Moto E4 sperry XT1766 not booting up after a restore via TWRP - Moto E4 Questions & Answers

Long story short, my phone only displays the n/a screen and won't boot up.
I got the phone from Sprint, and it is the Qualcomm version. (The box says that anyway.) I wanted to root the device, so I unlocked the bootloader and attempted to flash SuperSU. This didn't work, as the app didn't show after the flash. I then tried to use Magisk, but I received Error 1 (boot image patched by other programs). To fix this issue, I downloaded a similar stock ROM and tried to install that. I ended up just wiping all the data on the phone, including the OS. Luckily I did make a nandroid backup.
The phone currently has no OS, due to me wiping all my data on it. I made a backup of when it did work (said earlier), with all partitions excluding Data. I have restored it, but it doesn't boot up. TWRP says nothing about there being no OS on the phone. I can't find a stock ROM of this particular phone, but there are some close ones. (sperry XT1768 I believe.) If anyone could help me restore my phone or possibly provide me the stock ROM I would be beyond grateful. I would also be also be okay with posting any logs or things you need.
Thanks much!

This is the Boost XT1766 firmware :

I did a dumb and was rewarded
So, I ended up flashing the sperry XT1768 ROM that I had downloaded. Keep in mind I already lacked an OS, so I had nothing to lose.
PLEASE NEVER FLASH A ROM THAT DOESN'T BELONG TO YOUR DEVICE. THIS COULD CAUSE YOUR PHONE TO BE BRICKED.
Against the above statement, I literally had nothing to lose. I got my phone to boot up, and it has all of its functionality. Thank you for posting the correct software amarc78, I'll have to flash the correct ROM at a later time.
Moral of the story, please know what you are doing before you do something dumb. Use proper forums (such as the one you are on...) to do such tasks as rooting your phone.

Hmmmm, sounds intriguing. I soft bricked my xt1766 a few days ago and have found multiple fixes, but nothing that sticks. That above firmware? Took me two days to realize I needed RSD Lite to flash it. What was that RSD Lite? You play funny with Windows 10, no worries, I'll create my own batch file to manually flash this firmware.........WHAT!!!!!!! Why is there a multi colored ring saying "erasing" at the bottom and rebooting every 30 seconds?????? So after further research and "multiple error 7s" as well as "cant mount cache/data" errors, I came to another fix, lo and behold, im in a TWRP bootloop. Long story short, FML!!!!! Im glad you found a fix. Happy flashing.

I used this rsdlite, and it works on my PC with Windows 10. Just make sure you have Motorola drivers installed.

For the Twrp loop, try selecting reboot bootloader, then in bootloader, select start. That should get you into system.
There is a fix for that, I'll find the link. Some twrp build aren't wiping something properly and causes a recovery loop after formatting data.

You're just all over the place, kudos to your dedication.
Basically in trying to fix the bad key/erasing boot loop I flashed twrp and tried to format data/unencrpyt which in turn throws errors which require manually reformatting /data until errors are gone and then formatting/unencrypting again which upon rebooting turns into twrp loop. Then tried to flash no-verity, the twrp loop persists.

Used to have a couple of these phones .
If you're stuck in a TWRP loop
The quick workaround is to reboot to bootloader, then proceed from there to Start. However, you'll need to do this *every* time until the BCB is cleared.
To clear the BCB manually, issue this command in TWRP terminal:
Code:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/misc bs=1M
have you tried formatting data, then flashing.magisk?

[Q] After 4 1/2 yrs on XDA I am finally stuck! Bricked No download mode, No OS.

