Front Camera quality sucks - Samsung Galaxy J7 (2017) Questions & Answers

Hi, been using the J7 Pro and frustrated at the front camera quality especially in low light. Any way to improve it cause I feel the front camera has some software softening going on even though I put the facebeauty to the lowest

The front-facing Camera is very bad!

It's pretty noisy and produces horrible selfies, the front facing camera of my s3 is 10 times better, what do you think?
Agreed. Just compared the FFC on my S3 to the S5 and the S3 produces a much better picture

Interesting, I do think that a 2.0 megapixel front facing camera is a little low compared to the 5.0 on the M8.

Megapixel count only really matters when you want to zoom and see the finer details.
True, front camera sucks big time!!! no good!! to the point that is making me want to return it, defective. and they send me another one!?
Seems like the same front camera used in the Xperia Z1/Z1 Compact (EDIT: Actually the Z1 uses aggressive software softening of the picture afterwards to reduce noise so it's not as bad). iPhone 5s has the best front camera from my experience - I haven't tried the M8.

is the camera that bad?

Hi I'm on the fence right now between buying the axon 7 European version and the oneus 3t and s7 edge. The only thing that holds me off is the camera.
I now hold the g5 that I'm planning to give to my wife. Now there is no way that she'll have a better camera than me .
So can you advise me pls?
Did the camera improved after nougat update?
Is the camera better with 3rd party cameras such as open caema app?
In every other field the axon 7 is an unbeatable beast

If you need a great camera on a phone get the s8/s7 or V20
From what I've seen it's not HORRIBLE, but it's not super good either. It's just... ok, I guess. As mentioned, if you want a better camera, get a Samsung or LG phone.

Well it's subjective, but keep in mind:
-The most flawed part of the camera is the software; ISOs are too high on manual mode
-Has high color noise, so photos aren't very good in the dark (unless you have a tripod, with which you can make some shet-in-your-pants photos)
-Very, I repeat VERY good on okay lighting conditions
-Already has RAW support
People usually say that the OP3 has a far better camera than this thing... I'm not that sure anymore, I compared an OP3T and my a7 and while it lacks on low light, the difference is still not that much.
Also different camera apps don't improve quality much, I used a bunch of them (HTC, Motorola, Google, LOS) and always find myself using the stock app for the simplicity and rather good design of it. The only thing worth complaining about is that you can only do 4x zoom on the stock camera, but you won't be using 8x digital too much anyways
The camera isn't bad, but it isn't as good as LG, Samsung or Apple, especially in low light. For the price of the phone it a pretty decent performer. I'm not sure if it improved as my phone got wet and the screen faild a few month back. I finally sent it in for repair today.
If Camera performance is a priority then the LG and Samsung are a better option. Where the Axon 7 shines is in audio both in it front facing speakers and headphone jack.

It's not even close to the performance of even older flagships in terms of overall usability. The Autofocus is so iffy that consider 1/2 of my quickshots are blurry as it just can't lock the target good.
On perfect scenes, the pics do hold up well against S7 and V20 but in terms of clarity there's just way too much noise.
The video performance is even worse often alot of noise show up and the low light video is completely unusable.
It's sad that the iPhone 6 which is much older beats it on all levels still photos, videos, AF, zoom.

OnePlus 3 is better but not much better, the AF is a step up but still very iffy compare to S6 or S7. I even laughed that my Note 4 beats both the Axon7 and OP3 on just random quick shots. The OP3 often has blurry faces and washed out colors if the lighting is weak. Thats why the camera software on flagships are better they compensate the lack of lighting by fixing the images to good effects.
Any low light or fast action shots you take will yield better results in manual mode. I have the Axon 7 (US) and HTC 10. Daylight shots, the Axon wins. Better clarity due to the 20 megapixel camera (HTC 10 has 12 megapixel), and color saturation is more vivid. But low light or fast action shots, the Axon falls flat on its face. I can point and shoot with the HTC consistently, but with the Axon I have to play with manual mode settings to get a shot that's close to the HTC's. Even with that manipulation, the Axon still falls behind the HTC.

Yeah, I read somewhere that using manual mode would be better in low light. I'll have to try that once I get my Axon back from the ZTE service center.
The camera isn't great but is good for a $400 phone. We tend to compare it to more expensive flagships, so I guess I can't complain too much.
I got the Axon 7 for it's audio capabilities and all around good specs for the price, and new the camera probably wasn't going to be top tier.

