Bluetooth still half baked with the 2XL - Google Pixel 2 XL Guides, News, & Discussion

I had several problems with bluetooth after the 8.0 update on my Pixel XL. No audio streaming to the head unit in my car, which was partially solved after the September and then the October security updates, and no notifications from my Fitbit Charge 2 after the October update. Just got my Pixel 2 XL and the same original audio problems are there - absolutely no audio streaming in the car with any app (Spotify, YouTube, etc.) AND voice input over bluetooth no longer works. On the other hand, I have Fitbit notifications back. Ugh.
Btw, the phone says it's still on the September security update and that it is up to date.

In the Google settings (can be accessed from google feed when swiping left on home screen and hitting the 3 dots in the top right), under "Voice" is the Bluetooth headset option checked or unchecked? I remember one time I had voice issues while connected to my car because the bluetooth headset option was CHECKED. Sounds weird I know but maybe you could give that a try for the issues with voice input in the car.

Thanks for the assist. I've tried it both ways. When I hit the microphone for voice input, the car head unit responds like it is ready to receive input, on the phone (in GBoard) it says "Speak now", but it never changes to "Listening" and nothing works. It just stinks.

Bluetooth calling / contacts in-car

So I took delivery of my shiny new Nexus 4 yesterday at work and as soon as I got in the car I paired up the bluetooth. Then somebody called me and the steering wheel controls wouldn't answer the phone. I've tested this several times now and that seems to always be the case. If I initiate a call from the phone though, it does relay the call over the bluetooth.
Secondly, the car cannot see the contacts in the phone. It just either tells me that 'no phonebook is available' or 'the phonebook is empty'. The car has never asked me for permission to read the phone book, even though I have unpaired, factory defaulted (the car B/T) and re-paired several times.
I had similar issues with my HTC Sensation when running 4.2 but the Sensation and car worked flawlessly together when using a Sense-based ROM.
Does anybody have any fixes for these issues? Not being able to use the car controls is a bit of killer to be honest. Not displaying the phone book is not great but at least if the car can control the phone I can use it to answer calls. I tried installing Bluetooth Phonebook but it didn't seem to make any difference.
Radio out car if using stock radio would really help here. I have JVC in the double din in the Saab and an eclipse in the wrx. JVC works as designed most of the time after the new update. Eclipse does not support PBA protocol. But controls work (minus pause on Google play app)

This one is still frustrating me. I have discovered that if I initiate or answer a call on the phone itself, it plays through the car speakers perfectly but it isn't possible to control the phone from the car controls.
I believe the problem is at least in part that I haven't had the pop-up on the phone with the car asking for permission - I did see it once after leaving the car but when I sent to activate it, the prompt disappeared.
So my question is still: Is there a way to force that permission setting, and if not does anybody have a workaround?

I'm in the same position
I've had my Nexus 4 for about a month. It worked fine 100% with my car till (coincidentally??) I went from the stock kernel to faux123's.
I have a 2008 Audi A6, which only allows voice - no option for streaming music across unfortunately. The phone paired, I Ok'ed the request to share call history, checked the "don't ask again", and I could make and receive calls from the car's controls. So far so good, just like my previous Gingerbread phone.
I don't think the new kernel was to blame - could it have been a google apps update? - but since then I can delete and re-pair the phone, I OK the share call history and "don't ask again" option, BUT the car's controls don't initiate or answer calls.
I went back to the stock kernel, tried Franco's, just moved to ParanoidAndroid's latest ROM+kernel - with all the necessary wipes - still no luck with getting the car's controls to work. I can start a call from the phone, or answer an incoming call on the phone, and it will play through the speakers, but it's a royal PITA, as well as illegal and dangerous.
So, I guess it ain't the kernel, but I just can't work out what changed. I have frozen Google+, Google Search, plenty of reboots and wiping the pairing off both devices.
I've done a good few searches, and it seems Google have never had a really clean bluetooth stack, and Volkswagens/Audis seem to suffer more than others.
But my Desire HD worked like a dream

I have no problems with bluetooth, calling or music streaming, in my 2013 Ford Focus using Ford SYNC. I'm stock 4.2.2.
Check tune2air BT adapter from viseeousa.com. My mom let me use her car and I want to stream music in it but I can't seem to do it in her car. So I found a solution, bought the WMA3000A with built-in AMI cable and i have BT steaming, and able to control, read, ,display music using original steering wheel and head unit controls. You can also check and try the 30pin WMA1000 model which plugs into any 30pin iPod integration cable.

