So what updates are safe for a unlocked Verizon Motorola Moto E4? - Moto E4 Questions & Answers

I've read to make sure you turn off updates just in case Verizon pushes one to block the unlock. So what updates are safe?
so no Android Nougat updates because of Verizon?
Google Play Store updates should be ok?

So far all the updates have not block the unlock. Obviously things can change, but i dont think the probability is high.

System updates won't work anyways if you rooted and installed custom recovery.
App updates are always fine.

So what are the changes? I know there is more than just camera quality and pausing videos. they lock down anything? 4.3 to 4.4 took away my tethering and a few other things. what did they lock this time

Haven't had a chance to check yet. At first glance the only thing I've noticed is it seems a little quicker.
Does this re-lock the bootloader if you paid for the unlock code?

I'm also interested in this. Though, I may just wait, and use this opportunity to flash a stable 4.4.4 based ROM instead. Don't want to lose root or bootloader unlock.

What is safe? You mean it is safe to revert back to stock (and take the xt1028 4.4.4 update) and still not lose root or have bootloader locked again?

When the new cell unlock law goes into effect Motorola should have to give out unlock codes for the XT1028..
I Doubt it. Seeing as the Moto G was manufactured before the law went into effect.

I read nothing in the bill that prohibits the unlocking of any device manufactured prior to the enactment date of the legislation. Specifically, the bill allows unlocking at the direction of the owner of the device:
(c) Unlocking at Direction of Owner.--Circumvention of a
technological measure that restricts wireless telephone handsets or
other wireless devices from connecting to a wireless telecommunications
network--
(1)(A) as authorized by paragraph (3) of section 201.40(b)
of title 37, Code of Federal Regulations, as made effective by
subsection (a); and
(B) as may be extended to other wireless devices pursuant
to a determination in the rulemaking conducted under subsection
(b); or
(2) as authorized by an exemption adopted by the Librarian
of Congress pursuant to a determination made on or after the
date of enactment of this Act under section 1201(a)(1)(C) of
title 17, United States Code,
may be initiated by the owner of any such handset or other device, by
another person at the direction of the owner, or by a provider of a
commercial mobile radio service or a commercial mobile data service at
the direction of such owner or other person, solely in order to enable
such owner or a family member of such owner to connect to a wireless
telecommunications network, when such connection is authorized by the
operator of such network.

I hear you. The only reason I used custom roms was because Verizon had not yet pushed the 4.4.4 ota and now that they have and I have it I have no need for customs roms. Actually I find the 4.4.4 update to be quite a surprise. The camera is much improved imo and the rom seems to be a bit more quicker than before. All-in-all I am glad I reverted back to stock rom and I plan on staying with stock.
P.S. To my understanding Android L is coming later this year to the moto G.

Sprint S7 unlocked: Is there a way to update it safely?

Long time reader...first time poster
I bought an unlocked sprint s7 from ebay and it works like a dream and i was wondering if there was a safe method to update the phone WITHOUT ruining the unlock that the seller put on the phone.
Current software is update PC5 and i would love to benefit from security and bug fixes in new releases.
Thanks in advance!

Most likely not a carrier unlock do to a unlocked padlock during boot animation as well as samsung pay not working due to software mods that im guessing made it unlocked in the first place. Thanks for the reply!

Bootloader unlock and sim unlock are two different things. You said it has an unlock pad on boot up screen. That means it's bootloader is unlocked. Which means if I am correct if it has a custom recovery you are unable to do future ota updates. Can and possibly brick your phone. You can flash a ton that has the new update no issues developers are usually fairly quick to update there rom on the latest ota.

I can confirm that updating over OTA will NOT screw with the unlock of the device. If your samsung pay does not work i would disable knox with a package disabler app to receive samsung pay in you new updated state.
OTA update from PC5 to PH7 on unlocked phone went smoothly.
Thanks
I have a unlocked Sprint S7 but im outside of America, is there any way i can update without losing the unlock? i don't want to end with an expensive brick.

I bought unlocked sprint s7 that I'm using with metro PCS, but it's not letting me update the profile and because of that I'm not getting the wifi hotspot option. How do I get it to work?
@ThaDunder : You must initially do it manually over samsung smart switch then OTA will work @zirnitra : Sadly wifi tethering is not working for me either...no idea how to fix it =/ must be a symptom of the unlocking like wifi calling

I don't recall anyone getting an Amazon update. Sadly you did answer a question I'm sure all the Amazon G4 owners had.
I have the same experience - can we use the same process as before, or use the just posted factory image?
Was you rooted with unlocked bootloader? It just appeared for me as well. I want to update but don't want to relock bootloader but I do still have the original code from moto to unlock it I think.

If you're rooted you can't install an OTA but it doesn't matter if you're unlocked. Once you've used the unlock code from MOTO you're always unlocked and won't have to enter it again. If for some way they've managed to relock it on the Amazon ad phones then I would imagine they've also blocked it from a future unlock. In the past though once unlocked the bootloader is always unlocked.
I'm not locked to any specific carrier as far as I know.. purchased this off of Amazon for $125.. USA version.

I am unable to boot into bootloader on ATT model :/
Lol as expected from Sprint and AT&T. Dont get me wrong, i wish they had bootloader unlocked because the more bootloaders unlocked for different carriers, the more chances to duplicate the amount of developments/roma/mosa/kernels etc.... Now, having only Tmobile as the only one with unlocked bootloader, well, devs who use carrier such as AT&T and Sprint might get further away from developments on LG V20. (I'm a LG V20 Tmobile variant owner)
im not to familiar with LG, but the correct way is to power off the device, hold volume down, insert USB cable?
one would think even if locked, it could still enter the bootloader. adb works, and when i reboot recovery, i get to recovery, but when selecting reboot bootloader, the device starts. interestingly enough, it will enter in adb sideload mode
With Google obviously not wanting unlocked handsets or rooted handsets to be common... This kind of thing is going to be the norm. Best to adapt, in the long term. The days of modding are being ended by Google

Root for Verizon?

I just got this phone (coming from an unlocked rooted VZW S5) and I'm pretty bummed out not seeing any root guides for this specific version (I know Verizon rooting is spotty). Can someone point me in the right direction?
