed up and EDL flashing is not refreshing these files, no matter how many times I try to EDL flash the device, it's not going to help. Pls correct me if I am wrong.
Any other options I can try?

[HELP] Bricked my phone

Helo!
I recently purchased a Redmi 3s which came with a fake rom so I decided to flash a new rom. I tried it via the updater app but it didnot work. Then after reading a few trick I tried the fastboot method but the process got stuck and now my phone cant boot. I was able to boot in fastboot and I see it in list of the devices but the mi flash tool keeps crashing.
Note: my bootloader is locked and I dont have any custom recover it was a stock phone.
Hi,
what means crashing? You get an error message?
You habe to try another MiFlash Version. The latest also didnt work for me.
You have to flash the latest developer rom to unlock the bootloader.
You can't flash ROMs through fastboot if your bootloader isn't unlocked... Never mind now you try to enter fastboot and flash a TWRP into it.

I cant flash a reccovery because it says it is locked.
Apparently there's a method that involves using EDL mode and a deep flash cable, not sure if it'll work in your case or not

Considering that the said method restores your phone and you have a spare USB cable lying around, I'd say it's worth a try

same issue here, I was talking about my problem here
Trying to find a way to fix it, thanks!
If you have locked bootloaders, the only way to recover your phone is flashing ROM using MiFlash. To do it, you need to enter EDL. Now the only way for locked bootloader users is deep flash cable. You can google for guide how to make it. The trick is to connect green cable to the black one.
If you want to unlock bootloader and don't stuck at 50%, you need to flash a DEVELOPER ROM (International/Chinese, doesn't matter).
Forget all the complicated deep flash cable making guides. There's an ultra easy way to make one. Just strip off the outer jacket of a usb cable, about an inch or so, exposing the 4 wires inside. Then just push a pin or needle through the green and black wires like this guy has done. Easy peasy!
I made mine this way and was able to enter edl mode and flash a fastboot rom.

Recover from Hard Brick (900e) - Revive our Z2 WITHOUT DATA LOSS

Hey!
Z2 owners that like to mess around with their phones are prone to get f#ked. I was there and I faced the problem some of you probably did - a hard brick. There are a ton of tutorials on how to fix it, but I believe I found a new way that doesn't envolve resetting it. I have only tried with twice on my phone, so I'm really looking forward to know if it's universal!
Scenario - Your phone has a black screen. The notification LED is on. If you hold the power button it flashes the ZUK logo and it vibrates. If you identify with this scenario, go forward!
1 - To turn off your device (if you haven't already), press the power + volume up. The phone will vibrate, flash the ZUK logo, turn off the LED and turn it on again. Continue holding both buttons. When the LED turns off again, REMOVE your fingers from both buttons right away. If done correctly, it won't come back again and the LED will be off
2 - Hold both Volume Up and Volume Down at the same time. Connect to the computer. You should encounter your Fastboot mode (with your baseband and other info blank).
3 - Go to your email and redownload the bootloader unlocker. Yes, remember that file? Use it. You can use one of those unlock bootloader tutorials online, but if you know what you're doing, here's the command:
fastboot -i 0x2b4c flash unlock unlock_bootloader.img
4 - Right after that, run this other command
fastboot -i 0x2b4c oem unlock-go
That's it. You should be able to go to the recovery (flash it again just to be sure). Try it out and tell me how it goes.
not working...phone is gettin turned off...but holding up and down..then connecting is doin nothing..it just keeps on going on and off again
This method worked for me,thank a lot of,great trick

Softbricked axon 7, need help !

Hey guys, I have a A2017 axon 7, and I tried to upgrade from Marshmalow to nougat by flashing the B04 update from TWRP. I have now the factory recovery mode, and when I try to go in fastboot, it tries to launch the bootloader( which just tells me that my device software cannot be checked for corruption and that I need to lock my bootloader). When I try to boot normally it stays on the same "bootloader screen" and tells me to press the start button which makes the phone display the linux logo.... I'm a bit lost, I'm on ArchLinux could you pls help me ?
Thx !

