Full screen mode + games - Google Pixel 2 XL Guides, News, & Discussion

Is there a way to force apps / games to open in a 16:9 portrait / 16:9 landscape mode with black bars so that the image isn't cropped? I switched to the Pixel 2 XL from the Galaxy S8+ and it did this unless you opted into playing it fullscreen.
Right now the Pixel 2 XL just automatically opens games in fullscreen mode which crops out some of the edges and thus making some games unplayable. Is there a display setting I'm missing? Anyone else having the same issue?

Same issue
The screen for it popped up so fast when I opened it for the first time. I am considering deleting the game and downloading it again

Are you on 8.0 or 8.1? When I was on 8.1, playing golf clash, it was zoomed in a bit and cropped out on the sides. Since I reverted back to 8.0, golf clash is not zoomed in anymore. They may have fixed the issue on their end.
What game you trying play?

I'm on 8.1. I'm playing walking dead road to survival. How do I revert to 8.0 if this seems to be the case?

You can go to Google Android development to unenroll in the beta. You will get software update to revert back to 8.0. This will wipe your device.

Looks like it comes down to the developer. I opted out and reverted back to 8.0 public release and the game is still stuck in fullscreens mode.

Fix for shaky display in Cardboard SDK

At: https://developers.google.com/cardboard/android/release-notes
I found this in a recent update:
>Cardboard SDK for Android v0.5.7
> Improved drift correction so that the head tracking is stable even on phones with low quality sensors.
I assume this is why stock, unrooted Alcatel 5.5 inch Idol 3 no longer jitters.
Has anyone tried any other phones which had shaky Cardboard displays?
How about the 2nd generation Moto G?
---
In My xiaomi redmi 3 i get jittery feelings when using cardboard. I tried 'gyroscope noise filter' but it didn't work. What should i do? Please tell me something, i was so excited about vr, and now after getting a vr box i cannot get the experience of vr because of this shaky thing... It got me headache i f i wear it for sometime. I will be overjoyed if you please reply at '[email protected]'

Sensor Kinetics app
Install this app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.innoventions.sensorkinetics
to find out what sensors the phone has and how they perform.
See:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/ido...ard-vr-apps-dont-jitter-t3305010/post65066897
for an example screenshot. Note that the graph is showing all 3 axes, roll, pitch and yaw.
Post your own screenshots here so we can compare behavior of sensors.

S8+ videos stuttering a bit on chrome

While watching videos using chrome on S8+ the video image is stuttering a lil bit.
Is there any settings to change to fix this?
Thanks.

I noticed the very obvious stutter as well on my new S8 + playing it back on the phone as well as my quad core i7 PC. It was reduced about 90% by turning OFF the video stabilization in the settings tab located top right of camera setting.
For some strange reason, it works best on the 3840x2160 and 1080P 60 fps settings.
The stutter was quite jarring and disappointing when I first saw it. Cars would literally stop for a moment and then resume again a few feet back. Much better now. It looks like even with stabilization off the optical (as opposed to switchable digital) appears to be still working so the results look very good.
The auto-focus is also amazing - the best I've encountered (including some pretty expensive 4K camcorders).
The still camera, particularly in low light is amazing! Hard to believe the detail, color, and lack of noise in dim light photos with no flash - WOW!
i am experiencing the same exast thing where all google videos keep stuttering constantly

Software HDR decoding from Pixel XL

Has anyone looked into this already?
https://m.androidcentral.com/youtube-hdr-support-now-available-pixel-phones
Since the Axon 7 has exactly the same panel as the Pixel XL it'd be nice to see HDR support on it, even though it might look worse

Thanks, I didn't know about that mod.
After installing it, I managed to enable HDR options for the videos, but we lose the 1440p resolution, the videos don't play smooth anymore and the image quality is even worse. Using either S8 or Pixel XL manufacturers/models.
At least I have black theme and background playback.

YouTube locks HDR videos to 1080p for anything that is not a pc or chromecast ultra. Normal videos should be unchanged and still have 1440p

No, do not use unofficial versions only use the official one
@KevinX8,
Hi, as far as I can see, there is no 1440P for video, so what is the issue with your phone, can you make itmore clear? Thanks!

Google has limited HDR on android to 1080p, if you want a higher res HDR you must use a chromecast ultra or supported pc

What are the model/manufacturers you have to use? I used 'google' and 'Pixel XL' but it seemingly wasn't right xd
@Choose an username..., @aLexzkter ,
Have you fixed your phone's problem? Which model are you apply when this issue happen on your phone? Usually, there is no 1440 for video, are you sure?

This was not a problem at all. The thing is that enabling HDR for Youtube limits the quality to 1080p hdr. This is basically a technical limitation and is not a problem of the phones.

It's a limitation put in place by Google themselves to sell more chromecast ultras, only them and pcs are allowed to stream 4k HDR from youtube

nope, got it on my pixel 2 xl too
just updated..
Same here. Just checked for updates and there it was.
But no super res zoom yet
I have tried zooming in with this latest update vs the modified camera app by cstark27, the modded app is much clearer
Not yet. You should update the camera app from the store?

No Super Res Zoom though, and no Top Shot... I'll keep my modified Camera app for now
Just did a quick test on "night mode to enhance resolution" . As you can see from attached picture, night mode did enhance the resolution. (Note the small logo on the right top corner of projection screen. It spells "DA-LITE") At least the logo is discernable on night mode picture while not clear with normal mode.
Might be super zoom or just resolution enhancement offered by night mode.
Those features aren't coming officially to the Pixel 2. Which modded app has turned those on?

Night Sight does a lot of noise cleaning. Just look at the detail it gets in my tires, wheels, and breaks.
Also, super zoom isn't in this update nor is coming to the Pixel 2.

Got the update... Amazing result!
Turned my Pixel 2 XL on just to test the new night sight mode.. it's freakin' witchcraft I tell ya.
I have a OnePlus 6T and a Mate 20 X that I've been playing with and while the newer phones are nice, they still don't add up to Google's camera.. I just tried taking night sight shots on the Mate 20 X and the camera app keeps crashing.. facepalm.

No, not directly from Google at least. If you look at the latest Google Camera apk's, they all require Android 9.0+. I can't see them spending anymore time on Oreo. That's not to say some crafty dev won't find a way, or already has. Why would you still want to be on Oreo... xposed support?

None at the moment. But this feature will be on the Pie Update.
Any custom ROM at present solves this problem bro??
try gsi roms. They have working notch on my experience.
For videos, you can use MI Video player (MIUI).
For games, wait for Pie update which MAY fix the issue.
