Back cover starting to peel off! - Essential Phone Questions & Answers

My back cover is starting to peel off on the top left, the side where the magnetic connectors are. There's no physical abuse on the phone whatsoever. Anyone seen something like this? Should I try to fix it or just leave it as is? I didn't use any case FYI.

Pic? How are you going to "fix" it? What do you mean by the back cover? The ceramic?

Will try to get a pic. Yes, I mean the ceramic in the back, at present there's a noticeable (1-2mm) gap in that corner between the ceramic and the phone's back part. It does look like it was glued to the back and I wouldn't know how to fix other than using some glue and stick it back!

With pics!!

I just RMA'd mine for this problem. Ceramic was coming apart in the same place too.

I have the same problem but not as bad. Do you think it'll get worse ?

Thank you! Typically what's the response time? I submitted a request on their website.

I really hope having a case on mine will prevent this kind of stuff when my phone comes in...

I would rather get it RMA'ed before they refuse to accept it as their quality issue! Such a nice phone but sad that these minor quality issues are creeping up!

I got the run around for a week, a little over maybe? I am a Sprint customer, so that's a little unique. I think unlocked users have fast turn around, similar to the end of my experience I will explain.
I knew Sprint customers were getting the run around and Essential had commented they're working to make it a better experience, so I waited intentionally before submitting anything. Then Essential announced they'd take RMAs for Sprint customers for the speaker grill problem (fabric they used was deteriorating). So I waited a couple more days and contacted support. They initially said they'd handle the RMA, then followed up saying they were only handling the speaker grill issues, and for Sprint to handle the problem since the ceramic was coming off. I go to Sprint, they tell me to go to Essential or I can buy their insurance and they'll handle it. So I go back to Essential and they made it painless from there on. Said they didn't have Sprint units available at the moment and asked if I could be a little more patient. Last Fri. they told me they were expecting units Mon. Mon rolls around and they have stock and I get a FedEx tracking number. Tues, FedEx indicates to expect delivery Thurs. Also Tues, I get a UPS tracking number. FedEx was Essential direct. UPS was Asurion, which apparently handles their extended warranty plans. Turns out my RMA automatically triggered the Asurion one, even though they were doing it themselves. Asurion arrived Wed, a day before Essential's direct handling. Theirs arrived Thurs. as expected.
Both deliveries included a padded envelope with return shipping sticker on it. And I was assured it would be enough protection for the phone, but I still remain skeptical (they're in the mail now so oh well). I had to send Asurion's back and send my defective one back to Essential directly.
Also, I'd expect the run around I got is history. It should be figured out now.
Oh, and I had Sprint activate my replacement. That was painless, though I used my Google Voice number on a PC to call since my account would be disabled from my old phone and added to the new.

Wow. I just checked in the same spot after your reading your post and mine is loose there too. Will be returning for another one at Best buy tomorrow. This really sucks.

So do you think these are just defective units, or all phones are susceptible to this? Any correlation with older devices/grills and the back plate coming off?

I'd like to know too. I'm a little hesitant about getting another one.

I'll put this to the Essential rep when I get a response. Let's see what they have to say?
They're most likely following some of these threads, hope it won't be a templated response.
Also, I never thought I'd miss an instant customer service/support but I do feel it now ?

If it is heat related in terms of loosening up the adhesive, the case will actually make it worse.
But if you leave the case on you won't notice it anyway, so who cares?

Just got a call from the support and they're processing my RMA! The rep was helpful and I did put in a request to expedite my RMA. Hope the new phone wouldn't run in to this! This is an uncommon problem what he has mentioned.

For the people that are having this issue, can you tell us what color your device is and where did you order it from?

I have a brand new one from best buy, TODAY, and the side is swelling.

Having Evo Issues? Sprint will exchange!!

