I recommend renovate ice with the notorious kernel, it has always been smooth and battery life is great.

I HIGHLY recommend the Note 8 port "IronMan-Rom 7.1.1".
https://forum.grifodev.ch/thread/139-rom-stable-n-7-1-1-aqia-13-11-17-sm-n950f-fd-n-ironman-rom/
The performance, for me, is noticeably faster and the battery life is great! Yesterday on it's first cycle I achieved over 6 hours screen on time and as for today had over 2 hours screen time (general web browsing, bit of Youtube, downloading apps from Play Store etc) and still got 70% left.
Very happy!

Thanks mate, I'll give it a try, just downloaded.
I'm coming from Oreo beta - I don't recommend it. Magisk doesn't work, kernel is not battery friendly, % is dropping from 100 to 80 in no time..... also lags here and there, not everything is working as it should. Yeah beta definitely, there's room for improvement.

Nice - thanks for the heads-up!
I was tempted by the Beta, but then I knew I'd miss the little features that I'm used to (like long press back button to kill etc.0) not to mention the stability factor. But I was itching for a change in rom. I was on Batman rom for a while and then I saw the Ironman rom Note 8 port and I haven't looked back! Everything, for me, works flawlessly - got Substratum theme, using the kernel that is provided and honestly I would say this is the best possible rom available for the S8 (I was even getting tempted to jump ship to the Pixel 2 XL...) but I feel very settled once again
Let me know how you find it!

After few days of testing all I can say is AWESOME. Stable, smooth, battery friendly. And tons of customizations. It reminds me of good times on Lollipop when Xposed was working and I was using Wanam app to change everything...
One thing is driving me crazy though. Substratum! It's not working properly. I have the Sungstratum paid add-on and SwiftDark theme (I have paid for that too!). It shows that all themes applied successfully, but after reboot nothing is changed (sometimes notification bar and settings are themes, but not always). What theme are you using?

Haha yeah I remember those days!
I also had an issue with substratum but since resolved it...
When you open substratum and then it's settings, do you see sungstratum listed there (like in my attached picture)?
My issue was I was using Titanium backup to restore it and substratum, but fully uninstalling them both (and the Swift Black theme) and clean installing them from the play store again, and rebooting, made it all work

I just bought Swift Black theme from play store. Uninstalled everything: substratum, add-on and themes. Rebooted. Installed everything again: substratum, add-on and black theme. Granted all permissions for substratum (I'm using Magisk). Applied theme. Restarted UI only and voila it worked for every app including dialer, contacts and gmail. Then rebooted. And dialer, contacts and gmail is all white again...
Ugh. I think I'm gonna liaise with substratum support but I don't think they would help as they already mentioned that on Samsung it CAN work (but that not mean it would).

Perhaps yeah post on the substratum thread regarding the layers not sticking. I do remember having that issue but doing those steps resolved it.

Hey, I'm not too sure if that's possible given you've got a snapdragon, but I'd certainly ask to find out for sure in their thread here:

I use the Soldier ROM with NOX kernel. I don't know if is the best, but is better than the stock ROM.

Old thread but I am finally looking to root my S8 as it's getting really slow and battery is pretty ****ty. Thinking a lite rom combined with an optimised kernal is the way to go, problem is there is so many and I couldn't find this covered anywhere.

The phone is fine with Stock Pie and NX 29 kernel.
I won't back to custom roms. I used renovate ice, hades and Alexis roms, but all these 3 have awful photo quality.
Photos mean to be viewed even after 50 years, so they must be good.

That's why I prefer stock rom. Camera is such a great piece o hardware. Cheers

Point is that its a pain to sort through all pages and links, and a bit confusing to find the latest build/ least bugs/ patches etc. IMO I think OP should update his first post accordingly.
yeah, I think it's much better to open a thread for each ROM. It's a huge mess and often you don't know to what ROM the comments refer to.
btw, is this rom multi-language?
And what does "quite stable" mean?
I recommend flashing this rom. It's way more solid than the miui dev roms.
+1 for having a new, separate thread to discuss this rom specifically. Not sure why that guy is complaining.

