[PETITION] Bumping up Moto G³ to Oreo - Moto G 2015 General

So, last year we didn't really succeed to reach the goal of the petition to Motorola to upgrade our phones to Nougat.
This year, I believe that Moto will see this request and make an Official Oreo for the Moto G³/Turbo Edition.
Please sign this petition: http://chn.ge/2xT6skv
It may seem hopeless by now, but the hope dies last. A Christmas miracle may occur!

I hate to say this ,but this ain't gonna happen bro.No Christmas miracle this year.

That just seems to be the case. But don't be that negative. Let's be honest - we won't lose anything if we at least try. It won't matter for me, personally, if Moto decides to not update the phone. But it's important for the other users. Some of them may be tech-savy but just don't want to risk damaging their device. Others may just want a stock variant of a ROM available in XDA. and the non-techsavy people don't care about updates because they don't understand them anyway. If Moto doesn't push the update to the people that don't understand computers, those people may think their battery life is worse than the other phones because Moto G³ is "a bad phone". They don't care about software. Everyone knows friends like this. But the Moto G³ is not an obsolete device. It has nice specs for Android Oreo, and even better specs for Android GO.
So, I personally believe that Moto will at least start to think, whether or not they should abandon their next phones after several months.

There is a fully-fledged Android Oreo ROM available. There is no reason why you would want Android GO. It's a water-downed version of Android Oreo. I said Android GO as a stock ROM if it is better for the Moto G³.

The moto G4 probably won't get oreo.. why would our device get it?

Yeah, that won't happen any time soon.. this is lenovo remember? Also no company has ever bumped a device for example from 5.0 to 7.0, as far as i know.

Hmm... That may be the case here, too (I'm 98% sure). But the thing is - Moto should learn from their mistakes. I think that it's a mistake to guarantee "2 year full support" and then dump the device after just several months.

It won't happen, stop wasting time

I don't even believe it. The thing is, there should be somethig to catch Motorola's eyes. They actually still want to do only one major OS upgrade per device. Source - Motorola Official Blog - Say hello to Android Oreo:
Since the time of posting this, we have learned of some errors in our marketing materials around Android O upgrades for moto g4 Plus. It’s our general practice for the moto g family to get one major OS upgrade per device, so it wasn’t originally planned for Android O. But it’s important to us we keep our promises, so in addition to the N upgrade it has already received, we will be upgrading moto g4 Plus to Android O. Because this is an unplanned upgrade, it will take some time to fit into our schedule, we’ll update our software upgrade page when we have more info.

Well, every older Moto G device (falcon, titan) recieved 2 major OS updates (falcon: Android Kitkat and Lollipop) (Titan: Lollipop and Marshamallow), meaning that the Moto G 2015 family (osprey and merlin) are the first and only moto g family to recieve only 1 major OS update. The G4 Play and the Moto X Style have the same or lower specs than the Moto G3 and G3 Turbo, but they DID recieve nougat, so the "too low specs" answer is just a lie. I personally own this device, and I´m using the 8GB version, wich might be a little too slow for Nougat or Oreo, but the 16GB and Turbo Variants would run those OS without any problem.

ANDROID M

I know Everybody is eager as Android M is just launched. But people going to ask about it still anyhow. So i am opening this thread to DE-clutter other lollipop Threads with the Android M stuff. You can ask anything you want.... All info is really appreciated.....

I'm wondering if the Low-Power 'Doze Mode' requires specific hardware, such as low-power cpu cores. If this was the case; the feature would not function on Moto G.

I think that it will be just a new driver for power management. Now let's wait for Motorola confirmation about Moto G and Android M. The rumored launch is in august and august is in the Q3 2015 (July -> September). The bad thing is that Google doesn't upload the developer preview code to AOSP so no costum ROM till release date just ported apps.

