What is the best ad-free SMS app with ability to block spam based on content? - Essential Phone Questions & Answers

I had heard that android had this built in, but apparently not with the newest messages app. So I need an alternative. Let me know what's out there. Has to be absolutely ad-free and free. If it's a port from another device or older android, that's good enough.
Thanks!

I use Mood Messenger, no adds but I don't think you can blacklist using key words only by number. There is a program in the Play Store named SMS Blocker. It looks like you can block by keyword. I don' t know if it has adds though.

Pulse in the GPStore is both, secure as well.

I looked in F-Droid for an Ad-Free App and tested 5 Apps. All but one could only block by sender-number and not by keyword-filters. And the one that has a SMS message filter is too old and not supported in new Android versions
I would like an App that could whitelist all contacts for SMS and apply keyword filters to the rest of incoming SMS. They are anonymous (no numerical existing Phone-number) and so manual blocking is a useless task...

@ChriMo , did you check "silence" in F-Droid? it might have what your looking for.
good luck

@mrrocketdog I just tried Silence but could not find any setting about filtering incoming SMS with keywords. The App seems focused on the End-to-End encryption of SMS-Messaging including a PIN to protect/encode SMS Messages and the blocking of senders (which also the standard SMS App does).

well … heck. srry about that. but i wasnt sure.

Try "SpamHound" on google play.

Caller Blacklist App ?

Hi
Is there an app that will allow me to either blacklist and reject calls, or direct them to a virtual voicemail box ?
Virtual VM being within the phone not the carrier ?
I had a similar app on my Nokia N95 8GB.
Thanks
You don't need a seperate app. Just add them as a contact and select Send to voicemail. Not tried it though.

I use that a lot problem is your phone still rings then it goes to voicemail, would have been lot better if it went straight to voicemail...

Maybe you can create an mp3 file of silence then set that as the ringtone for those contacts you want to send to voicemail. Will that work?
I just came here about to post the same thing!
Individual blocking on a case by case basis is fine. But not powerful enough. I came from Nokia E series and the only thing I miss is Advanced Call Manager.
If you look up this program, what you will find is that it has some great features:
- You can set up many lists then just tell the phone to use the list for a whitelist or blacklist.
- You can block all unknown numbers.
- Block everyone. Essentially turns phone into pager.
Even blocking calls is done in a variety of ways.
- to voicemail
- to busy tone
- block and send sms
- divert to various numbers depending on mode
Etc.
As you can see, it is a very powerful program that is set up very easily and I never had any complains, only praise. I often used it when I was writing when I would only want my partner and my mother to contact me and would block everyone else.
I have been looking but can't see anything as powerful or as highly rated. What I've found are:
aFirewall
Extreme Call Blocker
Phone Armor C.
But these seem either basic or don't work reliably.

Blocking unwanted incoming calls and sms on HTC Touch Pro2

GodswMobile, the makers of SMS Transfer, have released a new application called Pocket Call Blocker.
As the name would suggest, the purpose of the application is to block unwanted incoming calls and sms. Unlike other software available for doing this, they have managed to keep the application as simple as possible. You simply add numbers to the filter list and the program prevents those numbers from calling you. Also unlike other applications available, the software does not simply ignore calls from those numbers – it instantly hangs up the callers. This prevents the unwanted callers from even reaching your voicemail! BTW, it could also used as a sms spam filter.
Key feature description from pocketcallblocker.com
* Multiple filtering rules - filter by specific numbers, wildcard numbers, anonymous and unidentified numbers, groups/categories numbers, contact/non-contact numbers; all numbers.
* Two incoming phone call block actions - hang up and mute;
* Two SMS block actions - delete and mark as read;
* Built-in phone number block log;
* Run on background;
* Easy way to operate and set up filter rules;
The application runs on Windows Mobile Pocket PC 6, 6.1, and 6.5 and is available from pocketcallblocker.com for $19. But I found a discount order link with 50% off.

AMEN!!! And SPAM! of course. lol
While we're on the subject, I used to use CallFirewall before changing my number, but never found a similar program for text messages. Does anyone know of one?

now, when recieving an incoming call do you still recieve the initial ring before it hangs up? Because ive yet to find a program that completely blocks a call. They just hang up a split second after. if i blocked a number, i want it to go straight to voicemail for that person, without ringing. ill check this one out
I use Photo Contacts Pro myself...not freeware, but it does the job quite nicely hanging up on unwanted calls and sms...
Magicall from mobiion is doing a verny nice job. you can set up different rules for calls and sms and also tell the program what to do with them (ignore, hang up, delete sms, forward, and so on)

Do People realize that call blocking apps have ceased to work on 7?

