Edge Screen: Useful? Gimmick? - Samsung Galaxy S7 Guides, News, & Discussion

The flexible and curved screen technologies came out a few years ago, but there wasn't much practical use for them. These were solutions waiting for problems. That's cool. Even the giant curved screen TVs that came out since then seem to be useful only if you plan on viewing the TV from a four meter distance. That makes sense.
But the Galaxy Edge screen? "Uhhhhhh, okay, it's cute, but can we move along now?"
People seem to love their Galaxy Edge screens, but I honestly don't get it -- at all! I'm definitely a function-over-form kind of guy, and so I don't want the edges of my screen wraping around the sides of the device and facing away from me. Because this is less than optimal design, it actually looks ugly to me. So, it seems it's only function is to be a gimmick to sell more product to people who are more form-over-function than function-over-form.
This is my opinion, and other opinions may differ.
So now that Samsung is not offering their new Galaxy devices without the Edge wrap-around screens, I won't be buying them until they bring back the flat screens.
Are there some other practical uses for the screen wrapping around half of the device's side? And are these uses worth the trade off of sacrificing pixels that face you when viewing your screen normally?
If Samsung really must continue the gimmick I hope they get wise and bring back totally flat screen as a Galaxy product option.
That's my feelings, but what do others think about curved edges vs flat?

Really don't like curved edges either, I think it looks nice but functionally I'd just prefer flat. Also makes cases weird as they have to cut around the curved sides.

Gimmick I personally HATE curved displays. You can't fully protect it with tempered glass. There are curved ones but those have glue only on the edges not whole panel. It also gives ugly light reflexes. I believe that was designed to eliminate decent screen protection and make devices less shatter proof. I hope there will be flat Galaxy S9 if not i will probably (sadly) abandon samsung. 2,5D is a BS also

gimmick, i hate it. hard to protect with case, makes replacement screen more expensive too

Screen Protectors?

So this phone is made with gorilla glass, do you guys think that we're gonna need a screen protector for it? I mean, it was only $199, so.... thoughts?

Like all Blu phones, it comes with screen protectors and a case in the box. I'm sure there will be third party protectors cases out eventually.

I picked up a few extra front and back protectors on eBay today. Always a good idea if you aren't going to use a case...even with G glass.

Personally, I never use screen protectors or cases for my phones. I still have my Samsung Fascinate (Galaxy S) and other than a few gouges in the plastic surround and some very light scratches, it's fine. That's a phone that I've dropped and outright thrown towards the ground (by accident, of course) multiple times. I would say that the Galaxy SIII just as strong, except the SIII's larger size and grippier plastic meant that it fell out of my hands a LOT less often than the Fascinate. (Disclaimer: my SIII did get smashed up, but it was my fault for leaving it somewhere I shouldn't have and it was destroyed by a very large force.) My LG Volt is a very cheap phone. It's more susceptible to scratching, as its screen is some sort of cheap plastic, but even that phone has withstood a few drops and frequent pocket traffic without any major problems.
I keep my right pocket free of everything but my phone. So perhaps if you're throwing keys in there with the phone, or other objects, your results may vary, but I always like to keep my phone separate to keep it nice, with the side benefit of making it easier to pull out without extra stuff in that pocket.
I've had great luck with the Gorilla Glass though. The plastic on my other phones definitely took more of a beating than the glass itself, and it's worth noting that when I was using the Fascinate, I was working in irrigation where my phone got accidentally tossed around quite a bit, in rocks and dirt, and it still looks great. And again, the physical shape of that phone made it much more prone to coming out of my hands than something like the SIII or Vivo Air.
I wish the Air had the length and width of the SIII, which makes it an easy phone to hold IMO, and the glass back isn't quite as grippy as the smooth plastic on the SIII, but I don't forsee any major issues having held the phone for a while now, and the Air has the benefit of being lighter which seems to help keep it in my hands a bit better (in other words, if it were the same size and shape, but with the weight of the SIII, I feel like it would be a bit more prone to falling out of my hand).
All of this being said, I think what it boils down to is how you treat your phone and what you expect out of it. If you treat it relatively carefully, and don't expect perfect glass after a year, then I don't see the problem with using it naked. If you're prone to breaking screens, then by all means get something but I don't actually think a screen protector will help you. I repair phones and tablets for a living and I see all sorts of shattered screens, yet I've never shattered a screen on my own. Personally, I'm not going to put anything on the Air because I dislike cases that add bulk to the size (the size is part of the reason why I bought it) and I feel that screen protectors do more to interfere with touch input than anything else.
It's kind of like when someone buys a TV and doesn't remove the plastic wrap that's meant to keep it looking nice during shipping, and then ten years later it's peeling badly and there's dust and junk sticking to it.. Yeah, it may still look great once you peel it all off but since it's still there, it looks like crap and it's time to junk the TV anyway, so what good did leaving that plastic on actually do? I replace shattered iPhone and iPad digitizers all the time on devices that have screen protectors on them. Screen protectors don't protect the glass from excessive shock.
All in all, I think the Air is a phone that fits very well in my hands and definitely feels grippy enough not to have to worry about dropping. Because of that, and due to its extremely sleek shape and style, I feel like it's a crime to weigh it down with bulky protectors. I'm going to use it as-is and if anything happens to it, a replacement is only $200, which is not a bad price really. I'm confident I can use the phone for at least a year without causing any major problems, which is good enough for me for a $200 phone (especially since I paid $125 for this Volt and it's unusable after only about 6 months).
PS- Sorry for the wall of text.

