A mild jelly scrolling effect on OP 5 - OnePlus 5 Questions & Answers

Hi All,
I just got my new Oneplus 5. I am loving it. I feel there is a mild jelly scrolling effect with my device. It is not as severe as we have seen in some YouTube videos. It is only noticeable only if you pay more attention and observe more closely. Is it normal or there is some defect?
I am bit worried, should I ask for replacement or a bug fix in future will do?
Looking for suggestions.
Thanks

It's normal. It's because the display is mounted upside down. Some get used to it others don't.
Use the phone and see how you feel, you can send it back within 14 days.

So if it is happening with all the units of this phone it doesn't make sense to ask for a replacement

Guess not. Every OP5 has it. Let your eyes and brain get used to it. In the first day i experienced the same thing, but after a while it's gone (i mean it's still there, but for me it's gone) you know what i mean.

It's not like in the viral video but it's reaallly noticeable for me, much more than I was expecting. From all the mixed reports of it I do wonder if OP is using different panels for different manufacturing dates, where ones have more jelly effect than others. Mine was manufactured on 2017/06/16 and is the 64 GB version.
We'll see how it goes within the next 14 days but it's driving my OCD crazy. More noticeable in some situations than others, just finding it weird everything stretching out slightly when scrolling whereas this didn't happen in the OPO.
I guess it depends fully on your tolerance.

Mine is a June build 64gb and the screen jitters when scrolling. I put a replacement request in. Still waiting to hear back from OP. Hopefully I get a newer build because it looks like users of the newer midnight Black 128gb builds aren't complaining about this.

Yeah that's what I thought too but I didn't find it justifiable buying the 128 GB version at least for me... I do wonder if they have different panels on more recent builds. Wouldn't like to go through the return process but this is really a weird effect.

Had mine for a month now. Havent noticed any sort of jelly effect. Not even if i try really hard to produce it.

I read that OnePlus used OnePlus3 displays on the OnePlus 5 to save money so it's unlikely the phones with different build dates have different displays since the displays weren't even made for this phone in the first place. If you believe the rumors about the OnePlus 5T you should probably return the OnePlus 5 while you can. Knowing OnePlus the 5T will have the display that this phone should have had in the first place.

Mine is September build as written on package. Still have the jelly scroll effect. I don't think if newer panels are not having this effect.

With all respect, I don't know where people see a mild jelly scrolling effect. I'm using my 128gb 8gb for 2 weeks and I didn't seen any thing like that.

I can the effect in a YouTube video of it but its very hard for me to notice whilst using my op5

built in june. absolutely no jelly effect here. i came from lg g pro with ips screen, and i didnt see any difference in the jelly effect. same with my wife' s op3.
64gb.

Mass Placebo Effect on Lag

Seriously I have yet to experience any lag. I've heard much less on the subject for the 12 edition in the galaxy note than the new 14 edition of the note and I've used both daily for high intensity work applications. My 12 edition has been rooted deodexed debloated and is still way slower than my 14 edition unrooted stock. I have to say either xda has been hijacked by apple fans or those early reviews really put a bunch of people with a very critical outlook. Anyway I'm enjoying it......just my 37 dollars in change

I think people may have been hypersensitive to lag after the first few main reviews seemed to focus on the lag in the My Magazine app and a few other samsung apps. I know I was looking for it right out of the box because of them. I don't see much at all and consider it a very fast tablet that will probably only get faster in time