I have to say that I agree with everything said here, the camera is not top, but still gives a really nice results AS LONG AS YOU KNOW HOW TO PROPERLY USE IT.
This is not a camera for point and shoot in any situation, and as the guys pointed out, on daylight you will get amazing pictures, sharp and with nice colors. On low light... it really depends on your abilities.
I had the Mate 9 for a month, and I can say there wasn't so much difference between the 2, even on low light they were similar, but always the Mate 9 giving slightly better results.
One more thing, the video in the Axon 7 is kind of mediocre. I don't care about video, usually I don't record many videos, but I can say it was huge difference the video from the Mate 9 and the Axon 7. If you are a video guy, probably you would be disappointed with the Axon 7.
In the end, I gave back the Mate 9 and I kept the Axon 7 because for me, any smartphone should have a nice display, good camera, decent battery, excellent sound and nice performance. Axon 7 has all of those, but most important, the audio experience that no phone in the market can give you nowadays, and is the reason number one I won't change this phone soon.
:good:
Already bought the axon 7 and its a nice phone. The camera is real bad. I can't believe there are such bad camera nowdays. Plus the vibrator motor is noisy and of bad quality. Beside that its pretty nice phone
in comparison to my huawei mate 9, the axon 7 camera is really GREAT. it's like 3 times better than mate 9's ****ty dual cam.
can you switch off the notification vibration? its really annoying me, particularly if you set a notification sound. you then have a vibration and the sound both overlapping each other.

The camera is not bad. The vibratation motor is bad, I agree on that. But I think they could make it better if they reduced the vibration power, which I reckon it would be possible

I've searched but could not find how to reduce vibrator intensity. Even in resurrection remix there is no option. Can you recommend what to do?
Launch night mode, you are golden. Daylight is pretty good. And I must you, if you take makro shots: its FAR better then any phone i know

You can't reduce the intensity on capacity buttons vibration.
Also, the minimum intensity on google keyboard is strong , hence you won't reduce the notifications vibration either, It must be hardcoded in a way that not even kernels can't fix ¿?. I don't know. I'm not a developer...maybe we should contact one...but the fact that it's too strong on both custom and stock roms suggests that it can't be fixed.
So I've managed to get used to the vibration intensity of the though I wish someone would be able to develop a way to control it.
Regarding the camera, I've found that snap camera works great and the post process is excellent and make the shots much more sharper. Video above 720p are still horrible but what can you do.? Nothing is perfect
The camera is very bad in low light, the photo will likely be blurry due to the camera app trying to capture more light. But it does ok in good lighting. You probably can't go wrong with the S7 Edge, it's camera is better than the Axon 7.
Check out their camera section, in low light the S7's camera does much better.

That comparison was made with Marshmallow, and even when the S7 will always take better pictures, quality and focus improved a lot in Nougat.
zte mini camera
i know this is likely a dead topic, but have there been any software developments, either zte or custom rom, that have improved the axon mini's camera?
i read of a google pixel apk, does that install and work ok on the mini 7?

Selfie quality

You're beautiful and everyone knows it. That's why you take selfies. Rate this thread to express how the front-facing camera of the Xiaomi Poco F1 performs. A higher rating indicates that the front camera produces fantastic results consistently.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
I've rated selfie cam average coz it's a mixed bag
In artificial lighting conditions it produces somewhat blurry images. In fact selfies in complete darkness with the screen flash look better than selfies in artificial lights such as tubelights, bulbs etc. Bokeh selfies are better with more details as compared to normal selfies.
I'm talking about selfies with 0 beautification.
I must admit that I'm coming from nexus 5 which has 1.2 mp front camera so maybe I was expecting a bit too much from the 20 mp cam of Poco f1!
Come to think of it, various hardware checking apps show front camera as 5 mp!
May be they are detecting secondary camera at the back as front camera...anyone knows any app that detects all 3 cameras (megapixel and sensor used) correctly??!
It is correct with 5mp. The Cam combines four Pixels top one Superpixel.
I thought it's detecting 5 mp is secondary back camera and mistaking it for front cam

