Is there any plan for standalone use of Maps on GPS equipped smartwatches? - Wear OS Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there any plan for standalone use of Maps on GPS equipped smartwatches? Tried asking this over at Google Community but their forum doesn't work -- any new question gets an error message and won't post, so I'm hoping to find some help here.
According to Android Pit, “It’s easy to get turn-by-turn directions on your Android Wear smartwatch. Plus, with Android Wear 2.0, you can do it without being connected to your smartphone if your smartwatch has GPS built-in.”
Even a Google Support article regarding AW 2.0 seems to indicate this is possible, just by downloading and using Google Maps on your AW 2.0 device.
My device, the ZTE Quartz, has been reviewed as allowing for stand alone navigation. It has GPS, a SIM card, runs on a 3G network, and has GPS. It even has a menu option for Location of using “Device Only” for GPS. Yet, I can’t use Google Maps without use of my phone.
Wasn’t this supposed to be part of AW 2.0, using maps with the wearable only? It seems there is definitely a sense that it should be possible, as I've indicated above . I keep coming across references to it being possible, but also feedback that it is not possible in real life.
I see Huawei 2 customers are also frustrated, having understood that they could use the watch only for navigation, and yet it does not work, according to threads I've come across, while trying to research this.
The ZTE Quartz Community suggests it is a Google Maps problem that maybe will be fixed in the future? The thought seems to be that AW 2.0 should be capable of it, but the Maps app is at fault.
Any plans to address this? Or will navigation always require use of both the watch and the phone? This greatly reduces the independent use of the watch, obviously, which seemed to be the point of AW 2.0, to address such.
Any thoughts? Is anyone on AW 2.0, with a GPS enabled watch, able to use navigation without a phone?

Huawei watch 2 here.
As for the recent time, i found navigation with the watch to be unreliable, lag and overall pretty useless. With or without phone.
The google app and the maps app got several updates recently so I'll give it a try again.

lg urbane 2
i have the same issue and searching for a solution. the menu already says: use gps inbuilt and smartphone and can't change the option.
can we edit this somewhere?

Hi, yes I use it on my Moto 360 sport (upgraded AW2) and it works surprisingly well. Maps are quite clear on watch, zoom in and out easily and pick a start and end point then the app will plot a route and navigate - all offline with no phone!
I'm quite impressed. The only app that comes near is Viewranger.

I made a standalone navigation map here, if you'd like to try it out: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=uk.co.onibaku.standalonewearmap

This is looking really good. I want true standalone navigation on my Huawei Watch 2 4G. It has a sim so loads the route standalone and seems to be able to do everything expected...i'm trying the demo version now.
One question though...unless i'm missing something..how do you exit the app? I'm currently having to force close it.

I had not realised that the app does not cease to use GPS whilst it is in sleep mode, so I have added a button to exit the app properly when you drag down. I've just released it now.

Hi I have just bought the standalone wear map for my Huawei watch 2 and it works very well.
Would like to check whether we can record the tracks and have an option to display it on the watch screen in additional to the routes (plot out by defining the destinations).
If no, would there be plan in the future.
Thanks.

Hardware compass support [UPD 28 Dec: Working in *all* GPS navigation software]

Probably going to buy a HD2 within a few months, and I am wondering whether there is any information available about the support for the hardware compass in any navigation software like iGO8, iGO Amigo, Google Maps (which are my personal favorites).
Google Maps Update:
The new 3.3.1 update for Google Maps (permanent link to most recent Google Maps, at the time of writing 3.3.1) adds hardware compass support for the HD2! When in the 'my location' mode, it will show you the direction you are facing by means of the blue my location dot changing into a blue arrow. You may have to walk and turn around a little bit to somewhat trigger the use of the compass. Note that this doesn't work when 'my location' is off (which makes sense). What makes less sense is that it won't work in combination with GPS either. With GPS, the arrow will still be there but will always face north. Maybe a bug?
I didn't find a way to let Google Maps rotate the map on the screen, depending on the direction you are facing.
I've double checked, and this feature is not available in the stock 3.2.1 (#16) Google Maps on the HD2.
Google Maps Update (13 Dec 2009):
This can work when using GPS as well. In Google Maps, apparently it works when you set your GPS settings to manual.
For example, set your baud rate to 57600 (Options -> GPS Settings -> Set Manually: COM4, Baud 57600).
Get compass navigation support in your GPS navigation software! (28 Dec 2009):
Have been working with Mach2003 to enable support for the compass in potentially *all* GPS navigation software!