This may have been discussed before but I just wanted to inform you guys on my experience.
So I purchased my EVO 6/16 and I absolutely loved it!! At first glance it was everything I expected an more. I looked a little closer at the device and I noticed quite a bit of things
1) Screen was not properly seated
2) Battery life was somewhat suspect (even with NO task manager and NO syncing)
3) a bit jittery when swiping from one screen to another (compared to that of replacement and my Nexus One)
4) Random buttons seemed to have been activated when pressing the power button (mostly the camera button)
5) Screen responsiveness was a bit off
So the above issues were just a few I noticed from my OLD EVO. Now this may be somewhat of an "Placebo Effect" of getting a new Evo. The phone they gave me today feels a bit different. Both phones has the Build (003) I jotted down all of the numbers I could and nothing seems different as far as build is concerned, however we all know quality control in different batches can vary from time to time but not by much (or at least shouldn't)
REVIEW OF EVO I RECEIVED 6/22 FROM SPRINT:
I went to the Sprint store on Monday 6/21, to exchange my OLD Evo because I was a lil disappointed with the above issues they inspected the device and said you are right the screen is not seated correctly. Of course the screen responsiveness worked perfectly for the rep lol. The manager came out and said he'd put me on the waiting list and I'd receive a new one as soon as they came in. I got a call less then 24-hrs later stating they had some in. So of course I jumped for joy dropped my son off at daycare and went to the sprint store to grab another Evo. It took about an hr because of the amount of people up there. I handed over my old Evo and got a new Evo. I asked to hold both in my hand because I read somewhere were a sprint rep tried to act like he exchanged a phone and changed all the stickers inside to make it seem like it was a new phone. So after I looked carefully at the numbers I had written down I held both in my hand and compared the screens. Rubbing my fingers on both screens on the left hand corner and side. As to no ones surprise what do you think happened!! DUH, the damn screen was coming up and the manager says, "WHAT THE HELL". So of course I get the new Evo and I get a brand new charger and kept my old one for my troubles per Manager.
So while keeping the above issues in mind, the new devices is showing absolutely NO light leakage and when I say NONE I mean NONE! No left corner. NO leakage above the 4 soft buttons, no nothing! Phone seems very responsive to every touch where you barely have to tap the button and it'll activate. This may be caused by the screen being properly seated unlike the previous one I had. Battery is still suspect however that is something I am willing to live with because I know what the phone can do and what it takes to perform those task. If anyone has any additional questions please PM me or ask here.
I know this is pretty lengthy but I really need to start giving back to XDA because, indirectly, you guys have done so much for me.
There all different
I called the Sprint store where I bought my phone, just a moment ago, and told them about how my screen is also starting to come up, you can see light around the edges of the phone, as if the screen is comming up and letting light out. not only that but even when I turn the phone off, and its real dark, I can see light underneath the soft keys, NOTHING IS TURNED ON THERE SHOULD BE NO LIGHT ON WHEN THE PHONE IS OFF!!! ya, kinda had to get that through to someone. anyway he told me to call a "repair" center, (which hes an idiot for telling me this) and that theyd have to "Diagnose it" - Or, "Look at it all bug eyed and say, HMMM.. a couple times, or Yup..." and tell me I need to replace it. Or what also might suck, is I dropped it a few days ago, from like 2 feet, didn't throw it, slam it, it was just a light drop. So there are a few chips around the edges of the phone, wounder if theyll try to tell me thats why its happening, even though it was doing this 3 days after I bought it. June 5th, so anyways I ended up calling the repair store before truckin over there, and they told me "No, you take it back to where you bought it, You dont want it repaired you want it Exchanged!
Hmmm.... Interesting, I could have sworn I told the other dude that! I know nothing Great Sprint Masta! So anyway they told me theyd have a shipment in tomorrow, and that No, I cannot get on a list nor could they "order" me one. Wounder if theyll be there tomorrow.

Complete BS. I can tell you from experience that the Sprint employees at the stores know pretty much nothing about anything.
Call Sprint's hotline directly and explain your situation. They should be able to order one for you and have it shipped directly to your address. That's how I got my EVO in the first place. When every store was sold out and it was no longer available online, all I had to do was call in and they ordered it and sent it out next day.

Yeah that is certainly a step you can take. If the store is unable to assist thats just more fuel to take with you when you call Sprint and let them know how you were treated in the store. Bet you'll have a new Evo by Friday lol.

