8.1 Developer Preview released - Google Pixel 2 Guides, News, & Discussion

Credit to @skaforey for the scoop over at the Pixel2 XL forum, and at this point just about every other android tech site.

Interesting change to the navigation bar. Looks like they're trying to reduce the burn in problem people are getting.

Does this use visualcore

It keeps telling me I don't have any eligible devices.. as I type this on my fully stock Pixel 2.
Edit: I'm now able to enroll!

TLDR; Make sure you update your fastboot first!
I flashed the 8.1 beta using an old fastboot (that didn't know about slots) and now I'm stuck in the bootloader. I can't get android to boot, and I can't even get into the stock recovery or download options.
I've tried flashing the stock image several times, but that didn't do any good.
Any Help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Read up over at the 2XL forum: https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-2-xl/how-to/8-1-developer-images-available-t3694556/page3
Some talk about having to extract and flash files individually. Maybe that'll help. I've had to do that on devices in the past.

dude, beware flashing this, thought I bricked my device, had to manually flash everything.... wtf google

I'm waiting for the OTA tomorrow. Looking forward to the colored nav bar and fading buttons! It's nice to see Google taking action on something rather than having to enable an accessibility service for a 3rd party app to color the navigation bar, and the fading buttons are a nice touch.

Wow, that's quite the hook up. Do you have the insurance?

Has anyone noticed a difference in the HDR+ processing speed or something like that? (preliminary Pixel core was enabled with this 8.1 DP1)

Who's received the update via OTA after signing up for the beta? I'm still waiting here on my Pixel 2.

In general they are rather stable, but there are exceptions.
As to any particular phone, you can wait a couple of days and see if there are many reports of problems.

[Q] Updated Nexus 4 with Android 4.4 Factory image. Only seeing boot animation

Hello,
My name is Rahul. This is the first time I am posting.
I flashed the latest factory image for Android Kitkat onto the Nexus 4. the image was occam KRT16O. I followed the instructions and used fastboot on mac and ran the flash-all.sh script that was provided.
The log of the script was as indicated below and the device rebooted. However, it was stuck in the boot animation for a long time.
What can I do next? The options I can consider are:
1. force reboot the nexus 4 by holding the power button [if that would work] and flashing the image again.
2. go to the bootloader (if reboot works) and switch away to the previous ROM (I was using CM and PAC for some time now flashing them nightly) and wait for a new more days.
I would love to try the new factory image for KitKat on my phone and would appreciate if you could provide some direction.
Thanks in advance for your help.
- Rahul

I guess that you, like me, took the wipe flag off the fastboot bat file right?
Well I was told that 4.3 --> 4.4 needs a full wipe so I put that -w back in place and everything works, my 4.4 works
and my phone looks fresher than fresh.
Good luck

opssemnik, I downloaded the file again, unzipped and tried again. It gave me the same log. I then opened the zip which contained user data.img and flashed it and it still waits at the boot animation for a long time. I think its already been twenty minutes.
Is there anything else I can try?
Thanks for your response.

Yes. The flash-all.sh uses -w which fully wipes the device. I remember reading about -w somewhere.

I had the same problem, came from PA 3.99 and flashed the kitkat google image and phone got stuck in bootloop. Only way i could fix it was to get the new sdk studio and use the fastboot from that
the last log u gave looks like mine so i guess its ok, but u were using a really outdated adb huh? im using the minimal adb + fastboot from like 6 to 7 months ago(so the fastboot / adb is from that time witch means is old) and i can flash the stock images

just ask him for the link as of which he got it from probably easier.
Edit: May I ask you guys a question if you skimmed through this forum prior to making a decision to upgrade you would see so many people with the same issue and post day in and day out about flashing images. I am confused as to why those of you want to flash images instead of just flashing through a custom recovery. There is no difference? other than less headaches from what I see

May have to start from scratch since this is how all others have gotten past that screen or simply why not flash a zip. So much easier than dealing with images

