Un-Carrier the Burden_Enable Caller ID Spam+Call recording+Data toggle+Dev info+More. - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Guides, News, & Dis

Hey all my fellow T-Mobile users with T-Mobile branded Note 8's ! I'm writing up this guide for folks who (post root) want to "Un-Carrier" their Note 8.
This guide aims to be relatively Noob friendly, it is also hands on....teach a person to fish.....OK that said set aside a little time and follow along.
Note (no pun) ....you will need a root explorer app (I use Root Explorer)
Here we go:
Removing T-Mobile boot screen banner:
We'll use the "stock image" So navigate with your root explorer to /system/media and
copy the files "bootsamsung.qmg and bootsamsungloop.qmg"
Then navigate to /system/omc/TMB/res/media and paste (overwrite) the files in there. Done ......Reboot now to see change or move on to other
changes and reboot later.
Removing T-Mobile boot jingle
I've uploaded a "silent" boot jingle....totally silent. For this guide we'll assume you choose this file. Download and copy the PowerOn.ogg to a
location easy to find on phone. Then navigate with your root explorer app to the file you downloaded. Next copy the file then navigate
to /system/omc/res/media/audio/ui and paste/overwrite the file there. Done Enjoy silent boot.
Caller ID and Spam Protection
Using your root explorer Navigate to /system/omc/TMB and find the file "cscfeature.xml" and back it up (can just rename to cscfeature.xml.bak).
Then copy the file cscfeature.xml from this post to that same location and then set the permissions for the file (Long press file tile highlit, then
press 3 dots top right and select permissions) (this is the method in the Root Explorer app to bring up permissions menu) set permissions to 0644 followed by a reboot
and Done, go to phone app press 3 dots top right, go to settings and toggle on the "Caller ID and spam protection" switch. And/or Call Recording
ENJOY probably more to come eventually

*******Remove the ".zip" from the file name of the PowerOn.ogg.zip so it is named PowerOn.ogg
After trying numerous things and searching multiple locations in the system for the "fix" for Spam Calling Features and thanks to @masri1987 it's working now.
So here's the "New" CSCFeature.xml that will allow you to enable [Caller ID and Spam Protection] and [Call Recording] thanks to @mdiaz33685 for the s8 csc file which helped this whole process. Again using a Root Explorer app navigate to /system/omc/TMB and rename your current cscfeature.xml to "cscfeature.xml.bak" then copy this file from its location into the folder (/system/omc/TMB) and set the permissions to 0644 Reboot and enjoy YOUR phone.
MUST BE ROOTED
EDIT 11/28/2017
Brand New CSC File adds CallerID, Call recording, Data toggle to Power menu and to notification panel, Push message option in stock message app, Broadcast channels and Callback number are also available in messaging app.
Hit the Thanks Button

Device Information on Notification pulldown and Lockscreen (Colors)
POST UPDATED 11/28/2017
WARNING: THIS SYSTEMUI.APK WAS MADE FOR/ON SAMFAIL VS.1 (DEODEXED)
I DON'T KNOW FOR CERTAIN THAT IT WORKS WITH SAMFAIL VS2.5 (DEODEXED)
This mod will add device information to your phone.
To add this mod we will need to "replace" your SystemUI.apk. So first step (recommended/optional) Backup your current SystemUI.apk, to do that we'll (using root explorer) navigate to /system/priv-app/ scroll down to folder named SystemUI and in there we are going to copy the (current) SystemUI.apk and paste it to you external or internal sdcard root directory (for easy locating) in case you have to adb push it back etc.
Now that we're backed up let's get to it! The zip file posted is NOT flashable, download and unzip it to phone or pc select your color provided here and copy the SystemUI.apk from the color choice folder (with root explorer) to /system/priv-app/ (At This Point copy it into the "root" of priv-app not into the SystemUI folder just yet0........once you have pasted it scroll down to the file (will be right below the folder of the same name) long press the SystemUI.apk and select "permissions" from the 3 dot menu (top right corner) and set permissions to 0644. Once permissions are set correctly long press the apk again and this time select "Cut" (scissor icon) and now move it into the Folder "SystemUI" overwriting the original file. After that just reboot and enjoy.
****Note at this time on lockscreen when screen wakes you'll see device info at bottom, and a second later the lock icon and unlock dialogue text will appear, haven't fixed that yet so work in progress. Also in notification panel 1st down swipe shows carrier branding among the device info (squeezed between lines) 2nd stage swipe down of notification panel re-hides carrier label.