Last, 7.12, global stable rom is solid like a rock, running it for 3rd day. Xposed works as well, only modded , not usual one. So double check before writing.

Looks like it is Multi-Language.
All these custom Roms are pretty similar. Made by Chinese Dev "bule" with camera fix by Russian "nofearnohappy" from 4pda.
The miui rom keep disconnect and reconnect me when im on wifi and its really annoying cuz im playing online game so yeah custom rom for me

What about the mic issues? In MIUI it was the case when recording suddenly switched to the noise-cancellation mic and it causes a lot of troubles during the call.

Spurious processes running in the background.
What is system server running in the background, there seems to be a few extra processes running not in the official cm12.1 i was running on my s5 before i bought the note 2
Idk, u can try removing them with titanium backup
Wow glad I finally decided to check back to see some more roms for this phone. I had been using one of the first aosp roms for this phone without vibrate. While it was working fine, I did miss the vibrate function. Checked back and saw this one and it looked pretty damn good. Installed it with no issues at all and so far it is working perfectly.
Can't connect to web with data connection. Only WiFi.
I'm kind of surprised this thread did not get any bigger. Seems a lot of people have overlooked a really good rom. I've been using this rom for 6 months now and I still have 0 problems with it. Don't know how much longer this phone is going to last but it's still chuggin along. Did have to finally replace the battery as it developed a bulge in it (got this phone when it first came out so it's been while). Other than that I'm good. This rom is solid.

MM Android 6.0.1 Ho do you find with the new hydrogen ROM?

Do you find any bugs or improvement?
I've never installed any hydrogen ROM (always oxygen) but i'm curious to know if MM is more fluid than LP.
Does doze works?

Well, I've tested it. I can say that the Fingerprint is a huge improvement compare to OxygenOS' one. For the rest of the ROM, it seems to be pretty solid and smooth. I don't tested it more than 20 minutes (really don't like HydrogenOS..), but yeah, it seems to be a good improvement compare to OxygenOS in general. But I've had some troubles going back to OxygenOS, so if you want to test it out by yourself, be sure TO BACKUP EVERYTHING important into your PC (or out your phone).
But yeah, I hope OxygenOS will be as fast and stable as HydrogenOS is.

Here's hoping. I just can't get used to H2OS any time I've tried it. I guess I'd still rather use something closer to stock Android, even if it doesn't perform as well!
But if you change hidrogen launcher (with nova or GEL) doesn't seems like a vanilla ROM? Are there other changes from Oxygen over the quick settings and the launcher?
p.s. is only in english and chinese?

yes, only 2 language
the difference are in, launcher, notification, quick setting, different swipe (left for close app o erase notification, right for open notification or lock app, so you can't kill it in multitasking)
I've been running it for a couple of days. First thing I did was to remove some of the Chinese stuff. Second was to change the launcher.
There are fewer options for customization, probably because MM is new to the opt, and that its beta software.
The thing I miss is the automatic activation of do not disturb from the cm builds, not a deal breaker. There's no dark theme, but layers manager seems to do the trick.
It's fast, FP works better than any lollipop rom I've tried and at par or better with the FP on iPhone.
The only problem I e noticed with camera is occasionally it's slow to respond, possible due to doze, also the audio level seems to vary when recording video.
I didn't notice smart lock, but my email server prevents me from using it anyways.
The sound quality from the speaker seems clearer.
I've always had poor battery life battery is much improved, and it got better when I removed Facebook, this is subjective as I haven't tested it out much.
Some of the settings are hard to find, but it a learning curve.
Wifi will drop when doing a soft reboot, for theme changes, and it won't reboot into recovery with flashify, or reboot at all with xposed, again no big deal. Cycling wifi on/off in control panel brings it back I've occasionally lost the 4G/3G indicator, but data is still active, again cycling data on/off brings it back.
A few xposed modules won't work with mm, but that's kind of DUH, they aren't updated. I'm impatient for "alert slider" to get an update, as the flashlight on is very useful to me. I haven't installed many modules as they all are for lollipop. YouTube background playback works.
LTE seems to work, but it says 4G, I can use either sim and get LTE, something I missed on any other MM rom.
I did lose my twrp, but I flashed it over adb, and it now working with power and vol+
I installed kingmericans hos today. Like everyone has noticed FP is blazing fast. Rest is more or less the same as LP hos. A few lags here and there but it's definitely way better than OOS. Even I CNT get used to hos. I revert back to vanilla android eventually but I'm glad at least one plus got one of their ROMs to be nice.
I found it fast and stable. Great job, I was happy in lollipop, now I'm 10x times happier with this device even we don't have custom kernels yet. (Of course nobody will work in a kernel for a leaked beta)