Hello my fellow XDA Members. I am stuck in a tight spot and after reading and re-reading some things the situation doesn't look very promising. I hope this is the moment that Karma shows up and I can get some help on this. Here it goes.
Specs - LG G2 D801 Variant > TWRP V2.8.3.1 > NO OS Currently
I was running Cloudy G3 Rom smoothly and got bored and decided to flash that new rom that is a 5.0 Rom all variants. Did the usual back ups and flashed it. Something happened when I flashed the rom. It went through the Aroma installer and then said "successful" but stuck in a bootloop. I tried it again and nothing happened. Then I tried to wipe everything again and started getting an E: Cannot mount (data or system I forget which as that error went away after I completely formatted data, wiped everything and reflashed Cloudy Stock. )
> Cloudy stock bootlooped and nothing is happening in TWRP. I Am using the USB OTG method of getting files on the phone and getting it charged but anytime I try to do anything (flash a rom, an older version of TWRP) it just immediately restarts TWRP and thats that. I have No OS at all.
> I tried to use one of the methods to get into download mode and flash a stock KDZ but the phone acts like it is going into DL mode (shows the little blue transition screen) but never gets into the ACTUAL download mode where the PC or flash tool can recognize it.
So in a nutshell > No OS > I can get into TWRP but it does nothing > No Download Mode > Don't want a new phone > Don't want to take it apart and try to short circuit anything if possible. LOL.
I am totally stuck here. I am done alot of work and even helped friends and family out with their devices over the years. I am just not sure if I need to consider it a done deal and get a new phone or maybe one of you guys know of something easy and obvious (please let it be the latter) I am missing. Thanks for any help you can offer. I Will be standing by.

I haven't thought about flashing a bootloader. How would I flash the bootloader if I can not the phone into either DL mode and or TWRP doesn't do anything either? Is a bootloader file just a flashable file like any other .zip file?

The first one I can not do as I do not have any knowledge at all of Ubuntu, Linux, or any of that. It would take forever to get a working knowledge of that software in order to get things going again. I would probably just have to either take it to a cellphone repair shop or get another phone before I could do the first link.
I have not tried the second one but it is a viable option. I was looking at it online and trying to talk myself down from having to do that. I would reallllllllly rather not have to take my phone apart if I can keep from so that's kind of what this post is all about. Just trying to see if anyone knows of ANYTHING else before I go taking apart my phone.
Can you describe more about "twrp doesnt do anything"?
Does twrp boot up?
Can u see/wipe partitions?
Can u install any rom in twrp? Does it finish?

TWRP boots and I can go into wipe, advanced wipe, and format data and it says it's successful. I can use file manager and move items back and forth from USB OTG. If I try to flash anything it just reboots TWRP immediately so I can't install any .zip files at all.
My guess is that your bootloader is damaged.
The only option i can see for you is that Ubuntu thing i shared with you. So, lets stop acting lazy and do what needs to be done. Dont scare since there is nothing to loose. LG G2 is unbrikable
Booting up ubuntu or any other linux os is so easy. And there is nothing much to learn. Trust me.
Go to ubuntu website and download their newest iso file. Burn it on dvd and boot it up. You dont have to install it, just choose "live mode" and it boots up. Just like that. Then yiu can proceed with tutorial mentioned above and it shouldnt take more than an hour from you. Its all typing some commands in terminal (remember CMD in windows!).
Just make sure to download the files mentioned in that tutorial before proceeding.

First of all calling people lazy is not nice. I'm not lazy I am trying to play it safe. I wouldn't want to brick it to the point to where I don't even have recovery and it can not even be charged any longer. I have Ubuntu on my desktop upstairs. I have used it a little. It's not that I am completely ignorant to Ubuntu I am just a total novice. Also the issue described in that post doesn't exactly match my situation. I am not in a black screen. It's more like a bootloop that I can not get out of because TWRP is not doing what it needs to do and I can not flash TWRP a ROM or get into DL mode at all. Also that post says,
"VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!!! You must use the img files that correspond to the ROM you have installed before getting the problem to avoid breaking your phone."
I don't have a rom on my phone soooo...
You didn't answer my question well. If on TWRP you can finish installing rom without any error, and you keep coming to twrp after restarts, that's another situation. Try this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2451696
But if you cant even finish install in twrp (twrp gives you errors or just restarts before giving you "successful", either you have problem in rom you try to flash or you need to build everything up from start.
That lazy thing was for encouraging you to do it.
And you cant brick your device. There is always a way on G2.
For img files: find them from last stock rom that was working on your phone.

