Standby drain - Moto X4 Real Life Review

When you sleep, does your phone sleep, or does it stay up all night and crunch 1s and 0s? Rate this thread to express how you deem the speed at which the Moto X4's battery drains under standby conditions. A higher rating indicates that when the phone is not in use, the battery drains minimally.

Loses less than 5% overnight.

I've been experiencing some major drain since updating to Oreo. My battery graph is just a straight diagonal line no matter when I'm doing. I don't have any facebook apps installed and i've done two factory resets, once setting the phone up as an entirely new device. any ideas what else i can do here?

Around 2 percent drain without use Honor asus and samsung had 2 percent in 4 hours moto drain is much coz of Moto display

reduce background data of social media apps and least used apps. my night drain is about 3%.

Battery life is terrible on this phone.

i've disabled background data and background activity for every app possible. still losing 10% or more overnight.

Moto display is culprit even with slight movement of your bed it wakes up and around 20 times in tight and your phone doens't go to doze mode

I have Moto display disabled.

That's why I keep it display down on bed while I sleep. Doesn't bother waking up the screen (Moto display)

Yes, after using the Xiaomi Redmi 5A i am impressed by it running 3 days and 4 days on idle but this X4 barely manages 24 hours
Wondering what to do next with this phone, sell or keep it.

I honestly think it's bad software optimization.

In the initial days after oreo update, battery used drain much overnight (8-10%). But don't know how, nowadays drain is only 3-4%.
I have disabled moto display and moto actions except quick screenshot.

hasn't made a difference for me, but i appreciate the post!

In nougat i could see when my phone would sleep,
and when it would not.
I have been on oreo since it came out, and haven't really had any battery drain.
But i can't find anywhere a graphic which shows during which time of the day the phone goes into doze mode,
and when it does not.
Any tips?
But I notice it doesn't show anymore

Moto X 4.4.4 TERRIBLE battery life!

I have a problem. I upgraded my moto X to 4.4.4 about 4 months ago, and since then my battery has only lasted 5 HOURS a day. I deleted a bunch of apps and only have a few and yet it still only lasts that long. In my battery life in settings, it says screen is using 50%, and its on a pretty low brightness, chrome and other things are only at 2-5%.
I REALLY need help with my battery, so if anybody could help that would be awesome.
Sent from my XT1049 using Tapatalk
On moderate usage it only lasts 3-4 hours!!! That's literally how short my battery is
Sent from my XT1049 using Tapatalk
Bump
Sent from my XT1049 using Tapatalk
I also have poor battery. I lose 50% or so overnight. And during the day I get around 3+ hours SOT generally.
I've seen battery fluctuations after some app updates. like.. battery was great (day and a half per charge), got some app updates from Google and battery life was bad (half a day then had to charge!), got more updates, battery life was back to "normal", and last week or so I got some more updates and battery was back to bad.
Also, my phone is now going on 2yrs old. So the battery has likely degraded and probably doesn't hold as good of a charge because of that too.
check for app usages like google play services or wake time. if constant wake time, could be an app that is keeping the phone from going into deep sleep mode (often related to google play services update).
otherwise, I'm on LP, and I wish I could get 3 hours SOT...
Try downloading a battery monitor and run it for a couple days. I recommend GSam Battery Monitor. Also go into Android Settings > Battery and tap on the graph and see if your phone is going into sleep mode when the screen is off. If it isn't then there is something keeping your phone awake when it should be in deep sleep. The GSam Battery Monitor app will help you find out what that is. Even if your phone isn't going into sleep GSam will at least tell you what is draining the crap out of it. If nothing is glaring out to you, then perhaps your battery is degraded and won't hold a charge as well as it used to,
Android os seems to be using more power than the screen. I have my screen set to the dimmest setting. Anybody have an idea of what android os might be doing?

look deeper into the google accounts. there are several things trying to sync such as google+, google photos, fit, e-mail, data, people, contacts, etc...
Disabling a bit of syncing helped, but my moto X still lasts only 5 hours.

look at your CPU states - is going into deep sleep mode? if not, then something (app) is preventing it from going into that mode. also check your awakw status - if the phone is constantly awake, then there is an app that is keeping it awake.
try to change your governor from interactive to ondemand by using kernel auditor
Anyone having a high Android OS (high Keep Awake) battery drain?
If so turn off battery optimization in advanced Wifi settings.
Also root+greenfy+amplify pro+power nap = 24 hours battery with 3-4 hours of screen time.
Factory reset, don't install any apps, don't even sign in to your google account, just use it for 1-2 days like that and see what battery you get, no data either ofc.Stick to Wifi and 2G for calls. If then you get again 5hrs battery life, you got a problem with battery or something else, if way longer, lets say 12+hrs , then some app/setting was causing it and it's your thing to find out what it was.