Well, you should use MiFlash and install the stock system through EDL. The problem is that MiFlash is for Windows x64. if you could get a win10 x64 pc, you could fix it in a minute.
Or get to the recovery if you can, and flash Nougat again but via an SD card. But maybe you won't be able to get to the recovery mode

How did you relock the bootloader? If you used a guide, you should have found a warning, and if you used axon7toolkit a message should've popped up.
You messed up. Real bad. You are probably on DFU mode, and the only ways to get out of there are:
-discharge the battery completely and try to enter FTM mode (i think you have to do that while it is connected to a PC), I think it was with volume down + power. this method works for very few people. If you enter ftm mode, issue 'adb reboot edl' and use MiFlash right away with a FULL_EDL package
-use the 4th category brick repair manual (disassemble the phone, short some pins)

I think DFU Mode is when I get recognized as ZTE Handset diagnostic .... according to this guide : https://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/how-to/a2017-4th-category-brick-repair-manual-t3585898) It's a2017 but still.
"Axon 7 restore manual from bricked conditions when only ZTE Handset Diagnostic Interface(DFU) (COM...) mode is detected"
But I get recognized as QDloader 9008 and miflash also recognizes it as com10 or something.

it's not necessarily like that. DFU mode is just a mode in which the phone can be. Sometimes Windows just installs the QDLoader driver even though it's not EDL. and if you tried miflash and it didn't work, then it's most probably that.
There's a way to check. If you go to Properties, there should be a number that identifies the mode. if you google it and 'dfu interface' appears, then you are dfu-bricked
But if you locked the bootloader without being fully stock then it's most probably dfu bricked anyways
Again, how did you lock the bootloader?
I don't actually know if I really locked the bottloader.
So, I had unlocked bootloader and twrp. I just bootet into the bootloader, typed "fastboot oem lock" in adb and it said OK on the PC.
But on the phone it never asked me if I want to lock it or anything. And I never said MiFlash isn't working. It recognizes my phone but i judt didn't TRY to flash anything because I didn't want to make the situation even worse perhaps

Lol it doesn't ask you if you want to lock it, that's the point with bootloader mode. there's no system, no UI, and you make stuff via commands.
This is why you shouldn't even attempt this kind of stuff without knowing how it works. At least if you had used axon7toolkit, it would've told you not to.
Find a FULL_EDL package for your model. If you have an A2017, simply use this one:

or

Unzip it, leave the folder somewhere handy, put the phone in what you believe is EDL, open MiFlash and select the folder, and flash

Okay let me tell you this real straight. I have done this. I have the G packages, I just thought you were the op for some reason. Look at the back of the phone and confirm whether you have an A2017G or an A2017 just in case, or you might mess up even more, as hard as that can be.
at any rate, your fears are all dumbfounded, because in the situation that you are in, you have 3 options:
a) disregard all the help that i'm trying to give you, even though I have already done the process; and keep your brick on a shelf.
b) search on google or xda yourself, then do the process, without bothering here with your lack of trust
c) follow my advice and do the damn process
Whichever option you choose, I'm gonna leave the package here:

or

Again, I HAVE FOLLOWED THE 4TH CATEGORY BRICK REPAIR GUIDE AND FIXED MY G. I flashed stuff through EDL at least 10 times. And there wouldn't be a bunch of EDL packages for the G if they had a 100% chance of bricking your phone
So. If you decide to do this, turn your phone off. connect the USB cable to the PC but not the phone. Hold both volume buttons (but not the power button) and insert the USB cable at the same time. Then fire up MiFlash and try to flash the file (you have to unzip the folder, then select the folder on miflash, then flash. Here 2 things may happen:
a) it flashes and you can just go bother someone else
b) it doesn't and you have to follow the 4th category brick repair guide
Simple as that. if it fails, you might want to check if the 'Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008' is actually EDL mode or DFU mode, so you can do that by going to properties and checking some device identifier number on google (haven't done that, i just read that it can be done somewhere here).

Hard Bricked 6T (No TWRP, OEM locked, MSM not working)

Hello dear community,
I've been playing with my 6t for a long time, hundreds of custom roms, kernels, etc..
Lastly I went to official oxygen 10. I tried to install twrp via fastboot but every time I tried to push the files, I would get a error. I reinstalled drivers, tried different ports, different tools..
I got mad and blindly followed some article where someone suggested putting "persist" in the fastboot command, I tried it, I thought it is some kind of "force push" the file and that is how I probably corrupted persist partition. DUMB
Phone not booting of course and I went to restore it with Msmdownload tool.
It did not fixed it.
I tried different versions of msm, I tried going to Hydrogen, tried different USB ports, tried type C ports, different PCs...
No luck, phone is stuck at bootloop, with no TWRP and bootlocked.
I read somewhere that Msmdownload tool is not flashing persist partition and I assume that is the reason why my phone can't be restored.
Fastboot commands are not working anymore and EDL mode is probably the only possible way to communicate with the device.
I live in Montenegro and I can't send phone to oneplus to repair it.
I searched the threads and noticed that some users with similar problem eventually succeed to restore the phone by flashing it with Msm multiple times. I am still trying to do it but no luck.
I would really appreciate help from dev mastermind.
Thank you!
If your bootloader is locked again, i think it is not possible to use Msn tool. I think the only way is to send it for repair if you can't boot the phone.
But maybe i'm wrong and someone else know the sollution.

