Weird issues with Camera and DCIM. - X Style (Pure) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys. Ever since I returned to my Moto X Style and updated it to Nougat, I've wanted to go back to using the Google Camera. But it keeps giving me the error "Can't connect to camera" when I try to take a video with it. Stock Moto Camera works just fine for video recording, though.
The second issue is that I can't access the contents of DCIM on my PC. Only my Samsung SD card storage shows up, and when I navigate to the DCIM folder, all I see is this:
https://imgur.com/a/7mMl0
Some kind of weird encrypted(?) file? I don't have encryption enabled.
I can access the contents of DCIM just fine on my phone. The only way for me to transfer DCIM's contents to my PC is if I move them to another folder like Downloads and access them there.
I guess this is some weird permissions issue that Motorola forgot to resolve. Now, I've tried the following fix from this Reddit thread (https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidQuestions/comments/451h0k/dcim_folder_shows_no_photos_on_computer/):
On your phone, using a file explorer (I used ES File Explorer, but any will do), create a new folder, e.g. DCIM2
Navigate to the DCIM folder, select all files and folders
Move everything to DCIM2
Delete the DCIM folder (or simply rename it to DCIM-old if you're paranoid, but no real need for this)
Rename DCIM2 to DCIM
Connect phone to PC via USB, enable MTP mode. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the DCIM folder.
Bam! All photos and videos and folders are there! ...and appears to be a permanent fix!

And it doesn't work. I still see the same weird "Camera" file even after creating and renaming a new DCIM folder. So I have no clue what's going on.
Now, as for the Google Camera crashing on the video recording screen. I've tried everything. Tried moving it from external to internal storage. Tried resetting the app, tried wiping the cache partition, tried removing all Camera permissions save for the Google Camera app, etc. The Camera app versions I tried were the May 2016 arm and September 2016 arm64 ones (4.4+ and 7.0+), as well as earlier versions. Dunno what's going on.
If it's a hardware issue, then why is the Moto camera the only app able to record video flawlessly? Did Motorola do something to the phone with the most recent update? Because I was able to record video just fine using Google Camera.
Any input?
Thanks. I'm non-rooted, bootloader-locked on stock Moto 7.0.
Maybe I'm missing some packages/core apps that are causing Google Camera to malfunction? I don't know which ones, though.
EDIT: Tried Open Camera and it works just fine. I can take videos with it and everything saves to the SD card, and I can access Open Camera's recordings and pictures from my PC. Everything Open Camera takes is saved to the DCIM folder in the Open Camera folder. But I still can't access the photos and recordings I took with the Moto Camera app.

Moving Photos

When I use a file manager to move photos from my dcim folder the thumbnails stay in my gallery. So I delete the .thumbnails folder and reboot. The spaces are still there, but the image placeholders are still there. This is a new problem with OTA 2.2. Anyone know of a fix?
I'm not sure what happened, but I was having trouble using my camera. It would close right after opening. I cleared my cache and uninstalled a few apps and rebooted and now my camera works and the files are out of my gallery. Weird, but at least it's fixed.

No media found

Hello,
Since this morning my phone doesn't see any media files. My sdcard is mounted and I can see all the files inside with a file manager. But when I open a media player it is telling me that there are no media files. Also in the ringtone menu I cannot see my custom ringtones which showed up fine until this morning. The same thing is happening in the gallery - no photos.
I tried restarting the phone - nothing happens. I have a program called rescan media, used it but still nothing. A have a nandroid backup from a week ago - I restored the backup, went into the default media player that comes with the stock rom, my albums were there, and then 2 minutes later i checked again - no music found. If I take a new picture with the camera and go to gallery I see only that new picture without my older ones, after a media rescan even this new photo disappears.

Check to see if you have a folder named ".nomedia" in your sdcard - this is used to control if a directory and it's subdirectories are visible in the media player.
Same for me,
Gallery dont found anything, but filemanager see everithing
I tried to change the SD, to un/reinstall gallery, update my CM7 rom, wipe cache but alwaysthe same problem...
When I use filemanager to open a picture, gallery load it in about 8seconds but cant see the other pics
Yes I had this .nomedia file in the root folder of my sdcard. I've read about this file and I know that it does that. But the most strange thing is I didn't create it It is dated from yesterday at 00:23. This has to be the work of some app.
Thank you for the help the problem is solved. And greetings from Bulgaria.
Unmount and mount again in the setting and hope it solve ur problem
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
thanks a lot
I un/re mounted SD in settings, and remouved the .nomedia file on sd root (don't know who created it....)
and my pictures are came back
thanks