6 hours SOT from under 100% to 20% on first full charge WOW!
Thankfully battery on Oreo seems on par
Can't complain about that. Twice what my HTC 10 would usually manage. :good:
It just keeps getting better and better. Release Oreo already
thanks all for posting the results .. i might get one
Basing off accubattery app in playstore, sot is at 6hr 55m. For a 3090 mha batt, its remarkable already.
I get around 8 hours on 7.1.1, nearly as good as my Moto G5 Plus (which has a slightly smaller battery)
LTE on Location on sync on
Very good performance

Got 7:22 at 20%, this was all on wifi at home but with LTE on. Lots of installing/configuring apps, a bit of GPS/ingress, lots of twitter/web browsing/etc.
I'm getting about 4- 4 1/2 hours on LTE.
WIFI on, but not connected,
Bluetooth connected to hands free.
About 30-45 minutes of calls.
Skype, whatsapp, hangouts running in background.
Playing some games.
Loads of driving, so signal changes all the time.
Edit:it looks like SoT is getting better after few more day.
Now I'm getting over 6 hours in exactly the same conditions.
These are my best numbers. I noticed that phone calls and camera are the most draining apps. Usually I don't play games, sometimes async multiplayer games like Scrabble or similar.
Wifi ON if a network is avaliable
Bluetooth always ON (FitBit)
LTE enabled
Brightness automatically over 25%

Not impressed
Standby is terrible to be honest. Drains almost 1 - 1.5% per hour just lying on table. Pixel 2 used to drain 0.5 to 0.75% in an hour
I get usually 0.6% / hour overnight drain. I'll wake up with about 95%. Phone face down with AOD so it goes off. Once in a while an app will keep the phone awake unbeknownst to me until the morning. Either I restart or force close the app and it goes away. If you're getting higher drain than that you should check your apps keeping the phone awake with screen off. BBS is really good for that.

You need to figure out what is keeping the phone awake then. I tweaked my wife's 3 yesterday and she go 0.4% / hr last night and I only got 0.6% / hr. I have a little more running on mine though, sync wise. AOD / w/face down to turn it off.

Wow. That's even worse than I expected. That's must be some misbehaving app. With a 2915mAh battery I think about 0.6% per hour with AOD off. With AOD on I'd expect like 1.25% per hour.

Turing off "Adaptive Battery" seems to give vastly more juices here, hopefully it gets fixed in the coming update cuz it's supposed to help not making it worse. lol
Shouldn't it take some time for adaptive battery to actually work? It needs to learn after a week or 2 I assume.

I guess you're right. But I switched it off yesterday, and I must admit the Pixel 3 sips much less juice when idle since. How come the learning process takes that much power?
Has anybody used the phone for at least two weeks with adaptive battery on and noticed any improvement?

If it takes that long then it doesn't work. I had it on since day one, whenever that was, and turned it off a couple of days ago. Adaptive battery should be labeled accelerated battery drain at this point. It was a nice thought but it simply doesn't work. Now if they acknowledge the mess up and say they fixed it well then I'd try it again. Until then..
Okay guys, let's try to see if leaving Adaptive Battery on for 2 weeks would give us some what better SOT or standby. I've started yesterday.
However, as to share, my first week I kept switching between on/off and it is LEGIT that leaving it on is such a culprit! funny enough!