Ah yes that too...forgot about that!
What I didn't like about all reviews that complained about the lag was that they had no videos of it like they normally do in reviews, so I called BS from thr start. It felt like everyone just wanted to bash Samsung because they weren't Apple.
the 2012 edition had lots of reviews with lag. i believe the verge caught hell because they wined about the lag but had battery saving turned on. the defended themselves and said the lag was still there after turning it off.
there is real lag in the device, especially in heavy graphic websites. but since this lag/stutter seems to be there in every android device i've had i'd say it's an android thing instead of device specific - i'm at 21 android tablets owned at one time or another. it's on phones too, even on the snapdragon s4 but phones are so small that the stutters and imperfections are reduced to the point they're not as noticeable.
one thing i noticed yesterday is that holding the tablet vertically (portrait) induced less lag in reading the desktop version of theoldreader than holding it landscape. i'm sure there was another tablet that was under fire for not using the gpu equally in vertical and horizontal orientation.
also, i'm still on the shipped rom as i haven't taken the update yet, so some of my issues may be fixed after the update.
It appears to be one app causing the lag and not the UI or anywhere else. Some of the reviews even point out it is probably a problem with the third party app. Some kind of photo album app?
As far as the device IMO:
1. Priced $50 too high for both verisons. Seems that should have been prices for a 32/64 gb model.
2. Why no 3.0 USB? This must be produced in a different place, else would have had same connector as the Note 3.
3. Should have had a a little bigger battery.
4. Even though no 3.0, NICE there is a standard usb rather than special connector- I hate those.
5. Too much bloat (as usual)
6. Why no HDMI out??
I was going to get the Asus 701, but I know it will have a special connector and apparently will be different than the 700 version. I will probably wait for the 32GB Samsung 2014 version to be at a lower price during some kind of sale, or whatever. My Nook HD+ will cover my Android needs for now. I also have an iPad 4 that covers commercial gaming. HD+ is for comics, video and emulators.

With the second update, Samsung has solved the problems of lag?

With the second update, Samsung has solved the problems of lag?
Samsung has released the second update for this tablet (Note 10.1 2014),
It is true that is fine as butter?
No more problems with lag?
Everything is as smooth as we would like?
The PDF with lots of data and photos
move perfect?
A greeting
The second update screwed up my SGN pretty bad. It black screens, apps won't update, wifi is spotty, web pages won't load, tablet won't unlock properly and when it does, it does to black screen. For this having such high specs, it runs slower than my N7 2012 on half the stuff. At least Apex works well so I don't have the lag but over all I wish I would have never bought this tablet. I wish I would have waited for the Dell Venue Pro 8. In fact with Nokia really producing some great phones and Windows 8.1 fixing most of the issues I had with Win8, this will probably be the last Android device I ever own. I have a Nokia 928 and it is heads above any Android phone I have ever owned from quality to speed to camera and now with the 1520 coming out (929 for Verizon) coupled with a real proc that can run full W8.1 in the new Atom, I can't see why I would accept so many compromises from Android anymore. While I love the stylus capability of my Note, I have major buyers remorse.
I have had the exact opposite experience of the person above. No problems at all. This tablet has been one of the best pieces of tech that I have bought in a while.

Did you get the second update yet? It was about 9mb and I got it on mine about 4 or 5 days ago? I'm just wondering if I have a faulty model or if I just need to do reset (talk about a pain in the arse). Before this last update my tablet was awesome.

TheBigSaxon my friend, I see that your tablet works perfectly,
does not have the lag that everyone comments?
how about from this second update?
Read the friend ajamudc and do not want to buy this tablet

i saw 0 difference in each update. i held on to the original firmware for a week before upgrading and no significant increase or decrease in performance.
rooting did nothing either, but i don't expect it to. it just allowed to to freeze crap and install some useful programs.

Yeah, I took the second update and didn't have any issues. I would try a factory reset. Maybe you got a bad download? Maybe someone else can chime in, but I haven't seen anybody else describe the issues you are describing.
I don't know what the "out of the box" performance was like. I've only had mine a few days. When I first booted it up, it prompted me to update and I went ahead. It rebooted, then prompted me to update again, and again, I went ahead and updated. So, I never used it before either update for comparison sake. But, I will say that this is the best tablet I've ever used! Before this, I had a piece of crap ASUS Transformer Infinity which I hated because it was a piece of crap. Before that I had a Galaxy Tab 10.1 (the original) which I loved and wished I had back every time I touched the ASUS. So it may just be coming from the Transformer, but the Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) feels buttery smooth to me. I love it more and, even after only a couple days, I find myself using it for much more than I ever used either of my previous tablets for.
I echo HeathicusF's experience. I never ran the Galaxy without the two updates as they downloaded as soon as I turned on the tablet. I also upgraded from the Transformer TF700 and while I didn't have the same negative feelings about the ASUS, the Galaxy is far and away superior. No lag at all, a beautiful screen and the multi window make this the best tablet I've owned or seen. I would recommend it to anyone.

