November Security Update - Google Pixel 2 Guides, News, & Discussion

Just noticed this article on Droid Life: https://www.droid-life.com/2017/11/...-update-goes-live-factory-images-nexus-pixel/
I'm recently back to using Nexus/Pixel, how long does it usually take for Google to push updates once they're posted?

It varies widely from a day to over a week. If you're in a hurry like I am, just install the OTA from https://developers.google.com/android/ota#walleye. Pretty easy to do with instructions at the top.

Will the Nov security patch be pushed to those of us on 8.1 beta?

Not as a monthly update, but as part of DP2 at the end of November / beginning of December.

SImple to sideload the OTA update. Took all of 5 minutes!

Does sideloading the OTA update potentially wipe user data the way sideloading a factory image can?

I went to apply the update and now I have the "can't load android system". Can't seem to get around it. Is my only option to factory reset?
Edit: I just factory reset it. This is disappointing, haven't rooted or done anything like that and I get this problem.

No, Sideloading the ota wont wipe your user data like the system image.

I tried to apply the November patch manually using the instructions on the above linked Google page and when I try to boot into recovery I get the Android guy laying on his side with a red exclamation point along with the text No Command. I also tried booting into Fastboot mode and then going into Recovery but got the same thing. Has anyone ran into this? I did some Google-ing and it did not yield any solution. Thanks.

You are half way there when you see the Android hit power button first and hold it then push volume up and release this gets you into recovery. From there you can sidelined the Ota update with adb.

Any thoughts on why we didn't get a Nov 6 level patch to cover the KRACK vulnerability?

Still no OTA push here... Despite several time a day force checking for updates

The OTA files are 1+GB? That seems huge for an update. Is that right?

You mean from Googles download page? Those are full update files, they contain the full files/img of anything that is modified.
The OTA's are much smaller.

[Q] OTA update keeps failing to download

My wife got me a brand new A500 off ebay a couple of months ago for a Christmas gift(for me it's only three days old). So far I love it but it will not take the OTA update that it keeps bugging me about. The download starts fine but then stalls out mid download. I looked here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113878 but did not see my current version there. Can anyone point me in the direction of the OTA I need to download and flash with recovery? My build is Acer_a500_1.145.09_com_gen1 I'm running 3.0.1. It looks like it's trying to download 4.010.11.
Further info:
According to the log the file name is Acer_A500_1.145.09_4.010.11_com_gen1_1311243587838_bd1ab95c.zip
I can't find that file anywhere on the net.
The reason I would suspect is because someone replaced the stock recovery? Off eBay you say, was it brand new and never used? It sounds like it was used or someone tampered with it?
If that's not the case, then you can just install the update manually. Download the update you want and put it on your external SDCard and then enter recovery (using power and volume). The recovery will install the update for you.

It said it was brand new. My wife would not buy something like this used. The weird thing is it knows it has an update and it starts to download and get's up to half way downloaded and then it just stops. It shows that it still is pulling data but the downloaded file size doesn't increase anymore after it stalls.
Ive been looking into rooting it and since I'm on 3.0.1 it appears Gingerbreak is all I need. The next question is what rom should I get and how do I go about installing it? I've never rooted droid before and most instructions on XDA are written for the experienced level and not the new guy. I'd like to stay fairly stock but rooted.

Just to make sure I'm getting it right: I go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20680452 download that to my PC and follow the instructions contained within and I end up with a stock rooted 3.2.1? I don't need to download anything else right? A soft reset for this tab is pusing the little red button on the end by the USB port?

Yes, if you want to flash 3.2.1 stock with root read the instructions in the download. The download has everything in it.
The soft reset everyone talks about is using the paperclip in that little hole next to the USB port.

Received OTA here (Netherlands) and all went fine.
Just no root anymore but all went well.

I think the stock Shield Tablet recovery even lets you flash rom the internal storage or sdcard. Just need to remember that when you get into recovery, you have to hit the power and volume keys to get the menu options to show up.

