No Google Assistant on Nexus 6P w/ Oreo (October Security Patch) - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey,
I'm wondering if anybody can help me figure out why I'm still getting Google Now On Tap when I long-press my home button... My Details:
Phone: 32 Gb Nexus 6P (Rooted)
Android Version: 8.0.0 (OPR5.170623.007, Oct 2017)
Google App Version: 7.13.22.21.arm64
Not sure what other info to include here, but if there's something else that could be effecting this, let me know and I'll provide the info.
Thanks for any help!

Was it working before and then stopped? Did you recently update your phone? Do you have Google Launcher installed? Language still set to English(US)? Try going through this.

I'm not 100% sure... I did a clean flash when the 8.0 September image was released and then dirty flashed October on top of it... I didn't think to look between, sorry.

I seem to qualify according to this site, but still no GA.

Just done the October security patch update on mine and Google Assistant and long home press to launch is still working fine.
Try going in and switching off google assistant and then turning it back on may help.

How do you do that? Sorry to ask such a basic question, but the only way I know how to do that is through Google Now settings, and the menu item that I'm thinking should be there ('Google Assistant') isn't.

That's why I referenced that in my reply.... when I go there, it takes me to the same menu as the Google Now settings menu, and there's no "Phone" or "Google Assistant" options.

Opps missed out a step
Settings - Google - Search - Settings - Phone
I am exactly the same build number and security patch version and it is showing there for me.

So your menu doesn't start with Google Assistant at the top, with Settings directly below? What is at the very top of your Google Now Settings?

What's your root method? This happened to me once before also. I was rooted with Magisk so I installed the add GA module. Quick and easy and it was back. If you are rooted with SuperSU then I would recommend uninstalling it with the uninstaller zip found in the SU thread. Alternatively you can install Magisk over the top of it but all the features like Magisk hide may not work. Another option would be to flash a different Rom. Nitrogen and Cortex are both good options and GA should work by default.

Rom Toolbox may be running into a conflict with the Pixel Launcher you flashed. I have a similar root and pixel launcher setup minus fonts and other customizations and my shortcut to RT widgets is broken as it will not create the shortcut on the home screen. I haven't had the time to investigate, but it isn't a high priority for me.
Have you tried a clean flash of the October rom?
- Wipe data/dalvik/cache
- flash your various stock rom images (bootloader, radio, boot, system, vendor)
- flash your root method
- flash pixel launcher and reboot into system.
- Setup phone, G Assist, etc.
- Install Rom Toolbox and desired mods
Lengthy process, but it may be worthwhile to contact JRummy, the author of the Pixel launcher, and sending various logs for analysis and help...

hello did you try to clear cache and data from the google app and reboot? that helped me.

I use Chainfire's systemless root method. I've had GA with this root method before... I'll research Magisk (I've read a little about it, but not enough to be comfortable to jump into it yet) if I'm not able to find another solution. Thank you for your suggestion.

RRO Layers on the Moto G 2015

It would seem that the RRO layers themes do work on the Marshmallow stock ROM. After hearing about Marshmallow supporting it by default, i decided to see if it actually works on the Stock Marshmallow ROM. As far as I can tell, the only thing that doesn't work for me is the soft reboot after selecting the desired layer and applying it. :victory:
Update - If after uninstalling certain layers, the theme doesn't change back to normal, then using a file explorer, go to system/vendor/overlays and delete all the contents in the folder.
Will this work in moto g turbo too running marshmallow?
I read a post in x play page that using two themes same time results in bootloop

I do not know.. It should work.. But you might want to make a backup of your rom and data in recovery before applying a layers theme.

This has always been an issue with RRO, if you apply some things that overlap what they do. Not exclusive to Moto X or any device, in the right combination it will bootloop, but you should be able to boot into safe mode, or via the TWRP file manager, and remove the offending APK's from /system/vendor/overlay, and reboot and the phone will be happy again.
Of course you can always backup and restore a nandroid, but layers was designed so this shouldn't ever be necessary.
Make a tutorial mate.

I'm not new to the rooting community. I'm only new to RRO. I've tried it on my old phone and i ended up crashing everything on my phone.. (Not moto) it was an asus zenfone. Since then i haven't tried layers. Given the fact that mm is supporting rro layers natively has piqued my interest for it, so was inquisitive abt it. Thanks mate.

I have busybox installed. I think the problem is that can't reboot correctly. When I reboot it seems it always does a softboot. The notifications remain, the recent apps too. Also some tweaks I made on gravity box (MM) that require reboot aren't applied.
By the way, sorry for my English, I'm Italian.

i also had the same problem because i installed busybox in "system/bin" but after installing busybox in "system/xbin" layers are working perfectly. I'm also using xposed & gravitybox.
It worked! Thank you! I didn't read correctly the first time (missed that "x"). The Gravity Box problem is still there (as expected) but i don't think this is the right place in the forums to talk about that. I hope to find a solution soon

[Guide] [Easy] THE G-Pixel experience! (Cyanogenmod 14 | Google Assistant | MORE)