This is where I feel that perception of lag is relative. I get choppiness when I pull down the notification bar often and when I hit the home button it will take a half second to go to the home screen and the fade out transition animation will be really laggy. I have a hard time believing that other people aren't getting this too, maybe they just don't notice it the same as others do.
It's just odd that there will be a thread on lag and someone will say theirs is perfect with no lag ever and others will say its terrible. I am guessing all units are the same (with the exception of a faulty one) but it's just everyone's own critical eye that is the difference. I am overall pretty happy with it, a little extra fluidity would be great though...
I'm experiencing no lag, except for the wake button taking about 2 to 3 seconds to have any effect.
The only thing I am perplexed about is that when I exit out of an app, the homescreen wallpaper is screwy. It shifts and there are black bars on either side before it settles down into the regular wallpaper look. Very annoying.
And whenever I exit out of LectureNotes, for some reason, the wallpaper is completely gone. Just black space.
I'm not sure if I'm just not as picky as others but after the 1st and 2nd update this thing is pretty fast to me. The only thing I do see that others have mentioned is that sometimes it may take a second or two to wake from lock. But I now have a case with the wake upon opening the cover thing so it's ready to go by the time I have the cover flipped to the back. No biggie

it's all about how you use it. i used to use feedly as my rss reader but switched back to the old reader since i prefer using a tabbed browser vs an app (i know i can use feedly's full web, but i've gotten to like the old reader). on ff, i get minor stuttering as it marks articles read, on chrome it's bad tot he point that i give up. if i turn it portrait the lag goes away. in neither orientation is it as smooth as my gn8, gn2, or s4 and this is supposed to be a more powerful product (granted it does have more pixels to push).
on "normal" webistes, it's just as good as my other tablets/phones though.
@Han Solo 1: You are hiding the system bar in LectureNotes, aren't you? That a static wallpaper gets reset is a known issue when hiding the system bar in newer Android versions. To my knowledge, there is no fix. Curiously, the wallpaper recovers if you reboot, and a live wallpaper is not affected.
it seems there are different opinions
there who is going perfectly and without lag
and others who do very bad and many lag
I'm about to buy
(I once had the Note 10.1.'s have sold)
I do not know if the Nexus wait 10
I'm not experiencing any lag after the two updates. Notification bar is fine even if I choose to open and close it endlessly for whatever reason. I think some you guys should hard reset, or stop installing garbage apps I dunno. I just don't believe in all these lag posts, sorry.

I don't believe it either. Everything single-window is super smooth for me. Now if I multitask with lecture notes and ezpdf there is some lag which is kind of annoying but about the same as it was on my old note 10.1. Still waiting for someone to rom this thing down the road. Might root soon instead just to get rid of all the worthless samsung bloat.
Yeah it is bloated via Samsung for sure. I've watched hd movies while surfing, I've been gaming the latest being Dead Trigger 2 and it's been great. I want to root to remove some bloat and hope someone gets the old multi window hack to add all programs. I cannot recommend this tablet enough....
I got to test a 16GB white version for 45 "whole" minutes. Must admit I noticed lag with the UI, but none when using apps. The lag went away when using Nova. Besides some UI lag, the tablet is faster than the Tegra 4's tested. Easily the fastest for game emulators. The UI is IMO the issue here. Should be stock Android, IMO.
I want one of these, but would get the 32gb version, so $636 counting tax. Boo! I like my Nook HD+ 32GB, but this is WAY better. Just not $450 better (cost difference between the two).
This makes my iPad 4 less appealing now, since even faster for apps and same display love. If I could have only one tablet though, it would now be the Sammy 2014.