Not unless HTC releases SDK for HD2
There are three possibilities:
1. Yes, some apps such as those listed will (perhaps not immediately, but eventually) be able to access the compass.
2. Yes, but the compass is mainly there for WM7 compatibility so until a WM7 upgrade comes, most apps won't be able to access the compass.
3. No, the compass is there just for the HTC Compass app, which would be really pointless and stupid.

This is something I really don't understand about windows mobile devices.
The OEM's make such powerful phones with excellent hardware but they don't release the SDK to that developers can use these hardware feature and create good apps for the devices.
What's the point then?
I know Samsung recently starting releasing SDK's for their devices, I think HTC should follow if they want to keep people buying their devices.
i think that the compass will be used by some programs like igo and yes, google map, but not much more.
we will see in 2 weeks
As far as I know HTC hasn't released SDKs for their current sensors but it doesn't prevent programs from using them they were reverse engineered very quickly.

Hm, don't know which one I'd prefer =)
I don't think they'd just put a simple compass app on the device and NOT release a SDK just to get people excited for WM7. So I'm pretty sure the compass will be used in some way, either on preinstalled apps or via SDK.

I, for one being a Muslim, would want an application telling directions to Mecca for prayer purposes... This "would" be definitely a big plus for Muslim HD2 adopters. I know some people have similar app on iPhone, but it takes direction from internet and as a result is highly inaccurate ...
now thatleo's arrived, anyone know of a rotatey map program?
Wooohoo, some new development.
An API has been developed by MilaCzeque. Check here!!
Next step is for some developer to somehow let Google Maps and our favourite navigation software use the API.

can't get the arrow to respond to phone turns when standing still, which I would expect. But the location is incredibly more precise in the new version 3.3.1

On my device the arrow even rotates when I am sitting down and just rotating my phone!
Sorry, guys, but it's just the GPS tracking the direction it thinks you're moving.... No Compass-support in Google Maps I'm afraid.
Compass-support would be for instance rotating the map according to the direction the compass is pointing...

You're wrong. It (only) works when GPS is disabled. And it does rotate according to the direction you are facing. It just doesn't rotate the map, but the arrow. It works when you rotate the phone (or when you rotate yourself while you're holding the phone ) when sitting down/standing still/not using gps...

On my Touch Pro2 I get this arrow on Google Maps version 3.2.1, and that phone doesn't even have a compass so I think it's safe to say that the arrow is not compass-based. The fact that it doesn't work unless you're moving is also a dead give-away.
Only works with GPS over here, and doesnt rotate, doesnt look like it supports the compass yet.
I can't get it to work for me. Do I have to enable it somehow, or should it "just work" ?
It worked indoor for me, without GPS, and very accurately.
I disabled GPS, hit the blue dot in the corner and waited for
a minute before it started.

X10 gps question

Hello guys, yesterday i used the maps and it said i need to turn my 3g on i usually have it off. And when i press navigate it said i need to enable gps and i did. So my question is doesnt gps run without 3g or internet on other phones? And also i wana know does it use data?
because google maps requires an internet connection...
I all depends on which application you use for navigation.
Short answer:
Check with the software instrucions / help files to see how it behaves and works.
Long answer:
Some map software's have all the map data you need for your region already packed with it.
Advantage: No data need to be downloaded within the region, fast, works offline.
Disadvantage: Tricky to update the maps and often charge you for additional regions. Takes up space on the device.
Other apps download maps on the go as you navigate.
Advantage: Always the latest maps as you navigate. Takes less space on the device. Disadvantage: slow or even non-functional with poor or no data connection.
Google maps and Google navigation are of the latter one. They downloads maps as you navigate. therefor it is a good idea to have a data-plan with your provider so no additional expenses comes to.
They are free to use, so if you already have a data-plan with your provider, it's practically free.
On the X10, there are one application included by Sony Ericsson on most X10 sold out there: Wisepilot.
Wisepilot are the kind where you buy maps and download them into your phone, once this is done, it will use little or none of your data-connection.
I'm not sure, but I think Wisepilot are the kind that can be used offline once maps are bought and downloaded.
It can use the data-connection to download additional information such as "speed limit cameras", "spots of interest" and so on.
Try Mapdroid
This app downloads the MAP files when internet is available and can be used offline also with GPS activated..... try this, this is da best app