So its benefit on a smartphone is very little

Yes I don't think our device has any chance of getting it but 2nd gen may get it.
And as for the porting someone , may be @lost101 will surely port it to device
And if someone doesn't port, no need to worry as our device is officially supported by CM
At least gpe edition or moto g 4g edition will get it
As gpe is supposed to get updates for 1.5 yes
But it may expand to 2 yes
Don't worry our moto g is immortal
Will get updates every time

Was talking to a support rep on the Motorola website, he said we would get it!
I was amazed that he would already have that information and that they would be giving it out already, so il take it with a pinch of salt, but it sounds good to me at the same time.

at the time of writing this the android police link was offline. But if that has something to take with minimizing the wakelocks feature when the phone kept without use for longer periods, its nothing but they tweaked the activity manager. I discussed that with one developer he said let the source come then he can tell something about it. But he said it is not very big thing.... But who knows what is under the hood..
Nexus has got developer preview of M, my friend told nothing so exciting except some addons. i wonder is our Falcon able to handle M
dudes and dudettes, falcon and peregrine are 2 years old devices, I highly doubt that we get another update. Has been enough for a medium-end device, time to go to CM
To state some facts: (Assumes Android updates are only provided for 2 years)
Moto G (Falcon) went on sale in November 2013 (Update support ends November 2015)
Moto G GPE (Falcon) went on sale January 2014 (Update support ends January 2016)
Moto G 4G (Peregrine) went on sale June 2014 (Update support ends June 2016)
Moto G (Titan) went on sale September 2014 (Update support ends September 2016)
Historically Motorola releases new versions of Android first for Moto X during November, then Moto G, in December. I would not be surprised to see an Android M release for Moto G GPE in Novemeber 2015.
From what I have seen of Android M; I suspect there will be no issue with 'Falcon' hardware being able to run it as fluidly as Lollipop. Also Moto G (2015) (Titan) has identical hardware for the most-part.

I think it will get 7.0 by the end of the year. It got 6.0 pretty fast, and is still pretty much the flagship of Motorola. People just lost hope because of the ignored 6.0.1 update. I'm hoping to switch back to a Nexus anyway so I don't have to worry about updates anymore.

Well, if they abandon any real support for this phone in one year, I won't be coming back to Lenovo/Motorola. I'll just have to decide if expandable memory is still a deal maker/breaker with the next gen and go Nexus or something else.

Agreed!
Android 7 will be there!!!
With X-Style there aren't any technical/hardware issue or even a minor reason for not supporting the Android 7. So with this the liability of providing or not providing Android 7 will be with Motorola (Lenovo). Providing with Latest Android version being a USP of Moto phones, there is very chance that they will not risk reputation with this phone by excluding the update.
In-case this is not done for some reason then my steps would be:
1) Root and install Android 7 rom.
2) Buy a new Nexus phone.
3) Collect Invoice of all my Moto phone (Namely: Moto G (8gb), Moto G (16gb), Moto E (4gb), Moto G3, Moto G Turbo, Moto X Style).
4) Submit the collected Invoice plus the nexus invoice to Motorola with update as why they lost a loyal customer.
*Infact I was planing this for the delayed patch, and made my disappointment by tweeting the same to motorola. Were they assured me of early notification of update.*
[rant] motorola sucks/how to kill a perfectly good device
Motorola/Lenovo service has been horrible both in replacing defective hardware and with software updates even though they committed to timely release! They will probably at some point release Nougat on this device but really how long will it take (see where we are with MM updates!!) ? And as far as custom roms are concerned we're seeing so little developper activity for this device that I think everyone has already moved on! This was my first non-Nexus device in a long while and I'm not eager to duplicate the experience. It's really too bad as I really liked the Moto X pure. :crying:
Ffs these threads need to stop. Yes the Moto x pure 2015 will get 7. IT WILL TAKE TIME release of n is rolling out give it a few months

Oreo update

Hi,
So finally Moto has decided that there will be an Oreo update for G4 plus. But they have ignored G4 non-plus version. This is really pathetic on their part. The phone was released in May 2016 only and the company is pulling the plug after a mere 1 and a half years. There is not much difference between the phones so that is any I selected the non-plus version. Is there a way to contact their management or the concerned department so that we can have our voices heard? Any petition going on about the same?
Thanks

Don't expect too much from them. We could rely on custom ROMS.. just be patient.. at least one oreo ROM should be here
Yes ROM's will be there but I don't think that I will get time to flash as schedule is way too busy nowadays. I am not able to find time to even backup data from my phone so flashing is a big no, OTA yes.
so i guess no ports, right? :/
Oreo port
Well, couldn't someone port the g4 official Oreo update to g4? As said previously, the phones are practically identical. Should eb no problem to sideload the g4 plus update on the g4.

