Weird QR Code after factory reset - Essential Phone Questions & Answers

I played around with my phone for a few days and when I decided to set it up for good I did a factory reset and got these weird screens with a QR code after bootup. I didn't even get a setup wizard or anything so I reset again and got the same thing. I can bypass this screen and login, but I didn't get a normal setup screen like I should have. Anyone seen this behavior?

Can anyone tell me if they get the standard setup wizard after a factory reset? I have reset several times and I get this QR code every time even when resetting through recovery. I want to find out if I should escalate this with support and get a replacement device.

Did you try scanning the code?

Interesting.
I set mine up multiple times and never got that.

Try factory resetting through recovery.

yep this is what the code shows:

I deleted the serial and device ID, but they were there too.

I did do that. I mentioned it in post #2.

I posted this on Reddit too and an essential support person replied. Apparently this is some factory test mode the phone was locked in. The fix was to ignore the QR code when it popped up and hold the power button till the phone restarts and it will enter the normal OOBE. I've reset it 3 times to be sure and it's working right now.

Never seen that but that sure is interesting. Wonder how you ran into it and if it had any possible way to access the device to do a dump while in it?
Oh well.

I don't think my phone was ever taken out of that mode from the factory. When I booted it up new out of the box it went straight to the homescreen. So I played with it for a day or so with my sim card in it. Then I was like ok I guess I'll sign in but I'll reset so I can get a backup restored. And when it rebooted it went to that screen. If I clicked that green button and then ok it went straight to the homescreen. That QR code only came back each time I factory reset the phone.

I am facing the same issue on Nokia 1. Does anyone have a solution for this?

see 3 posts above yours.
(if that doesn't work you'll have to ask on Nokia forum for your phone or contact Nokia as this forum is for Essential Phones)

This used to happen all the time on the Q beta when going the fastboot route, I haven't seen it even when running stable Q stock. Moral of the story? Essential left that in for some unknown reason when it should have been removed

You should ask in the Nokia 1 Q/A forum. It's not likely you'll get help here in the Essential forum.

my screen turns "on" itself to standby mode

Hello, when it happens something that I do not understand with my N4.
Whenever I lock my N4 pressing the button the screen turns off after a few seconds but then (this is random) it turns back on itself, arises on the lockscreen (my home is a diagram) and shuts itself anew after 2 minutes (because it's my time to sleep after non-use).
It breaks my head.
Have you any idea?.
Any special app ?
I do not know, this is not for a particular app.
When I use my phone normally and I put it to sleep, it locks, but the screen turns off after a few seconds the screen turns on for no reason.
And this happens several times per hour alone.
Sorry for my bad english, i am french.
I have the exact same thing! It's annoying! I presume it's a program I installed, but I don't know which. And I'm too lazy to uninstall them one by one... Any program I can use to see what's waking the screen? I'm not rooted btw...
Yes I think that is the cause of a program but I do not know which.
Is there an application to list the process?
Have you installed 'flipturn' or whatever it's called app ?
I don't have an app called flipturn. I don't have any app that starts with the word flip...
Me too i dont have an app called flipturn..
If you don't have any "special" app, I would do a factory reset
It's not bothering me so much that I want to lose all my save data by doing a factory reset....
I had this issue and figured out how to fix it. Problem is, I don't remember how I fixed it. I think it was due to an app waking my phone. Check your apps to see if any of them have the permission to wake your device.

So I made the restoration, i havent had the problem for more than 24 hours (I know because I watched all the time to see if it was ok or not after each lock, I watched as the one for minute)
But since today is the problem recurred.
So what I'll do, I'll redo a restore with the factory image but not new to reinstall my applications because it has to be somewhat of a blind application of the play.
Because I do not think the problem is hardware or it will be declared soon after the restoration, or it is returned after a ten hour (just after installing all my applications because I do not make on).
Its an apk, I had that problem with this apk..

I wish I had that app so I could just remove it. Unfortunately I've never installed that app so must be another app.