Hello!
I was feeling helpful today so I decided to create a Guide on how to make your Oneplus X as similar as possible to the new Google Pixel phones, software wise.
So here we go:
Requirements
Code:
[LIST=1]
[*]Oneplus X (You never know)
[*][URL="http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-x/general/guide-update-bootloader-firmware-to-t3478917"][B]New Bootloader[/B][/URL]
[*][URL="https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/guide-onyx-how-to-unlock-bootloader-install-custom-recovery-root-take-efs-backup-more.401713/"]Unlocked Bootloader[/URL]
[*][URL="https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/guide-onyx-how-to-unlock-bootloader-install-custom-recovery-root-take-efs-backup-more.401713/"]custom recovery installed (I'll be using TWRP)[/URL]
[*]minimal tech savyness
[*][I]SD Card (Optional but RECOMMENDED)[/I]
[/LIST]
Step 1erforming a backup of Data
I would recommend you backed up your data because this process WILL wipe it.
Here is a guide on how to backup your device
Step 2: Downloading ZIPs
Okay, so here is the annoying part, downloading the actual ZIPs that we're going to be installing on your device. I'll do the hard part, finding all the links
Rom: Recommended version
If you are using my recommended version (first link) please make sure you have updated your bootloader to the latest version.
Google Apps (Play Store etc): http://opengapps.org/
Please check these boxes for the best experience: arm | 7.1 | nano
SuperSU: https://download.chainfire.eu/696/supersu/
Google Assistant: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=69074667&postcount=112"
Please download all three files provided in the download page
*Optional* Google Launcher / Dialer / Bootanimation / Ringtones: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/google-pixel-experience-launcher-dialer-t3478907
After you downloaded those files, please move them to your SD CARD. If you don't have one, just move them as far as possible upwards.
Step 3: Booting into custom recovery
This is probably the easiest step, simply power off the Device and perform the following action:
Long press the POWER BUTTON + VOLUME DOWN BUTTON until you arrive into recovery.
Step 4:Wiping everything
Unfortunately, because we are installing a new ROM, we can't keep all our data because it would conflict with the new version.
On the GUI of your chosen recovery, find the WIPE option and wipe System and Data. Make sure you don't wipe the place where you downloaded the ZIPs and where you may have backed up your device.
Step 5:Installing ZIPs
Navigate to the "Install" section on your Custom Recovery and "flash" one by ALL the Zips we downloaded. Please follow this order:
Code:
[LIST=1]
[*] Rom | Cyanogenmod 14
[*] SuperSU
[*] Google Apps
[*]The all-in-one ZIP that includes Google Launcher / Dialer / Boot animation / Ringtones
[*] Google Assistant
[I]If you are not sure about a ZIP, I would invite you to look at the forum thread's steps.[/I]
[/LIST]
Step 6:Done!
There you go! You have completed the installation process. You should be able to boot up the device and restore the backup. If you have problems. I'd invite you to look at the replies and if you can't find anything there, feel free to ask me.
Code:
Disclaimer: I am not affiliated in any way with the geniuses who created those ZIP files.
I am merely trying to be helpful to the average user who is not very knowing in this field.
I would also like to say that I am not responsible for anything that could happen to your phone.
Your phone could be blow up* and start World War 3, that wouldn't be my problem.
[I]*It shouldn't though.[/I]
Reserved
As of 18-01-17 this thread is outdated but should work
Will update it and remove this message as soon as possible.
So for your opion better pixel luncher or cyanogenmod? In your Oneplus X the luncher or Google Assistant have bugs?
Edit: you need to rewrite everything because in the mobile version is all a mess.
Looks great on my mobile browser thanks for this. Will give it a go when I have time. Side note this doesn't require certain Google app version?

Thanks for sharing this !

Additionally you can try the Live Pixel Wallpapers back-ported to ARM & 6.0 by another developer.

The guide recommends CM14 because it's based on Nougat. The guide will mostly work on the other Nougat based ROMs too but not M based ROMs

Google search bar

Hi all.
I tried to google answer and haven't found anything useful.
Is there any chance to remove Google search bar from main screen? I tried to disable app, but after rebooting bar is still there. Just inactive. Read somewhere that it's built into stock launcher. So only way to remove it is to change launcher? No other way with/without root?
Yes, without root you can only use another launcher. I can recommend you Nova Launcher.

Yup, if root, search with root explorer in system, system/priv-app /velvet , then rename velvet ,add .bak, like this velvet.bak or delete. I hope this helps, Saludos.
EDIT: is the only way to eliminate the google search bar that I know.

I tried and failed to remove the google search bar, too... I ended up with Microsoft Launcher and find it works very well for what I want. I have not used Nova launcher for about 10 years I would say so I have no ideas on it now. But you could do worse than MS Launcher.
Don't over complicate things and be stubborn about staying on stock launcher. Nova is a great alternative, and I'm sure there are others out there as well. Apart from solving this particular issue you will have much more control of your home screens and app drawer.

Ok Google not work, Voice Match greyed out.