I did call the hotline, I dialed *2 and talked to a fella and he told me the same, just take it up to the one that I bought it at and have them exchange it. I guess they play favorites.
Ya, I called em again, they told me all I can do is have them hold one, IF they have any, I think I'm just talkin to the wrong people about this. thanks for the input.
I bought mine from Radio Shack.
Do I need to deal with them to try to exchange mine, or can/should I just take it to a Sprint store directly and see if they will exchange it there?
Also, I've heard/read that HTC has pulled all the EVO's and is "fixing" the assembly line and expects to have "fixed" units available soon.
Assuming this is true (yes, I know), do you think they will replace the "defective" units after the 30 days, based on the 1 yr mfr warranty?
Or do I need to push for a replacement before July 3?
?????
okay heres what im understanding so far, sprint will replace/exchange my evo if it has light leakage or/and glass separation? please correct me if im wrong, so when i go to my local sprint store i wont look like a fool

+1... Im in the same boat.
Sprint online order center told me that for the glass separation n light leaking I should get a replacement from sprint dot com (being the place I got my phone from) n that going to a local repair store would only mean I get a refurbished evo the rep said "if you paid for anew device n its defective you should naturally want a new replacement not a refurbished unit" so I agreed the phone is still out of stock at sprint dot com n as soon as it goes in stock I was told to call them n demand my new replacement. Further more the rep said even if I go past my 30 day limit n the device is still not in stock that I will not pl pay for anything because it was defective to begin with.
I went to a sprint repair center and the guy told me it is a normal thing for the phone to have a light leak and that the glass was normal. He said he has a Evo too and his is doing the same thing. I showed him how my glass is up and does not have an edge like the other side of the phone and he said that the phone is fine... WHAT THE HECK... no it isn't! It has lifted some since I bought it.
All 3 of ours are having the glass problem and mine has a half blown speaker. Sprint said to take it into a corp store so they could put a note on the account, so I did, but sprint.com is still out so I can't replace them.
Another week and a half and I'll be getting close to the 30 day mark. I hope I get some working ones by then!
I know it is not normal for the phone to be glowing in the dark...

Coming from having 2 faulty Heros and having to deal with CS, your best bet is to use *2. Lately Sprint's CS has been amazing after horrible reviews. Let them know your problem and they will take care of it. I have had 2 different options. Either have Sprint overnight me a replacement phone. Or have them note my account and I go to the local Sprint store to have it replaced. Both have worked flawlessly.

Once you go into the store and speak with a manager politely ask him when your 30 day satisfaction guarentee started. Its unfortunate that you have to mention it but I am sure once he see that you are still within your trial that will light some fire under his a$$. Not only will he think he'll lose a new client but a new client that bought an EVO. Should work...
i'm not sure if i want to wait for the software patch for the screen since some people aren't having the issue. It won't fix the screen lifting issue anyway. Mine is very slightly raised at the bottom barely noticable but i'm woried that it will get worse over time.
I also purchased mine at Radio Shack and am wondering if I need to exchange it there or go to a sprint store.

3rd Replacement = Damaged Again... What Gives?!

So, my launch day EVO started collecting dust under the screen on the top left corner and I took it to a local Sprint store to get it repaired. They put a screen that was all scratched and dented on the sides on and assumed I would be satisfied with it. Wrong!
After forcing them to put my old one back (apparently they didn't have any other in store), I called Sprint and got them to send me a replacement phone.
Phone came in and I noticed heavy scratches on the camera and the kickstand was completely loose (would open up by itself). Got them to send me another replacement...
Phone arrived last week with the bottom of the glass completely loose. I could lift it with my nail. Called and after *****ing for hours, I got them to send me yet another replacement...
Phone came in with exactly the same symptom. What's going on? I don't know what else to do from here on out. I know it is technically not Sprint's fault, but this is getting ridiculous. I thought my experiences with the Palm Pre were bad... that was nothing.
Now I know they most likely will not send me yet another phone unless I take it to a store. That's going to be another 5-hour ordeal. Is there any way I can get a new device or a fully-functional refurb? I tried retentions and they said there was nothing they could do. =/

The only way is with the Asurion process.
If you call *2 and explain the situation they may refund all, most likely part, of the $100 deductible.
I suggest it though.