hey, when you use google navigation, will you be able to use the voice guidance??? I am having troubles to use the voice guidance...not sure how to activate it....
Having to buy the maps and such for wisepilot.. I wish there was a better solution for GPS on the x10. I wouldn't mind using it, but not necessary.
You can use GPS without 3G. I can even get a lock with my phone in airport mode and inside a cement building. When I say cement I mean cement, the floor, walls, and ceiling are all cement (hurricane proof). It is the third (top) floor however.
GPS software on x10
Currently I installed Navigon, Ndrive, MotoNave and Copilot 8 on my x10i with various world maps and all fully functional without 3g or network connection, direct data from satellite in orbit with the phone inbuild GPS receiver. Why you may ask? Because I can. How you may ask? The answers is out there! I am giving you the knowledge , now go and find your answers.
X10 is an Awsome device.
Another solution is to use the Brut Google Maps mod. It allows you to view previously viewed maps from the SD card. It saves the Google maps cache to your SD, but the only downside is that you have to view all of the places you want to travel on at all zoom levels.
If anyone needs it, I have the majority of Menorca done at all zoom levels......
I tend to use google navigation, the best bit of this is when you have your route downloaded and the voice guidance starts, you can then switch off your 3g and it still routes you. Obviously if you take a wrong turn it won't be able to download a new route until you switch 3g back on, but hey

the google navigation works fine, just there is no voice guidance... It only has the "beep" sound when it is about to change in direction (like make left/right turn, stay in the lane, or heading out to the exit) So I am wondering how to make it with turn by turn with voice guidance turn on...

[Q] looking for gps app.......

I do alot of off road where there is no wifi or 3g/4g. I need a nice app where I can download sat images and maybe even layer them with terrain. I won't be able to download on the road nor the trail. I tryed to use "maps". But I couldn't seem to get the maps. I always know where in goin(area) the next day. So I can download them ahead of time... I tried a couple diff apps. But most where paved roads. Nothing with sat. Memory space is not a problem. Planing on doing a seperate SD card just for this. Any help will be great. Thank you.

You should be able to cache Google Maps offline. I believe it is a Beta labs feature for maps where you can designate an area for offline use while you are still connected to a data network.
beta labs?
I think there are several off line GPS programs, including Waze and something called ZANavi. I think there are others as well, but if you search for offline GPS, there are quite a few, including Google's June 2011 announcement of offline maps, which has not apparently come to fruition yet.
good luck.

tile cache for google maps
Ive been playing around with the google maps some more......even though the pre-cached maps with terrain overlays doesnt work well I did discover a way to do it.
First go to the grounds area you want cached and choose the layer that works best for you.
Next zoom to your desired scale and the view will slowly come to focus. When it does it seems to automatically cache that tile area. Problem is you will have to slowly scroll to each section of the landscape you want cached pausing until in focus. Hopefully its not too large of an area. It does seem to work and stores the info even after restart.
i have been caching tiles like you said all night.(in between my bf3 battles) It seems to keep them on there. i shut off wifi, and rebooted. still there. But for how long. I hope its there for good. i love that app.

ZZERO lagggg on Maps! Finally...

I just compared it with my retired Z3 and I can remeber my G2 before it and they lagged ALL the time in Maps. It's almost always fixed at 60fps on the Nexus P, even during rotation of a section of 3D structures on the map. Have you guys tried it? What changed do you think?
What version has the new offline feature? I'm on 9.16.2 which doesn't seem to have it.

Just wanted to give everyone here a heads up.
Offline Maps will only work when there's no reliable data connection - it will always attempt to use the online version of maps, and continuously switch to online whenever possible.
See here: Google Offline Maps
Code:
If your Internet connection is slow or absent, you'll see a lightning bolt and Google Maps will use your offline areas to give you directions.
Note: You can get driving directions offline, but not transit, bicycling, or walking directions. In your driving directions, you won't have traffic info, alternate routes, or lane guidance. You also can't modify routes like avoiding tolls or ferries.

I have a Eonon head unit and every time I try running Sygic, all the settings reset and it tries to redownload data, so not really usable for me.
I have an Eonon GA2114 and Sygic works fine for me although I also find that it can start messing things up once connected to the internet sometimes.
The way I have it set up is all the maps are saved on my SD card so I dont use any data and you can then use an app to block Sygic access to the internet to avoid it messing anything up.

I really don't understand what the issue is then?
Have you made any MODS that are worth bragging about?
If you haven't change the dpi yet; that is one MOD you need to do. I'm sure you've realised that the available screen space is not good. This gives you a 1024x768 type resolution, but you will need to override this for certain builtin apps like the Radio for example.
I must have updated my post just after you quoted me haha, I added some extra info
I've not really got any special mods although at the moment I'm working on using Tasker and AutoRemote to have any SMS messages from my phone displayed on the headunit and also an option to reply.
I'll need to give that a go! What do you mean by having to override it for the builtin apps?