Awesome! Thanks for this.
I freaking hate the tmobile boot lol
Any way of changing the actual animation not just the sound?
Now if we could get stereo speaker mod to work also that would be great.
For caller ID I'm using Truecaller which works pretty well

Root breaks the SafetyNet service without tripping Knox. So, pay, securefolder, etc cease to work until you're back on the unrooted image.

I'm not sure but I think flashing the CSC for TMO will fix it. Refer to the Root thread for exact solution.

This guide will specify how, better yet where to change the T-Mobile Boot screen, how to get rid of (or change) the T-Mobile Boot jingle sound, and how to get Native Caller-ID/Spam Identifier working.
Btw This 'Root' is Root, not Bootloader Unlock/Recovery unlock, so if like me you enjoy root access to make those small custom changes including Viper, Adaway, SPAM call protection etc then you may want to consider SamFail Root as I did[/SIZE]
Oh BTW this guide aims to be relatively Noob friendly, it is also hands on....teach a person to fish.....OK that said set aside a little time and follow along.
Note (no pun) ....you will need a root explorer app (I use Root Explorer)
Here we go:
First, a couple of my thoughts on this Very Welcome Root (Thanks SamFail Team Members/Contributers)
The 80% Battery Charge Limit...................This varies, meaning factually if you power off your device and then boot to download mode and keep it there (while plugged in) your rooted Note 8 will continue to charge (slower than fast charge though). I did this last night and started the day with 100% battery. Of course that is not optimal, however it is there and can be done.

Side Note Viper is working great on Note 8, I used the ViperArise zip and flashed with flashfire.
I also installed Adaway.

Anyway to get this modified for Verizon ?

Baller this method does work for Verizon. Just replace the csfeatures in the VZW folder not tmb for Verizon. Thank you so much everyone!
---------- Post added at 11:41 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:29 AM ----------
This also brings back Samsung cloud to my Verizon variant. It also brings the Samsung diagnostics to my variant. As a side note, my phone was bought directly from verizon, but I flashed it with the unlocked firmware I then rooted with the new method with no csc. Thanks everyone for getting this to work, I'd bet this works for every US carrier. Do you mind if I post this in the Verizon Note 8 Thread?

Lou does call recording work for you? I can't get mine to actually record? Everything else works as advertised, thank you for this everyone. It's ****ed how the US carriers strip these features out.

It can't install automatically without your permission (shouldn't).
My suggestion to get the update is Odin back to 100% full stock image. Then you can take whatever OTA is at your hearts desire. Then you know everything is so fresh, so clean :good:
Then we just wait for word on root ?

That's what I'm going to do. I hear a lot of interesting things about 4.4.2 - how it breaks SD Card access etc... I am VERY happy with 4.3 with the rom I've chosen and will happily await a Clean Rom 4.4 before I even think about 4.4.
I have 4.4.2 on my Nexus 7 2013 tablet and it's good - hopefully it'll mean even better battery life. Pretty happy with the 2x battery life increase after I've rooted. Here's to hoping for more in 4.4.2.
Fyi - googled and I can't find anything about 4.4 coming to Note 3 via Verizon. Back when I had Droid 1 and HTC Thunderbolt us rooters got ICS way before it came out to the carriers. lol.
OP, do you have a link?
I disabled both Knox and the OTA update in MJE by using a root file explorer (Solid Explorer) and changing file permissions to 0000 ("---------") of a couple .apk/.odex files in /system/app (followed by rebooting) :
ContainerAgent{.apk,.odex}
ContainerEventsRelayManager{.apk,.odex}
KLMSAgent{.apk,.odex}
KnoxAgent{.apk,.odex}
KnoxAttestationAgent{.apk,.odex}
KnoxStore{.apk,.odex}
SDM{.apk,.odex}
FWUpgrade{.apk,.odex}
LocalFOTA.apk
This allows them to be restored at any time by chmod'ing them back to mode 0644 ("-rw-r--r--"). I suppose this is similar to "freezing" in TiBu. The first group are Knox-related and last three are involved in the OTA, but it might be sufficient to only disable the SDM{.apk,.odex} files.
cheers
how do I disable SDM{.apk,.odex} files. using root file explorer. I found the files I do not see anyway to disable them?