Exactly. So, just grab the update zip from g4 plus, flash it on your g4, and you have Oreo. Yay.
There are some hardware differences on the two phones so the update may not work, so don't just grab a zip and think it will solve the trick. Depending on what Lenovo (the owners of Moto) do in their code it might be an easy or hard port depending on what they do. Also nobody has come up with a way to root and install anything once we got Nougat n these mid range phones so I am not as hopeful there is a developer still working on this phone. If you want Oreo (trust me I'm debating too) we may need to upgrade to a newer phone than a 2 year old one when Oreo does come out for G4+. The companies have built in the obsolescence on these phones after 2 years. So they can continue to make profit by not offering upgrades on every device; even Apple doesn't think about the 3 and 4 series anymore in their IOS roll-outs and slows it down on them. So we might need to save the pennies and look deals come out in November.

Oreo update

Does anyone has news about when will oreo update be out for g5 plus? :crying:
Ohkay... 91 views and no replies. I mean... I guess it's because that kind of information can be easily Googled but here we go...
Hmmm, the Oreo update should drop by December. The last article I read said something about the update getting ready by the end of this year.
I mean, optimistically speaking, yes, it's happening. However, don't be surprised if we have to wait until January.
Or go flash yourself Oreo! It's super easy!

Moto is currently carrying out Oreo soak test on Moto Z, Z Play and maybe on Z2 Play. I read that on a reddit thread and GSMArena posted the same a few days ago. If I were you, I'd keep a close watch on the reddit threads for Oreo soak test's progress
Honestly... If we get it before Android P is in beta, I would be surprised. The G5 (non-S) series is towards the bottom of devices Moto is concerned with getting Nougat, newer devices will get it first and Lenovo's recent history of update releases is pretty poor. My opinion is we can look for it maybe March to May of next year, although I could be off a couple months one way or the other.

And Moto X Pure/Style, and the Moto G 2015... oh wait, that one never did get it's last upgrade. :/
Basically, since when Google had Motorola the update life cycle and speed of releases was improving the entire time... Since Lenovo got a hold of Moto, it's completely reversed to beyond where Motorola was at before Google got them. I like the hardware, but the software update cycle leaves a lot to be desired.
Anyway, this thread wasn't meant to be a P&M session, so I will let it go at that.

NO! We didn't. When I bought the device, it was mentioned in all promotional material that we will get guaranteed Android N and O updates. Though, there was no time frame mentioned, but this is ridiculous that we have to wait so long. I'm never gonna recommend a Moto device again, just because of updates, which was the USP for recommendations.
I am not sure when will Motorola ever speak about G4(+) as in their Oreo upgrade plan this device was missing at first. Then on reddit people made posts with promo materials showing promises and they just included the device in their list I believe several months ago. So, they never intended to upgrade it, and who knows they ever will.

The major update was nougat that this device received already(echo92 is correct). At the beginning it was shipped with marshmallow. Seems you bought the device while those promo materials were discussed around the world

This would be correct for any vendor that promises one major upgrade and had a history of doing so. But, Motorola was choice of many due to consistent security updates and at least 2 major upgrades, and not just that, they actually said that. So, you are right they gave one major update out of promised 2, but I didn't mean that I bought the device with Nougat.
My purchase date was 20-May-2016 which was the Amazon-exclusive launch date in India and got it in my hand on 21-May-2016. I have the device with one of my family members now as I upgraded to a different device.
Luring the updates and making customer buy due to that reason and denying or delaying later is not done. We don't have very strict consumer protection law here, otherwise there definitely would have been an update

Nokia all the way. Really, they have very good phones, decently priced with the majority of them running Android One. If my G4 Plus were to die now, I'd probably get a Nokia 7 Plus or a 6.1.

Nokia do seem to be a good choice, one of the things I'm not keen on is their lack of an official bootloader unlock program. Granted, you can pay for an unlock key (to whom?) and the increasing security measures (e.g. Safetynet) are making unlocking more of a hassle, just at the moment there's not much support for custom ROMs or TWRP.