Bluetooth Google Navigation Voice Output Problem

Not sure if this has been discussed on XDA before - couldn't find it in search - but problem is this:
When I have BT activated on the N6P along with Google Maps Nav, the sound output (voice directions) is either:
a. When phone is set to BT stream music = sound command is partially cutoff at the beginning -or
b. If the radio is on = No sound output is heard at all
Google Nav is set to output sound via BT under its settings.
This also happened on my OnePlus One.
I thought I had read somewhere that this happen because of the BT format that Android sends to the car's audio system is incompatible.
Any thoughts?
Mine works fine in my car when playing Spotify and Maps at the same time. It lowers the volume and then speaks the command and raises the volume back up again. If it does the same with two devices, I'd guess it's related to the car not the phone.

Low phone speaker volume on BT

Hi folks,
I have an unrooted, stock N6P on Android 6.0.1. which connects to my car's radio via bluetooth so that I can stream audio from my phone and make and take calls via hands free. My satnav app of choice is Waze which has an option that very few other competing apps have which means that even when the phone is connected to the car via bluetooth the TTS voice navigation instructions are still played through the phone's speakers rather than through the car radio. Certainly TT Go and Google Maps Nav both play all sounds via bluetooth when connected.
There seems to be a problem whereby for no apparent reason every so often when this option is enabled the volume of the phone speaker goes very quiet - almost inaudible over the car - despite all available volumes in the OS and in the app being at 100%. When I disable the option the speaker volume returns to normal when not connected but when connected all the sounds go through the car radio - so unless I've got the right input selected I hear nothing and I get no TTS announcements while listening to the radio or CD.
It has worked fine since I bought the phone last November and this is not tied to app version nor Android updates as since it's gone quiet I've tried installing various older versions of the Waze app (previous versions which didn't show any problem) and I hadn't and haven't installed an Android update since some weeks before. Nevertheless the volume has dropped and I can't find a way to turn it back up again. From Waze's support forums it does seem to be a problem prevalent on Nexus devices though.
Is there another setting in Android somewhere, not for bluetooth volume but for phone speaker volume when connected via bluetooth?
Many thanks!
It's an issues i think. Lot of people have it. Try factory reset.

Google server side bluetooth fix?!?

So yea, Droid Life has an article up saying Google fixed bluetooth for everyone with a change at their end and we don't need an update. Thought it would be worth a chuckle to post it here.
http://www.droid-life.com/2017/03/24/google-pixel-bluetooth-issues/
Actually, I suppose it is possible. Certainly our phones talk to Google a lot. Perhaps something in that process was crashing/turning off Bluetooth.
the chopping and skipping the day I read it had stopped but then music just randomly stopped playing turned off headset and turned back on and the choppiness is back so I don't know how they control the bluetooth
I have yet to have a single Bluetooth issue since I bought my Pixel XL back in what, November?
Sorry to hear that so many others are, though.
My stereo is a Kia Optima EX 2015 Infinity if that helps anyone.
And my aptX device is a Velodyne vFree.
I have not had any trouble either. Not in my Hyundai Elantra and then my new a Kia Niro. Nor with my Sena Comm system for my motorcycle helmet.
I've had this issue since day one,
https://youtu.be/3QWtvuaxlKI
I updated with current APK and issue still hasn't been resolved. This sucks.
In my 2015 Subaru WRX (stock, crappy radio) the Pixel XL will never automatically connect. I have to go into the radios menu and "select" the phone for it to connect. Once I've done that it tends to stay connected, but then I get occasional audio skips every other track.
This did not happen with my Nexus 6P :/
The "fix" hasn't worked for me. I even got the v7.1.2 OTA this morning and playing music over BT still skips. Sigh.
That wasn't the bluetooth issue they are referring to. They are talking about the issue where bluetooth randomly turns off.
Bt skips for me on my power beats but not my radio

I just got my Pixel XL 2 days ago, but the bluetooth streaming works great to all of my devices (Creative C100, UE Boom2, Audi S4 B&O).

Anyone else having issues w/ bluetooth not providing media audio option?