Rename them to .bak files.
If I move the file to my sd card would that do the same thing as disabling them? Would it mess up my OS not to have it in my system file.
I do not see how to rename any file? Please explain the process of renaming.

I haven't used root explorer, but I know that both Solid Explorer and ES File Manager have a way to change the file permissions mode - usually by press-and-hold on the file name, and then select "Properties" or some such from the pop-up menu.
You can also rename them if you want as suggested above (but obviously don't delete the {.apk | .odex} suffix so you won't get the two of them confused) - for instance Foo.apk -> Foo.apk.bak and Foo.odex -> Foo.odex.bak
[Edit] Also: Some root-aware file explorers make you manually remount /system in rw mode before you do anything, and some take care of it for you. If your permission changes / renaming operations fail, it's because of that. (Solid explorer just does it for you).

Usually there is a menu in your file explorer which is brought up by long-pressing on an individual file name. I would recommend you leave the files in place and either rename them or make them unreadable (mode 0000) - moving them to the SD card and back will destroy the SElinux extended attributes of the files (if any). Then a couple months from now you won't need to remember where they are. They won't do any harm just sitting there.
Do I take out work apk and put in bak instead?
Got it thanks

If you have root you can download fx file manager and the root add on from the play store or a similar root file manager. This will allow you to rename the files you need. You can move or delete them if you want. All the custom ROMs remove them without issue. Another option would be to purchase Titanium Backup Pro and freeze the apps with that. That is my preferred method with a stock rooted rom because all you have to do is unfreeze them and then unroot to take the OTA. With that in mind I would heed the advice of others and stay away from KitKat until a root method is confirmed if you value having root access.
Edit @bftb0 beat me to the answer when I was typing...
Just changed it and the app became a blank. When I put back the app and took away the bak the app did not appear again it is still a blank what do I do to get it back in system tray. Right now it is a blank page?

There will be plenty of lemmings that rush to the sea, afraid that they are going to miss something by not downloading an update on day one.
So, wait a week or two to see if any of them make it back to shore with their root privileges still intact. Their pain will be your gain. You'll also have the benefit of reading review articles on-line that will tell you if there is anything compelling in the update; my guess is that your phone already works quite well.

Extremely confusing and vague language "changed it", "the app became a blank". also "system tray" and "put back". Huh?
Don't use pronouns such as "it". Nobody knows which "it" you are talking about.
It is possible that your file browser needs to "refresh" it's listing after a file name change. Sometimes file managers have an explicit "refresh" in their menu, or in other cases, you just visit a different folder in the file manger and then return back to (e.g.) /system/app folder to get the refresh to occur.
Hopefully all you are doing is manipulating file names.
Titanium will not work with Note 3. It actually semi bricked my phone. I was told not to Install it. The app whose name I changed then changed back is still there the original icon is just not there. I think everything is OK but got nervous not seeing the icom
I think the icon just disappeared. I first changed the name as you suggested adding bak. The icon disappeared but it showed a blank page icon. Then I wanted to make sure I could put it back so I removed the bak. After I removed the bak then rebooted. The icon never appeared again? When I open file manager and look at it the symbol is a question mark.

I learned my lesson on my last phone. It was a S3 with an unlocked bootloader. I HAD to get the update despite the warnings not to. Within 10 minutes after that I tripped knox trying to get root and the wifi stopped working. That mistake cost me $400.00 for the phone N3 I have now. Verizon was "kind" enough to give me $300.00 off any new phone despite my mistake. No more going down that road for me. Yes, I am quite happy with this phone, even with the locked bootloader.

Trust me it works fine and won't brick your phone if you use it properly. At worst you would have to Odin back to stock if you deleted important files by mistake.
I don't think anything is wrong with the system. It is OK to have a ? mark instead of the icon right?