You are correct. Msm tool will work on locked bootloader.
Man that sucks. Seems like you might be screwed. I screwed up a couple times getting to A10 but I was able to get msm tool to work for me. You are using it while your phone is powered off, correct?
Try different version of android with msm tool. Like try using the Android 10 msm tool then try the Android 9 msm tool

Hi GeekMcLeod, That's right, I boot it in bootloader mode, select "turn off" just to be sure that phone is shut down. And then I hold volume up and volume down together and plug the cable so it goes in EDL mode. Windows recognize it just as Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008, and that is all right I think.
Then I start MSMdownload tool and it flashes everything in around 200 seconds. I leave phone pluged in while it try to boots, but it never boot up. I left it for 45 minutes but still nothing...

Sounds like a driver problem to me. Try gathering a few (by Google, OnePlus, perhaps even Samsung) and keep trying different ones. I had to do this on my OnePlus One years ago. Then suddenly I found one that worked and I could revive it back from the dead. Not saying that it would work for you but it might. In my case it was a Qualcomm tool. If you still end up with nothing but dead ends today, I'd initiate a chat with OnePlus on this page (select your country at the bottom of the page first).

The only solution is to use smt mode inside msmdownloadtool, which will restore persist partition, but with some disadvantages.
Be aware that you WILL LOSE YOUR IMEIs and WIDEVINE L1, use it at your own risk.
If you decide to do it (remember you WILL LOSE YOUR IMEIs and WIDEVINE L1!) follow this:
1.- Run MSMDownloadTool.
2.- Click on Verify and wait till it says "MD5 Check OK!".
3.- Then click on SMT Mode.
4.- Then click on Start like you would normally do with upgrade mode.
5.- The you need to enter as password "te123" and select your phone's capacity.
6.- If it says something like "Port disabled by user", go to the top left corner and click on "SMT", "COM Setup" and check everything, then click on the left button, and retry steps 4-5.
7.- When the process finishes the phone won't reboot, so you'll need to hold VolumeUP+Power until it powers on, then wait around 5 minutes and your phone will be back to life!!
8.- If you have an IMEI backup, just follow this guide (https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-6t/how-to/guide-oneplus-6t-unlock-bootloader-t3851789) (I don't know if this is the correct way to post links)
I hope you get your phone fixed.

Don't go to edl mode. Just have your phone powered off and use msm tool. I used it a couple times while getting to A10 and I only ever had to power my phone off.

@Papagaj do this....thats the only fix....I purposely wipe persist for to test something and I did that to recover from the boot loop.. persist store sensor information that vital to getting phone to boot....that's why it not booting..kernel is look for the sensor info but can't find it

Timmmmaaahh I am so glad to see you on my thread! I learned fundamentals of flashing on your guides back in Bacon days, and never bricked it even once! But this A/B partitions really gave me headaches....
It is highly likely that drivers are causing problem, I tried to flash it with msm tool on fresh windows where I let it to automatically download required drivers and the msm progress appear to be same as when I used drivers which are recommended by msmtool developer. I will try several more and will be back with results within few hours.

Is there a way to backup IMEI and WIDEVINE L1 at this moment? I think it is highly unlikely because functionality is limited to EDL only....
Or is there a way I can restore it later if I manage to fix a device with smt mode?

How do you mean? I can't get phone connected with msm tool if it is not in EDL mode.. It is not recognized when in stock recovery, bootloader or trying to boot up OS, that is only three states this phone can be at the moment.

You and me both! ? lol...
I recently got stuck in a weird bootloop thing with a, what i think was, corrupted boot.img. Try finding a stock android boot.img, boot to fastboot, and run the command fastboot flash boot <boot.img> on both partition A and B. If you can't find a stock boot.img, i managed to find one and can link to a download.
All right, here is the situation.
I finally managed to boot up the phone. amt911 gave working instructions on post #10. Thank you bro, you are awesome, and Thank you Tech_Savvy for confirming the method, you are badass who deletes partitions just for fun!
All right I got the phone booted up but as amt911 mentioned, I lost my IMEI numbers, without IMEI numbers you can't dial numbers, receive calls or use mobile data.
BACKUP IMEI NUMBERS FOLKS, you never know when the partitions will screw you over!
I was dumb one without backup and I had to contact Oneplus support for help. I was suprised how quickly I got into communications with one of the assistants.. in less than 10 seconds.
They ask you to do full reset via stock recovery and some other basic troubleshoots, after nothing, obviously, fix the missing IMEI they will arrange remote session to get your phone fixed.
You have to persist on remote session as some of assistants told me that I have to send the phone to repair.
Before they arrange session for you, you need to show them "proof of the purchase" ALSO KEEP THAT FOLKS I lost mine long time ago but luckily I found photo of invoice I took when I bought phone, phew*
I didnt have it at first when I contacted them and they say there is nothing they can do without a proof! DON'T STEAL PHONES FOLKS and then ask for support...
They will contact me for session within 48 hours and I will share the experience here.
Thank you again people!

