Note 8 hotspot hack - grandfathered unlimited Verizon - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Guides, News, & Disc

I found a trick that works to enable the hotspot if you have an unlimited plan with no hotspot included. It works on my Verizon Note 8.
You follow everything in the video, except you only disable the red "mobile hotspot and tethering " app. Not the others.
It helps if you have Wi-Fi and mobile hotspot in the quick swipe down menu of your phone. Once you set up the wrong passworded Wi-Fi all you have to do is toggle them in the drop down. It's easy and fast.
Let me know if the link doesn't work.
https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sou...CC4wAw&usg=AFQjCNGLD66UrxdFo9tyLyXax3CAc0inCg

No go. I just get this error message no matter what when the hotspot is disabled - "All apps associated with this action have been turned off, blocked, or are not installed."

On mine I have Wi-Fi sharing enabled in the hotspot settings and also make sure you only disable the one app, not all 3 like the video. Hope that helps. Not sure if it'll make a difference.

Attached a picture of the package disabler.

I thought I had wifi sharing on already, but I guess not. That did it, thank you!!

not sure if this will work for Verizon but I found this method on galaxy s8+ and works on sprint note 8.
Hotspot hack works here as well. Seems easier than the other method.
1. Download Shortcut Master Lite
2. Search for LTEfunctionality
3. Click on com.test.LTEfunctionality
4. Launch
5. Scroll down to LTE APN Setting
6. Add " ,dun " to APN2 LTE and EHRPD internet under APN type. That line should read default, mms, dun when you finish.
7. Native Hotspot should work. You may have to do this hack again if you update Profile.

I have a VZW N8 and nothing happens when I try to launch com.test.LTEfunctionality. I tried to modify the APN settings through ADB already, and that didn't seem to take either, so I think Verizon just has the APN settings locked up pretty tight.

Do you guys have carrier locked or unlock? I still have unlimited from 2009 and the hot spot works just fine without any of this on an unlocked version....

I'm on the locked VZW, but also still have the grandfathered unlimited.
If I knew that workarounds would be available for all the network specific features, I would have definitely preferred unlocked.
Though I would not have gotten anywhere near the deal I got for the locked VZW...
So in an effort to make this as convenient as possible, I made a Bixby quick command to perform the necessary actions.
First off, I had to install the app WIFI Prioritizer and set the wrong-passworded network as #1 priority, with auto switch on. My other wifi networks all have auto switch off.
Quick command as follows:
1- Turn off wifi
2- Turn on wifi
3- Turn on hotspot
4- Turn off wifi
The timing of Bixby's execution seems perfect, however, there's a big caveat...
It seems wifi-sharing is turned off every time after disconnecting from a wifi network (including just turning wifi off when connected to a network).
I have not figured out any way to have Bixby turn wifi sharing back on.
So basically, unless you never connect to wifi, the quick command won't work without also manually turning on wifi sharing.
If anybody has any suggestions to deal with the wifi sharing issue, please let me know!

I have the Verizon version of the phone. Which is technically unlocked but with the Verizon firmware. If it's like the vzw s8 then we should be able to flash the unlocked firmware to it and the hotspot will just work. But the Verizon firmware locks down the hotspot unless you pay, or find a hack around it.

Dr, so just to confirm you have the carrier specific locked version. That would explain why you need to do this work around.
I have a non carrier specific unlocked phone on VZW network which activates the hot spot just fine without any of this.
Only reason I'm posting is to help pin down who needs this mod.
Im also used to flashing the hotspot apps when I root a new phone, which is over of the main reasons I root however I don't need it with note 8.

Does an unlocked phone on Verizon still get throttled after 15GB of Hotspot Data? I had been using an S3 with Foxfi and never got a message about using Hotspot Data till yesterday. Was looking at possibly getting another unlocked Note8 to serve as a Hotspot if I wouldn't get hit after 15GB on Verizon's new unlimited plan.

Once I dl'd PDP from their page I could disable, but then I cannot select Mobile hotspot.