Nexus 6p stuck on Google logo

I need your help, after upgrading to 7.1.1 the phone is dialed and restarted all the time in this way.
I would appreciate a solution, I leave an exact example of what happens to me.
OEM is not unlocked and debugging mode either because I can not start the phone
My problem is that it does not unlock OEM and I was not active debugging, the phone just let me enter Fastboot but at the time of choosing RECOVERY it restarts

Dude try Nexus toolkit my Wugfresh (NRT Toolkit) you have to boot to bootloader and use the application to clean install
I have this same problem. flashed MegaPixel6P, tried using the camera, and then my phone shut off and just keeps rebooting. i think /data and /system are corrupted. any attempt to nandroid backup or restore fails and causes TWRP to reboot.
Alot of users are facing this bootloop issue. So far no one has been able to figure out a pattern that will give us insight into what kind of devices might be affected by this issue. I have created this survey on GoogleForums so far there are very few responses. Please participate to help the community figure out the probable cause for this bootloop

If you can get to TWRP, you can just reflash via fastboot (or use NRT). You may be able to apply your TWRP backup afterwards if it is not corrupted.
As for OP, if the bootloader is locked, and "Allow OEM Unlock" is toggled off, your options are slim to none. If this setting was enabled before upgrading then it is still enabled. If it was not, you cannot unlock the bootloader.

Have you tried FORMATTING boot, system, data & vendor and then reflash? Format, not erase/wipe. Move your TWRP backup off to PC and try that. If you are rusty in ADB/Fastboot, then use NRT to do same in advanced tools. If you have a working recovery and your bootloader is unlocked, I would not give up yet. Good luck!

Yeah your problem is a bit different that others and it's worth investigating.
To verify your complete emmc, you could try this command in twrp -> advanced settings -> terminal.
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0 of=/dev/null
Basically doing a read test by copying the complete mmc to the void. It should give you a status at the end that you can post here.
By the way, the recommended factory flashing is by using flash-all script that is inside the factory image itself. And you need the latests android SDK.

nope. i enter the command and it does nothing for about a minute before turning itself off
also, im not some complete n00b, so trust me when i say i've tried everything. any time i restore a backup, once it starts applying just /data or /system it'll shut off and bootloop without finishing.

You never know the level of the person you're talking about eh. Just tought you hadn't tried the dd.
So dd shutting down before completing wasn't expected but now if I read again your posts, you said doing a photo shuts down the phone and that's quite typical of power related problems. Sh*t.
Could be the battery not holding discharge. Can the device stay in twrp with screen off? Did you try to let it fully discharge and charge it with a slow charge?
There are a lot of information in /sys/ or dmesg but it won't solve your issue.
Still under warranty?

Forget restoring your backup for now. You're not a noob, so transfer your TWRP backup to PC, then FORMAT each partition first, including userdata and then reflash using a Google Imagehere. Ensure you are using the latest version of ADB/Fastboot. You didn't mention you have already attempted to Fastboot flash the NMF26F image. What was your result then? The reason I'm asking is that the Google script erases the partitions- does not format, but running the script will tell you which partition failed during writing.
Huawei Customer Service!!
Had the exact same problem creep up on me this past weekend. I ended up calling Huawei and they are doing a free warranty repair on my phone even though I'm almost two months out of warranty.
Make sure you are on SDK 25, I had the problem synonymous. I have been hunted at Huawei and only when I had already given it I realized that I was not on SDK 25 and I know of some others that was the reason with most.
Whether it was the reason with me, I know tomorrow, the device is back and can be picked up,

Yes, the latest ADB / Fastboot is required. The rest of the SDK is not mandatory. You can get a minimalist ADB-Fastboot-Driver install from an XDA dev here.
Also, TWRP updated for Angler recently here. This update solved a persistent backup problem I had with the previous v3.0.2-2
bought it second hand, and the previous owner bought it at launch, so im just a month or so out of warranty. im trying to get the original receipt to attempt to RMA it. Huawei's IMEI lookup says its under warranty till april 4th next year.