So you mean the front camera is actually a 5 mp cam and it should be denoted as such in hardware info apps such as CPU X? This explains why the selfie quality wasn't much much better as I had expected. I'm not that impressed with this 4 pixel combining to form a Superpixel technology....at least in poor lighting conditions.
It would also mean that the secondary 5 mp camera at the back isn't mentioned in the information generated by such apps!
Shouldn't it be mentioned?
I hope I'm clear on this point.
Noticed nowadays new camera unable to capture sharp pic for grp selfie
Grp selfie is where u at front n few members at the back to ensure everyone fit it in the picture
But what happen is only ur pic is sharp while the rest quite blur
This not happened during single lens with fix focus like s7 or 2016 model
How to fix this ?
I must admit that the selfies come out blurry when taken indoors especially when taken with volume rocker. It shakes up due to the press of the button. Do you guys face that?

I see the phone uses a 20MP sensor from Samsung.
This not a real 20MP camera...I mean, it can't be! Or it's very, VERY bad, even in natural light conditions.
The quality of selfies is way inferior to the 12MP sensor of the back camera.
The amount of details captured by it makes it look more like a 5-8MP sensor...

It's pretty good considering Huawei and Samsung selfie are overfiltered and poor quality.
This one can see your pores and pixel bins to prevent noise.
Hi look at this

You guys are completely crazy or have fault devices. The frontal camera is absolutely amazing. My girlfriend have a XS and its there's no comparison, F1 is much better in every way. You just need to turn off Beautiful Mode and increase sharpness on Options to make things more clear. It's one of the best selfie cameras that I ever see in my life. Get out of here you guys.
But there's a issue that Xiaomi need to fix. The camera dont focus acurately subjects at 1 meter from device. If you use Selfie Group Mode, the problem is gone.
The issue is with focus which is fixed at a distance of around 50cm. Beyond that, objects get blurred.

About the camera

I watched so many reviews on this device, I bought a 64GB variant. Camera is so average even on daylight, Front camera is straight rubbish in medium - low light conditions. G cam don't fix this either. Is it me or every device has this problem?

Yes, camera is bad in low light conditions, take a closer look at details on picture taken at night.
I don't really know about you guys, but mine is just straight up awesome. I was on a 7 day trip in Vienna with a friend of mine, made a bunch of photos, in maximum sun light conditions, medium light conditions, low light conditions, and the photos weren't bad at all. My friend actually picked a photo from my phone to upload on his instagram. (gotta add that he currently owns an iPhone XS Max)
The main camera is top notch, the wide and tele have terrible color depth, lens flares, purple fringing, noise.
GCam fixes those pretty well though.

The main camera has a competent sensor on paper, but in real life, even with gcam improvements, the results are far from stellar as the image lacks a little bit on fine detail, maybe due not good quality optics.
Of course, the front camera has difficulties in medium - low light but I think not more or less than many other devices.
This gcam version is specifically suited for low light conditions.

Can you please give us your feedback. I've tested the front camera on the note 10 lite and it's literally the worst, the pictures are so blurry with no details, it's like taking a photo with 2 MP Camera. And the weird thing is that the camera on the A71 is much better than the Note 10 lite even though they have the same 32MP sensor.

No improvement after February update. Really disappointed.

Awful selfie quality of note 10 lite
Has any of you guys check camera hardware with device info apps?
I checked it with 6 different apps and they all say the selfie camera's resolution is 5.2 mp NOT 32 mp!!
In my opinion, this is the best smartphone with selfie camera and the rear camera is very good with telephoto and 100 zoom
improvement update!
No improvement after February update. Really disappointed.
Selfie quality like low-end A51. But the camera hole is very small and it looks good, and as design - one of the best solutions on the market, imo.
Hello
I have no complaints about the quality of the selfies, it is more than correct.
Front camera is not bad, it's horrible. even compared to galaxy A series. but since I barely use it, this is not a big deal for me. having a non-curved amoled screen with headphone jack and s-pen is something that I've been waiting for since note 5. So I accept the shortcomings of this phone...
Not sure what is wrong.
The selfie quality seems to be fine for me on the Note 10. The only issue is the shutter button takes to long. Has to be instant. But the photo quality seems good to me.
Yeah the selfie quality is very good and the camera of Samsung note 10 lite is amazing I used it and get awesome results I hope everyone like it :good:
Just bought this phone, and the selfie camera is PLAIN AWFUL not just compared with my A71, but in general.