5.0.2 - Experience and Discussion

Thought it would be good to have a thread dedicated to 5.0.2, instead of sifting through the 5.1.x Rolling Out and Stock OTA threads.
Got the prompt and updated this morning. Took about 10 minutes -- 3-4 minutes to install the updat and then a good 6-7 to go through app optimization (for 120+ apps).
Haven't had a chance to put it through its paces yet, but interested in what others experiences are. Improvement? Same old?

Screen flicker possibly gone? Was pretty bad before on mine, haven't had it since update now.
This will sound dumb probably: I am stock rooted with TWRP recovery. My N9 has a notification that update to 5.0.2 is available. As far as I know from reading guides and tutorials, I can't accept the OTA right? I have to manualy flash factory image? But how am I about to do that if the factory image for Wifi N9 5.0.2 isn't even available?
Thanks in advance.

You basically have two choices:
1) Flash the stock 5.0.1 system.img (this will install stock recovery) and boot.img, then vendor. Img then take the OTA.
2) Wait until Google posts the factory image.
Actually, you will need to flash three things from the LXR22C 5.0.1 factory zip ...
system.img
vendor.img
boot.img
and if you have TWRP, then also recovery.img
once all these are stock, then you can take the OTA.
After the OTA, you can either reflash TWRP, or just simply fastboot boot it, then apply the latest SuperSU zip from chainfire's web site, and you'll be back to stock and rooted.
Can't say i've seen much of a difference
then again the update was only 23MB. What Google are thinking atm I'd love to know.
Ive tried the ota 3 times now and every time it 'errors' in recovery while flashing, I'm flabber gasted this is how Google now treats its nexus customers.
Ok I'm going to update my vendor
if any one wants it just tell me
Something else ... if you attempt the OTA once, you're done ... you can't re-attempt it unless you reflash back to original 5.0.1 stock.
It checks System first, and updates it ...
Then it checks Vendor, and updates it ...
Then it checks the boot image, and updates it.
So you you fail the vendor test, it's already updated System, and it won't run again.
You have to reflash system.img, vendor.img, AND boot.img before you can try again.
A much smarter method would have put the three verification steps one after the other, but obviously Google did not write the script that way.

I think it's just some bug fixes. This is the only Nexus not moved to 5.1.1 by now, it's also the only Nexus using the K1 chipset. Not sure if the two are related, but it seems reasonable that they are running into some nVidia issues. 5.1.1 isn't out for the Shield tablet either.

I appreciate this. Coming from Nexus 6, vendor.img doesn't exist.
And on Nexus 6 when flashing the stock system.img it checks recovery and if not stock will automatically flash recovery.img. Is Nexus 9 the same?
When will my Nexus 9 LTE Model get this?

Ok so I got my ota update and downloaded it. Now my Nexus 9 keeps trying to come on,then saying android updating apps, then shutting off and restarting , and then repeats the same thing ! I never rooted or flashed anything ! Its completely stock ! WTH ! Help !!!!!!!
Update showed up when I turned mine on, ended up bricking my device.
Would show the spinning balls and nothing else, tried wiping cache, factory reset and still ended up at the spinning balls. Google sent me a new one, but I really wish I could just return the stupid thing.
I'll never buy another "premium" Nexus tablet again, the only way I buy another is if they give us another Nexus 7 like device.
I'm doing a factory reset .It seems it still on android deleting screen for 10 min already. Is it frozen ??