[Quick Guide] - Enabling Hidden Features

Just wanted to share a few CSC features that are tested to work on the S6/S6 edge.
This is not my work, just sharing.
To enable these you will need root, a root explorer and text editor.
Simply navigate to system/csc/Features.xml and add the corresponding line to the end of the file but before the very last few lines that say </feature> and </Samsung>
(if this file does not exist, create the csc folder in system and a txt file within it then change the name to features.xml and add the correct lines and save) if this does not work you can try the same method with Others.XML in the same folder
*Make sure you make backups of the stock files in case there are issues.*
Enable WiFi calling in phone settings:
Code:
<CscFeature_Setting_SupportWifiCall>TRUE</CscFeature_Setting_SupportWifiCall>
Enable native voice call recording(maybe illegal is some countries):
Code:

Enable shutter sound switch in camera settings(maybe illegal is some countries):
Code:
<CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>true</CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>
Enable camera during call:

ADDED 21/04/15
Sort app draw alphabetically:
Code:
<CscFeature_Launcher_EnableViewByAlphabetAsDefault>true</CscFeature_Launcher_EnableViewByAlphabetAsDefault>
I Hope this helps someone out,
Big Thanks to this post for the info, there are many more in the original post but these are the only ones I've tried and have worked so far,
and IakobosJ for his help in the wifi calling thread
if anything needs adding let us know and it can be added to this post,
This is dedicated to the hard working XDA community
Thank You All
Theres also some nice tools in the play store -:- Be careful when using these!
Samsung CSC Master
CSC Feature Expert
(I own google so get a big cut of the profit made on these )
I've tried CSC Feature Expert now -and it seems to work well,
Quick tut:
I would backup original CSC folder first
Just search for the option you want to enable,
Select the value ( see pic 1)
in the popup - Input the correct value (see pic 2 - label 1)
(a few examples of values)
' RecordingAllowed ' to enable call recording,
' true ' for shutter sound menu,
' true ' for launcher by alphabet,
' true ' for rotation icon in gallery,
' true ' for support wifi call,
then click save (see pic 2 - label 2)
restart you device
Hope this helps
If only we could root, without tripping Knox.
I don't want to root my phone in fear that Samsung Pay won't work with a tripped Knox.
Nice to see you've put all of this information together
For those on EE you may also want to enable VoLTE. I know it's unlikely to be in anyones area yet, but they are rolling it out across the UK (Very slowly)
Enable VoLTE Support
<CscFeature_RIL_SupportVolte>TRUE</CscFeature_RIL_SupportVolte>
Enable VoLTE
<CscFeature_IMS_EnableVoLTE>true</CscFeature_IMS_EnableVoLTE>
Just a quick note that the commands have to be added before the

Thats strange as I've added mine after the samsung tags and all is working fine fine on my device.
Have you had problems in the past with doing that?
No. I saw the file header and noticed they're inserting commands between those tags. The original guide also has that listed but I guess it may or may not work.
Also I believe the file may get reset when you enter stock recovery so I'm assuming this should work as a fix.
1. Open the sales_code.dat to find your csc code.
2. Open the folder above with the same code.
3. Navigate to <code>/system/csc and you'll see another others.xml
4. This is most likely the file that gets applied after a factory reset/activation.
5. Make changes to this file as well.
*Make sure you make backups of the stock files in case there are issues.*

I would have thought it would have had to be within those tags too. Only found it didn't when i wasn't paying attention while modding it. LoL
Nice tip. Thanks. hoping there's more cool things that can enabled with this, maybe some S6 exclusives finds .

I didnt have it either . Just create the csc folder and make a txt file and change the name to others.xml. as the op states. infact ill post a copy with basic changes i the first post.
It works fine for me. hopfully you wont have any issues
I actually did have the folder. I was looking at the folder ". System" However, after adding those lines and saving it had no effect. Can you take a look at this to see if it's right?
Edit: can't upload the xml file.