Designed to sit face down?

I have a Moto X Pure at the moment, but I'm considering returning it for a Nexus 6P.
One thing I like about the MXP is that the speaker/mic/earpiece grilles extend slightly beyond the surface of the glass, and the top/bottom of the screen curve outward slightly so that you can't scratch the screen on any grit that may be on the surface you sit the phone down on.
My last few phones have had design elements like this, and I've come to appreciate being able to safely sit the phone on its face when I don't want to be distracted.
Does the N6P have any design elements like this? Or does sitting it face down mean direct contact with the screen glass?
Glass will touch when face down.

Most cases or bumpers have a raised edge to remedy. Screen doesn't touch with my Adopted or Speck cases....
Urg. I never use cases, so I'd definitely have to change the way I handle my phone a bit.
Thanks for the answer!

Note 4 Screen

It has been 7 months with this phone and when shine it under certain light,
I can see and use my hand to feel the minor scratches on the screen
Why is this happening?
Isnt this gorilla glass 4?
Gorilla Glass is nothing but a marketing hype. I didn't notice under sunlight but under an LED and was shocked too! At least a dozen micro bruises, which can't be felt, nor can be seen when display is on, so display experience is not affected in any way but just looking at the screen when display is off is not really a good experience, especially for someone like me who can't stand anything but a 100% perfect display.
So basically you can't do much other than not carrying your phone with keys, coins etc., and make sure nothing hard or sort of objects come in touch with the display, and just apply a protective screen, tempered glass will be a PITA for Note 4's display being a 2.5D one, so just get one of those plastic type ones, should do the job.

Yup the feeling seeing your phone screen having minor bruise is pain
Btw thanks for the tip