Moto G4 XT1625 Nougat OTA (crazy?) Error

Hello hello,
First time poster as I don't know crap to help folks since I'm just learning *ahem*, and I've come across an issue that has me completely stumped with a recently purchased refurbished Moto G4...
([Edit/Update]: So apparently new users can't embed links, and so it appears that my Imgur photos are also not posting...?)
TLDR: OTA to Nougat refuses to install on XT1625...because Consumer Celluar?
So here's the long version... Bought a refurbished Moto G4 XT1625 (not amazon) with the intention of using it as a learning aid for unlocking, rooting, etc.
Unlocked the bootloader, flashed TWRP, backed up, rooted via Magisk, backed up. After a couple days, up pops the OTA notification. "Yay" I thought. Then "Oh wait, I heard root + OTA can be difficult". So I read. A lot.
Fast forward and of course the OTA failed when I just accepted it. However, I captured the file, pulled up the stock ROM download from the official Moto website after checking that the build numbers matched, and proceeded to unroot and reflash that stock ROM (except for bootloader and gpt files). I booted back up, got the notification again, and hit OK. Fail. So I booted into recovery and tried to sideload OTA (using "Blur_Version.24.31.65.athene.retail.en.US.zip" pulled from "com.motorola.ccc.ota-20171028-062630.tar.gz"). Fail.
Maybe somehow I misread the multiple how-tos out there, and I'm screwing something up in the process here?
After numerous rinse and repeats of the above steps, I cannot for the life of me get past this damn error which (assuming my inexperienced eyes are reading it properly) seems to say that the current CCMyConsumer.apk on my phone is somehow wrong (corrupted/incorrect/missing?), and so the OTA's response to me is a big FU.
Verifying current system...
E3005: "/oem/app/CCMyConsumer/CCMyConsumer.apk" has unexpected contents.

}
This seems.......weird to me? If I have both the stock ROM and am using the actual OTA, why would a random provider's app be screwed up, much less screwing up the update.
Also, if it matters at all, here's that particular directory tree in a file manager...an apk file doesn't appear to even be there?
Could a lack of existence be the "unexpected contents?"
So, the question as in the TLDR, any ideas on what the cause or solution to this error or overall OTA issue could be? I'm at a loss.
The only other item I noticed is that my "Settings" now crashes if I attempt to navigate into "Apps" within its menu. However, if I navigate directly into an App's info page via the app drawer, I can access those. Not saying this is related, I have no idea, but being the only other oddity, and since it persists through flashes, I figured I'd mention it (even if unrelated, I am still curious what could be going on there too...).
Thanks in advance for any help, education, or peace of mind. =P

Do you still have TWRP installed? You cannot flash an OTA update with TWRP installed. You'll have to find and flash the original Nougat ROM which will remove TWRP. Then accept the OTA update and let it install. Then, if you need TWRP, flash it again. I know because I was in the same boat when I accidentally accepted the OTA update with the Sept security patch and it screwed up my phone (XT1625) royally. Check out this thread which describes my process.

CAPTCHA:
After clean fastboot flashing of this version with flash_all_except_data -> rebooting phone forces to stock recovery and requests factory reset.
Seems like after installing OTA possible behaviours are: either the same request for reset, or bootloop.
Reflashed back V11.0.14.0.QDIMIXM in order to make data backup

So this is yet another botched update to skip, got it.
Thank you, brave ones who are willing to update first.
I'm just too afraid to update this device nowadays.
I had to reset device after last update this is really worst device support I had
For those who have reverted to V11.0.14.0.QDIMIXM, you don't have any bootloop on androidone screen?
My wife did the update, so I reverted to V11.0.14.0.QDIMIXM with flash_all_except_data but for now it still bootloop

same here, now I'll try to flash V11.0.14.0.QDIMIXM and let's see...
*update1*
It worked, I did flash_all_except_data and at first reboot it went to recovery and it showed up the same message saying that data may be corrupt but when I tried to boot it again it worked fine... now I'll backup everything and let's see if it works well at every reboot.

I tried unsuccessfully to reboot, Everytime showed this message, finally I accepted to erase the phone and let download the backup, I lost some downloaded stuff I may download again later.
It's an Shane this happening to Android one devices, suddenly we got from special to second class citizens
I had the same problem, which was solved for me by going into fastboot and issuing a fastboot boot recovery which for some reason returned by phone to a working state with an update failed notification. will skip this one

Hi,
All I did was go into fastboot using the power and volume shortcut, and than I connected the device to my laptop and issued the command:
fastboot reboot recovery
(naturally using the SDK Platform tools)
After that, the phone started working again. Although there is no reasonable reason it should have worked. I was surprised enough so that I decided to take the effort to create an account here and share this for others. But again, maybe it was pure luck, YMMV.
Will be crossing my fingers for you.
I've tried to update and got the "Can't load Android system. Your data may be corrupt" messege. Tried again a few times, until the phone reverted back to the previous version and said it couldn't install the update. No October update for me. =(