[Q] Serious Problem: Galaxy S4 I9500 Lockscreen Shutdown Enabled

Hello everyone, this is my first post on xda forums. I hope someone out there might be able to help me out.
I accidentally found out that on my galaxy s4 I9500 lock screen, I can still press and hold power button and it gives me options to power off/restart my phone. I have pattern lock enabled. I tried and successfully powered off the phone straight from my lock screen, not to mention that it scared me out. What if it gets stolen? Anybody can turn if off and I wont be able to track it down or enable any thing via SMS commands etc.
What's the purpose of lock screen if the phone can be turned off, if not unlocked, and I couldn't do anything about it.
I recently updated android 4.4 and I am not sure whether or not this issue persisted before that. I am attaching a screenshot of it. Looking forward for someone to sort this out for me. Thanks.

Did you just find out after reading this post or were you aware of it before?
And have you not thought that even if it is as you describe what is the benefit
not so great
If someone steals your phone much easier to remove the battery and that is even faster than pressing buttons
this is just my personal opinion

Yes, you're absolutely right, but then again it raises a big question mark on all the tracking and anti-theft apps as well as Google's own android device manager feature a bunch of crappy apps which do no good at all except for playing sirens via laptop on your own phone and thinking it actually works.
Plus if the thief is within the room, he wont go through all the trouble of removing the protective case, back cover and then removing battery itself. He'd simply turn it off and wait.
It has been like this since I can remember, way before 4.4. In GS3 and GS4, probably in SGII too, this I don't remember.

I'd be lucky to have my phone stuck in landscape mode Cuz usually you can't do that on the launcher without a rotation locker app. But anyway, try restarting your phone. If your lock screen goes sideways immediately, or your boot animation goes sideways before the lock screen, it has to be a system setting or kernel declaration. If your lockscreen stays portrait for >5 seconds but then goes sideways, it's an APP that's doing it!! Check for any games you've installed, any games that lock sideways and force quite them+clear data. See if that does it.
Post back your results, and I'll try to help you more,

I tied all the usual tricks. Restarts, battey pull, eben went into bootloader and cleared cache. No go. Have no clue how it hppened and couldnt seem to remedy. I ended up doing a factory restore. All good for now.
Forgot to backup my apps and so its taking a bit longer to get back to my old setup

That's weird.. a problem that shouldn't require a factory reset. I'm sure it was some app with load-on-boot privilege or some setting somewhere. I'd still like to know what caused it.

I couldn't find anything. I looked everywhere. It was weird because i had just pulled it out of my pocket to check the time. Lockscreen looked the same as always. I noticed i had a missed sms so I unlocked it to respond and was then stuck in landscape. I didn't notice if it went right to landscape or not. Funny thing is I could rotate the screen 180 and the image would be totally inverted. Made me think the gyroscope sensor was on the fritz. Wasn't there a way they could be calibrated in the past?
what launcher are you using?
Switch back to stock TouchWiz to validate if it's hardware issue - but it's most likely just a setting in your launcher.

Long tap on it and select "App info", then tap "Turn Off" button to disable it.
I also turned off "Samsung Link" app on my Note 3.
Tried clear cache, so far so good
Edit: Clear cache did not work, had to freez the app using Titanium
hm
Ok so looks like the best idea is to disable the app so will do that.
Is there any reason why i might not want to do that though what dose the app actually do and it really should just work the first place should it not? ??

Help- master reset took away unlock status!!!

I have a sprint phone working on the tmobile network since October without any issue until last week when i have to send it to samsung to repair the speaker. Got the phone this morning and it seems that samsung did a master reset and revert the unlock status. The funny things is that i called sprint few times today and the phone appear unlock on their system and told me that there was nothing they could do that i should call samsung. The Costumer service rep from samsung told me that it was posible that the master reset reverted the unlock status and that she created a case #bc she didnt know how to fix this and that someone will contact me regarding this issue in the next 72hrs.
I spent about 4 hr calling sprint, samsung and tmobile trying to fix thus issue and they for the most part just play ping-pon with me so if someone know how to fix this issue please let me know
Thanks