That might not be a bad idea after all.
UPDATE: I just spoke to what appeared to be a thug on the other end of the line at Sprint's Tech Support. A nice thug at that. After decrypting our conversation through his strong ebonics, I understood that he created an eTicket (which I received online already) and told me to present it to the store clerk where I will be handed a brand new device. Is this possible? On the ticket it states:
Description of Issue:
Battery Damaged/Swollen/Cracked
Battery Won't Charge
Which is nothing related to my issues and will be apparent when they see it. I sounded skeptical but he assured me that it would work. For me to bring all my stuff (box if I have it, cables, manuals, etc) because I will be handed a brand new one when I get there. I'm still skeptical but I guess we'll have to wait and see. Anyone experience something similar?
Also, he told me I can go to an affiliate store for this (doesn't have to be corporate). Should I even bother? I feel they're less prone to handing me a new device.
I really hope it works out as I don't want to go through the hassle of unrooting and erasing my phone to see that nothing happened.
Finally, will a corporate store have newer phones than affiliated stores or vice versa? If I'm getting something new, I want it to be brand spankin' knew to make sure they worked out all the kinks.
Thanks again!

Dust under the screen means that the screen is coming apart.
Eventually that will lead to touchscreen failure or something of the kind.
Getting that fixed is more preventative.
Plus, you pay $200 + for a device, you don't deserve to have a sub-standard device.

Well, apparently he might just be a criminal according to the sketchiness of this situation and his alleged connections with stores. I guess the term would apply then.
I don't see thug as being derogative anyways. Have you not watched TV much? It's everywhere.
Anyways, if I give someone that works for Sprint and has access to their system my eTicket number, do you think they might be able to explain what it means and how it would be handled at their store?!
OP: I understood, and I LOL'd
Taking offense at ignorance just confirms it....
Back on topic...
Welcome to the world of refurbs.
Call customer service, ask to talk to Account Services. Tell them you will cancel your account if you dont get a brand new replacement. Tell them you are tired ot dealing with crappy refurbs, and dont have the time to keep going back to the store.
Go to a sprint store, tell them there's a ticket in the system. Before you do call sprint back an have them code the ticket correctly. When you go to the store don't tell them what the issue is, just say there's a ticket and have them pull it up. Once they do that the store is subject to a survey, they won't want you to give them a bad survey so they will fully fix or give you a fully functioning device.

Or so I thought... I called a rep from the store a bit ago and explained to them the situation. Basically, they told me that I would still have to wait for them to attempt a repair and if not possible, they would send me a refurbished device.
What's the f'ing point of having this eTicket in the first place? I could go there without anything and they would proceed in the same manner. This is really getting annoying... The local store is always extremely busy and getting out of there with 3 hours is unrealistic. I'm tired of wasting time dealing with this simple fix.

The local store is always extremely busy and getting out of there with 3 hours is unrealistic. I'm tired of wasting time dealing with this simple fix.

The eTicket tells everybody how many times the phone has been checked or submitted to be checked so when customers call and say "I've had this phone replaced 3 times!!!" Sprint can say "No you haven't". They will ALWAYS have to look at/troubleshoot the phone before any exchanges are made.
I've had mine replaced twice and was able to get a new phone. But Jesus Christ was it difficult. They will only give you a brand new phone if the store agrees to it (they have to be reimbursed by Sprint) or if Sprint themselves, agree which is usually a special case.
Here's what you do:
Call up Sprint customer service, explain to them the situation. Don't expect it to go anywhere. Just keep escalating the issue. After you get as high as you can go, call Sprint's Executive Hotline Number: 703-433-4401
Tell them the same thing. 99% chance they will tell you that they can't just give you a brand new Evo. Ask them for a case number and then write it down somewhere. Then, email [email protected] telling them what's going on, and be sure to include your number, account PIN, and the case number (if you have one). This is Dan Hesse's email addresses. He reads the emails, but they are mostly answered by his secretaries. They will call you back on a weekday probably during the same week. You'll get a call from "_________, from the Office of Dan Hesse". Explain to them the situation and be sure to detail your frustration with getting the issue solved and how this is not how a company should handle things.
Also, one of them women that called me back said that refurbished doesn't necessarily mean that the phone is opened up, gutted, and the parts are replaced with working ones. She said that some of the phones are just those that are returned because of the 30 day guarantee and then just put back on shelves. She also said that the only things that are fixed are the things that are written down by the repair specialist in the store, which is stupid because they only write down 1 problem even if there are multiple issues with the phone. Obviously, there is an issue with quality control.
It will take a while, but this is what I went through, and they were able to work with the store near my house to give me a brand new Evo, in exchange for the store getting 2 refurbished phones from Sprint. It's a white 0004 with no issues at all. They will probably tell you that you need to take the phone to a repair center again to have it looked at (the one you have on you), but tell them you've spent way too much time on this issue and you just want it fixed ASAP. If you have a preferred store, let them know which one it is.
PS: Ask for a new white one. Because the white ones were initially only offered at Best Buy, so the ones that are in the Sprint stores now are mostly 0004s, and they have no issues.
Hope this helps,
Frederick