The best solution for Verizon phones is to flash the unlocked firmware onto your phone. Super easy and problem solved. The one downside is you will lose vvm and wifi calling, but I don't use those anyway. And you get rid of the Verizon bloat.

I am trying to find a guide for the unlocked verizon firmware. I just got my new phone today.
Would love your advice since I also have an unlimited plan and on my note 4 I used Fox-fi to get a hot spot

@Proweedsmoker: thanks for your post. i relied on it when i ordered my unlocked note 8. i have an unlimited data plan from 2004. the phone arrived yesterday; it "only" took 2 weeks to arrive. i went to verizon to get a micro sim card (since the sim in my note 3 is the larger version). they activated it and first thing i did was turn on the hotspot to see if i could get wifi on my note 3. it worked perfectly. huge relief; no rooting, flashing or potential brick-making procedures. i'm loving this note 8 so far.

It's a great phone but I keep going back to the V20 because of my 3 main reasons: Hi-Fi sound, Interactive 2nd Screen and the ability of picking up a call by bringing the phone to your hear.

[Guide] How to switch from AT&T to T-Mobile and keep your SM-N900A fully functional
** DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT A DEVELOPER. I DO THIS AS A HOBBY AND SHARE MY FINDINGS IN CASE SOMEONE ELSE FINDS THEM USEFUL. **
** THIS WORKED ON MY DEVICE BUT IT MAY NOT WORK ON YOURS. APPLY AT YOUR OWN RISK **
Background
I always hated AT&T. When I got my first US cell phone in 1998, AT&T was a dominant force and Cingular was the underdog that provided better service. So for years I went out of my way to keep it Cingular through all of my relocations and phone number changes. Then AT&T bought Cingular and I was forced to become an AT&T subscriber. Then the iphone came along on the AT&T network, with the unlimited internet plan, which sealed my fate with this carrier for years.
At some point AT&T stopped offering the unlimited plan and I was one of the lucky ones who had their iphone plans grandfathered in. That prevented me for a long time from switching, but it became increasingly clear that AT&T has no intention of letting me use my plan as intended. All the signs were there: from threatening text messages every time I tried to tether my phone, to insulting slow-downs of data transfer after 2-5G of usage. At some point one gets tired of feeling like a criminal who is constantly trying to trick the carrier to squeeze a little more service here and there.
The last straw was when they made it very clear that they will not allow me to use a tablet as a phone, even if it has phone capabilities, even if I let go of my unlimited data plan! Their solution? buy a new data-plan only for your tablet. I am done with this $#(^. T-mobile had me at hello. All it takes is to notice the choice of music they play for you when you are on hold with the customer service: ATT: elevator music, T-mobile: Miley Cyrus.
So, here is what I did to make the switch and keep my note 3 issued by AT&T to use on T-mobile network.
Why?
If your phone is unlocked you can certainly pop the new sim card in and it will latch on to the T-mobile network. However you will be missing all the goodies that come with a T-mobile issued phone. Hence my journey to T-mobilize my SM-900A. A T-mobile Note 3 has an unlocked bootloader. I cannot have that transferred to an AT&T phone. But there are other good things that can be ported over. For example T-mobile's WiFi calling is implemented at the OS level and you cannot just copy over an APK to make it work. So if you follow this guide you will be able to turn your phone on and boot it up to (almost) exactly what a SM-N900T looks and behaves like.
Requirements:
1- Your phone should be on Jelly bean 4.3. Mine was on N900AUCUBNB4 but lower versions will work too. I have no intention of upgrading my phone to Kitkat anytime soon because I simply do not see the advantage. However, an experienced developer should be able to modify this process for Kitkat.
2- Your phone should be rooted.
3- You will need about 5G of empty space to install the T-mobile ROM.
4- Read the instructions below once before you start anything. If any word or phrase does not make sense to you STOP, google, ask questions, make sure you understand it, then continue.
Instructions:
1- Always backup your important stuff before doing a thing like this to your phone.
2- Root your phone if it already isn't. Your options that won't trip knox are Kingo and Towelroot. I recommend the latter.
3- dwitherell has done a great job of preparing a Jelly Bean T-mobile Rom for porting to AT&T. Download TweakedN3v2.0.12614 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2625946
4- This ROM is pre-rooted but contains a few things that should be removed or tweaked for our purpose. Unzip it somewhere.
5- Delete vrtheme directory and bootcolx.img and bootstock.img
6- Replace defaults\install.prop with the file attached below.
7- Replace META-INF\com\google\android\updater-script with the file attached below.
8- Re-zip the whole thing again and call it N3-Tmobile.zip (or whatever you want)
9- Copy that to your sdcard. It may also be a good idea to copy a file manager apk like "File Manager HD" on your sdcard as well so you can later install it when the T-mobile Rom is in place.
10- Install Note 3 AT&T Safestrap 3.71 for Jelly Bean on your phone. It can be found at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2572978
11- Boot into Safestrap recovery and create a Rom slot. Call it T-mobile or whatever you like. Activate it.
12- From the Safestrap main menu, install the N3-Tmobile.zip that you created in step 8 into the T-mobile slot. Be careful not to mess up your Stock Rom slot. The installation may take 3 to 10 minutes. If it takes longer, reboot the phone, wipe this Rom slot and try again.
13- When it is done, go to Safestrap main menu -> wipe -> advanced wipe -> select ONLY Dalvic, data, and cache, and the hit the wipe button.
14- Turn off the phone. Take out your AT&T sim card out, DON'T put your T-Mobile sim card in yet. Turn the phone on and reboot to the T-mobile Rom. Don't enable Wifi in the initial setup.
15- Now your T-mobile Rom is up and running but you don't have internet or cellular connections.
16- In your /system/app directory rename the following to [file_name].apk.bac (this is where the second part of step 9 becomes useful):
FotaClient.apk
FWUpgrade.apk
LocalFOTA.apk
SPPPushClient_Dev.apk
SyncmlDM.apk
16- Turn your phone off, put the T-mobile sim in it, turn on and enjoy.
If you want to swap the sim card back to AT&T, all it takes is to reboot to your stock ROM. Everything will be still there as you left them.
does it work?
Screen shots
Here is how well it has worked for me so far. I'm in Sweden now and their free sms abroad and unlimited Internet has so far worked as promised (although at data rates close to 100kb/s only which is expected. In the first screenshot I'm turning wifi off and as you can see the phone registers on to the local carrier. In the next screenshot I turned wifi calling on which allowed me to call back to the US for free. There was a half second audio delay but the quality was very good. Finally I attached my home screen shot that shows the T mobile apps that you get after this installation.
So far everything has been working great in the US and in Europe for me but please post your experience here if this has worked for you too.
Just to make sure we are on the same page, you had an ATT N3 and did this guide to get the TMO network. Is your baseband and broadband tmobile? That is what I am looking at. The ATT N3 works but I want the TMO Broadband / modems. Can you take a pic on the broadband page please. Does this chicken stract make sence?