Also kind of funny that a feature like Adaptive Battery that is supposed to help battery life actually makes it worse.
Interesting. Got my pixel 3 today, coming from IPhone X
Standby time is not the best part of the pixel...
As I said earlier on another subject. When charging the Pixel 3 100% its takes 1% in less than 5 min compared to Pixel 2 and Nexus 6P its take over 30 min. So i think OS Pie is not good for battery

Hmm it's not that simple ... Some updates as the one for my previews phone that did that 1% of draining passes through newer phones... As you've noticed my phone was Nexus 6p from 2015 realeased date and the other guy mentioned the same thing for the pixel 2xl whose realeased date was two years later. So having been said that thing, it means older phones of OnePlus have the same behavior or probably worse than the 7 but any has as good as Google phones for example. I hope they will fix it as you've said though
Getting 2% drain overnight, rather consistently. WiFi on, BT/4G off. On newest OS version 9.5.5
Mine drained 3% after 8 hours of standby 4G volte is on WiFi on and everything else is switched off.. coming from s8 plus i consider this as a great standby [emoji28], usually my s8 plus will drain around 5 to 7% after 8 hrs of standby

Never tested how much standby drain I get at night but compared to the Mi9 it's much better!
Don't know what's happening, but I'm losing more than 30-35% from 3-4 days. Phone's not rooted, so I'm having tough time to find culprit.
Same setting on OP7, overnight drop 8% at latest, even already enabling battery saver mode, only installing 14 apps, a little bit disappointing.
4% within 7h44m = 0.5%/h:good: overnight with dual sim mobile network enabled, wifi off.
I had like 3% drop on 4.30hrs overnight. Usually sleep at 1.00AM and wake up at 5.30AM, went on 79%, woke up on 76%. Dual sim on, Wifi On. mobile data bluetooth and all other connectivity settings are turned off.
I still get 7% of drain overnight. It doesn't get any better.
Today I left the wifi on and drained 13%.

Likely a device specific problem. Notebookcheck test power consumption in idle, sd 730/g phones are within the same range of comparable mid range SOCs. A71 in particular consumes pretty much the same as Pixel 3a for example (Snapdragon 670), more under load but it's quite a bit more powerful as well, consumes less than Galaxy A51 (Exynos 9611), way less than Huawei P30 lite (Kirin 710) and quite a bit less than Oneplus 7 pro as well for that matter. It uses the same modem as sd 710 and 712 so that's not a problem either.
I have 2-4% standby battery drain. But I checked all apps for background battery usage, I don't use facebook app. The only background apps I use are email, sense flip clock and I use greenify on top of that.

Hey, am thinking of buying an A71 and was wondering if you still have battery issues please?
I have wifi off and Bluetooth for watch, No FB . I get 1 or 2% loss mainly messenger lite , and my games I don't shut down .. with wifi on an average day its about 40% loss . that with wifi always on , games being played, youtube etc ... Since taking of FB I have noticed a huge difference, as before I was loosing 10/20 % at night and 70% in the day ... now I charge once every 2 days, which is not bad ...

Same problem. Just got mine and lost 25% overnight. AOD is not even on. I disabled Facebook the instant I took it out of the box so it isn't that. Must be another app but not sure which. All the same apps I was using on my previous device and had no issues like this.

Standby Drain on A71 Samsung
I have the phone for 1 week now and the battery I can say is performing very poor. Just got it to 100% then after 1 minute suddenly went to 99% and after 5 mins suddenly went to 98% just on standby mode. Can anyone please explain me why this is happening?
My device is always optimized (no background processes running). Every app (even the useful ones) I have put to sleep, which means I'm sacrificing on not getting the notifications when the internet is connected as those those apps are put to sleep but I did it just to put my battery on right track. Still no significant benefit.
Standby drain is the biggest issue I'm facing. Early 2% drops from 100% for no reason at all. At night time, I see at least 3% drop in 4 to 5 hours standby with wifi off and zero brightness and dark mode on and always-on display disabled, battery saving mode on and no app running in the background.
I'm having 1% battery drop every 10 mins for just reading comments on XDA developer or GSMArena with brightness to 0%, no extra app working in background, have put all the apps to sleep when not in use, no multimedia use, always-on display disabled, dark mode on, battery saving mode on. So, when I'm using Chrome, I'm only using Chrome. When I'm watching Youtube videos on app with 20% brightness and 60% volume, I'm having 1% drop every 7 to 8 mins. I see variability between each % drop. Like for example, sometimes it drops 1% at 4 mins interval and after that it will take 8 mins to drop a percent.
I have never been so confused in terms of battery life before. Someone from Samsung should at least come forward and explain to us what is going on.
From the reviews, the new updates doesn't have much to offer in terms of battery life. I haven't gotten the update yet.

