Sprint Note 8 Hotspot - Still works - No Root - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Guides, News, & Discu

Tested this still works great!
https://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-s7-edge/how-to/hotspot-bypass-nougat-ok-t3563446

I just got my note 8 and installed a software update.
I went to the hotspot option and enabled it. It did not tell me anything about charges or fees. Does this mean it works? Or is the mod you posted a stealth method so that sprint does not know that we use Hotspot?

How do I know if this is working correctly?
Weird thing is that:
Hotspot worked out of the box
I am able to use hotspot after changing APN settings without turning data off first
So I just want to be sure I did this right.
Was instruction 7 and 8 just informational things and not a step to get this working? Is adding "DUN" to my LTE APN really all I need to do?
Thanks

If you have a newer plan, 5 or so gigs are included. So it would be working out of the box.
I have a much older unlimited plan that doesn't include it and this method works fine. Yes adding "dun" is a step.
I beleive in your situation to test it, would be using it and checking on your sprint usage to see if it's counting towards "hotspot"
Mine stays at 0 and I use I've been using it since my note 5.

If you have hotspot plan it will show on your My Sprint usage...if not there is no way to distinguish data from data...dun bypasses this...the actual hotspot connection tags the header file of packets that can be metered by specific server...this is not provisioned on bypass...the other method changes server connection which furthers data concealment...I have been usin dun for over 5 years now with no consequence.

New to Focus on Rogers

Hello All,
I just got a AT & T "unlocked" samsung focus. I plan to use it on rogers and been reading the forms for a few days as see their may be issues.
Can i just put in my SIM card and hope for the best? I was wondering how hard is it to set up the APN settings and MMS settings on the focus? IF i try to update my Focus to Mango will it relock it self?
Is their anything i should know about using an unlocked AT & T phone on the rogers network?
Thanks and sorry for all the questions.

Once SIM unlocked, the phone does not re-lock if you update/flash/downgrade/upgrade the rom or use another SIM or hard reset the phone.
Secondly, you will need the "Network Profile" app from Samsung to switch the network profile from AT&T to Rogers. You'll find it in Marketplace, in Apps (not Samsung Zone).

On the phone, yes. Connect through wi-fi if you don't have a data plan (faster anyway). In Zune you won't find it through search.
Just downloaded the app and i only see AT & T and no choice to change it.

You might be better off to flash it with the Rogers ROM if you plan on keeping it for a while. Trust me you'll have less issues.

That's also another solution, but flashing is time consuming and a bit radical. But if you're at the very beginning of your journey, it's definitely something to consider.

This with a Rogers SIM? Very weird, should display current carrier and AT&T.
Can you check with a different SIM? (either Rogers and/or any other carrier than Rogers/AT&T)
Is this hard to do? Can you please send me a link to show me how? (that is how to flash it for rogers)

You are right. Edited the old post to contain the link as well. You can get it from here. Don't forget to thank PavelX1 for the rom.
Flashing to Rogers ROM is about an hour of time. I would suggest adding any SD cards (if you are expaning memory size) after. If you already have a card there be sure to back it up if you have anything important before you flash the unit. It will erase evertyhing!

It should go failry easy. I've flashed to the ROM, also to AT&T and back again about 4 or 5 times now. Very simple tool to use.
thank you! it was quite easy to do.

Tethering for free?

I have a totally unlimited data plan but I am restricted to only 2gb of tethering (I can eat through 2gb in less than an hour. )
With my rooted note 4, is there any way / xposed module etc where I can get unlimited tethering without the network knowing?
Kind of sucks paying £40+ a month for unlimited data when it turns out it's not really unlimited.
Kind regards,
Chiller.
with an unrooted note4 you could route everything through a home vpn. may not work with a rooted one depending on what vpn hardware you use.
my zyxel usg 300 vpn works great with my note 4 but it needs an unrooted phone.
A great app to use is Klink. Klink goes for about $5 on the app market, and rooting is not required to run. The only requirement to tether is having the klink program running on your Pc or Mac. The app bypasses your tethering setting and connects you strait to your unlimited data. I've been using the app for about 2 years and used around 1tb of my Sprint unlimited data. It's the best $5 I've ever spent. I recommend trying the demo first.
Hmm, not really what I'm after. I want to use it while out and about (in the car for example) so my daughters tablet can go online / netflix etc.
I don't know if it works with a rooted phone or how it'd work with your carrier, I use FoxFi/PdaNet on AT&T in the U.S. but I have to physically USB tether my phone to my laptop. Some of the other U.S. carriers haven't blocked FoxFi/PdaNet's mobile hotspot capabilities. There is a free app to try it.
It has Mobile Hotspot, Bluetooth & USB tether options but I can only use the USB tether option in the car.