Using Kingmercians Hydrogen OS and with Google Now Launcher it is really quite amazing. Sure, it isn't as good as Oxygen, but it is Marshmallow and that alone makes it worth it. You can customize Hydrogen OS to be perfectly OK and while Oxygen is indeed preferred I'd rather use this until Oxygen comes out and then just install Oxygen, it's not like it is hard to switch ROM's.
Well it's butter. Can't stand OOS after this. Xposed works so customization galore. Of course battery is much better. Heck even Viper works. Finally OP2 works.
H²OS MM <3
Hey !
I just give my personal opinion.
I find this first beta v1.0.2 & TWRP 3.0.0 by Kingmercians incredibly robust and fluid.
The FP sensor is a marvel and is faster than the iPhone 6 Plus ! ;p
In addition it consumes nothing with Servicely ! And the best part about it is that the power save mode is 100% lag free !
I tried to return the phone in all directions, with Xposed v80 where I encountered some problems with Gravity Box...
Especially the percentage of battery level that does not stop to make small jumps. If I put the default settings in Gravity Box and puts the battery percentage from the system menu, it disappears in seconds...
(So I deleted Gravity Box and everything is back to normal when you reboot.)
If not except it Locale More works very well too. (For me it's in French !)
One last thing if I had the choice the first time I used the Oneplus 2 to change the preinstalled ROM (OOS), I would do it again when we see H²OS is its superb IOS like interface.
At any point of view I prefer H²OS.
Do not forget this is a beta, some bug not very important, works better than OxygenOS 2.2.0, there is no doubt.
Peace.

How do I make my Moto X Play lagg free?

Hi Guys,
I'm using the original stock rom but rooted it and now I have installed xposed, gravity etc. I also have approx 100+ apps ( including games ) in my phone installed at the moment. 3 Google accounts for Clash of Clans. I also have layers installed and using blue theme. I've also got games like Asphalt 8, deer hunter, dead trigger 2 like some big games maybe and it works flawlessly.
I've been using the same ROM from approx 1-2 months now and didn't change anything. It works fine but from few days, it started lagging, slow. I dnt know the issue and i seriously need a little help.
In my previous thread, i did not get any response so i am giving some more details.
Any suggestions please?
For some reason people just don't want to talk on this topic..
Well not 100% lag free but the best for me has been resurrection remix rom with squid kernel
Do remember u will be trading a lot of battery life for that performance boost
your requirements scream high end specs which the x play doesn't offer. ironically, the x 'play' is not really a phone for playing heavy games. 2gb ram and sd615 is mid-range at its best.

There's nothing like LOL in that. If you knew what you are doing with your phone you wouldn't have to make a thread for making you device lag free.
Since the time moto has updated the OS to latest, there have been just battery life problems not a single lag problem as I keep a close eye on the forum sharing whatever I know.
You have installed 100+ apps, sync 3 Google accounts for a game and have such large amount of games. Your internal memory has most probably filled up by now and showing signs of lags and that's normal. I am sure you won't have cleared the cache also. Although layers are not responsible for lag until it's a heavy layer theme having custom background.
Reading about android and other problems can tell you these basic things for which a separate wouldn't be needed.
You need more performance, then move to a custom rom at the sake of battery life.
You need balance, then use stock rom.
You need more battery life but want to remain on stock, use custom kernel

Yes I am using RR rom. Its the best keeping in mind the customisation and performance.
All custom Roms have same battery life.