I didn't realise you have updated the post, I always have internet in the car so that must be causing issues; I did try reinstalling a few time, but got tired of downloading all the required files/map every time I reinstall.
Here maps is the best alternative that I've found, but I just stick to Google Maps as it as free traffic info too.
Built-in apps don't seem to be developed to cater for larger screens/resolution. So, the layout goes a bit messy, overcame this by using Xposed framework to apply the higher dpi setting to those particular apps (no more than 5)

If youre using Xposed; try changing your IMEI into the same as your phone IMEI for example, I think this would solve the problem for you two both as Sygic checks over internet your IMEI for a valid (phone) IMEI. I had the same problem, but Sygic works perfect for me now. See the post below for the details. Good luck!

I have found solution how to make Sygic to work on ours devices.
It is wery easy and it finaly works for me, and I would like to share it with others. You can make it in two steps.
First of all you have to install rooted ROM. I have install update_4_4_4_RK3066_1024X600_7_MAL_14_05_2015.rar
You can find rooted rom for your device on this link https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0BxmzvLRI7-eNeVA2SWkwM1pLZ28&usp=sharing#listv
When you done you have to install Xposed IMEI Changer. You can find it at Google Play Store and start the app. Xposed Installer will prompt up and you have to give permissions to IMEI Changer and to install Framework if you did not already.
Than yo have to open IMEI changer and copy IMEI code from your smartphone. (I have HTC M7 and IMEI code you can find in Settings-Info-Tlefon identity.
After that you have to reboot device and open IMEI changer to see is it new IMEI applied.
If it is, than you have to go to Google Play Store, install Sygic and download maps.
Result you can see on attached image.
I hope that it will work for others.

How do you find Google maps data wise, does it use a lot? I had really liked the look of the live traffic feature of Sygic but I would need to be online obviously and that would mess up my maps etc. I had thought about using just Google Maps for traffic as well since its free but worried about how much data it would use with the navigation of it always on (suppose I could download an offline section but think they are quite small areas )
Thanks for that, will need to give it a go

I've installed IMEI Changer and this works great; a little silly that the orginal IMEI number doesn't even follow the correct format which was maybe the cause of the internet linking issues.
Will try reinstalling Sygic later and hopefully would have made a difference.

I have unlimited data so have never really looked into data usage; but I can say that it is not only traffic data you will be receiving but it would also be download map tiles. Downloading offline map data for Google is OK, I have tried it, but as you have already mentioned; you can only download small areas and these do expire after a month (I believe?).
My main issue with Google Maps is the non-existence of speed camera detection, which is why I used to use Sygic. It is now a trade off between traffic/cameras?!?!?!?!?
I have a GA2114 as well. However I can't download the HERE offline maps. It just says waiting to download and then says it's slow. Any issues with you guys? I'm running the latest Malaysk ROM.

Nope, although I am using the stock ROM.
Have you tried downloading the map/data on a PC then moving to the appropriate location on your head unit?

I have not. I was not aware that I could download the map data on a pc and it would work in android. I could try it though.

Yep, there is a Sygic Map Downloader application that someone has created. Very simple to use and you can choose the required maps and it will download it with the required data.
You shouldn't have a problem finding this application if you look in the usual/common places people go for downloads.
If you have trouble finding it though, give me a shout and I can point you in the right direction via a pm.

I have the AG2114. I use Copilot and it works wonderfully. I bought the usa full version for I think $9.95.
I prefer Sygic and I have got it working. Just change your system IMEI number to match you phone. Works a treat. Sygic also warns of speed cameras, sharp bends, speeding and all sorts vocally.

Built-in apps don't seem to be developed to cater for larger screens/resolution. So, the layout goes a bit messy, overcame this by using Xposed framework to apply the higher dpi setting to those particular apps (no more than 5)

Would you be so kind as to say for which apps you've changed the dpi and what you've changed it to and how? Which Xposed module? AppOps or something else? I've noticed several things that are just way too large to fit properly and even Nova launcher can barely change anything which was a first.
Also, if you have a custom recovery, which one?
I've only rooted, put Viper4Android, Xposed and IMEI Changer on so far. As for navigation Waze seems a popular option for those not dead set on Sygic like I am since I have world wide license already and a major reason I bought this damn thing in the first place (GA5153F). Bummer is that if one goes for the Car Navigation app over the regular one it's bye bye Snoop Dog directions but overwise it seems better laid out. Now I'm tearing my hair out trying to get the E1750 3G modem to work. There's not even a Mobile Networks setting in the menu. Maybe this kinda stuff is why people flock to custom roms which I might at a later date but I digress...
Sygic seems to work on mine but no voices it's not muted