Can't wipe or factory reset Nexus 7 (2102) using multiple methods

A month or so ago my Nexus 7 (2012) started rebooting itself after a minute or so of turning on - I think this may have been during OTA upgrade from JWR66Y to new release. I tried to fix this by clearing app data and booting into CWM recovery and deleting cache and dalvik cache but the problem persisted. So I decided to reset the Nexus 7 back to factory image and have tried every means of doing so but every time I keep getting back to my original data and the app crashes and reboot continues. I have never had any issues connecting to the device on USB and ADB so this is not a driver issue. Things I have tried:
* Hard reset on phone from recovery (plus endless deleting of cache and dalvik)
* Hard reset using Wugfresh toolkit (plus near every other tool on there)
* Hard refresh from recovery mode
* Hard refresh using ADB and deleting user data etc.
* Flash recovery from ADB (also using Wugfresh as per above)
* ADB sideload from recovery of factory images, bootloaders and other ROM's
* Lock/unlock/root/unroot - using ADB commands as well as Wugfresh and other toolkits
* Delete data, system, cache
It seems like the Nexus 7 going into read only mode? Erasing /data and everything else in recovery has no effect and also when trying to overwrite the bootloader I get "writing 'bootloader'... FAILED (remote: (InvalidState))" using Wugfresh toolkit as per below. The device is still running JWR66Y.
I'm totally stuck now as to how I get my Nexus 7 back again! I have seen other people having issues with the JWR66Y bootloader (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1907796) but have tried all the workarounds and can't seem to find a way to overwrite the bootloader...

Groundhog Day
Hi there
I too have the same problem.
Whatever I do it is Groundhog Day... Seems to be Read-Only.
I have given up & consider it to be a hardware issue. Ordered another motherboard for mine.
barrymcsorley said:
* Delete data, system, cache

Glad to hear I'm not the only one in this loop! I'll be gutted if it turns out to be hardware issue. Just been on ifixit.com to see how difficult it is to replace motherboard - maybe this will be opportunity to upgrade to the new Nexus 7 2013 version.....

Any progress here? Same issue for me. Have searched everywhere for a fix and can't find one!

No joy for me. Think I've read every forum and tried every single possible command or procedure and after all of them I end up rebooting back into the same login screen and crashing apps. The fact I can't wipe the data with any command makes me think it's pretty much a hardware issue. Now looking to see how feasible it is to swap out CPU/motherboard......

Very frustrating. I'd even contacted Google support as a last ditch effort but as soon as they learned my 1 year warranty had expired they dropped me and sent me Asus' contact info.
I understand warranties but I'm still rather annoyed.

Yeah I tried Google support too but no joy as warranty long gone. As you say can accept that but annoyed that I now have a £200 paperweight that I can spend another £50 on in the hope of fixing but no guarantee.....
Nexus 7 2012 help
It is not a hardware issue as I can use fastboot to write correct boot loader from jrrv version and it says success. I can't wipe system cache or data. It says its erasing or if I use format command it says its formatting but when I boot up the device nothing is wiped. I found another guy in the same boat woth his Alcatel phone. Its obviously is a software glitch. Any one can help me with this.
Hello,
Does any one know the answer to this issue. Please help

me. AtHey all I have same problem after installing omni ROM on my nexus 7 2012. Its version 4.4.2. Please help me
Add another soul to this helpless ship ... My nexus 7 became like this during the night... not erasing anything. Nobody find any help with this?!
Hi there
I too have the same problem.
Has become so during the night while in recharge.
Impossible ... delete ... restore ... wipe ... flash ... anything.
I am glad I am not the only one in this boat.
My N7 started acting up this weekend. Like the OP, I have just about tried everything under the sun in reflashing the kernel, the rom, etc but nothing works.
If anyone has any ideas, please share.
Thanks.

Could you try relocking then unlocking the bootloader? This guarantees a data wipe.

I tried to relock the tablet last night, but it didn't work. I originally tried to do it manually via "fastboot oem lock", and it seemed to work. The "tablet is now locked" message appeared on screen. However, the command line on my desktop froze until I manually rebooted the tablet, which caused a failure message to appear in the DOS window.
I then tried WUG's toolkit. Again, everything on the surface appears to be a success until the tablet reboots. But, the Google screen continues to show the unlock symbol.
It is very weird that fastboot and adb seem to communicate properly and get the correct responses but the actual data on the tablet doesn't change. The only way I can alter any data is when I boot TWRP via WUG (I have CWM on the tablet) and delete folders in the \sdcard folder. Unfortunately, the virtual TWRP app won't connect for ADB sideload and I can't seem to get TWRP to replace CWM on the tablet either.
RIP Nexus 7
If anyone finds a fix for this , thanks in advance.
I've got the same problem - will buy new mobo
Can't unlock the bootloader the normal way (fastboot oem-unlock). Don't have the "blobs", so nvflash won't work. Can't believe there isn't a way to completely "nuke and pave" so to speak. I might hold out for the Nexus 9, or just get a new mobo from ebay.
Hey I am in the same boat with nexus 7 2012 WiFi. Can't even flash factory image back. Unable to install any new apps. When I reboot any new apps installed are wiped out and tablet returns to old state with same data
Crap, how did I miss this tread before I started a new one .
Add me to the list, I have the same issue:

I am pretty sure this one is a doozy, or that I am missing something very simple... you know, one or the other
First the facts: 2012 Wifi Nexus 7 running 5.0, stock rom, unlocked bootloader - nothing fancy about it.
Some background: I've been having a constant reboot issue for a while now... not quite a bootloop, as it allows me to enter my screenlock and even open the settings menu before suddenly rebooting again (at random intervals). Any changes I make in that time are lost upon reboot and it takes me right back to my 5.0 lockscreen (even if I disabled it the last time it was booted) - Same thing happens if I uninstall any apps, they are there when I reboot again.
I am able to see my device in both fastboot and recovery.
I've tried a factory reset from the Settings menu - no go, right back to my 5.0 lockscreen.
I've tried to reset from recovery - no go, right back to my 5.0 lockscreen.
I reflashed the image from the bootloader - no go, right back to my 5.0 lockscreen.
I flashed 4.4.4 - no go, right back to my 5.0 lockscreen.
I flashed 4.4.2 - no go, right back to my 5.0 lockscreen.
I flashed 5.0.2 and the same thing happened - no go, right back to my 5.0 lockscreen. (I was able to check About Tablet... no changes there either)
same thing with Safe Mode- no go, right back to my 5.0 lockscreen.
Wug's toolkit failed on me when I tried that, after the bootloader and boot image failed I got an out of memory error. (tried a couple versions here, Jelly bean actually forced fastboot to close on me)
I did a Remote Erase Request from Android Device Manager, it did not work either.
This is sounding like a hardware issue, right? Anything I can do about that if so?
ETA: Booo, this is my issue isn't it? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588911
How the heck did I miss that before posting this

Asus Service Support in Spain (cygitsolutions.com) considers it is a hardware issue. They want a motherboard replacement for 190€ (like a new one).

so all that's necessary to type "mfastboot oem lock", or is the flash back to stock for safety reasons....listing steps isn't that helpful if the reasons aren't posted.
and have you tested "mfastboot oem unlock" or does the exploit need to be ran again to unlock the bootloader?
....shouldn't post about locking the bootloader without saying if it can be unlocked again or not.
EDIT:
And label or mention that this is for Windows Only
Check the flash script with notepad and I hope you will understand.

Other than oem lock begin, it doesn't look that different than any other automated flashing setup. Basically, are those signed partitions necessary to lock the bootloader on this phone (Nexus 4 can fastboot oem lock while running CM), or would a fastbooted factory reset good enough to lock the phone running a custom rom? And can the phone be unlocked, exploit, fastboot, or other, after doing this -- I think that's the most important question.
Not trying to nitpick or whatever, but some of my questions are important to know before doing something like intentionally locking the bootloader w/o knowing if it can unlock again or not (I assume it can, but still, it would be nice to have that confirmed before doing this...not that I am, I don't even have a 925...but I do get asked a lot of questions about every single 8960 phone...it's what happens when you're a helpful RC)

Yes you're right!
the only difference is the oem lock begin and oem lock.
You need those signed partitions
By the way you can unlock the bootloader again from motorola website.
Thanks for correcting me.

So basically this method should only be done by phones that can officially be unlocked by Motorola? Personally, I don't want to be the one that finds out a hack unlocked phone can't go from status 2 to status 3...but that's what random idiots who flash anything they see are for...(un)fortunately for us, there's a lot of them...
Seeing as how a ton of us are running hacked unlocked phones, including myself, and how not everyone here actually has a RAZR HD, including myself...anything discussing bootloaders and locking them needs to be well documented, if only to cover your ass when some dipcrap does this and screws their self. Though it does say XT925 in the thread title and don't do this on a 926 in the thread...
To clear all doubts I took the liberty to unlock my bootloader after relocking it

Yes, I read in another forum about an user has "discovered this re-lock method", and asked in Motorola's forum about the status code and the meanings and the answer was something like this
Status code 0 =locked with warranty
Status code 3 = unlocked without warranty
Status code 2= relocked but also without warranty
And I don't remember very well if status code 1 is for developers edition phones and it means relocked but with warranty..