Thank you JTVivian for helpful suggestion, but that method would not work. When your bootloader is locked, fastboot commands are useless, you can't flash anything.

device bricked by itself..? unable to boot or charge

i shut down my device by tapping power off. then removed sim card and sd card after screen went black. but when i tried to power on, it doesnt respond.. i tried holding the power button for 10s, it gives me a black screen and vibrates and instantly closes again.. so i cant boot into recovery, i cant boot to fastboot, and its unreadable on pc, it doesnt charge, no bootlogo, nothing. just bricked..
.
i dont know why, but it just bricked by itself.. i've been using mokee 9 date of 1/1/2020 thats the last update i installed, with add on su and everything was working perfectly and even if i reboot multiple times..
bootloader was unlocked so xiaomi centers wont help me..
how is it possible to make it boot again? i mean like wtf even happened? i did nothing.. i didnt flash anything and system was READ ONLY before powering off.. all i did was remove sim and sd cards... even after flashing mokee updates yesterday, it booted normally and idk what's going on..
any help?
EDIT: the phone's hard disk IC was damaged. I went to a tech guy and he changed it but then the motherboard broke entirely after flashing the qcn file for imei. Device out of warranty of course because of the damn bootloader. Thank you xiaomi for the great phone that only lasted one month before dying completely.
attempt 2
in attempt 1 i tried force reboot as mentioned, didnt work
attempt 2 : i tried force reboot while plugged to pc, this showed up
attempt 3
i tried to flash a new firmware, but device unreadable. must be on fastboot mode for mi flasher to be able to read it. im starting to lose hope.. the device is new though it makes me sad
on some topic of a bricked phone online, someone mentioned that he should try EDL mode, by cmd command FASTBOOT OEM EDL
so i tried it many times until it said successful. but still didnt fix anything, because it didnt actually boot into EDL mode, had to open my device physically and use test points. so attempt 4 failed
does this mean fastboot works?
after attempt 4, it said successful so if fastboot works like that then i can flash stock boot.img or something.. right? which image should i start with

this is the forum of the bricked phone similar to mine, except that i didnt try any flash like him it just happened randomly
https://c.mi.com/thread-2334646-1-0.html
attempt 5
attempt 5 failed, i tried flashing whole firmware one by one, i started with vbmeta, then recovery but it failed. idk what to do
notice
i have noticed that it only flashes small img files, if its 100kb or more it will fail. maybe due to device restart because the only way to make it read in fastboot mode is to force restart multiple times until it flashes. what to do now?
attempt 6
so according to this video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJoIiLE_w3w
he installed a driver (name in attachment) then refreshed on mi flash so his device became readable on mi flasher
i tried that but it didnt work.
final attempt.. out of hope
found the possible solution. its called a deep flash cable, i will just go to any tech guy and ask him for help.
see attachment for info.

In order to enter test point / EDL / 9008 mode, you have to physically open your device and connect two points on the phone's board. Search on YouTube for Redmi 7a EDL. If you get to EDL mode, you can flash original stock firmware via MiFlash.
Reason for brick

Yes, I hate tearing up my device so I took it to a professional. He failed to open ADL but he did the 9008. Now he waits some kind of credit. Not sure if for the app to work or for the bootloader to unlock, although it was already unlocked but maybe somehow got locked..
Any way, expected reason for brick is either latest magisk module, or kernel tweaks..
I gave the device to a professional, but he also failed to flash it even with test point. He said he was searching for a file.. I dont remember its name, something like IMOH..
Now I need to know any possible reason that might brick my phone again to avoid it

i did the test point, booted to 9008 mode but still nothing.
i think i know why the phone got bricked by itself, it got ARB stands for AUTOROLLBACK
read more about it here https://mi-globe.com/unbrick-your-xiaomi-phone-without-authorized-mi-account/
bootloader got automatically locked again.
Never lock the bootloader if:
- your phone was delivered Chinese version and you flashed Global firmware
- your phone was delivered Global version and you flashed Chinese firmware
- you changed system, vendor, boot or recovery partition
- you installed a custom or modified stock rom
ARB isn't an issue with this phone I suppose. Because I was on 11.0.5 and rolled back to 10.2.5 without problems.
Have you tried MiFlash Pro?

but im sure i have all drivers installed in fact i used mi flash more than once and it worked perfectly fine, and i swear i didnt try to lock it or anything, what happened is, mokee auto updates installed add on magisk and it was the latest version so i think this might have bricked it. idk..
ok i downloed all the drivers and reinstalled them, same error : "library not registered"
