How can I update stock and rooted XT1602 with may patch to latest 1 september one? - Moto G4 Play Questions & Answers

I have a rooted XT1602 with TWRP permanent with may security patch
Today I got notification about 1 September security patch, as it fixes many vulnerabilities, I want to upgrade to this patch. Should I just update using OTA or is there another way?

Well if you haven'tplayed with stock stuff, then go ahead or just take nandroid backup for safety and update it!

Thanks for the reply. I am worried about it getting bricked or losing IMEI number.
Are we sure nothing of that sort will happen? What is the worst that can happen?

it's there a way to just apply monthly security update?

Hi all. I'm on a custom stock 6.0.1 ROM. It's working really well since I installed it and I'm pretty satisfied with that but since then I dint installed any monthly security updates so I'm stuck on a May patch.
I know it's there an October update and was thinking if it's there a way to just install the security patch WITHOUT installing all the whole ROM. You know, if something is working just don't touch it.
And btw, developer of my ROM sold his device and there aren't more updates to his room. The one rocking my phone is the last one.
Someone can point me out. Thank you

As far as i know there is no way to install ota or security patch updates unless you unroot your device with stock recovery. Even if you find ota zip file for security patch update you cannot flash via custom recovery your binaries bust be official to apply this patch.
Yep no way as far as I know. I flashed back stock recovery, unrooted, still OTA wasn't applied from Stock recovery, forgotten the error code.

New stock firmware available (24.221.8)

Hi all.
I just noticed there's new firmware. Has anyone updated yet? In using an XT1572.
I'm rooted etc... So I can't quite simply update.
Should I be flashing the last stock firmware i have and then update? The last fastboot I have is the February patch, but my phone is on the May patch. Whatever firmware i flashed gives me another language in the update notification screen...lol.
Any guidance would be appreciated. Otherwise, I'll just do my thing blindly.

After your post, I rechecked the update service on my phone (xt1572 also). I got also new update here, but right now I cant do update (rooted + xposed). WIll try later, but I suppose that there is just new security patch. Strange that I got another version..
EDIT:
fount out Motowebpage
it look like the only improvements are - September security patch there.
Is the update for India dual sim xt1572?
I've installed the update today. The download size was about 40 MB, so seems to be a small patch indeed. I can confirm that it contains the september security patch, haven't noticed anything else yet.
I do think it's a shame that Moto is lacking so much in the update department lately. This is a security patch of two months ago... Also I would have expected them to have news on Nougat by now, at least for their Moto Z family...
6.0.1 ? at the time of 7.0?

it's not 6.0.1 update it's only security patch, we already had 6.0.1 in eu for a while
Has someone already tried the update with Flashfire? Im Rooted, on Frankenclark and Xposed. Does anyone know if we can get a flashable zip to flash in TWRP? To much work to go back to Stock, update and install everything again. Is the patch it worth?
Sent from my XT1572 using XDA-Developers mobile app
can someone upload full firmware for retasia? thx
We have to wait for Moto to release/leak the firmware image, the OTA zip won't do any good... This usually takes 2-4 weeks, sometimes more, to get the factory image. Be patient.
BTW, it is nothing special, all it does is patch to the Sept 1, 2016, security update, including Dirty Cow (which if you have been following the security threads is pretty much worthless on Lollipop and newer devices anyway)

Has anyone received this update? My wife just got it tonight, and she INSTANTLY accepted it. I can't find a single reference to it and I'm a little nervous about the nature of it. Can anyone confirm that this is a legitimate version of the software?
Received last night, everything works as usual, security patch level March 1st
Also Received
I also received however, mine has Android security patch level 2/1/2017. Just letting you know your wife's not alone in getting the patch.
Its April and there sending out a February Security Patch, epic fail. LMAO LG
just keep in mind that this DOES patch dirtycow so no root will be possible.
Possible to revert to original?
Even though this blocks rooting, would it be possible to revert to an older update that is still rootable?

No because there is no KDZ for an older version.

Is there a way to downgrade from 7.0 (feb update) to 6.0.1?

Please someone help

Should be no problem, as long as you DON'T flash "GPT.BIN" and "BOOTLOADER.IMG". Just remove them from the common flash batch file.
But why would you want to go back to Marshmallow? Nougat battery backup for example isn't worth compared to Marshmallow and you
would have June or July (can't remember) 2017 security patch, which isn't a good idea at all.
And the most important: You can't use any OTA updates after flashing Marshmallow, it would brick your device!

Won't detect OTA updates

I recently restored my Moto g4 plus to completely stock. The battery is much better now but it doesn't detect the latest update. It is on version NPJ25.93-14 and it has received update notifications on the past but I couldn't update due to TWRP recovery being flashed. Now its completely stock but I don't get the update even when I check manually.
What software channel is your device on and do you have a SIM card inserted into the device? Sometimes, updates won't be delivered until the OTA servers know what mobile network you're on (presumably to check if you need a carrier update).
However, be aware that NPJ25.93-14 is a pretty old firmware (Dec 2016 security patch), so if your stock firmware was ever on a newer patch, I'd be very careful about using OTA updates - having a newer bootloader from a newer firmware and old stock system is a mismatch that could hard brick your device if you use OTA updates.
If you wish to update, and you're running a EU/UK/Brazil/Indian device, you might wish to look at flashing the latest April 2018 security NPJS25.93-14-18 https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g4-plus/how-to/stock-rom-npjs25-93-14-4-march-1-t3608138 It's running well on my XT1642.

The sim card thing did it! Didn't have the sim in it because it's not my primary phone anymore. Thanks for the help!