[Dirty-Santa Root] Bricked Verizon LG V20 Please Help!!!

I have rooted many phones before without an issue, and during the root process for this phone, everything was going great, I flashed SuperSU zip in TWRP and rebooted, since it was the first boot I expected a decently long wait, after about 25 minutes I followed the guide's instructions for Verizon since it did say some Verizon users were experiencing long first boot times. I took the battery out like it said, put it back in, then proceeded to fastboot boot2.img, like the guide said. After letting it sit for an hour this time, I got the idea that something was obviously wrong. After multiple attempts with no success I tried to fix it myself. So far I have learned that on the fastboot screen it says my bootloader is locked again, even after unlocking it. I have tried flashing TWRP as a recovery, just to at least have a recovery boot, that does not work either unfortunately. So as of right now, all I have is a v20 that has no OS, a locked bootloader, no way of booting recovery, I can fastboot with no ADB, and its virtually a paperweight. If anyone has a solution to at least get back to Stock, I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks!

In his case we needed to redo from step 3.
I managed to un-brick mines after returning sadly from the Sprint store.
First, get to the boot loader screen and try running thru the steps again, especially step 3. You need to make sure you have TWRP.
Use this link to make sure you can get into the different modes (Download mode, fastboot, etc) http://www.hardreset.info/devices/lg/lg-v20/
Once you can get TWRP to show up,then you are good. In the mean time I downloaded "LS997-deODEXd-signed"
When I got into TWRP, I transferred the file to my phone. Rebooted from TWRP back into TWRP and flashed the ROM.
During my reboots, I do get a message saying my phone is corrupt, blah blahblah, but I just wait a few seconds and it will boot up.
Hope this helps.
I had managed to brick mines only 3 hours after upgrading from my Note 4. It took me from 9pm to almost 2am to get it back up again. I can live with the message about my phone being unbootable until someone comes up with a work thru.

Kinda nerve wrecking to read about all these "bricked" phones popping up after trying this method lol.. Perhaps I'll just wait until a more tried and true way comes out...
Dirty Santa root is not for the average user who has a couple of experience in rooting.
You have to at least have background on Hard bricking phones to fully understand what you are getting yourself into
For anyone that isnt on sprint that has "bricked" their phone. There are kdz's that will allow you to reflash back to 'stock". Someone had an issue with the kdz, but it was an easy fix. If you failed the process, it can be restored. Just if it doesnt want to boot, just lock and unlock the bootloader...
If your phone doesnt have a kdz, I know TeamDev is working on a custom kdz for such phones. Don't bug him if it isn't finished as I type this.
Anyone that can't get into TWRP, or has failed the process. Either start back at step 3, or if you have TWRP installed but can't get to it, the manual way to get into TWRP is a pain.
Keep your back cover off and hold the volume down button for ease. Now press the power button and as soon as you see an LG logo, let go and repress the power button. Its tricky.... If you get the corrupted screen, pop your battery out and put it back in quick and repress volume down and power. Usually if Im quick enough the first LG logo will hang a lot longer than usual and that gives me time to enter TWRP. A factory reset screen will pop up. Hit Yes twice.
Please help urgent

I've only rooted 2 phones, this is my 3rd (maybe 4th). I am on Sprint. Instructions worked fine for me. I did have one hiccup, but it was my fault, and I was able to root just fine. I've been running for a few months now.
I have not flashed any custom ROM yet, I'm going to wait for the next major version of Android to come out. The only mods I've done so far are Titanium Backup install so I can remove Sprint crap.