It is all about the blocking app being able to hangup. Somehow 7 prevents this so all blockers must let the blocked caller go to voicemail. Thanks Google! Did they want the on board blocking to not look as pathetic as really is?
I am looking into Tasker as work around but I am a noob at that app. It may also not work there at all either.
My Googling seems to reveal it being device independent.
So if blocking then 7 forces them to VM! What a letdown this is.
I have voicemail switched off permanently, root call blocker work as a charm.
Mike
I have the ..01 phone & only get to have a warranty.
The stock dialer app allows calls to be blocked under call details. thats the only option but it works for me.
Native call block
If your mzp is up to date, then you should have native call block support in dialer settings. If not, you can use Google dialer and use that as your default dialer.
The best premium apps have voicemail blocking by virtue of the answer & hangup ability.
The stock app/dialer does not offer this feature. It is lame featureless facility.
Both on my old Sony Xperia M4 Aqua and on my new HTC 10, I've used a method that always worked (Lollipop on the M4 Aqua, Nougat/Oreo on the HTC 10).
- Root;
- Install Xposed Installer;
- Install GIN Call Blacklist from the Xposed Module Database (in app, installs the Pro version).
In neither of the two phones I was able to block private calls. I could block individual numbers and names, but private numbers were a no-go.
With GIN Call Blacklist, supported by its Xposed module, those private calls are gone. But there's still something that annoys me.
On the M4 Aqua, I wouldn't even be notified whenever a private call was blocked. Now, on the HTC 10 (Oreo), despite my efforts, I always get a dialer notification that a private call was blocked.
The phone vibrates for a second and shows the notification, but it happens so fast that the ringtone has no time to play.
Despite that, it works. That's that matters. Although it hasn't been updated since 2015.

HELP - Block private/unknown calls

Hi,
is there a way to Block private/unknown calls on stock rom?? Tryed bunch of apps and not working..
any help?
thanks
Truecaller works pretty well
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.truecaller&hl=en_US
Also Calls Blacklist - Call Blocker works well too.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vladlee.easyblacklist&hl=en_US
Both give you the option to automatically block private/unknown numbers. They also give you the option to block a number series (ex. Block numbers that start with 1877)
@ ogkillergreen,
i have tryed truecaller and calls blacklist but they aren't working prorperly..
TRuecaller never blocked a private call... the call blacklist blocks on the begining but then stops to block..

Did i go through all the settings? what do you mean by that? i choose to block unknown/private calls and it didn't block none..
any idea?

Typically (at least for the "calls blacklist" app) the app asks if you want to set up the app as your "default phone" app. If you choose not to do this, then it will not "intercept" any call blocking you have configured. Check to see in your apps, which is the default "phone". If its still your actual "phone" app, then these apps will not be able to block anything.
I actually use Hiya, costs $2.99/month for Android users. (Works on iOS as well). It can do a ton of stuff you are looking for.

In the app i'm using, it initially didn't block either.... coz i missed a few steps (I'm using the app i mentioned in my earlier post, "calls blacklist"). I loaded the app, and turned on the "calls" (I didn't enable sms). Then, i figured out, i had to hit that little "down arrow" on the right, and actually select "private" and "unknown" numbers. Mine has been blocking ever since.
I block unwanted numbers in the dialer itself,,, I have google dialer installed and don't know if OOS dialer has the same options as the google dialer.
This is what i do ,,,,,, Go to dialer settings in settings you see blocked numbers and caller id and spam.
In blocked numbers you can block the spamcaller.
in Caller Id and spam suspected spamcalls.

How to disable spam filter or whitelist numbers?

I'd really like to use the built in SIP client for work, but the spam filter blocks all incoming SIP calls. Is there any way to whitelist or disable it entirely?
What is this spam filter you talk about? If it's an app you downloaded you could try uninstalling it.
Yep, not sure what app your referring to...
probably because of country code most spam comes from sip numbers you could try a different number close to yours