My Xperiz Z3 (D6616) Experience

Hey everyone,
So, I've acquired my Z3 from Tmo on Oct 29th, the day it was released. Thus far, I've pretty happy with it. The battery is amazing, although I know it will last me over a day, or more, I'm stuck in my old habits of charging...which I am attempting to get used to better battery life. Anywho, here's my cons with this phone:
-I was using a Samsung Galaxy S3 (T999). The touch screen worked great. This phone though, I've had delays or my touches not being noticed. More so when I first turn the phone on to the lockscreen. If I give it about 10 seconds, it will respond to all touches.
-Along the same lines as the lockscreen not acknowledging all my touches, this also happens during various games or apps. Playing Arcane Legends, for instance, when I attempt to move, sometimes it doesn't. If I retry two or three times, it will then start working.
-I also get crackling sounds during calls, not all the time, but it is often enough. Also, when I have the touch sounds enabled and speakers plugged into it, it often also makes crackling sounds.
-Had many more settings to choose from when I was using Cyanogenmod 11 on my SGS3. I would figure this to be the case, but I do miss some settings, especially some Security-based ones. Maybe there are secret menus?
-I also wished that the LED was brighter... in my opinion it is really dim.
With all that being said, and knowing that Android L is on the way in a few months, I'm more than willing to wait to see is these issues are resolved. If not, I'll be getting a hold of Sony support to resolve these issues.
I'm curious if any of you have had these issues and if you've found workarounds.
As far as the pros, they outweigh the cons noted above. Battery is awesome, responsiveness if awesome, the overall experience is awesome. Works well with anything that I throw at it and its still goes beyond that.
Thanks,
Johnathan

I'd like to also add, that as far as functionality of the phone itself, the rotating flaps for the exposed ports seems to be a little flimsy and can easily break. This worries me a bit that if they are accidentally snapped off due to slight mishandling... you'll lose your waterproofing.
Also, I don't like that the volume options when using the volume up and down buttons isn't more granular. For instance, when I wanted to increase the SMS notification volume, I had to go through Setting instead of having more volume options when the buttons are pressed. Did I miss a setting?
Considering getting it replaced to see if that's the issue with the touchness delay or crackling sounds.
Thanks,
Johnathan

Elysian893,

Waiting for my DK48 magnetic dock to arrive, which will alleviate my concern.

Johnathan,
I've experienced some crackling/popping when on a call without using my headset. After a reboot though, it seems to have gone away. The last 2 days, my battery began lasting no more than 5-6 hours. I thought that it might have something to do with an app, so I began experimenting and found that the Sony Photo upload service was hanging, and also Lookout was scanning everything constantly. I uninstalled Lookout and disabled the Sony uploads and things seem to have returned to normal, although I will need another day or so to evaluate.
FWIW, here is my review I posted over the weekend:
___________________________________________
Never owned a Sony phone but now I "have a Sony for my Owny" (older folks will get this line)! I must say - I am in love with one caveat - that being a locked bootloader. Pretty disappointed in that however I was happy to read a page or 2 back that I will likely still be able to root which is really all I care about. That said, the bloatware on the D6616 is minimal, so aside from liking to try out new ROM's and removing ads, I guess I can live with that one "caveat".
The phone itself is gorgeous - in fact, I told my wife that it's almost as sexy as she is (yeah - I take my phone's pretty seriously )! I love its size - I had a OnePlus One which I was pretty happy with, but being an average size guy (that's being generous), I found it really difficult to use it with one hand. The Z3 has a slightly smaller screen size vs the OPO, but the overall build size is proportionally smaller as well, making it even more attractive size-wise. Of course, the other side of that coin is that the OPO has a non-slip back in the 64gb version which was really nice, however I see that wearing out over time. The Z3 is slippery meaning I will likely cover the beautiful beast with a case - but we'll see if I end up keeping a case on it. I've always been one to believe that if you have insurance and a beautiful device, covering that device with a case is counter-intuitive. I'm torn on the case thing - time will tell.
The phone is incredibly smooth and responsive, the speaker is pretty loud and sounds good, and the camera is arguably the best available on a phone. Not sure I like all the options the camera offers - many or pretty hokey - but the picture quality is just brilliant. Overall, this phone may last me more than a year which would beat my last two phones. You see, I have "NewPhone-itus" and it's a serious case!
If anyone has any questions - fire away and I will do my best to answer!
I'm surprised at the z3 hate on xda. With all the complaints about the camera, build quality, software issues, etc, I find myself getting paranoid looking for problems with the phone. The truth is that it's a pretty great phone so far. Great battery, great camera, fast and responsive, and yes, as sexy as shermcraigs wife ?. A week in and I'm happy with my trade from my m8.