Try pda net from play store. If you want to use it with another tablet it may work. Nowadays carrier got smarter and they for certain data packets but since you want to use it with another mobile browser and mobile netflix it may work

I realise that you might already have the answer to this. I am on three, no root, stock. I created a new apn called three, put the apn as three.co.uk
i then used adb to send "settings put global tether_dun_required 0"
rebooted, now im using about 50gb a month, free

Ooh now this sounds interesting. Will it be possible to do without using adb?
You might be surprised to hear, in all my time rooting and messing about with phones, I've never used adb directly.
Is there a file or a string I can simply modify? I decided to root my phone a month or so back because I've already been told, they don't care if it's rooted at my local samsung galaxy store!

For rooted phones, try this, i didnt root mine to achieve what I wanted.
Install a SQLite editor such as SQLite Debugger
Using the SQLite editor, navigate to the file /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db (this is the part that requires root)
Enter the database global
Change the value of field tether_dun_required to 0.

Only three offerr truly unlimited data and are transparent in the way which they sell it. giffgaff dont offer truly unlimited, neither do virgin (got their hands slapped)
Even the new announced unlimited data sim from talk talk lets them decide what constitutes unlimited.

I'm on three as well and just bought a Nexus 6P. I do not want to root it and have unlimited data plan. I used to use WiFi tether on my Note 3 but that app doesn't work on the 6P. Can you explain to me as simply as you can how you did this adb? What is adb is it an app on the playstore? I've searched and quite a few came up but most say the phone needs to be rooted.
If I create this apn and somehow get tethering to work on my unlimited data and not to take data off my allowed allowance of only 4GB/month. Would I be able to use data normally on the phone on a day to day basis on this new apn, or would I need to switch every time I want to tether and then switch back? And use the stock tether/hotspot method instead of these tethering apps?
Sent from my Nexus 6P using XDA Forums
This does not work on lollipop. I had limited success on Android 5.0. Seems this workaround only works on kitkat…(for me anyway)
I tried this it and it is still not working.
I have Kitkat 4.4.4
I changed the value to zero.
When I go to turn on the hotspot it still gives me the pop up saying I need a subscription.
Is there something else I need to be doing?
I am using FOXFI. I have also tried it with PDANET.
How do I get rid of the subscription check?
I am beyond frustrated with this thing. I have been trying to turn this into a hotspot for over a year now.

Enabled Stock WiFi Hotspot Enable XT1526 others ?

Enabled stock tether with help of XPosed Framework and Moto Tether Module.
Tried the straitforward way of just modifying build.prop and moto tether module but wasn't able to get out to the web. Curious to know if all my steps were necessairy. Here is what I did to get it working.
Needed:
Root
SQLLiteEditor
Build.Prof editing ability
XPosed Framework & Module X Tether also known as Moto Tether
Steps:
Edited the following database with SQLLiteEditor.
\data\data\com.android.providers.telephony\databases\telephony.db
Opened carriers
Filter/searched for the word boost for my ignorance here I edit all of them.
Under column 'type' change any that say default,MMS to default,MMS,dun and also change any that say fota,ia to fota,ia,dun
Exit SQLLiteEditor
I rebooted and installed the XPosed Framework with Module X Tether also known as Moto Tether
Changed the Line in the build.prop ro.mot.tether_dun_required=1 to ro.mot.tether_dun_required=0
Rebooted and then it worked.
I did all of the steps listed above. I still cannot get my tablet connected to the internet when I am broadcasting the wifi network via the built in Moto E 2015 tether app. The tablet connects to the network using the password I created for it but will not load any webpages. They all timeout.
The moto E itself does have internet connectivity when tethering and when not.
Please help if possible!
Thanks

The exact same thing happen to me while I was tinkering to get this working. I thought it should be working and wasn't, that's why I thought the order had something to do with it and posted mostly for me to remember what I had done. I tried everything, pinged gateways, static IP address on my tablet, you name it, to try to determine why it didn't work. Double checked for dumbthumb.
My setup, stock firmware that came with the phone, unlocked and rooted, running TWRP for what it's worth. I have in the past disabled some nobrainer bloat and even uninstalled or disabled some of the Motorola software. Maybe I missed something i did that was silly between steps too but, nothing huge I think.
You are the only one who reported back so far that tried. Wish there were at least someone reporting success with feedback.
I just tested my tablet and it still works DHCP, nothing special on the tablet side. If i get a hot moment, I'll go back to stock and re-do the process to see if I yield other results but, for now I recommend trying again, clear cache's and normal Android type stuff. Double check that XPosed and everything is working, rebooted etc..