Checked my RMA status.....

Waiting-[WF9] Wait for Customer Confirmation-NTF
i'm hoping NTF doesn't mean no trouble found.....as my bezel was creaky and the screen could be pushed down below the bezel...not to mention the light bleed.
Yep, NTF = No Trouble Found or Nothing To Fix (I've heard it referred to as both).
did you send it to texas?
how long did it take between delivery confirmation, and your rma being trackable?
i ask because i got delivery confirmation from UPS yesterday, and my tracking number still says "You have reqeusted RMA no. for the machines below; however, they have not been received by us." They also spelled "requested" incorrectly.
so if you press on your screen and it slips below the bezel, that's normal....and having light bleed, that's normal...and the copper flecking off that's normal and not covered under warranty...let me guess, they'll charge me to mail it unfixed back to me. yes sent to texas, they've had it since wed...
Where do you check your RMA status?
Nevermind. Found it. Mine is repaired and on it's way! Woohoo (Bet it does not get here until Monday now though as it was sent today)!

if you don't mind me asking, what's your general location?
i'm hoping they do 1 or 2-day shipping.
UK it's being sent from Czech Republic. Was sent on Monday. Signed for on Tuesday. Repaired and sent out today (Friday) so a pretty quick turnaround really.
never seen a company so brutal in regards to fixing problems...they must be swamped with returns and are losing money...never had this kind of problem with Dell.
Tell me about it, a bunch of true pricks for sure. The idea was great and I never considered how much execution matters but matter it does. They've already admitted that the cost of the unit barely makes even, they receive the profits from the keyboard dock. Their ****ty QC has probably led to so much returns that they're desperate to stop this cut in their profits that wouldn't be there if they didn't **** out on QC, in other words, focused on execution.
If they had told me it would take this long from the beginning I wouldn't have even bothered. Two weeks they said, it's two weeks now, so what's it really going to be? Five months?
It's not even virgin anymore, they've violated her. I guarantee when I get it back and use it, two days later the thing will die. Just never going to put up with their **** again, there's always a first time for everything. Glad I learned now rather than later.
What's funny is in the order they give, "Waiting" occurs before "Repairing" which is logical. One must have the parts to start a repair. Mine was in repairing then it went to waiting for parts. I guess in Asus crazyland the repair starts before they get the parts. Maybe they opened it up and are using the screen part of the bezel as a coaster while they wait for the parts they should have had or ordered before starting the repair.

That's also a funny part. I've read that the TF2 may be out as early as October.
Maybe they should try fixing the **** they dump on consumers before creating a new revision already. I think we'd like one without the ****ed up massive lightbleed screens, little hairy dust pieces under the glass, AC adapters that don't charge or blow up when they do and last but most certainly not least, springy bezels that were imported from Sonic the Hedgehog Act 1.