it means dirty santa root got a high posibility rate of bricking a device compared to other root methods for other devices and if you have no experience in bricking phones before then you're screwed if it happens to you
Actually, if you follow the directions, almost none of the problems create a true brick-- which means unrecoverable. For most of the cases, you might get a soft brick, meaning you have to back out, use a KDZ to repair it or reflash something else, or start over from scratch and try again-- but usually (maybe with some help from here) you can pull the phone back into a usable state.
I would hazard to guess for the vast majority the process works fine, maybe with a hiccup, but I've not seen many reports of a truly unrecoverable brick from this method. It's complicated, yes, and you need to be ready to read a LOT to understand what's going on, but it seems pretty difficult to end up with a $700 paperweight with this.
So i have been trying tonroot my sprint lg v20 and everytime i try and go to the phone on mobile terminal to enter id
Then enter the apply patch /system/bin/atd /storage/emulated/0/dirtysanta i get this message and i cant go to step 2 to boot into recovery
Any help would be appreciated: i have a sprint v20 and i wanted to know if i have to flash the stock sprint rom or can i just flash lineage rom following this guide? I have it running on AT&T and i want to keep it on AT&T...
can you please assist
Could you help out, please? I don't believe I have hard bricked my LG V20 H910. However, I have read and tried all of the unbrick info out. It seems my screw up is unique. I completed dirty Santa then went to flash a custom. in the boot between that. I get a black screen and cant do anything even download mode will not come up. My PC does make its usual noises when i connect or disconnect, but my phone does nothing.
Ok, I managed to brick mine too. It's a VS995, it was running stock 1AC. I used the LGUP tool to downgrade it to VS99512A, and then did Dirty Sanata and TWRP. After booting into TWRP I decided to try lineage OS with Android 8.0, I did not make a backup of the Stock ROM, which was very stupid. Lineage OS 15.1 flashed but I had no cell service so I panicked and instead of wiping it in TWRP and using the backup of stock I should have created, I just opened LGUP and tried to downgrade it back to stock VSS99512A. Well LGUP said it worked, but when it went to boot it would hang at the Verizon logo with 4 pastel dots. Device manager could see an ADB device and I could connect to it with ADB. So I did and read the logcat. I could see it was trying to update as part of the rollback, but it appeared that some components from Android 8x could not be "upgraded" to Andoird 7.x. There was a repeated error about failing to update SQLite instance version from 3 to 1.
The one feature that could fix this is if the refurbish function worked with any of the VS995 KDZ files we all have access to. But alas, none work instead we only get the upgrade function... or so I thought. Somewhere in my search for the past 2 weeks I found a modified LGUP https://forum.xda-developers.com/v20/how-to/guide-patch-lgup-to-unlock-features-t3652222
**Please be warned what I did was absolutely ****ing stupid, and it was sheer luck I didn't screw anything up.**
From what I can tell if you only flash ("LGUP Upgrade") the KDZ from the same model it never clears the partition it just adds to it. My problem was there was stuff from lineage OS 15 stuck on one of the partitions that was making the rollback to stock fail because it kept saying it couldn't update the SQLLite DB from 3 to 1. So no "upgrade" within LGUP would work because the upgrade function does not clear internal storage. But the link above is to a version someone modded so you can force a partition update from any KDZ onto the system. So I started playing around with forcing KDZs from other models onto my VS995, and I noticed when using the Partion DL function with non-VS995 KDZ files it would say something about the partition changing. All I can assume is that the partition layout is so different on each model and it forces LGUP to re-partition the storage.
**Again I state for the record this was stupid, and I'm only fortunate it worked.**
I forced Partion DL of H91510d_00_VTR_CA_OP_1110.kdz, then H990N10b_00_OPEN_HK_DS_OP_1017.kdz, then back to VS99512A_06_1114_ARB00.kdz, then when it booted it gave the Verizon hello, and moved on finally but the setting service kept crashing while it was trying to load the Secure Boot screen. So I yanked the battery and went into the boot menu and did the Factory Reset function, and it worked.
Lesson learned, always make a backup and don't be so hasty to use tools that aren't fully functional (LGUP).
Perhaps what I've done may help others, maybe I've found out how to reimage or unbrick our V20s. Or maybe I just got really stupid lucky.