No misconception. I got this working with XPosed Framework for Lollypop enabled and working, with Module Moto Tether installed and enabled. There really weren't any settings for Moto Tether other than having it enabled in Xposed.
Good luck.

Okay... I see some more potential confusion. The xposed framework module download is called x tether. There module after installation is called Moto Tether. Sorry if there was confusion. I'm on boost Mobile and its working.
Installed exposed and the x feather and modified the build prop, still can't get this to work. Do I need to do what the OP listed also?

I did do all of that as you listed in the OP. I was unable to get internet connectivity through tethering. It would only create the hotspot but didn't provide internet connectivity itself.

Yes seems pretty easy to do on this version of the Moto E. I put my page plus sim in before activated on Verizon, XT 1528 and the native Wi-Fi hotspot option works beautifully for free apparently.

Apologies for the cut-off post there.. Had to register to leave a post of greater length.. Anyway, as I was saying:
I changed the value of "ro.mot.tether_dun_required" to "0", and added the line "net.tethering.noprovisioning=true" to the end of the "build.prop" file using the app "build.prop editor" offa the Play Store.. That's it! Worked for me, hope it does for you, as I haven't been able to find any working fixes for my particular model of the Moto E.

Great Job BRO..It worked for me great
I recently acquired a Sprint-Prepaid branded moto e lte/2015/xt1526 and activated with no problem on RingPlus. I have LTE data on the phone no problem.
But I can't share via the WiFi hotspot. So I rooted, etc, etc, and tried the two build.prop tweaks suggested here. Still no joy.
I guess the phone's code has been updated to ignore those build.prop settings that make it all too easy to turn on Wifi-tethering.
Guess I'll try hacking telephony.db next, since running as either root or userid radio and invoking the APN settings editor via the am command yields a message that APN editing is not allowed for "this user".....
Any other bright ideas?

Do you have one of the Ring Plus plans that allow tethering?
If you can get stock working I would be interested in the steps needed.
If not, you should be able to use WiFi Tether Router - $2.80 from the play store and requires root.
OKAY. Thanks. I tried several other apps with similar names but genuine "WiFi Tether Router" for $2.80 seems to be working fine now on my xt1526 on Ringplus (Sprint)
I just carefully followed the config directions for Xt1526 and Sprint on the developer's webpages. (The out-of-the-box defaults do not work and I required a reboot to continue...)
(I would have paid more for this!)
Hooray. I won't confess how many hours I spent today trying various hacks. I learned a bit about adb and android. But not nearly enough. And oh by the way - I have been a professional Linux/C++/Java systems programmer/hacker for the last 10+ years. Haven't learned all the ins and outs of Android, since it's so darned easy to just download an app... Actually I use my Android Tablet, wifi Tethered to my phone, ssh'ing back to my computer at home (JuiceSSH highly recommended too!) to get my work done while waiting for the kids or wife at the mall...
I was using another phone on another carrier which only required a simple APN add the ",dun" string/edit to get that working -- but I couldn't pass up the practically free plans that Ringplus is offering...
My xt1526 is "stock" EXCEPT, I did the Moto unlock the bootloaders thing and "rooted" by fastbook/flashing a TWRP recovery image, also from this XDA board, of course.

How did you edit the build.prop without root on the VZW Moto E? Or is this only for first gen Moto? I have VZW Moto E 2nd gen, android 5.1, activated with my postpaid sim.
thanks for any advice!

I have a rooted Sprint pre-paid xt1526 comes with a stock Boost mobile firmware on a Ring+ plan with no tethering. Hotspot functionality is there and I can turn it on. I can connect other devices to it, but traffic doesn't reach to the internet.
I actually only need to modify the iptables every time after reboot to enable forwarding and NAT. Works perfect. "Wifi Tether" app works too, but it is a battery killer.
Tried everything everyone has said and still can't get it working. Device connects to hotspot but isn't allowed internet access. Any ideas?