TF2 = fix TF.....
i called asus, told them i saw a note where they're waiting for my confirmation...they had no clue what that meant..said it could mean anything...i have to talk to a guy in europe/asia to find out what a guy in texas wants in regards to my transformer. How about just emailing me that you can't find the problem i listed in a page long letter..even though i pointed it out very clear and precise. Maybe i'll get it back someday, in pieces and COD most probably.
Yup, the last part is likely since CheyenneDonna get hers back with a gouge on the back.
Regretting ever having sent it in. With Asus crazy-land, nothing is as it seems. You would think after having the first one returned the next one from a later batch would have better QC. Not the case. Then you would think sending a defective unit in would come back better than it was before. Not the case.
So next time I'll play by Asus crazy-land rules, instead of giving them my money I'll keep my money.
i should have went with my first inclination, selling it on ebay at a huge loss.
Product Received >[ Waiting-[WB1] Wait for Material/Spare Parts ] > Repairing > Final Testing > Packing > Ready for Shipping > Repair Finished

Ok I called Asus and now they are accusing me of damaging the tablet. I am so mad right now!
I wish I had read this thread before sending my device in, stupid on my part. The only issue I had was that, if I turned brightness over 50%, the backlight would shut off and not come back on for anything.
Anyways, I subscribed to this thread. Ill let you guys know how the RMA process goes. My device arrived on Monday and I had a confirmation that the device was confirmed and keyed in on Thursday.
And the transformer that I rma'd is my second one after the first bricked by FOTA.
Where do you check the status? I've been working with an Asus rep via these forums.

Samsung will not change my back cover!

I have a GS3 for att and a few hours after i bought the phone i noticed the back door cover is not snapping in on the bottom left side. After thinking i might be able to return the phone to the best buy i got it from and exchange it i decided to wait two days. Turns out my only option is returning not exchanging due to the high demand of the phone. I tried to call samsung to see if could possibly send me a back cover since all the hooplah about the back cover recall during production i figured it would not be a problem. I first tried to get this fixed through their live chat system. In the end they told me its not cover because its physical damage. I proceeded to call their support and see if they could give me the same answer. They in turn said I would have to send the phone to them but since I have no oter phone now I could not do that so I politely asked to speak to a manager but there were "on the phones" and "busy" so they took my number and told me they would call me back. Well.... I guess you can figure out what happened with that promise. I called a second time and after a 40 minute call it got me nowhere. They then told me on my second call that the back cover was not covered in the warranty because it was a "detachable part of the phone" and that it was an "accessory". I told them this does not make sense because isnt the battery considered detachable and an accessory? This time i asked for a manager again and I guess the managers were being lazy because not one of them wanted to speak with me because they were on "call" ironically. Can anyone help me with this situation any suggestions anything I can tell them to actually do something about this? I also already told them that all over the internet there were news about defective back covers during manufacturing and how it was pulled to be fixed and how people are posting pics of back cover issues also including on this forum! Im so aggravated with their customer support that i have a headache.
Look up on ebay to find a replacement. I know a lot of sites sell battery back covers and they aren't expensive
sent from my GALAXY SIII
Because of the crazy demand of the phone, you may have to wait it out if you can't be without phone and hope BBY gets some stock in within your 30 day (?) exchange window.
If you absolutely can't wait, you may wanna try ebay for a replacement back, since it's been reported the the international doors work just as well. But that would require you to shell out some dough for something that isn't your fault
Stock back cover is crap, really poor decision from Samsung. Finger print magnet and slippery. Anyways there are tons of 3rd party replacement back covers anywhere from 2$ to 10$, with better decals or nice tactile texture some even metal or leather.
Check amazon or just Google.

Buy the official flip cover - replaces the back. Use that until you find a replacement back. Can we even get those yet by the way?...
I've read that some of the back covers block NFC. Be careful with what you get.

Try putting the bottom left in first then bottom right then go up. Mine was like this until I did this.

you can but on ebay, offical samsung back battery covers in white and blue. They are around $30.00 . I got mine a couple of days ago as I wanted an extra cover.
Wow, this is really poor customer service from Samsung. I had a loose battery door on my Motorola DX. I did online chat with rep, after 2 minutes of taking my info then she sent me a brand new battery door. Received in mail 2 days later.
I would say file a better business Bureau complaint. Everytime I have filed a complaint someone from the executive offices called me back. I filed one against LG and got them to replace my phone after sending it in for repair 3 times and all 3 times didn't fix it. I also had an issue with dell and filed a complaint and the escalation office called me and bent over backwards to make me happy. So I would suggest doing that and you will get a call back within a week guaranteed

First, the manufacturing issue had everything to do with the surface quality, not the fit issue.
Second, you need to learn to insert the cover properly. If you insert from the bottom and just press hard around the edge all the way around, it will fit in snuggly.
Third, if you still can't get the cover to assemble or break the cover in the process of forcing it in, just buy a replacement cover. It is not expensive and certainly not worth your time and effort to argue with Samsung over it, imho.
Just trying to be helpful...