Bricked A2017U

I'm not sure exactly what I did wrong, but in the process of trying to root my B15 A2017U, it ended up in a state of, I'm guessing, permanent EDL mode. The phone gives absolutely no response to any buttons or attempts to boot it (no vibration, no lights, just a black screen, whether I try to boot normally, boot to recovery, or boot to EDL), it does show up in device manager as Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 (COM10), but adb won't recognise it, and it shows up in MiFlash but any attempt to flash anything results in "cannot receive hello packet", "try to reset status" and eventually "error:The write timed out."
I've been reading through a lot of threads here, but at this point I'm pretty much out of ideas, and I'd really like to have a phone for work in 6 hours. Can anyone help, please?
Not sure how useful it will be, but here's everything I can remember about what I've done just so there's something to go on. First, I tried a few days ago as detailed in this post, and put it aside after that post. Aside from not being able to get to recovery at that point, the phone was working perfectly. Today, seeing the new Axon7Toolkit, I decided to give it a try. I managed to unlock the bootloader and get into TWRP recovery (during the process, it asked me for a decryption password and I hit cancel). I've done a lot of reading and searching since then so I can't recall the exact steps I took after that, but I wiped the device (I didn't change the filesystem or anything) and got errors, and then after seeing the "your device can't be checked for corruption" message I searched and found that I need to mount system, so I did so (not in read-only), and wiped again, this time with no error messages. I can't remember if I did anything else in TWRP aside from looking through the options available. After that, I think what I did was "Flash TWRP and/or root" again in Axon7Toolkit, and I think something went wrong at that point. That's pretty much all I know.

I think you got the "cannot receive hello packet", because your bootloader is locked. Using this method https://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/development/axon7tool-flash-backup-boot-recovery-t3514254 to unlock it, then flash twrp, then firmware
The bootloader was unlocked (though it may have been unintentionally re-locked somehow?), and MiFlash works with a locked bootloader, so I don't think that's the issue. Axon7tool also doesn't help, because just like adb it can't find the device.
Now, trying again today, MiFlash is working for some reason. I haven't done anything differently, but I can flash whatever I want with MiFlash now. But it doesn't really make a difference, because the phone is still entirely unresponsive, I can't enter recovery or boot in any way. Any suggestions for what else to try?

Hi, I'm the dev for the toolkit and I think I know what the problem is. Can you go into C:\Axon7Development\Axon7Toolkit\twrp and see what the size of the image is? It may have been a bad download. Either that or there is issues with the latest version of SupersSU if you chose the root option.

Ok so TWRP is definitely not the problem. Can you remember exactly when the problem happened, like after SuperSU was flashed since you mentioned using the Flash TWRP and root option?
I don't remember any specific details, but I'm fairly certain I didn't get to the point of flashing SuperSU. I think the most likely cause is me doing something wrong in TWRP (I was trying to follow vague guides mixed with scattered information throughout various threads), and when I did "Flash TWRP and/or root" after flashing TWRP, I think I got some error messages right away.
One problem I do remember is that the toolkit would sometimes say something like "device not found", but still try to continue whatever it was doing and move on to the next step as if there were no problems. Unfortunately I don't remember exactly when it did that, so I can't give any details on how you could reproduce it.
Hey, I had exactly the same problem. Are you saying miflash is now working (you get success at the end!) ? If so, I don't understand why it wouldn't boot afterwards.
If not, in my case, a computer reboot, switching to MiFlash Beta and switching com ports eventually allowed me to flash successfully B15 full package after 3 hours of cannot receive hello packet. You could always try full B13 (Chinese rom) or other similar packages to see if it makes a difference. You'll be able to revert afterwards.