You'll have to zip it before you can upload it... or rename others.xml to others.txt
I've attached a basic others.xml with all functions listed in the OP
and an original copy of the EE csc folder that IakobosJ uploaded in the WIFI calling thread
(it would be good if everybody could upload their original csc folders for reference and backups in case someone messes up theirs by accident.)
You can just copy and paste my others.xml into the bottom of your own others.xml(backup yours first)
I've had to do this as XDA's forum system seems to have changed at least one of the lines I've posted, and I've even tried going back and editing and it keeps putting a space in the middle of one of them, so use the upload if your having trouble,
I've deleted all but this file in my csc folder and tested it to make sure there nothing else it depends on - everything is working fine on my device.
But feel free to upload your for us to have a look at
im confused?
i can already do wifi calling and most of these things already without root

Ok, I'm finally on a PC so I had a chance to zip that file and have uploaded it. IDK where I screwed up. I'm rooted, I found the System/CSC/Others file and made the proper edits and then saved it. The original file was automatically backed up. The permissions were the same as the original file. IDK what I did wrong.

I really appreciate the effort but that didn't work either. I used the file you uploaded for me and made sure the permissions were the same and rebooted. None of the mods worked. It's really weird. I'm going to inquire in the Sprint thread to see if anyone can get these to work.
Unrelated do you know which folder I can find the boot sounds and camera sounds? I'm just going to delete them and that will solve part of my problem.

https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64350590&postcount=318
WP8/8.1 HERE Maps method working with instructions from @slavanap
WP8.1 instructions (SD card needed)
1.Do device registration to allow sideloading of apps
2. Install HERE Maps (microsoft.com/en-us/store/p/here-maps/9wzdncrfhw6b) from the store, and move it to sd card. Download installation file manually ( wpsnitch.appspot.com ), if you want to install it from SD card.
3.Install Windows Explorer, keep it on phone
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/stor...r/9wzdncrdrl4w
4.Sideload WPSystem_Folder_Unlocker_Release_ARM.xap(thanks @djamol and @contable),keep it on phone
5.Extract Install.zip from below , and put the extracted "Install" folder on the root of your sd card. The Install folder should have 4 files in it.
6.Open WPSystem Folder Unlocker app. Hit Unlock WPSystem Folder(sd card) button. It should say Success. Now close it
7.Open Windows Explorer.
8.Hit the app bar, go to "access folders",hit the +, choose sd card, then click the check mark
9.Navigate to D:\WPSystem folder. Rename the Apps folder to Apps1. Now open Apps1 folder
10. Navigate to {EFA4B4A7... or {6C28635B-... (I got the second GUID after reinstall)
11. Delete all directories here except Install . Then navigate to Install folder. Delete following 3 files from there: AppManifest.xaml NokiaRegistryUtils.dll NokiaRegistryUtils.winmd
12.Navigate to D:\WPSystem folder and rename Apps1 back to Apps
13. Navigate to the root of your sd card. Get into "Install" folder we put here earlier. Choose all 4 files from there to Copy.
14.Navigate to D:\WPSystem\Apps\{EFA4B4A7-74...}\Install folder. Hit the app bar then paste.
15. Go to your apps list and run HERE Maps. vcREG should open. Apply unlock.
16. After you apply the unlock, you can sideload vcREG_1_2_SIDELOAD.xap to have the app available in your applist for future use.
Q&A
HOW TO USE THE APP TO CAP UNLOCK
now that the app is open, you want to unlock all capabilities. hit the app bar, and tap "templates". here we see two options, interop/caps unlock, and full fs access through MTP. check your options, and click apply. Reboot for MTP.
HOW TO USE THE REGISTRY EDITOR
the main registry editor is pretty straightforward. put the correct path, the key name and value if its a write.
string: it will read as one string. writing is the same, write a string, no spaces, hit write
multistring: multiple strings are read as strings separated by spaces. to write multiple strings, separate each string by a space, hit write.
dword: it will read as 8 characters of ascii. so a value of 1 will read as 00000001. writing is the same. you MUST write 8 characters or it wont write it,so a 1 is 00000001 and B0000 is 000B0000. all bytes are hex, not decimal.
binary: when you read, the app will return 20 bytes, regardless of how long the binary is. if the whole binary sequence is 11 22 33, it will read as 112233 and then 17 00s. the reason for this is that there isnt a method to know how long the binary sequence is,so i hardcoded it to read 20. even if its longer than 20 bytes, you will only get 20 bytes back. i can up the limit at a later time if its something people need.
writing binary is also limited to a max of 20 bytes. if you are writing less than 20 bytes though, dont put the extra zeroes. if you are writing 4 bytes such as 11 22 33 44, then simply write it like this 11223344(no spaces) then hit write.
DO THESE REGISTRY CHANGES PERSIST AFTER A HARD/FACTORY RESET?
no. if you hard reset, you will revert back to the stock rom and any changes you made to the registry will be lost. you will have to make the changes again after a hard reset. file system changes, especially in the windows folder can persist though.