I had the wifi getting off on screen turning off because of dirty flashing.
Make sure you clean flashed and don't reboot in between flashing rom and Gapps.
I don't have any such problem till now.

Have you also tried a startup manager to disable unwanted apps to load in memory at startup. This can really make a difference between smooth and laggy experience with 65 apps installed and pre-loaded in your memory.

Good idea! I had it installed in my xperia z but then removed it and i forgot what name it was..i tried to search on playstore, but couldn't find one that i was looking or had on my xperia previously! there are many other startup managers! i am not sure what to use!

@K.khiladi has given you some good advice!
I don't use RR myself (I have in the past but currently on Marshmallux) so this might not be applicable but if you have "Running Services" option in "Developer Tools" you should check in there and see if there's things running that you wouldn't expect. I've found some games to continue running in the background weeks after last playing them because they set themselves up to run on startup (where @Sickaxis79 's advice will now help you).
Anyways, just a thought. Also, I've found that I can't rely on too much shortly after a flash, I feel like it takes a few days/reboots before things seem to settle down.

[Q] New Samsung Note 4 owner, things I should know?

HI all.
I'm a new Samsung Galaxy Note 4 owner! Recently upgraded from a Note 3. Phones are years old but are decently priced and still good phones when you're not looking for something too fancy.
Honestly, the Note 3 was the best phone I've ever had and was looking forward to a Note 4 upgrade (was looking forward to the fingerprint scanner, even if not the best, and to the metal edges)
Now, I'd just like to ask for a few pointers on this device. Any custom ROM suggestions? Anything I should know about?
I am doing my fair share of research, I've been reading a lot of posts regarding this device, posts that are months old, posts that are years old and I've gotten myself a general idea of what to expect.
But I think even with all this reading, I probably won't be able to compare what I learn from these posts to someone that has owned a Note 4 for months, possibly years! Which is why I'm posting this thread, to ask those who have had this device for a longer time and will probably continue to use it for a longer time since this phone is amazing!
I just want to ask you Note 4 owners, if you bought a brand new Note 4, what set-up will you prefer? Custom ROM? Stock ROM? Any kernels you would flash?
I know the best ROM will always be stock ROM, but is there any worth-while N7 ports for the Note 4? I'm a big fan of the off-screen memo, the smart screen capture (scroll and screen-recording that records gifs) and also enjoy tweaking the kernel (overclock) for smoother game performance. I've also read that the most common problem with ports is the fingerprint scanner. I'll probably end up doing the work-around since no custom ROM has gotten this fixed (from what I read it's almost impossible without leaving a lot of the stock ROM's assets which defeat the point of a custom ROM).
Currently, I am downloading stock EQI2 6.0.1 which is the latest firmware for the N910T variant. I know that the T-Mobile variant has it's own forum but I usually see that the "Samsung Galaxy Note 4" thread is the most active and sometimes includes things for the T-Mobile variant (was the same case with the Note 3, the T-Mobile forum was dead and the international forum was alive and well)
It's running 5.0.1 software right now, hopefully 6.0.1 is better.
Thank you for your time!
I kindly invite you to try the unified trlte build linked in the [ROM] [UNOFFICIAL] [7.1.2] LineageOS 14.1 [SM-N910F/G/P/R4/T/T3/V/W8] thread.

Thanks for your input, I am currently trying out a Note 7 ROM port, but if it doesn't work out I will try it out
Personally, I prefer to run the stock OS that comes pre-installed on my device and update the OS to the latest version provided by the manufacturer. As I know for a fact that Custom 3rd Party OSs do not have the best post imaging software. Which hinders the performance of the camera sensor on your device.

Been snooping around and messing with a couple of custom ROM's either with Note 7/8 features and S7 Edge/S8.
I really like the look overall to the stock Note 4 UI, but I seem to have a very bad luck with random reboots and some features missing (fingerprint) or not working (night clock).
I was really afraid my phone was doomed with the eMMC failure I keep reading about that plagued the Note 4, but I don't have any problems running stock.
Yup, I guess my motto came true. "The best ROM is always STOCK ROM", even if it looks a bit out-dated.
I'm currently running stock and a custom kernel I found for stock MM. I'm pleased with the results so far, just kind of wish I could boot straight in to camera with double HOME press
Best advice I can give you , owning the phone for 2,5 years, is to never use quick charge and never update the phone or flash custom roms while the phone is being charged.