Im not retarded I know how to put the back cover on I have already done this and it is not staying. Im one of the few people that read the manuals. I have never broke the cover because it came like that out of the box. I would not be calling samsung or posting on this forum had any of this been my fault at all.

All that time on the phone and posting on forums, you might as well have bought one off ebay. Unless your time isn't worth anything.

My thing is why should I have to spend money on something that was a defect. Thats not right as a company to make a customer do that for a less than a week old phone.
Just return the phone and get a new one.
First world problems suck. Thanks for sharing.
...
Put a case on it, and you'll never notice it again.
Call wherever you bought it, see if someone returned a defective one and have them swap the cover for you.

I broke my screen on day 1! Yay!

So quick run down, I pre-ordered the phone on launch day of announcement, and the phone came in today. i was so excited! anyways messing around with it some, and it was pretty damn cool! got on my car, had the phone on my lap, took a turn and it went in between the car seat, and the center console ( "pit of death", or "the void" as i call it ). Once i got home, and started to fish for the phone, and when i grabbed it i heard a crack. This is the result....
im now contacting google to see how much it would cost to get it fixed since i didnt get the protection plan (first phone that ever broke on me so i thought i would be fine), if not just repair it myself.
Edit:
So to give users a TL,DR version of the scenario, I was handed over to another company for no warranty support. OEM parts so not bad. replacement cost for screen is $150.
damnnnnnn that hurts i have already ordered the few cases.
I'm gonna go by Verizon in the morning, see if they have a case for a decent price. I dropped my Note 7 in the void a few times, but since it was on recall I couldn't care less. Now that I'm stuck with the Pixel XL for 2 years, I am gonna protect it lol. Keep us updated on the cost of repairs, though. I didn't get the insurance either
That sucks man. Let us know how much will be to fix it.
That blows... :/ Makes me kinda glad I ordered it with a case and glass screen protector.
So after calling Google, i pretty much got bounced back and forth between them and HTC. I'm not gonna deal with that crap.
There seems to be a shop close to me that seems to have replacement screens available for $150, thinking of just biting the bullet because looking around online, doesn't seem to have much options without being stuck waiting.
Sort of blows cause my tempered glass protector was scheduled to arrive either tomorrow or saturday.

for you.....
One reviewer had a 5 inch pixel that broke the screen. Seems even with gorilla glass these phones are fragile. Waiting on mine from the google but ordering a good case now...
As I'm fretting about why my order has been processing for 50 hours now I see this and now I feel less crappy.
My condolences OP.
If you used a Credit card to purchase it you may have some kind of protection

I was worried about this exact thing. Does Google not have an official repair service set up for incidents like this? If so, this is going to be really bad for anyone who hasn't purchased the protection..

Can you not add the insurance after the purchase within a certain time? Make the claim afterwards? Just a thought

Bummer! Although hearing you called Google and are getting bounced between them AND HTC is very disheartening! Thought this phone was "the first by Google"?! And that HTC was basically a silent partner. If indeed the case, Google should be handling this themselves, not bouncing people off to HTC...a vendor who isn't even on the marketing materials!

This. Most of these policies have a week or two grave period where you can opt in.

For some reason, Google won't let you add warranty after placing the order (preorder). It has to be at order time itself.
I tried to add warranty even before my phone was shipped, and was told "No"
If paid with credit card, there may be hope. Or add square trade warranty.

Yeah sucked getting bounced back to each other. I'll probably try giving them a call again in the morning to see what happens then. Hopefully I wont get bounced around by them and get this resolved by them, I would like to try to avoid a 3rd party if possible.
so i just realized not too long ago after removing the case that there is a slight bump on the back side of it too. I really hope it doesn't affect the internals in any way shape for form.
I was on the fence about buying a case. I am now buying a crazy fancy one.
$900 for a phone that easily cracks?
HTC is handling repairs I read somewhere. It sounds like they may not have all their ducks in a row yet between HTC and Google on repairs.