Work with me very fine.

@vcfan
So this is similart to what root access on android phone? What is the main advantage if we do this, what do we gain? For me on android the bes thing was customization of the look, and the possibility to block ads in free applications . The ads in windows phone aplications are really annoying when the pop up through whole screen, it would be great if there was a way to block them with host file or something, like in android.
I wonder if we can add an extra quick action. I tried editing the "AllowedQuickSettingsElements" registry but it reverts back to 4 as soon as I pull down the action bar.

What I did was,
I had Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 installed with developer unlock
I unlocked the phone with Interop Unlock but did not hard reset
Then i updated WP 8.1 to Win 10 TP and then i hard reset
it seems the unlock worked.
I can deploy ,
App data manager which WORKS
CustomWPsystem which works but cannot patch because Win10 TP doesnt allow permissions to WPSystem folder
I deployed vcREG: Lumia Reg Editor too
but since i hard reset developer unlock should be removed, so im guessing its interop unlock
The only issue is i cannt deploy io explorer, wphtweaks and accept colors app
Is this only bcuz of power tools ? IDK because i have VS 2013 on home PC and it still gives manifest file error.

[SUPER EASY] [ROOT] Change lock screen wallpaper without ANY apps or mods

Ok so I figured out how to change the lock screen wallpapers WITHOUT the use of an app, wallpaper picker or modifying the framework or systemui. It's nothing short of amazing.
PROS:
-NO image quality is lost because of a crappy cropper.
-NO application or modifications to the framework are needed for this to work so you can officially get rid of Amazon Photos
CONS:
-Only one wallpaper at a time
-Requires root. However this is done through /data where it is mounted as R/W. This would't be a problem if you could symlink the /data folder to internal storage or /mnt. I have tried a few ways on the HD 8 with no success.
Instructions:
1. Download your favorite HD wallpaper (as close to 1920x1200 as possible). I have a collection of dozens of stock Android wallpapers from various versions and devices at your disposal.
2. When you have chosen your wallpaper and downloaded it, the file extension should be a .jpg. Please go here and convert it to a .png https://jpg2png.com This should be done for all wallpapers. Changing the file extension is not the same. This web based tool also compresses the file to reduce the loss of image quality.
3. Using a file explorer like Total Commander copy the wallpaper.JPG from your download folder on internal storage to this /data directory:
Code:
/data/securedStorageLocation/com.android.systemui/ls_wallpaper/0
4. Activate your lock screen to see your custom wallpaper. A reboot shouldn't be required.

This is done on my rooted HD 10, but there is a huge possibility this does NOT require a rooted tablet. Why? Because it's done through /data where it's writable without root this is so easy I kick myself for not discovering this earlier. So if you have an HD 8, any model or year (NOT on Nougat) I need you test this.

I've only tried this with one wallpaper so you might be able to have several in that directory so it's different every time the lock screen is activated. I look forward to your reports!

Sorry, I was pulled into something for a bit. And then I became distracted making this lovely new lock screen wallpaper, lol...
Unfortunately, it does not seem we are able to access that folder without root. I tried four different file managers. When I finally typed the direct address verbatim as you provided, the device didn't say the folder did not exist, but said I did not have access. I did however notice a different com.android.systemui folder, which was located at /data/data/ , but also did not have access to this folder.

Update: Ultimately however, I was able to set the lock screen wallpaper, using the "Prime Photos" app. This however changed my launcher/home screen wallpaper as well. I then downloaded the standard Google "Wallpapers" app from the Play store and was able to set my wallpaper back to what it had been, and was also able to keep weird cat sweater lady as the lock screen image. So, ultimately same end result, just a tiny bit more effort to make it happen, but not really a big deal.