Yes, i have an att n3 and i want it to work on t mobile network. The only thing this method flashes onto your phone is a /system partition. In fact that is all that you can do with safestrap. In one of the steps I am instructing you to remove the baseband from the zip so when you are done your baseband is still ATT.
I'm not sure why you want to flash t mobile base band on your ATT phone. The ATT BB (at least the BNB4) is fully capable of handling t mobile 4G LTE and other data bands.
What do you mean by "a picture of the broadband page?"

Second screenshot didn't include a blackout on the I.P. Considering you did that in the first screenshot, just pointing out you might want to for the second one as well.
I don't have a Note 3, my dad does. I'm just browsing the forums for an unlock method for SIM for NC(2?) firmware. I like where this one is going. Dad doesn't want me testing sh^& on his phone though, so no luck there. Sorry, but if another tests and claims it works, I'll have all permission to experiment.

Thanks for pointing that out. The reason I did not mask the second ip address is that in the second picture the phone is on wifi and the ip address is an inside-the-house ip address. These addresses are typical in all internal networks and do not contain any identifying information.

Ah, my apologies. ^^
Switched from AT&T to T-Mobile
I switched from AT&T to T-Mobile and wanted to use my 2 Galaxy Note 3's SM-N9000A on T-mobile with all the benefits of T-Mobiles service (e.g. Wi-Fi calling, etc.). Firstly I had to get my phones sim unlocked, and then to find a rom that would port over T-Mobiles rom SM-N900T. After searching diligently to find answers I came across this thread. Najoor helped me get the rom installed (over PM's) and I unlocked the phones (cellunlocker.net under $30), and I am happily an ex-AT&T customer. I like having control over my cell phone plan, which I believe T-Mobile provides. Thanks again Najoor!
The big question still remains: Why? Just to add wifi calling and t mobile app? The 3g bands are still not enabled so it's either 2G, 4G LTE, or 4G. Does this add native wifi tethering? But you can do that with towel root and xposed framework.
I like to keep my AT&T option open, switching between T Mobile(cheaper $45 for 5GB, no tax) and Go Phone(1GB, $45, but better coverage, no tax also), but I recently rooted to take advantage of the tethering which does not work natively on T-mobile since it's an AT&T phone. I can't imagine being on T-Mobile if the signal is so bad that I would need WiFi calling and the t mobile app works just fine on the AT&T Note 3.
Wait so even if I flash another modem I can't enable the 3G bands? I'm pretty sure I just did
Was looking for something like this.
So, the latest TMOBILE based ROM is only jellybean 4.3 ? Is there a kit kat version.

Look at how to enable the AWS band on the note 3 thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2516224
I don't think it has been done. Are you getting 3g in some area? I'm in a good coverage area and only see 4g or 4g LTE. Haven't taken it outside the good coverage area yet but I'm expecting edge only after I leave the 4g area.
I'm having an issuse.
I did exactly what you said, installed safestrap sucessfully, made a rom slot, extracted tweaked whatever, deleted bootstock and bootcolx and vrtheme replaced the two files, installed Tweaked-whatever on that rom slot, deleted Cache, Dalvid Cache, and data and rebooted. It doesn't work. It just gives me a black screen!
What do I do? This doesn't make any sense
EDIT: Didn't realize this thread was dead! Oops!

Hello buddy. I would like to try this method to use wifi calling. Where did you get the mod?
It doesn't work.
Just go to Cricket. $60 a month prepaid unlimited talk, unlimited text, and 10GB of data. All on the AT&T network.

wifi tether with out root or a tethering plan

The first thing you need is your MSL code from Sprint/your service provider . You can do this by simply calling the Sprint customer service/your providers customer service and ask for the MSL code after saying an alibi like slow connection(i just said i wanted for personal records ). You can also use any MSL utility app that is working on your device.
Now open the dialer and enter ##DATA# (##3282#)
Click on the Edit button in the popup and enter your MSL code and click OK.
Now navigate to APN settings from the Mobile Networks menu and open APN2 EHRPD Internet and APN2 LTE internet individually and change APN Type to default, mms, dun.
Save the settings in both the APN configurations and reboot the device.
I CAN CONFIRM THIS WORKED ON SPRINT NOTE 5 MAY WORK ON OTHERS
I DID NOT MAKE THIS MY SELF THE original thread can be found here http://www.droidviews.com/enable-wifi-tethering-on-sprint-galaxy-s6-s6-edge-and-note-4-on-lollipop/
This is already posted on this site and confirmed working for sprint.

You turn on the factory wifi Hotspot that comes built it.
Without the mod it will not turn on, and a pop up message that says your not subscribed to a tethering plan or something to that extent will show up. After this mod it turns on as if you were paying the carrier for a plan. This is not new for the note 5 nor is it different. Please look under older Samsung phones if you can't find what your looking for. The instructions on how to do it are exactly the same as note 4 and other phones.
Yeah i found it. i saw the bluetooth and usb but not wifi. i found it, dont know how i missed it. apparently i have a plan because it lets me tether out of the box.
Confirmation working with my sprint device.
Confirmed working with my sprint note 5. Don't forget to click the option "more" in the top right corner when changing the settings and click save before rebooting device.