New Update With Few Tips & Hotspot Mod {CRL2}

Hey All,
I had to update this thread a little it was pretty terrible on wording and full details. (Sorry About That)
The current hotspot hack still works on this new update too which is now CRL2.
You still need to add dun but it will look like this example below....
Ex: default, mms, dun, xcap, supl << Credits to whoever found this out first I just applied it to here and it works I’m currently using it now for this post :fingers-crossed::good:
*In order to edit your APN you will have to download Quick Shortcut App from the Play store*
Another thing if you didn’t know Good Lock is out and working perfectly too with new clock options and custom pulldown options that you can set to your liking.
*I added screenshots to help set what I set or how my good lock looks.*
I have a T-Mobile S8+ on Sprint network, and OTA keeps failing.
Can I just ODIN T-Mobile S8+ with Sprint's RIB firmware when it comes out?
Will I lose data?

they was added by sprint in the newest update
it was not like this before the update
XCAP is a protocol which enables a user configuring his service data (e.g., modifying a call forwarding number, changing his barring services) on the Multimedia Telephony Application Server (MTAS). The XCAP flow is typically carried over the default bearer of the Internet APN.
SUPL is a technology which utilizes existing standards where available and possible, to transfer assistance data and positioning data over a User Plane bearer, such as IP, to aid network and SUPL Enabled Terminal (SET) based positioning technologies in the calculation of a SET's position

The new October Patch is nice so far....they have disabled Calling Plus but gave u the real feature
which is under connections and then voice networks and you will see VoLTE
turn it on if you want to use internet and phone at the same time.
Besides that we got AR Emojis and now super slow motion.

Is there a way to convert CRL2 to CRL 1?
This is still working on CRL2. I just redid mine last night. Are you having a problem with it?

MOD | WORKING Hotspot Mod for Pie on Sprint Note 9

Hello everyone,
A while back I posted an app that helped enable hot spot on our Note 9's. I never imagined the support I would receive. Thank you so much. That app no longer works in Pie and it seems as though Sprint has totally killed the ability to call up that activity within the LTE Settings apk. Well... I found a workaround...
You can do this directly in the settings of your phone with literally no installing of apps or mods of any kind. Simply add a new APN with the same settings as the APN2 LTE | EHRPD internet apn and add the ,dun as we have before, and you're golden. This still makes my app obsolete, but I am happy to share the information. Video link is below for you visual learners.

Please consider supporting me via YouTube subs, likes, and comments. Your support means the world to me and as a computer teacher in a small school, it literally helps me eat and keeps me motivated to continue this kind of work. I will never ask for money in exchange for information, simply a thanks on this post means more than you can imagine. You can also follow me on Twitter for faster updates to things like this.
Thank you and keep on modding!
When I enter the APN Settings screen, nothing is editable. I can't add another APN. Any ideaa?
I cant select the new apn
Same issue
APN setting all greyed out unable to revert to default or add new APN. Any work around?

The app works on "Oreo" and does not work on "P" if it doesn't work for you it might be because you took the update to P, you can always downgrade to Oreo if you really need this
Do you have to give them a reason you want it unlocked?
This works on unrooted.
Nicklegandhi, are you rooted?
Unlocked 512GB Samsung Galaxy Note 9 on Sprint
VoLTE and Hotspot worked on My Note 9 before Updating to Pie.
My Note 8 & 9 are Both Unlocked and never was on Any Lease or Payments. I bought them outright from Bestbuy.
Attached is the Picture as you can see, the Settings are Greyed Out, but I Can Add a New APN.
Are the APN Settings Exactly the same for the Note 8 & Note 9 in order to re-enable Both VoLTE and Hotspot?
You can do the following steps to change the APN (taken from @that.chris from the old thread on Oreo):
Dial ##3282#
Select Edit
Sprint MSL is 000000
Go to APN Settings
Add new APN, exactly like the current one but with dun this time (like in the video)
Choose new APN

I can't See or Access Any of the APN Settings because they are greyed out.
Can You Please take a Long Screenshot of the APN Setting and What to put in Each Line so it could be done Correctly.
See the Attached Picture. This is Exactly what I See when going to the Settings which I Can't Access, but I Can Add a New APN which can then be Edited.
The Second Picture is What I Can Add and Edit.
Please let Me and Everyone Know what to put on Each Line of the Second Picture.
This is what I have on mine, I tested hotspot through my Windows laptop and it was working great.

That's strange, I also have a U1 on Sprint running CSB3, but if I were you I would just copy the whole thing and add "dun" to the end.