[Q] Gallery issues

I have a few questions re: the gallery that I'd love some help with.
1. Gallery doesn't update a folder if I move a picture using a file explorer (Astro or Root Explorer for example). If I reboot the phone then the picture shows up in the correct directory. I'm guessing that restarting the gallery app would do the same thing. Anyone else having this issue?
2. Is there a way to have the gallery only look to one location for pics? I hate how it always grabs every image on my SD Card. Especially if you have Bejeweled installed. It adds about 10 folders of images that I don't want to have to browse through. Is there another gallery app that would allow me to set this if the stock gallery doesn't work that way?
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
Also noticing that the Gallery just doesn't update frequently. I thought it did this every time you opened it, but I guess not. Is there a way to force programs to re-scan the SD card?
SDRescan in the market works perfectly... and if you want to keep the folder from being seen in the gallery, just add a blank text file to the folder and rename it .nomedia
Thanks odrecords. Both of those work perfectly.
stock gallery will grab images from any folder on your SD if you don't want your gallery to load em theres two ways when in gallery hit menu then show hide. this will do as it says and either load or not load certain folders. Other option is to place a period in front of the folder name u want hidden i.e. ".test". This will hide it from the Android system in general but not file explorers.

[Problem] No "sdcard", only "root" folder :(

Hello,
it's a little bit difficult to explain my problem. it started few days ago when my 7.7 didn't turn on.
Then i read about the trick to press the power button longer than 10 seconds and it really worked. First I was glad but then i found out, that my picture gallery and my mp3 player was empty!
First I thought that everything was deleted, but that wasn't true. The files are still there. In fact it seems that the system has changed the "/sdcard" area to "/root". So the apps can't find the files.
I uploaded a file where you can see what i mean. On my Smartphone is also a "/sdcard" instead of the "root".
My 7.7 is rooted, no other modifications have been made...
Who can help me to solve this problem without doing a reset to factory setting..
That's just how the stock file browser shows it, it's not actually mounted at /root.
If the gallery and music player are empty you could try giving it a little time for the media scanner to add your media. If it doesn't show up, then wipe the data of the media storage app and restart your tab. You may have to restart it again after it has built its database to get everything working properly.
i wiped the data, didn't work
what if the internal storage is really mounted as /root now? what can i do to change it?
because the empty gallery and mp3player aren't the only problems now. if i take a picture, i cannot use the preview to look at it. it says "no elements" then. so i think its a problem more deep in the system...
i really dont understand how this could happen, i just turned the tab on..
If you have ES File Explorer, it should show that same "root" folder as actually being the internal "sdcard" folder. I don't think it has anything to do with actually being rooted, it is just how the built in File Manager lists the folder.
Another option, perhaps Fix Permissions in Recovery may fix your issues.
can i find a tutorial to fix permission in recovery mode?

can't find folder/filers from pc?

Hi, I downloaded a big iso file (say file x) on my nexus 4. weird thing is I can't see the file from my pc when I connect my phone to my pc. I can see the folders on my phone but can't see the folder (say folder f1) that contains the file..
Even more weird thing is when I moved some file in the f1 to a folder (say f2) using Astro file manager that can be seen from my pc. I can see the file in f2 on my phone, but it's not on my pc.
Then I renamed a file (file y) in f2 in Astro. Both fy and f2 can be seen on my pc. But on my pc I can't see the name of y changed.
In short what kind of changes I made to my files on my phone, nothing happens on my pc. I have unplugged the cable and repluggd it but the situation is still the same.
Also, I can create folder/file from pc and they can be seen from my phone.

All right, it's suddenly just fine. No idea why.
Was going to say it could be due to the horrible MTP that Android now uses instead of Mass Storage.
MTP Limits large files from being transferred to and from the device.
(and only shows some folders, usually the basic Music, Downloads, Pictures, etc - and folders that were created on the device via the computer)
But since it just showed up, I have no clue...
I have no problems with MTP, all my folders and files show up on my pc. Can also transfer large video files without a problem. The size limitation by the way is 4GB.

Sometimes you may have to reboot the phone to be able to see the files. Works for me. After download some files I can't see them immediately, have to reboot phone then plug in and files will be there.

I've had trouble with MTP, unable to write certain files... So I have to Zip them, copy them over, then unzip them from within Android. And I made some Backups of my Apex Settings and such, before uninstalling the app, when I plugged the N4 into my computer the location where Apex saved the file did not show.. Once I finally just saved them to my Google Drive from the phone, I was unable to copy them back over to the N4 (hence the reason for needing to ZIP them) - Also I recreated the Apex settings folder myself via Windows Explorer in the Android Folder of the n4 but Apex was unable to find it. When I clicked Backup within Apex, it normally will inform you of an overwrite if backup files already exist, but this did not happen.
I have the basic folders appear in Windows Explorer (Alarms, Android, DCIM, Downloads, Movies, Music, Notifications, Pictures, Podcast, and Ringtones) ... The Android Folder (where Apex saves its backups) would only display a few select folders (those related to media) so the Apex Backup folder is not visible in Windows Explorer...
Anyhow, I'm certainly not a fan of MTP... but will read the article you posted and maybe it will help/change my view