What a shame. Well at least this is a lot easier now rather than taking the time and effort to mod the systemui.
Ok so this is disappointing. I'll have to post a rewritten guide. This one is tough to explain. But I am pretty sure I did this through the Amazon Device Settings application.
I plugged my HD 8 into my PC and opened ADB in an attempt to access the directory. I was able to cd into /data/securedStorageLocation just fine. However I tried to make the directory com.android.systemui and got an error of 'permission denied', but not because of no root, 'the directory already exists'. So it's there, just not totally accessable.
So this has to be exclusive to Amazon, or a result of or a combination of things. I have literally found only two forum posts that mention the directory perfectly. However the website is in Japanese. Thankfully Google translate helped. The good news is, it looks like you can gain entry by symlinking. When I saw this entry, and sdcard was mentioned, I did realize one thing I did yesterday that I've never done before. Optimized the databases. Specifically I used SDmaid (bought full version but I don't think that mattered). So it occurred to me, it likely 'fixed' whatever Amazon took out of the databases. This is a wild guess though.
Reporting on the rom copied Stock ROM reporting that it was possible to download amazon instant video,
and copied /data/secureStorageLocation/com.amazon.avod to each directory / sdcard
· Then the following So evacuate the original and
create a symbolic link (su with adb shell and executed). Once done, restart
 cd / data / secureStorageLocation /
 mv com.amazon.avod com.amazon.avod.org
 ln -s /sdcard/com.amazon.avod com.amazon.avod

I went ahead and did a little bit of a rewrite to change the title. Just set up flash to stock and just saw the folder had already been there. I honestly cannot believe it's been there this entire time and I honestly can't believe I've missed it this entire time. Unfortunately this requires root access unless somebody can figure out how to symlink the folder to internal or external storage. though it is located in part of the data that is read and write, the folder is not.
Sent from my Galaxy S4 using XDA Labs
Update:
I just want to add, wallpapers can be in .jpg format, but for best compression, least amount of quality loss and if you have the same wallpaper for both lock screen and desktop, convert your .jpg to a .png for both (this should be done regardless of the wallpapers are the same or not). This handy, web based tool does exactly that, and compresses the file at the same time. This has resulted in my wallpapers being 100% in sync. https://jpg2png.com
I have copied my wall paper in png format to the location (with root access). However, it's not used as the wall paper or lock screen background, even after reboot. What am I missing?
In the meantime, I can use an image browser (Quick Pic) to set it as wall paper. However, it does not last. It may revert without reboot.

Make sure you are in the right directory/folder and all the way to the end of com.android.systemui:
/data/securedStorageLocation/com.android.systemui/ls_wallpaper/0. Your wallpaper goes in the '0' folder. So far as I know no special permissions needed. But it won't hurt to set permissions to:
rw-r--r-- (0644). Make sure you have a lock screen set
# ls /data/securedStorageLocation/com.android.systemui/ls_wallpaper/0
-rw-r--r-- root root 11833019 2018-12-08 16:19 Wallpaper-Florida-Keys.png
So it all looks right. Just not taking effect. I don't know if it depends on some package that might get disabled (I've disabled a bunch).

It very well may have been patched on 5.3 or 5.6.3 (whatever it really is)
The good news is that I can just set it using a image viewer. However, they do revert back though it's not clear what triggers revert.

Try disabling com.amazon.kindle.kso and deleting it.
I am on the latest 5.6.3.0, and copying to the '0' folder works for me. I had ads removed when I first got the device, so I don't have com.amazon.kindle.kso. So as Dragon said, maybe disabling and deleting will help.
Note that if the image is subsequently deleted from the '0' folder, the "7 cycling wallpapers" return. I don't know if they would return if some other method of setting the lock screen wallpaper is used, like the Prime Photos app.

Dragon, with regard to the "7 cycling wallpapers" in your other thread, I was able to use your post 2 to get my own 7 wallpapers to cycle on the lock screen. So even though I wanted your info on how to recover if I screwed up SystemUI.apk, I didn't need it! If you ever get around to it, I'd still like to know how to recover without having to reinstall stock, reroot, etc.
This post really should be put over in that thread, but I didn't know if you were getting notified there, so I continued to write here (and in another thread that I knew you would see). Thanks for your great work!

