Yes since the only way to relocking this device is by flashing the firmware via fastboot it required wipe all data

Yes but most of them had bootlop, stuck in logo and any other issues so definitely not recommended if not wipe all of them

No. I have unlocked my bootloder right from the start and I have been able to install September and October OTA updates without any issues.

I just flashed fastboot rom to update to latest build since I was rooted and checked "save user data". All data was preserved and the bootloader was relocked.

Based on your opinions I thought unlocking bootloader won't erase data.
So I unlocked it and guess what? I lost all my data...
Wtf this Xiaomi?

You dug up an 8 month old thread, dozens of new threads tell you unlocking the bootloader wipes data since May.
Also why blame Xiaomi? this is a normal security feature of Android that Xiaomi were slow to introduce, it was more of a suprise unlocking did not wipe data in the past.

My xperia ZL (RIP) wiped data during unlock. Xiaomi is decades late in terms of smartphone life.

[Q] Nexus 7 unlocking bootloader will erase sd-card??

I am tired of silly issue of Baseband xmm power wakelock with my nexus 7 3g (tilapia). So I wanted to root it and install custom rom.
I'ld like to have ParanoidAndroid 3.68 (another question: I am willing more features from custom rom and better stability, which rom do you suggest??)
My question is when I do OEM unlock, Will I loose everything? photos, songs and the current app back taken from "App backup & restore"?
I am having nexus s which has sd card option different that Nexus 7.
With nexus s, all my nandroid backup stay inside the sd card, and do not deleted when I change the rom with full wipe.
Will it be the same case in Nexus 7? If I want to change the PA rom to other, photos, and docs will be deleted everytime?
Google has answered to no sd card, and said that it will remove confusion from user? but what about the developers and users like us who change the rom weekly??
Removed..
To be sure - you can anytime copy everything from sd card to computer and if anything bad will happen you can return it to sd card back.

I'm 99% sure it does not, but I agree with the idea of backing it up before doing it in case it does.

When you send the command a warning comes up on the device screen. This is well documented and not really a topic that is debatable.

The Android documentation says: (http://source.android.com/source/building-devices.html[/URL])
Unlocking the bootloader
It's only possible to flash a custom system if the bootloader allows it.
The bootloader is locked by default. With the device in fastboot mode, the bootloader is unlocked with
$ fastboot oem unlock
The procedure must be confirmed on-screen, and deletes the user data for privacy reasons. It only needs to be run once.
All data on the phone is erased, i.e. both the applications' private data and the shared data that is accessible over USB, including photos and movies. Be sure to make a backup of any precious files you have before unlocking the bootloader.
If after fast oem unlock you install a custom recovery like cwm without rebooting you won't loose any data.

Jesus, no, THIS IS WRONG.
fastbook oem unlock WIPES THE ENTIRE DEVICE. Everything is gone, just like when you first turned it on brand new out-of-the-box.
Unlocking bootloader 100% erase the sd card data,i flashed 4 nexus 7 and every time the sd data get erased !! If you talking about rooting and installing recovery TWRP without unlocking bootloader via MOTOCHOPPER MOD it doesn't erase it !!

You might want to just unlock now rather than later. It's not a huge pain and using a custom recovery is generally well worth it.

Agreed. Unlock sooner rather than later... with fastboot oem unlock. You can then fastboot flash a Custom Recovery, and root via Chainfires's SuperSU-v1.55.zip flashed in recovery.
Besides which, the 'motochopper exploit' no longer works under Jellybean 4.3.

Android 5.0.2 OTA

I wonder... Has anyone already got an OTA update to 5.0.2? Google released the factory image on its website recently so we can do it manually, but I personally don't want to, and waiting for the OTA)... If anyone got it, you can share here p.s. already got mine and updated

You could be waiting weeks. Just fastboot flash that **** it takes two minutes and you don't have to wipe your data.

If you remove the “-w” flag from the flash-all.bat file in the factory images zip it will prevent wiping data.

Failed
Just got mine and it failed to go on to stock rooted 5.0.1. Recovery reported an error; not sure why?
I just got the OTA update but am not clear on what this release contains. I haven't been able to get my hands on any release notes? Is there anything big in this update?
Thanks,
Rick

It does on all encrypted devices.
Also you must ensure you have a fully booting functional device before locking. A locked bootloader and a boot looping device equals bricked device.

Thanks, I was aware that you need a functioning/booting/stock device prior to locking, but was unaware that an encrypted device would be wiped during the lock process.

Unfortunately you cant :/
Download TiBu that is the closest you can get...
If you download a custom rom that keeps it up to date, they will probably include the update and you can just flash over it. but stock rom there isnt much u can do.

Trying to undo the last steps by flashing back the modified boot.img and TWRP.
Booting into TWRP and it asks for a password to decrypt storage!!!
Is wiping the only option??

I followed the guide (part 10. How To Take An OTA Update If You Have Root).
Then after rebooting (before installing the OTA that is) I got a message saying encryption unsuccessful and I needed to wipe my phone. I turned it off instead and tried to restore it as it was before. Screw the OTA, I just need my phone back. I flashed back boot and recovery, is system.img or vendor.img the culprit?
Any ideas? Do I need to wipe data?

I really don't know what went wrong here, other people have done this with no issues. In TWRP it should be able to decrypt as long as you enter the password/pin.

I had a screen lock pattern, I entered the numbers that correspond to it (from what I read somewhere else, like a num keypad), no joy.
But then again, shouldn't actual booting into the system work as well? Why give this error msg?
I'm going to format then...
unless your super comfortable with ADB and fastboot, flashing things through them is never a good idea, you will screw up allot of the time. its always easier for the average user to wait for a ota zip and flash that. Or never root and accept otas.
Im not saying never use adb, just dont use it when its super important to keep your data

The only problem with that is even when an OTA zip is available you'd need to use fastboot to flash system etc to remove root anyway.
So I formatted, then set it up, then tried restoring my latest nandroid backup and now it doesn't recognise the pattern lock!

Thanks for that, although at first after reading the first few posts I thought there was no solution, luckily I kept reading until here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=63797741&postcount=34
I did that and it worked! so at least I got back my working phone. Back to square one (almost, I lost all my local copies of photos, with only cloud backup for the last 2 weeks or so) with no OTA installed. I may try it again at some other point or wait for a more safe method.

Note 3 - SM-9005 - How to root in 2018 - help needed!

Hello Gentlemen,
Let me try to keep this short.
I got a new Android phone recently and had planned to port all my app backups from the N9005.
As things happen, I ran the Samsung app for backup and did a factory reset before checking the same.
The backup made a fool out of me, nearly all the crucial stuff is missing.
So now I need to recover the settings from the post "factory reset" Note 3.
What would be the fastest and least painful way to-
a. Root the SM9005;
b. Recover the backup (XML files for tasker, Aquamail, Biz Calendar and so on);
c. Unroot the app and be done with it.
I need to unroot as the last step as I plan to have the phone loaded with a kid friendly UI and keep it for the kids for long trips. Do not want anything wary taking over it.
Any suggestions and help is welcome!
Thanks,
CKhurana

Yeah, I know. But a recovery is possible AFAIK until the free space is overwritten? Just like any disk based data recovery happens?
Can you help me with options on the root?
Thanks,

Well the simplest one without hassle is either flashing recovery IMG and rooting via SuperSU.