Do you have Verizon or a plan that's not unlimited? If you pay per GB for data or have limited data plan they usually don't care how you use it. People like myself that have unlimited data and sprint they lock it down to get you to pay extra for sharing your unlimited data.
This msl code is different for each number?
What about fully unlocked phone, isn't this feature already there by default? I never bought subsidized phone from carrier, I always bought unlocked from overseas, where tethering was always available,so I don't know how this thing works.
My son bought unlocked iPhone 6 plus and he can tether as well. So it is only not working by default on subsidized phones?
this is the same method i used back with my Sprint S6e. but i'm wondering about my Note 5 Duos. i haven't gone out to get any SIMS yet. i'm currently wirelessly tethered to my S6e.

Foxfi / Pda net

Both bluetooth and USB work, but WiFi requires a mobile hotspot plan (which I don't have, so I can't test).
If you are the only one on your plan, go prepaid, I dont pay extra and the stock tethering under settings works just fine

I searched for the same, tried a number of apps, tried all of these recommended root apps & protocols ended up with the same disappointing result. Most of it just didn't work or no one could provide the necessary tools in proper sequential steps.
With you phone powered on remove your sim card. Go to Mobile hot spot & tethering, activate blue tooth tethering.wait a few minutes put your sim back in. you should now be able to pair devices with your phone and share its internet connection..

Found this in the other threads regarding hotspot. If you download "Network Signal Refresher Lite" from 8JAPPS in the playstore you can use native tethering. Just open the app and hit refresh and the moment you lose service drag down the quick tiles and tap the hotspot button. Been using this on my Moto Z Droid for the past few days and it works perfectly

Great tip. works like a charm. and i see why, its so simple. if ya wanted something similar without downloading the app id imagine pulling your sim or anything that pops the radio off for a few so it can't call home and ask for permission.

Does anyone know if the usb/ or hotspot of foxfi/pda net or other non native teathering apps work on the z force droid? ive been on unlocked and rooted phones for a while but i'm just not seeing anything that i want. i bought a oneplus 3 then found out it didn't have the lte bands for verizion. derp. but i think id go back to a locked phone for this modular deal as long as i could still teather with pda net. cuz i ant pay'n no 30 bucks for Verizon to "unlock" the capability of my phone. pffffffftttttttttt.
just curious if anyone knows or could check

Use Network signal refresher
Does anyone know of any workarounds? Network Signal Refresher stopped working for me with Nougat as well.
Yesterday they had an update for Network Signal Lite to version 5.0. Didnt work for me.
Today they have another update to version 5.1 hoping it fixes the issue. Just figured I would share.
i take it popping the sim doesn't work as well then. seams as if they might have closed the "if not able to call home let hotspot on anyway" bug then.

Popping the sim card does indeed work just hit the hotspot icon in the quick settings right after you reinsert it. Been doing since the first day nougat came out and it works every time.

I've been doing this, and it does work, but I'm finding it turns itself off after a short time - are you seeing this as well?

[FIX] Tethering Without Root

I, and many others found it shocking that Huawei managed to fix the tether provisioning to where it will connect to your carrier, no matter who they are. That being said, if you do not pay for a tethering package, you will not be able to use it... Until now.
The irony here is that root wouldn't help you fix it, editing the buildprop yields no results, neither do any of the root apps like Wifi Tether Router.
I found a way to activate the Wifi hotspot without root and it works just fine. Here's what I tested it on :
Cricket
MetroPCS
EMIUI 4.1
1. Insert another active SIM(or removing the current sim and leaving it out might work too) and start the hotspot.
2. Remove the SIM tray and put in the active SIM card you would like to tether on.
3. Connect and enjoy the hotspot.
This does not mask your tethered traffic in anyway. Perhaps if you use Wifi tether router in conjunction with this FIX you will be able to mask your tethered traffic in the eyes of carriers like MetroPCS/T-Mobile. Cricket seems to not care a bit about me doing it though. You may not need another SIM card but I have not tested that yet. Hope this is helpful to those who use their phone as their main source of internet.
USA or foreign SIM
Interesting! Which SIM did you use? US or foreign?