I am amazed you are not aware of the motherboard brick problem of the note 4 !
Do a quick search and read about the motherboard Emmc problem on a lot of Note 4s.

I did read about it, I just wasn't sure what was the root cause for it. So I guess fast charge is the culprit? Every place I read this people seemed to blame an update either from KK to LL, or from LL to MM. Wow... I gotta think about this one. One of the reasons I love this phone over my Note 3 is because of the quick charge. Man :/
Gotta think about trading that feature in for... you know... a FUNCTIONAL PHONE

IMO the culprit was a heavy update(eg. from lollipop to Marshmallow) being installed , while the phone was pluged in being quickcharged.
This pushed the temperatures to exceed the max threshold of a bad emmc solder on the motherboard on some specific batches of the note 4.

So you think regular quick charge should be fine? The phone doesn't heat up with regular quick charge, so I really hope it's safe. I know that just to be safe, I shouldn't use quick charge. But I guess I'll roll the dice.
I updated from LL to MM via Odin, so it wasn't quick charging :victory:

In my case , my phone gets really warm while being quickcharged even if I am not using it at all.
I live in a warm place though!
If you want to use quickcharge , I suggest you go ahead and use it but without using the phone during the charge.

I have an exynos version so can't tell you much about the snapdragon versions (also never heard of emmc problems on exynos devices, the only problem I have is IR blaster stopped working some update ago and never worked again since), but here's little general advice :
Stock ROM is perfectly reliable and very smooth with little customization :
I recommend a package disabler app like EZ disabler to get rid of bloat. I disable anything that doesn't have a clear use for me . If something breaks functionality I enable it back.
If you don't want to root you can use adhel to block ads in very efficient way .
If you do want to root I recommend magisk . It's the best way to do it because if anything goes wrong you can just uninstall it and everything is fine again , it doesn't affect system partition.
Also system less xposed works great if you use the proper version . I love youtube background mod.
In my experience you should never use apps that claim to save battery like amplify/greenify etc . (In some cases they drain the battery even faster with their continuous background services) The better way to save power is to not install power hungry apps in the first place or disable them with EZ disabler . Also disable animations and just disable functions when you don't use them : Sync/Location /Bluetooth etc .
Last but not least : download and use Samsung game booster : it's amazing for our old gpus : you can lower resolution/frame rates to make games more playable and battery last longer .
These were my quick tips . Hope you enjoy your new phone !

The only small problem I have with stock is that it looks outdated. I know visuals are the least you should look for in a ROM, should be more worried about stability and battery life, but I simply can't deny that visually, stock TW UI bothers me.
But I guess I'll have to get used to it anyway since all the ROMs I've tried have issues here and there, but most importantly I get random shut downs and reboots with most custom ROMs and I lose the fingerprint scanner.
As for games, I heavily play a game called Shadowgun Deadzone. It's not that graphics heavy, but I need it to run smooth. I haven't tried Samsung's game booster, I've only messed around with custom kernels and changing the CPU governor, overclocking, etc... and it runs fine for a little while, but starts chugging after a few minutes in.
If the game booster can fix this, heck I can stick with stock ROM without any problems.
When you say it looks outdated
Are you talking about the launcher?
If so why not try the many other launchers out there? Like nova launcher..

A launcher can only do so much. I'm referring to mostly on things like the notification drawer, the settings and stuff like that.

[Discussion] Favourite rom/kernel and why?