So you're sure that your problem is not because of my toolkit? Regardless looks like now I have to fix the ADB check

MiFlash does seem to be working, I don't get any errors and it says it flashed successfully. I tried flashing B15 full and fastboot unlock from here, neither allowed the phone to boot.
Any suggestions for specific files to try flashing?

I can't be sure since I don't know exactly what the problem is or how I caused it. All I really have are guesses at this point.

I rebricked myself last night (lol), so I had to reflash full package, from the same link you posted, and here are some notes:
It seemed on first boot that it didn't work: usual three blinks of LED followed by a black screen
Second boot worked (and I now remember that the same thing had happened the first time I bricked my device), but Android asked me for a password even though I had formatted /data
From there, install TWRP via fastboot (and fastboot_unlock prior to that if bootloader is locked, it shouldn't be), format /data using TWRP, reboot, and you should have a working device
Hope it helps!

I don't even get that much, nothing I do gets any response from the phone at all. No LED when trying to boot (including EDL or recovery), no LED when charging, the only indication that the phone isn't perfectly dead is that it shows up in device manager and MiFlash.
You could try not flashing fastboot_unlock right away and booting first instead... This is the only thing we are doing differently, although I don't see how it could have an impact.
You could also try flashing this EDL package (B13) instead and flash your device specific bootstack afterwards.
Still no luck with anything I try to flash in MiFlash. But I tried reinstalling drivers with Zadig, and axon7tool is working this time. Trying to read gpt works fine, but if I try to read/write boot or recovery, I get "W: bad lba in partition entry 26" and "Cannot find partition boot"/"Cannot find partition recovery". I tried writing TWRP and a couple stock boot/recovery images despite the error, still no change.
Do those error messages give any new information that might be helpful?
Try miflash firmware from offical:
https://www.zteusa.com/axon-7#support
Not sure if this will help you but that miflash utility is a piece of ******** to work with I found.
When extracting the zip files there will usually be 2 folders in them, one is meta-something and the other one has the full name of the zip file, you have to select the full name one beside the meta folder not the parent folder.
Also Sometimes you need to hold all the buttons again and "restart" edl mode before the "hello packet" issues go away.

Thank you. This helped me. Why the *$*# can't the program just pick the zip file, or tell you which folder to pick? Until I found your post, I had no idea which folder to pick.

US996 stuck in recovery bootloop. None of the tricks found on internet worked. Help?

So yeah, that's the title. Stupidly tried to force my US996 to take the Oreo update by flashing the stock recovery (while using a rooted system) and installing the OTA afterward (which results in an error). At this point I started screwing things up by flashing TWRP (using fastboot) immediately after that (without booting to the system again) and ended up in a loop as a result.
Screwed mine up even further later on by using a misc partition-wiping command (from here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g5/help/stuck-twrp-recovery-t3587077/post71796008#post71796008) and ended up locking the bootloader + making TWRP unusable. Now, only fastboot and download mode works, and I'm seriously out of idea at this point.
I guess there's not much that can be done, but any help would be appreciated.
Also I made a Reddit post about this before, if it helps: https://www.reddit.com/r/lgv20/comments/ac6apr/got_stuck_in_an_endless_twrp_bootloop_tried/

I've already tried that when I locked my bootloader accidentally, and just tried it once again - doesn't work. The phone still boots into the recovery, with the "no command" error like before. I suppose that the phone is still trying to initialize the OTA update process at this point.
If it helps, flashing using DL Partition didn't work either. Still more or less the same.

Already tried that. My issue is 'no command', I can boot into Download Mode, and I can flash H915, US996, they all flash if I choose the Partition DL.
No matter what I try, LGUP reports my phone as US996, even after successfully flashing H915.
I'm stuck at 'no command' (without a recovery cuz I tried to get to it) and US996 apparently.