Its not that the phone itself is bad per say, its the lack of consistency/quality control. I am on my 4th one here due to various issues from indented frame to bad camera to light bleed to massive screen gaps. Thanks to T-Mobile 14 day policy I was able to through so many phones. A rep had to open 5-6 phones to give me a good one when I got my third only to find it has a massive ligh tleak on on side. The one I got today thank god is finally issueless so far at least. My local T-Mobile store is sending many back to Sony, they are actively opening boxes, checking for defects and returning before even giving to customers.
I have owned phones from practically every company, this is the first time I have had to return a phone, let alone 3. All companies have issues with initial batches but this was just too widespread. I am sure future batches will be rectified, its one of the down sides of immediately adopting a new model as soon as release.

I am sure future batches will be rectified, its one of the down sides of immediately adopting a new model as soon as release.

But you have to pay for restocking fee of $50?

Johnathan,
I've experienced some crackling/popping when on a call without using my headset.

I would seriously doubt it - he was exchanging a bad unit,
not returning. Big difference.

No fees, because its a defect and you are asking for the same model. Fee is only if you switch models.

Did you do it within the first 14 days?
Maybe color change constitutes the equivalent of model change.

yup within 14days
I haven't experienced any lag with the touch screen, but I've experienced slow screen rotation.

My sister exchanged her white GS4 for another white one due to yellowish tint on top, they did it for free. I think because you just wanted a color change and there was no defect they charged you.
I have T-Mobile.
My only gripe is that there is no Group MMS built in. It really, really sucks. And it is causing me to return this phone in a few days. I can use Textra (or Google Hangouts) for Group MMS, but it will not send them out when WiFi Calling is enabled. I know there is a "WiFI Calling fix" option specifically for T-Mobile phones when using Textra, but all that does is disable WiFi when sending/receiving MMS messages and then re-enables it. That completely defeats the purpose of WiFI Calling if you're not going to have service in a certain area.
Group MMS is extremely important to me. For whatever reason, only stock messaging apps have the capability of utilizing T-Mobile's WiFi Calling to send/receive MMS. (SMS works fine).
My HTC One m7 had the ability to do it with its stock messaging app. So, for now, I have no choice but to return my phone, fight the $50 restocking fee, and go back to my paid off HTC One. I am speechless that this phone does not support it.