I'm using G9750 ASJU release, rooted with Magisk.
I checked that Ok Google cannot accept my voice, and then check in google assistant... Voice Match is greyed out.
Already using English US as language
Already set text to speech to Google
and Assistant to Google.
Wiped cache and dalvick too.
Reinstalling Google Search app.
Still cannot make it enable, still grey out.
Anyone can help with some infos ?
Hope can fix it by not re flashing the phone.
Thank You.

No... not using any themes.
And just try with reflash the rom.... initial setup, installing google search... and Ok Google, still grey out.
search with google, so many people have this issues and some fixes with set all language to English US or UK, but not solved for me.
So, right now, i live with that... using Bixby, until next update.

I am not sure if this will work, but when i had a Huawei Mate 20 pro this method was the only thing that got it working correctly.
Disable assistant
Enable assistant
Update from playstore
Reboot
Retrain and set up assistant.
Fingers crossed for you.

Already try it...
what to update from playstore ? because all already latest update, so no update available.
after reboot i still get greyed out and "retrain" menu also can be select / run.
Is it because I'm using CHC rom on TGY ?

When i disabled the app it restored to factory installed version, so after enabling it again you update it to whatever it is in the playstore

I got this same problem, any solution?
Edit: nevermind, I found the solution
When I encountered the problem, I crawled over many forums and after some time, I founded the Reason
Google app should be a System app so Access with Voice match can work
If you are facing the problem you must be on a custom ROM with Pico Gapps installed. If yes, the Pico GApps package doesn’t include Google app so it will not be installed as a System app.
If your smartphone is old and came with the Older Android versions then the chances are that Google app didn’t came as System app by default.

Thank you so much sir. This solution works great. I installed instead of the pico, the nano gapps which has google app as system app and now everything works.

Not to intrude but I am having the same issue on my note 20 ultra and I use #hex.
Is that an issue?

(GUIDE) Move status bar click to the centre -Xposed

NOTE** After a week of using edexposed it was evident that my battery life suffered, as such please be aware of this trade off, for me it's simply not worth it but please read on if you're fine with it.. you'll still get a day but the difference is clear.
Xposed - Gravity box
Pre- requisites
Unlocked bootloader
Rooted
Magisk installed.
Process
------------
Download this: https://github.com/RikkaApps/Riru/releases
Install it using magisk
Reboot
Download this: https://github.com/ElderDrivers/EdX...6.2/EdXposed-YAHFA-v0.4.6.2.4529.-release.zip
Also install it using magisk.
Reboot
Open xposed and update to the full version.
Reboot
Download this: https://github.com/GravityBox/Gravi...0.0.0-beta-7_q/GravityBox_Q_10.0.0-beta-7.apk
Install it.
Activate in Xposed
Activate the Xposed manager too.
Reboot
Make activate the second you need then once complete
Reboot.
Once you've made one change your can alter on the fly
There's an image of what it looks like on my phone afterwards, I can't post it here as it's an edit, just check the thread
Thanks @burtonlax for reminding me that Xposed is still a thing.
It will appear off center as it's relative to the screen, bare in mind our cut out is on the left
If this thread looks odd, its because it started out as a question.
So with the latest yahfa canary and edxposed in App List mode with SafetyNet Pass enabled, safety net is passing for me. GPay will let me set up contactless payment if I want to.

So from what I have, what would I update?
Cheers man this is great to know.
Currently removed the clock from the status bar. Prefer it to on the left.
K-Klock may cause a bootloop so haven't tried that.
Short of finding a way to get FSBI working (which would require xposed - I tried edxposed yahfa, no luck) I haven't found a way.
Our icon blacklist does not have positional clocks, and the substratum theme I tried just resulted in a bootloop.
I badly want to put the clock back on the right side but so far I haven't found a way to do it.
Try gravitybox

Thanks.
The right side? Why?? That would look mental.
Take a look at my screenshot
Battery round the camera, networks on the right, would have been perfect to have the clock in the middle, why would it wasn't the clock on the right too?
Anyway nvm appreciate your response. I think carbon has this option and probably PA. I'll probably the up on one of them.
Cheers.

Have you installed xposed on Android 10 ?
There are several xposed apps I used to use but I haven't seen anything about it on this phone or my last one. The last phone I had, most the mods started to fall to work.
Personally I wouldn't go for xposed, should have put that in the OP.

? You decided that the clock looked better on the left?
never heard of it tbh. How did you install it? The chap above seemed to be having issues.
I've just come across an issue myself, my phone has two OS's one is carbon the other is oxygen, trying to get back to oxygen.
This AB **** is really crap. Just doesn't need to be this tedious
EDIT: Just flashed the zip from oneplus to both slots then formatted data in stock recovery. Back now
I don't know but it would be a nice addition for your magisk rom module.
Perhaps even add full date next to clock?

I agree
I'm trying to find the time which needs to be edited to move the clock.
Apparently it was changed to avoid notches..
Besides xposed there must be a way.
So yep gravity box seems to be our only way at the moment.
Added a guide to the op.
Sorry I know it's not easier to accomplish but that's avenue in 2020
PS: little off centre. It's already smiting me.
Added the date, looks ok now
I think it looks more natural on the left.
*chef kiss*
Obviously doesn't pass safetynet with xposed, but worth it for GravityBox and the stuff it enables me to do.