I have only one question: After travarmos the device, we can update via OTA?
Hugs!
No issue on OTA with Locked or unlocked bootloader.
If rooted there's issue

Yup, as @kumeipark stated, no issue with taking OTA just because you are unlocked.
Just remember, rooting is a software change on your phone, so that will mess up taking OTAs as you've modified the /system directory.
In the case of unlocking the bootloader, that is a physical change in the phone firmware itself. It does not modify the OS software in any way, hence the OTA will take since you didn't modify the OS in any way.
The reason the OTA's check for modification is to prevent bricking a device that may have modified the OS software in some way which could result in a device that boot loops. This way, they know for a fact that the software is either completely stock or it's been modified which means that the OTA cannot patch the software correctly, especially if some system files have been modified or removed altogether (or bloat apps as well).
Thanks!
Thank's guy's!

I read your post months ago before having my phone updated, and I read it now after having updated On The Air.
What do you mean with "will mess up taking OTA" exactly?
It goes without saying you can't get OTA updates if you're running on modified version of OS; but if you have an unlocked bootloader as mine and you are on an official motorola build, you can still get OTA and update them without problems.
Here's the story:
- bought my xt925 last year and it mounted the build 4.1.2 the one with the camera shutter always (and forced) on, by the grace of American lawmakers (I am in Italy);
- since the 4.1.2 is slow as hell, I unlocked the bootloader early in january this year and put on the cyanogen something;
- I tried the cyanogen mod for two months then I flashed back this one: Android 4.1.2
Blur_Version.98.21.26002.XT925.Orange.en.GB
- on october 7th I got the OTA message to uptade to kitkat 4.4.2, then I updated the phone and now I am working on 4.4.2.
There are a couple of things I don't get: how do I relock bootloader without flashing 4.1.2 and what happens if I do a factory reset from recovery.

Uh, reflashing doesn't lock the boot loader. Also, I never said you can't take an OTA with an unlocked bootloader. I said you won't be able to take an OTA if you are rooted, since that messes with the system files.
As you know, you unlock the XT925 via the Moto tools. As for relocking it, I have no idea. I do know with the Nexus 7, flashing a new image doesn't relock it. I have to actually do it via the ADB command, so I believe it's the same thing with the XT925. You get an unlock code from Motorola and you use that to unlock the bootloader and have to use the command to relock it.
Doing a factory reset won't relock it.
Looks like mfastboot check patitions checksum/size with GPT partition (patition_signed)

[Q] Help my Nexus is weirdly busted!

My N7 crashed whilst I was playing Angry Birds Epic (no I'm not blaming this app for the damage) and showed the boot animation and was stuck there.
I rebooted (by holding power button for long time) and then it decided to wait at the google screen, then to black screen and reboot, constantly.
I thought re-flash it, that'll fix it, nope would not flash ANY rom, I thought it might be an issue with TWRP so I tried to update it, no joy! Fastboot would go through the motions of flashing the recovery but it ever ever happened.
I decided to boot the newest TWRP without flashing and still no joy flashing ANY rom. So I decided to try wiping the device, I can't. it seems like the whole device is write protected. Yes it is unlocked!
Can anyone suggest what to do next, I miss my N7!
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

That is odd. Maybe try another USB Cable. OR On a Different Computer. If that fails i think your only option is NV FLASH. But there are some Pre required task and info. I just seen your post and thought i would replay. I do not mess with my Nexus 7 enough anymore to give you any Step by steps. But its all been Written on here over and over. I Have read about your situation before. Sorry someone with more knowledge has not spoken up to guide you better.
Good Luck.

It's very odd, it's definitely an issue with the tablet and not the pc or usb cable as that has been ruled out.
NV FLASH? what is this.
Any help is appreciated, I miss my tablet.
EDIT: Looked into this NV FLASH, no joy when flashing a recovery and bootloader is something my device refuses to do
Gave up waiting on advice and bought a new mainboard, anyone wants the old one can have it for free if they will pay the postage!

Another bootloop thread

So i've tried pretty much every tutorial out there and tried baking my phone and hitting it with a heat gun, 4core boot img,
my bootloader is unlocked and im able to flash any factory image onto the device but the outcome is the same where its stuck on the google screen.

Did you flash the special kernel that shuts off half of the CPU cores. If you were bootloop was because of the hardware issue then that is your only fix

I flashed 7.1.2 angler-n2g48b factory image to the nexus then I flashed the 4 core boot img fix along with twrp 4 core as well.
I'm unable to get into recovery and the boot fix did not work as its still stuck at the google screen for the last 2 hours.