No tempered glass makes me a sad panda :(

Jesus these curved screen phones are pissing me off, I kid you not.
I'm a huge fan of tempered glass screen protectors , In fact it's a deal breaker for me.
I hate the feel of PET or TPU screen protectors with their magical self healing properties, they feel soft and sticky..not smooth.
I don't have particularly enormous hands so i want a small..ish 5.1" to 5.2" phone with a good Screen to body ratio.
I can't believe how hard it is now to find a FLAT SCREENED small..ish FLAG SHIP phone.
They are all huge 5.5" to 37" bloody screens.
I have an S6 EDGE and i love the phone, I love how fast it is, I love the Camera.
Don't get me wrong I'm not a Samsung Fanboy, I HATE hardware buttons , I HATE TOUCHJIZZ (Thank god for Xposed Framework, at least i can manage resolution) But most of all i HATE the freaking shape of the back of the phone (Hold it long enough without a case and it leaves a dent in your hand it's so sharp) and i HATE the shape of the curved screen.
Even with a terrible PET screen protector i find the keyboard is occasionally unresponsive.
I have a Z3 and a Z3+ (Z4) and they are just not in the same ballpark as the S6 speedwise and are considerably bigger in size.
I've used a Z5 and lets face it, Even the SnapDragon 810 falls behind the S6 EDGE.
However , If I'd known that there are no tempered glass screen protectors for the S6 Edge, I wouldn't have bought it.
I was super excited to learn about the huawei P9 , Small phone..Fantastic Screen to body Ratio , Big Battery, SD Card Slot, 4 Gig of Ram, Freaking Amazing camera's...And then they go and ruin it with a 2.5D curved screen that no tempered glass screen protector will fit on properly..They all have to be made smaller than the screen.
http://www.gsmarena.com/huawei_p9-7972.php
Then Samsung announce the S7 , fixing up all the issues with the S6, Bigger battery, SD Card Slot , 4 Gig of ram, Fantastic screen to body ratio ..and what do they do..Go and ruin it by putting a 2.5D curved screen on it so once again you can't have a tempered glass screen protector that covers the whole screen..they are made smaller , you can feel the edges , they interfere with typing.
Sooooooo, The S7 is a no go.
The LG G5 is just a little to big for my hands ..yet i love tap on.
I can't believe this , but I'm actually considering a standard 128 Gig S6 with a flat screen just so i can actually protect it and enjoy using it, and maybe add a Mophie
Juice pack or something similar thats thin and doesn't add much side bulk to the phone...at least i know tempered glass works with the Mophie since they sell one with it.
http://www.mophie.com/shop/juice-pack-galaxy-s6
I consider curved glass on phones like 3D movies , they are coming out all over the place, yet I don't know a single person that likes 3D movies or goes to see them.
I haven't actually ever used or held a standard S6 (In fact the only reason i got the edge was for the bigger battery *sigh*) but i presume they are totally flat and can have a normal glass screen protector put on them.
I don't know if this is the correct forum for this, but i don't think XDA has a RANTING and VENTING forum lol.
Well i don't know what you're talking about, there are dozen of tempered glass for the S7 edge that fully covers the screen perfectly. Check on Zagg website or on ebay. Although they are expensive. The annoying part though is that they have to color the top/bottom bezel for I don't know what stupid reason...they should make it just transparent
I don't get it either... Why the hell you bought an EDGE in the first place? You could have chosen a normal S6 that was same as an Edge but with a flat display.
You say you don't want huge (5.5") displays but you bought an S7 Edge that HAS a 5.5" CURVED display. Why haven't you bought a regular S7 instead (that has a flat 5.1" display) ?
Ok, I got it. First time you bought the S6 Edge you might have made a mistake, new phone, first one with a curved display, bla, bla...but doing the same thing second time and complaining about it...
Oh and a last thing. Read a little about "nanofixit" (or similar) screen protectors. It's liquid, increases the display hardeness up to 9H and fits any display (cause it's liquid). Glass screen protectors start to become obsolete

Ummmm , Do i need to point it out or should i just tell him to reread.
Fine for the slow ones.
1) I did not buy an S7 edge, no where in there do I state that I did... In fact I said the S7 was out with the simple phrase "sooooooooooo the S7 is a no go"
2) The reason I didn't buy the S7 is because you're actually incorrect.. They don't have a flat screen.. They have what is known as a 2.5D screen... Basically this is a useless tapered end of the screen.. It serves no function other than to look good... But what it does is stop tempered glass protectors from covering the complete screen since they've not (contrary to mnm372) developed the process to adhere the curved glass protector to the screen.. The coloured tops and bottoms he mentioned are to hide the glue.. They can only glue them on in the 4 corners... So far there has not been one good or favourable review of a curved tempered glass screen protector for the s6 or s7 edge.. They just don't make full contact with the screen.. I've tried 3 so far, all from different manufacturers, all applied by people that do this for a living (I'm not good at it).. All were a failure.
3) What I said was, I was considering an S6 flat version just so I can have a small but powerful flagship phone with a tempered glass screen protector.
You're referring to such products as Crystalusion, I do in fact have a packet in front of me right now.. But i can assure you it's not the same as a tempered glass protector.
Sure, it's touted to protect your screen against normal use, scratches, abrasive marks.. Even bacteria.. However on my nexus 4, it didn't stop the screen from cracking when it was dropped.
A tempered glass protector did exactly what it was supposed to do when my Z3 was knocked off a table.. It broke the tempered glass and protected the screen underneath 100%...that's its job.
My pet hate or pet peeve, people that can't or don't read... Next time read and comprehend.
Consider this your written spanking for not reading before replying.