Had the same issue and no matter what I did couldn’t fix it. I turned this off turned that off, lowered this, reduced that. In the end I gave up and returned it. Shouldn’t be that much of an effort but then it always seems to be with Samsung. Huawei for example it’s just ready to go and works flawlessly out of the box. For a phone that had 4500mah battery it performs nothing like it. I bought the new iPhone SE, it’s battery is tiny 1800mah or something and it lasts longer than the A71.
47% overnight, with no use. It's my second A71. The first, the battery seemed normal. But I did not observe this detail carefully. I changed it the first time due to the infamous discoloration defect of the screen on a gray background with low brightness. Now the second, in addition to the same discoloration defect of the screen, the battery does not last! I went to sleep, the battery at 47%. Wifi off. Mobile data off. GPS off. Bluetooth turned off. Vibration off. Always on Display off. NFC Off. Sim card removed. Only Whatsapp running in the background. All other apps have been configured to be suspended in the background. Approximately 8 hours later, without any use, the battery has zeroed. I have a Samsung Galaxy A7 2017, which has 3 years of use and a 3600MAh battery worn by hundreds of charge cycles, and yet its battery is WELL better than the Galaxy A71, which has 4500MAh and a few days of use. If a new cell phone discharges at this rate, imagine after about 2 years of use. You will need to recharge every hour. Turning the adaptive battery on or off for me made no difference. During normal use, it discharges quickly, but the problem is much more evident at night, when the device is not in use. It seems to drain as much energy in idle mode as in normal use.
The quality of Samsung's products is dropping every day. 3 years ago, you could buy an intermediary made of metal and glass. Protection IP68, OIS and Gorilla Glass 4. Today, the devices that cost almost the same as the high end, are all made of plastic. Without IP68. Gorilla Glass 3 (obsolete technology from 2013), without OIS, and batteries that although bigger, last less. Quality decreases and price increases. It is unfortunate.

The 730G is dreadful on my Xiaomi Mi Note 10 - which has an even bigger, ~5200mAh battery. It performs much worse than my OnePlus 7 Pro with 4000mAh. IMO the chipset (730/730G) is NOT power efficient.

I have the 730G 8GB ram variant on my A71 (This is the standard in the PH) and my phone lasts for 2 days with social media and youtube usage. OST is between 6-7 hours so no issues with the chip itself, the phone software is probably not optimized properly with the Mi Note 10.

So what's happening to the other people in this thread? Is it a case of just too many bad apples (bad/broken devices) or... ?

I think we need to put things into context first. None of them talked about what apps they had running, what settings they used, etc. Also, the other dude talked about the Huawei when that phone is known to aggressively kill apps very quickly in the background to save battery as a default. You can also do that with Sammy's but you need to activate it first.
As for my phone, it's set on its default out of the box-setting which is optimized if that at all matters.

I think we also need to look at which carriers are having issues. I have an open line international variant and I've had none of the issues in this thread.

Hey, am thinking of buying an A71 and was wondering if you still have battery issues please?

If you can find an open line (not tied to any carrier) international variant, it doesn't have any issues.

Phone lost 24% overnight. Culprit seems to be Facebook services, which in turn triggered Google services (for GPS location). I've disabled all the FB crap now and I'll see how it goes today...
Update 19/02 - I'm using Swipe Pro for Facebook and since then the battery seems to have settled. Getting really good battery life now with not too much standby drain.

Mine was a bit power hungry at first 6 months ago
Now that i shut off and tried to kill all processes but active ones my battery is AMAZING!
So to compare I read your post last night at around 11 ish to midnight topped off the phone to 94%, and it dropped to 93% just before i went to sleep
killed all the processes with built in battery device care and also greenify.
woke up today at 8:30am and the batter was at 90% and dropped to 89% after a min of use.
So 3-4% over eight or nine hours.... I"m pretty happy with that.