Jelly effect update

I am planning to buy a oneplus 5 8gb version. But I am confused with the jelly scroll effect which has been in the news when the phone is released. Is this defect fixed on the new phones or is it still there. pls help me decide whether to buy or not. thanks in advance.
It was never a defect, just the screen put upside down. I have the phone since it came out, after a couple of days I got used to it. I don't think they 'fixed' this..
Other then that you won't regret it
It's been almost 2 months I'm using this device. That jelly scrolling is barely noticeable on my device. Never had any problem with that.
You may even like the jelly effect.
compared to my old LG Gpro with a IPS LCD screen, I didnt see any difference with my OP5 nor my wife's op3, at least nothing very noticable.
I guess there's nothing to worry about.
Most people don't even notice the effect, if you even have it. Still not totally convinced all phones have. If all phones do, there is certainly varying degrees of severity.
The only way I can see it is if backlight is low, I have dark theme, and I'm in the app drawer. Otherwise, I can't see it.
I brought Oneplus 5 some days back & its working flawless. No jelly effect. I think they have fixed it
I buy it thinking that when i got it the first time would be to check the jelly efect. I had the phone for a day and completely forgot it until i red the forum again and tested it, you can see it only if you scroll fast up and down and you look very carrefully. I don't see it in the normal usage.
Also some people may confuse the jelly with this :https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8KVOvsE_l2Y . Which i have seen on every amoled phone i tested, not a lot.
Honestly, you'll notice it for about 20 minutes then you'll never see it again.
I got the phone for 5 day's ago and although I did see it slightly the first few days....I'm not noticing it anymore.
You really do get used to it I guess.
Thanks a lot for the reply. Looks like I don't need to worry about the jelly anymore. This is what I love about oneplus. Great community support...

Yep! I can also confirm I don't see any jelly on my device either, pull the trigger on this device, you won't be disappointed!
update ruined it
Its very noticeable in TWRP menus, other than that its fine when running android
you will notice the jelly only if you scroll around and pay attention to it . I would say that the commumity is exaggerate this. You will not notice it on a daily usage. (if you dont focus on it nonstop)
You'll notice it for a couple of days if you're particularly paranoid or use other phones through your day, but even that becomes unnoticeable after a while So go on, get it, you will not be disappointed
I got used to it to the point that it looks just like any normal phone. I don't think you should worry about it. For me, it took about 2 weeks before I tell myself, I think it was gone. But if I pay attention, I'll definitely see it.

OP5T "Likely" Not to have Jelly Effect/Scroll stuttering.

I Sold my OP5, just because at times it had slight jelly effect or less than smooth scrolling, can be stuttering, i was sensitive to it, may be because it was pointed it.
Sources are saying, OP5T, Likely not have this issue, they are not sure yet, but likely, what do you guys think about it?
Do you guys care?

Well, if this rainbow effect turns on at angel close to 90 degree, then it shout not be an issue, as i yet to use my phone at this extreme angle. Amoled will shift to blue/green or colors at this angle anyways.
I think jelly effect, stutter in scrolling, early screen burning, non uniform screen at any color straight on are things i guess which can cause issues while using phone.
If screen is issue less, and phone has no major flaw/issue. It can be a decent buy for those who like stock UI, cleaner looks and can tolerate or make use of Android's benefits.
Android Central mentions no jelly effect in their video review of the phone (guessing written as well).

That's very good, hopefully this phone may not have any major wide spread issue with anything, i sold my A5000 two weeks ago for 430$ and i am without a phone, as i can't find any options other than 5T. I don't like Pixel 2 XL design as well as screen vulnerabilities.
Are you selling or keeping your A5000? Sadly i was one of the view who could notice screen jittering in A5000.

I'm keeping mine for now as I'm a little worried the camera doesn't really offer any improvement (main reason I would upgrade).

Yes and there is No Jelly Screen on 5T a few Reviews has also commented on jelly screen not being a problem this time
Lol. This again?
Just to put this to an end, I used the phone upside down and it has the jelly effect, so this phone is perfectly fine and the screen is assembled the way it should be.

Thats good, i hope this phone has no major issue or inherit fault, i can get it when it lands in Pakistan Unofficially.
There are two guys having issue with scrolling, i hope they are talking about scrolling speeds, not miss taps.

Well I'm very picky when it comes to screens and this is easily the best screen I ever had on a phone. Perfect colors, good viewing angles and 100% uniformity, no purple, pink, yellow or whatever hue I had on all my previous phones.
I noticed the jelly on all op5 phones I've seen but the 5t doesn't have this "feature". It's a great display.