Sometimes it's easier to make a new thread and index them into one as you go along...I sorta have one started. Anyways, if the SystemUI fails when you install it, the tablet will still boot...just without any user interface. So you can just push your back up back to the tablet. It's tricky if you come to it because you have to keep your tablet attached to PC while running a few shell commands.
I have copied my wallpaper in png format to the location (with root-access) and used a website like https://convertx2y.com/png-to-jpg/ to convert between the image formats. Is it a good one?

Is There A Way To Change Stock ROM's Screen Lock & Unlock Sounds?

Hi all...
as I'm writing this, my MPM1 is on Stock ROM v334, rooted.
I notice that since few previous fw version at least, or maybe even since the first time the first MPM1 was out for sale, the sounds of the screen being locked and unlocked are still the same.
Is there a way to change them?
I mean it's not available now, and I know that this might be not easy either,..but since there are many experts on this xda forum, I wish that perhaps somebody could make a way/mod to do that?
That's all.
Apologize for my question that maybe is too noob.
Thank you verymuch.
I dont know exactly how to change the lock sounds but there is/should-be a way.
As your device stock-rooted, you can install Gravity box, so you can get wide range of customizations.

GravityBox requires xposed! ?
---------- Post added at 04:26 AM ---------- Previous post was at 04:13 AM ----------
For the OP -
There are magisk modules like 1. Twilight core, Pixel 2 audio and boot animation.
which can help you such kinda stuff systemlessly, so less of a hassle and more options to choose from.
Another way is -
Using any root enabled file explorer, all you have to do is go to /system/media/audio/ui
Copy the whole folder as a backup first and then specifically for your lock sound; either you can add lock.ogg & unlock.ogg
or replace them with any sound that you want
in the same .ogg format.
For lock and unlock.
Also first try copying into that by adding rather than replacing and see if you can change those sounds after a reboot.
Of it that doesn't work, then replace those files and reboot.
Similarly you can also add various other sounds in system/media/audio as per your needs for custom notifications, alarms etc.
Edit - the 2nd way would modify /system partition which might trip safetynet.

1. Do you mean "MidnightCore - twilight edition" module on magisk?
I tried to install that from magisk, but after install, reboot, nothing. Should be a new app icon on the homescreen, right?
But nothing. no icon. no nothing. Only on magisk it said that it has been installed, but nothing... seems like I did nothing.
So I uninstall the module from Magisk.
2. Then I tried the other method.
Using Root explorer I copy paste two .ogg sound files (renamed as lock.ogg and unlock.ogg) into that said folder after I renamed the original files. Then I changed the new files permissions into r-w-r-r (like the original files permission set). Then I rebooted the phone. Nothing hapenned. No Lock nor Unlock sound as I intended to. Infact I accidentally deleted and lost my two original files (the Asus' original lock.ogg and unlock.ogg files)...Would you send me that 2 original files please? I'll be really appreciate it.
Well I'd like to change them but if I failed, I prefer them than to have no sounds like now
3. Last try, I installed the XposedInstaller 3.1.5 apk in intention to try Gravity Box app module like Jaheen said above.
But then when I tried to install the Xposed framework, it said waiting for download...forever....so I lose my patient then I uninstalled the Xposed too.
Full of failed me this time

1. You have to use terminal commands.
Go to their support thread.
Link - https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/module-midnightcore-one-midnight-modules-t3762758
Download terminal app from playstore.
2. So umm.. I don't know why the new sounds don't work. Were they already in .ogg format?
I haven't done anything like changing the UI sounds so not sure, just added some sounds in ringtone and stuff. Sorry?. But mostly it's the same process.
3. You aren't able to download xposed framework from magisk??
Anyways don't bother because gravitybox can't change the lockscreen sounds.

1. I did check the thread. But I don't understand the thread Original post. The guide there is too few for a noob like me.
2. already ogg. I convert it from mp3 to ogg on online convert service by audio.online-convert.com probably their convert method is not good for task like this (?) I don't know. Will try it again more carefully with my pc and more proper convert software later when I'm home and see what the result will become.
3. okay I don't really have a good feeling using xposed either. it's good if I can avoid it.
anyway thank you for the replies and files. the 2 original sounds work again as usual now with files from you.
will report back here later.