Quality feel (use of materials)

Rate this thread to express how you think the Huawei P30 Pro feels in terms of quality. A higher rating indicates that it feels premium and high-quality (attention to detail is high, manufacturing defects don't exist, etc).
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
What kind of gorilla glass it uses on the front and back ?
the oleophobic coating on p30 pro seems to be much batter than on Samsung phones, a LOT less smudges and fingerprints, but then it will depend on how long the coat will last, as it seems Samsung went with a solution that is less effective but lasts a long time, while other phones seem to "run out" after 2-3 months and the coating is worn off.
Overall quality feel is about the same for p30p and my s9+ and note9, I only had s10 in my hands for couple of minutes to compare the latest. Screen curvature is better on on p30p in regard of eye comfort, Samsung narrowed the edges in S9/N9/S10 too much and it getsin the way often, when reading or typing on larger sized gboard keyboard I don't really notice the screen is curved on p30p, but on the other hand samsung has much better handle on the random unwanted touches on the edges when you hold the phone. But that is software related..
I like buttons on Samsung phones better, they are smoother and easier to tuch, too firm on my huawei, and kinda clicky/loud, some people like that, I don't.
Display on huawei has light discoloration on the edges, noticeable only in bright/white colors, but it is still better than not being able to read first and last words on full screen text article when on Samsung.
What is kinda weird for me is that knocking on the display side by side note9 - p30p, the huawei sounds kinda hollow, like the cheap ipad 2017/2018 or old ipad models without laminated screens, yet when I compare the displays up close the display on huawei seems to be even "closer" to you than samsung, thinner glass probably. I think huawei is not using gorilla glass 6 as samsung does on s10, otherwise they would have advertise it as such. 3 of my friends have mate 20/pro, they all complain about horrible micro-scratches on display, but when I inspected it it was the same as on my note 9 - seems to be scrathes on the oleophobic coating only, as with a good clean the display does not show any scratches even on direct sunlight.
Generally, the recent p/mate phones feel as good as any other premium flagship phone. And their selection of back panel colors is the best at the moment, although I was only able to pick the black - breathing crystal was available for 256gb model but I don't need that much storage and wear cases/skins anyway, but if I had my hands on one of the gradient colors, I would probably just wear transparent case on it, it really looks great.
Feels solid and what you'd expect from a premium flagship.
But my God is this device slippery. It was hard to hold as I was scared of it slipping from my hands. And one time the phone just slipped right out of my pocket onto a hard floor. Took it like a champion and didn't have a mark on it.
I'd advise getting a case simply because it's easier to hold

Don't use a wet wipe to clean your phone and the coating will last you much longer. I used the P20 Pro for almost 7 months, and the coating didn't wore off one bit. Keep anything that has alcohol in it as far as you can from your phone.

I dont think they use gorillaa glass
Screen is super sensitive. Not a single drop not a single mishap and i got a scratch on the screen the size of a fingernail. Quite disappointed on that since i was expecting my screen protector toarrive from day to day to avoid that and the phone is 2 weeks old. Ill probably use the vip service if its covered to change screen
I plan to use jet seal on top of the coating. That prevents scratches and further fingerprinting. I want to keep that breathing crystal beautiful for ages