Strange. For me, the only thing that solved the issue was to purposely flash the wrong KDZ. I don't recall which one it was exactly but that's definitely what the solution was. Flashing the right ones lead to what you are describing.

Definitely don't throw it away just yet. I'm certain it can be salvaged. I even had to save mine using the test points and qfil at one point and I've been so close to throwing it away on so many occasions. It's basically impossible to brick these phones
I just went back and re-read that Reddit post by that guy. It's all coming back to me. I have the US996. His post was more inspiration if anything. I think what I did is download every single firmware I could find on lg-firmwares.com (both before and after the Oreo update) and went through them until I hit the "right" wrong one lol. It took me hours but I eventually got one that magically got the phone or of the bootloop so that I could tell move on to flashing something else.
I can't find it now, but I followed a post Reddit post like that, and I had to use a LGUP_Hxxxx.dll file, his instructions were for two others (which provided the DLL's for), so I stopped there, because of the missing DLL file that I can't find with a search>
My phone is stuck at US996 (even when I sucessfuly flash H915 back to it, LGUP still shows it as US99610f).
Do you think I can find a LGUP_US996.dll file anywhere? No. And this post looked promising for getting me out of the 'no command' fix I'm in.
Edit: Here is the what I tried, not Reddit, but here. But, no LGUP_US996.dll. LGUP_common.dll, no, that does not work either.

A couple of things come to mind
First off their only one patched LGUP for the v20
it works for all versions but maybe the H918 or Sprint LS997 model.
Make sure you install it in C:\Program Files (x86)\LG Electronics\LGUP or it will either read the wrong model file (if you had a previous installation of LG UP), or it will not be able to find the model file at all.

After using the H915_10e.kdz you have to flash the Full H910 rom on the phone
https://forum.xda-developers.com/v20/how-to/root-h910-v10m-t3664500
your choices are the rooted 10r rom or the unrooted 10q Stock rom
I also posted a back to stock Oreo 20G rom here > https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=1322778262903991071
Be sure and use TWRP for Oreo to flash it
After flashing those be sure and Format Data / Clear Cache and reboot
Damn....getting the right dll was also part of what I did IIRC. It's too bad it was such a long time ago else I'd have a more clear recollection of the exact steps I took. All I can say for sure, is that if you don't give up, you'll eventually stumble on the right solution.
Thank you for the suggestions.
This is the sequence I just did again as per your suggestion.
Install Patched LGUP (Phone recognized as US996 cuz I flashed that a while ago)
Flashed: H91510e_00_VTR_CA_OP_1205.kdz
Phone reboots to 'no command', injured reclining robot 'quick flashing'
At this point, both adb and fastboot do not see any devices.
End of story. I'm unable to sideload or flash the *.zip files, factory reset, wipe cache, all these options are not available to me due to 'no command' and no access to recovery, adb nor fastboot.
No matter which KDZ I flash, I only get 'no command', and I can always go into download mode.
Thanks again for the tips. I'm sure something will happen.

A couple of things come to mind
First off their only one patched LGUP for the v20
it works for all versions but maybe the H918 or Sprint LS997 model.

Thank you for the suggestions.
This is the sequence I just did again as per your suggestion.
Install Patched LGUP (Phone recognized as US996 cuz I flashed that a while ago)
Flashed: H91510e_00_VTR_CA_OP_1205.kdz
Phone reboots to 'no command', injured reclining robot 'quick flashing'
At this point, both adb and fastboot do not see any devices.

I have never seen the screen or error you described. Having a total of 4 v20 I thought I had seen everything.. guess not

I wonder if this might work for you:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/v20/how-to/9008-test-t3855777/page13
It's an annoying process to have to go through but I revived mine when it was completely bricked (I couldn't even get as far as you because the phone wouldn't even turn on).
couple of thing that may help
No command screen is stock recovery being confused.
Try doing a factory reset using the volume - and power method (hold volume -, press power until the screen turns on, then tap power repeatedly until the menu appears)