Hi all, thought I'd start this discussion (following a success of such thread I started for the OnePlus 5T) just for a place to talk about what rom we're all running at present, for what reasons etc. to offer an overview of what choices are available for our great device. Having this one thread for an ongoing discussion will prove handy for us all to keep up to date.
I've just purchased a Pixel 2 XL which will arrive in a couple of days and I'll be selling my OnePlus 5T. As much as I love it, I really wanted to have the stereo speakers, water resistance, great camera and fast updates.
So indeed, what roms/kernels do people suggest? I'm thinking Nitrogen OS will be my first rom...
I alternate between stock and DU atm. After the March security update, I'm going to try Nitrogen. It was my favorite rom on my 6p, and Nittin, the maintainer, is very good at fixing bugs and offering support. As far as kernels go, it's tough to beat Flash. He updates that kernel shortly after upstream changes are posted. Having said that, Snoke and Ex are also very good if you want to stay close to the stock Google kernel. And that's my 2 pennies worth ??

Yeah not taking anything away from Current ROMs, it's just that the stock ROM with just the right ingredients suites me better :good:
Yes there is a Magisk mod to customise the squeeze, haven't used personally yet though.
I really don't like having Xposed but chose to install for Flat Style Bar Indicators
Flash Kernel .....Just Sublime
Substratum to. change the nav keys
Then just a few Magisk mods as below

Yeah that could be how I end up to be honest! Am I right in thinking that Nitrogen OS is essentially a stock rom but modded? As so opposed to Lineage based or anything like that?
What I most want from a rom:
- stock camera quality/performance
- be able to swap recents/back button
- long press actions (eg back for kill, recents to last app, home button launch torch)
I'm not too bothered about many other mods

How to u alternate du and go back to stock, Everytime I flash du and go back to stock it using script to flash stock to both slots I lost my data because it ask me to factory reset all the time
AquariOS has been my DD going on a month now. Solid and has most everything you would need. Great ROM??
I think i agree with the most of pixel users,
Stock with a personal ingredients on top, that always work best,
My current setup is
• Feb Stock
• Flash Kernel/Kirisakura (am juggling between version)
• xPosed for Instant Face Unlock, Flat Style Status Bar, SudoHide (stop that app update notif in playstore, hide the app from it), and Exposed Edge
• using screen gesture & fingerprint scanner gesture control to do everything (back, home, recent, app cycling, shortcut, you name it). There goes the annoying on screen nav bar. And here come the fully immersive screen, all the time !
• Viper4FX + Dolby Atmos through Magisk
• Nova launcher with icon pack & google companion
• Substratum
• Adblock + WireGuard
• iYTBP - Just like how YouTube supposed to be. Background playback with no Ads.

Simple. My stock rom is on slot A, and my DU is on slot B. When I want to switch, I go into twrp, change to the slot I want to be active, then do a twrp factory reset, then restore my backup and that's pretty much it. I've probably done that half a dozen times in the last month ??

I've been loving nitrogen and flashk. Has been running great since day one. Even with... Xposed installed. Lol. If i need my squeeze fix i go to stock for a bit ?. Never thought squeezie phone would be useful. Ive ran du and AquariOs also. There all great roms, very happy to have as much development as there is for the xl2. As far as kernels ive really only used flash. But all of the a available ones are from great devs and worth trying.
Ever since my first Android device (Nexus 6P), I've mainly run PureNexus. Got a Pixel XL and had PN on that too. Switched to the OnePlus 5 and had PureFusion on that as it was basically PureNexus for the OnePlus 5. Got the 5T and it kind of felt like a downgrade. Vibration motor felt "loose" or weak to me, and initially there was not much development for it, including the lack of PureFusion. Development kicked in eventually but I just wanted to come back to Google at that point.
Found someone to trade my 5T with, and now I'm the happy owner of a 2 XL My setup is:
Stock Feb update
Magisk 16.0
Xposed for Oreo
Using GravityBox to fill in the empty spaces stock leaves. I've always used custom ROMs in the past and this is my first time being happy with stock, and that is mainly because of the customization GravityBox offers!
As for kernels, I use flash because he was super helpful back in the 6P days, and is an awesome developer in general, so I want to support him! Also, he updates so frequently and I'm a total flashaholic (no pun intended:laugh so it's a win-win.
Whenever PureNexus drops, I'll definitely making the switch over, and I may play around with DU if I get some spare time to do so; seems like everyone is really loving that ROM as well
Sorry for the long post/unnecessary backstory of the devices I own, just thought I may as well include that bit in