Have this issue w/ the S7, note7 and now this s8+. The S5, S6 works, note5, etc. Exact same results with the phones that do not work.
In my other cars it works fine so I know its my Kia but I don't have any idea how I can rectify this. Called the tech at Kia and he said they've not tested the note 7 and may never as the car is a few years old so It looks like I'm on my own here. On my 2013 Kia optima w/ navi I do not get media audio so only BT that works is the phone. It will show the first song sometimes on pandora (Streaming audio, NOT pandora app radio) but never will update after that. All audio always comes from phone speaker. I can change songs from the stereo but that's it. Totally useless. Works fine in my other cars and my BT radio in my garage so it's a problem w/ my Kia but WTF?? My note 3, note 5 and S6 work just fine. Very disappointing. My wife is running android 6.x on her s6 and it works so it is not that.
I had a ticket into google on this for my note7 but they blamed samsung saying the ROM is fully customized by samsung. Samsung says it's googles issue.
Anyone else have this issue? Any suggested fixes?
Yes, I had this issue! When I got my S8 yesterday it would connect for phone and the third(?) option, but not for the media option. Your car might be the issue though, if none of those phones work. Mine did show three options: phone, media en another one.
Well: during the car ride I noticed there was an update for 'Samsung Connect' so I downloaded that. After that update still no joy. I then proceeded into work, obviously disconnecting the bluetooth connection. Once I got back in my car at the end of the day the connection magically worked. So it might be one of a few things:
1. Update Samsung Connect (if you can)
2. Disable bluetooth
3. Remove bluetooth paired device
4. Turn off car and restart phone
5. Try again
I`m about to head out for work again so I`ll see whether mine still works or not.

Yeah so there's prolly something else wrong, as mine did show the media option. Sorry
Yeah it occurs on all 2011-2013 kia/hyundais w/ navigation and i'm sure other cars as well. Nobody wants to fix it and basically it keeps me from even using this phone.

I have the same issue. I have a 2012 of the same car, Navigation with Infinity speakers. This is not the UVO head unit. I can connect for phone calls and contacts, but all media plays through the phone. I can see the first item from the music app, and can only skip to next song (I haven't tried previous song as I am only streaming). It does not pause though. All audio keeps coming through the phone no matter what.
I've enabled/disabled streaming on the car. I've reset the radio/head unit. I've reset the Bluetooth on the car. I've unpaired from the car side and phone side. I've tried various combinations of these things. None has fixed it. I've mentioned the problem in forums here:

and:

Try the bluetooth app called bluetooth auto connect. I can not connect w/ my car on my s8 and s7.
Dave
I think it is samsung software. I paired it with a pioneer avic head unit for a trip 8 hours away to deliver the car to my friend. When first paired, it worked fine. Most of the time no issues. But for some reason after one of the rest stops (turned car off) I ran into that issue. When you go into BT settings in the phone, the media option was grayed out.
Only way to fix it was to forget the device, and repair it. It happened a few times on the way over.
Now that my friend has the car, he has no issues and streams with his Moto Z.
I have another issue with my car. The phone connects to Bluetooth but I can't navigate thought my music folder within the car system. Previously I had no issue with S7 edge and iPhone 7 plus. This is driving me crazy considering that Android auto just sucks with music playback. Most of the time audio apps I use (Spotify / Google play music) seems to do not work properly.

I need to toggle off and on the bluetooth 2-3 times for it to connect to media audio. Call audio goes on every time, it is a pain to connect this way every time. It worked perfectly until the first Nougat update.
That certainly isn't the case for kia/hyundais and a few other cars produced around 2011-2014. What make/model is your car?
Did you resolve this? I think I might have seen your post in the samsung forums. I have a 2013 Optima with Nav and having the exact same issue. I've done everything in the samsung forums to no effect. TIA.

Yes, bluetooth auto connect
I have the same issue with a Civic. With S2, it paired fine, but contacts only synced like 200 of them. Music info displayed.
With S8, imports all contacts fine, syncs music fine, but no music metadata. I would like to see artist name, track and album on screen.
All apps I have tried do not work
My issue with the S8+ is that I cannot get my AppRadio 3 microphone to issue voice commands despite having all the correct settings for Google as near as I can figure. The head unit works fine on my LG G3. I cannot for the life of me figure out what the problem is. It's destroying the phone's usability.
Old thread but I was having the same issue and found a fix that's been working pretty reliably for me so I wanted to reply in case I can help anyone here.
I was having the problem with my g6 and Hyundai. Phone connects to call audio fine but media audio won't play through the car, I can see the song that's playing and even use steering wheel controls to change it but sound comes out of phone.
What I did. Disconnect from the car, connect to another Bluetooth speaker and play music through it. Connect to the cars Bluetooth and you should get a notification asking what device you want to play audio on, pick the car. Should work for about two weeks and then you'll have to repeat the process.
Hope this works for you guys as well.

I think Google has some things to fix with BT. Hopefully it is fixed in Oreo and above.