I am using the US 32GB model of the phone. However, this should not be a problem. I am on Cricket which runs on the AT&T network in the USA. And yeah it's funny. I go through all the trouble to try to enable hotspot and then thought about my MetroPCS SIM and threw it in and it let me turn on the hotspot. Surely it wouldn't allow the hotspot to stay on while I remove the SIM, right? Wrong. hahaha
I found a simple root method that works for Cricket and AT&T.Using Root Explorer,go to System/App/ and find a folder called ATT Entitlement, long press it and move it to external sd for safekeeping.Reboot and Voila!!! , Hotspot works perfectly fine.Happy Tethering.
In chrome on your pc just install user agent switcher and then pick from the list and provider will still see Android and do what you do on the interwebs.... That's what i have done for years now to use phone tethering to pc
I'm stock frd-L04 EMUI 5 using a AT&t Go phone sim and I can use portable hotspot without doing any tricks or rooting or anything. After setting up a password for the hotspot, I just turned it on found honor 8 on my laptop entered the password and it works just fine. Unless my prepaid Go phone plan comes with tethering and I'm not aware of it but I highly doubt it.
Interesting because MetroPCS doesn't restrict tethering on any but the Unlimited plans (the $50 plan has no tethering, $60 plan has 8gb tethering) any other plans allow tethering up to whatever their data cap is. Systems will automatically sker devices using illogical data amounts from the network and systems may allow it to continue for a bit then sker out devices causing network congestion.
I can't tether on L04 with EMUI5 on Straighttalk. Rooted and build.p.prop edits, etc. no luck! Anyone else on Straightalk and EMUI 5?
No luck.
FRD-L04 B360, tried with no SIM which turned on my hotspot, but the moment inserted my Cricket SIM, it turned off my hotspot.

It works for me on L04 B360. Just keep sim tray out by 1 mm, activate tethering and immediately push back in the sim tray.

Unfortunately with Straighttalk it does not work even after rooting, editing build. prop and anything else I could find. No ATTentitle folder is present

Didn't work for me for Cricket Wireless. I'm on stock EMUI 5.0
I popped my SIM tray out, was able to turn on hotspot, but when I push the SIM tray back in, my hotspot turns off.

Will that work on Tmobile SimCard as well of just Verizon?
What about AT&T? Will It work
I hope that I'm wrong but I'm about 100% sure that this will not work for AT&T. AT&T actually requires a Specialized or particular APK to work. In my previous phone Galaxy S7 Edge these apps were installed during flashing of the CSC
Does not work on Sprint Note 8.

These features will work out of the box on T-Mobile including WiFi Calling as long as you have the correct plan provisioned on your account.

when i do the toggle provisioning in the self provisioning it keeps going back to disable, it wont stay enable. Any idea? Verizon, unlocked note 8
I wanted to add: For me, the Video calling option in settings wasnt there till a hard reboot. After that is exactly like the OP demo'd. Wish I had somebody to call to test lol.
Thanks OP.

I was on stock until root was made available and been on that.
I tried this, but when i go to IMS Information everything is false and can't be changed. It also doesn't have the VZW VoLTE registration information at the bottom of that screen like you have. I see the VZW VoLTE profile under "IMS Profile", but forcing a manual register doesn't seem to do anything

If it is false call carrier to have imei whitelisted and reprovisioned, say it's for connectivity issues...bought from Samsung...afterwards you can see it change to true....you may have to ##SCRTN# to provision on your end...you may just need to update profile and prl...
I wonder if this will get wifi calling once I root. The rooting process uses a method of mixing boot files and essentially makes it a U1 rom with a Verizon csc but wifi calling isn't available. I'm going to give this a go to see if it'll enable it. If anyone has tried let me know. Thanks to the OP for this one.

Interested to know if this fixes wifi calling, if so that's the only reason I haven't checked out root - I get 0 signal at work, and depend on wifi calling for my primary cell number. Google voice works over wifi of course!

Any success with this?
Hey,
I can enable video calling but I cannot use it.
When I make a call, it just shows up for a second and turns off. Does anyone have this issue?
